RESUMEN

Objective: This research examines the effects of educational materials, delivered with "take-home and cook-with-friends" meal kits, on college students' food agency. Participants: In the spring of 2021, 186 students were recruited at a US public university and randomly allocated into either an intervention group that received meal kits and educational materials or a control group that received only meal kits. Methods: Meal kits containing local ingredients were distributed weekly to the participants and surveys were conducted to measure participants' food agency, using the Cooking and Food Provisioning Action Scale (CAFPAS). Hypothesis tests and regression analysis were then conducted to examine the educational intervention's effects on the CAFPAS scores. Results: The educational intervention had a positive and statistically significant effect on students' CAFPAS scores. Conclusions: Educational interventions hold promise in enhancing college students' food agency, at least in the short term.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: African American adults experience a disproportionate burden and increased mortality for most solid tumor cancers and their adolescent children are negatively impacted by the illness experience. The purpose of this randomized clinical trial is to evaluate the efficacy of a culturally sensitive family-based intervention program developed for African American families coping with solid tumor parental cancer using an intention-to-treat approach. Primary outcome is adolescent depressive symptoms at end of treatment. METHODS: A sample of 172 African American families will be enrolled from two diverse oncology centers (Helen Graham Cancer Center in Newark, DE, and Kimmel Cancer Center in Philadelphia, PA). Eligible families will be randomized either to a 5-session intervention Families Fighting Cancer Together (FFCT) or a 5-session parent-only psycho-educational (PED) program. Assessments will occur at weeks 0 (baseline), 8 (end-of-treatment), 24, and 52. DISCUSSION: Treatments to help African American adolescents cope with the impact of parental cancer are scarce and urgently needed. If successful, this proposed research will change the nature of intervention support options available to African Americans, who are overrepresented and underserved by existing services or programs. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This project is registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (Protocol #: NCT03567330).

Alzheimer's is a neurodegenerative disease that affects the cognition and memory, besides the carrier's motor skills. In order to meet the needs and provide a better life quality to the patients, a specific care it's demanded from their caregivers. The aim of this paper was to collect and raise academic productions concerning Alzheimer's disease as well as its symptoms, and group interventions from 2011 to 2016. Regarding the methods, an integrative survey rose our data, that was provided from the following scientific newspapers: PUBmed; BVsalud; Scielo; and CAPES. Once in these newspapers, the words 'Alzheimer', 'sintomas', and 'grupos' were searched, providing us, the produced papers in the specified date. A qualitative and quantitative analysis was performed, which made the integration, of the primary productions to the new data indexation, possible. Concerning the results, it was possible to evidence a total of thirty-five productions, among them, seven in English and three in Spanish. All of the collected data relates to Alzheimer's disease, its symptoms, and models of intervention groups (that aims to increase patients' and its caregivers' life quality).

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects of a lifestyle intervention on the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among participants with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), in particular in the subgroup with baseline glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels ≥5.7%, in primary healthcare settings. DESIGN: Randomized controlled trial. SETTING: 32 healthcare centers in Japan. PARTICIPANTS: Participants with IGT, aged 30-60 years, were randomly assigned to either an intensive lifestyle intervention group (ILG) or a usual care group (UCG). INTERVENTIONS: During the initial 6 months, participants in the ILG received four group sessions on healthy lifestyles by public health providers. An individual session was further conducted biannually during the 3 years. Participants in the UCG received usual care such as one group session on healthy lifestyles. OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary endpoint was the development of T2DM based on an oral glucose tolerance test. RESULTS: The mean follow-up period was 2.3 years. The annual incidence of T2DM were 2.7 and 5.1/100 person-years of follow-up in the ILG (n=145) and UCG (n=149), respectively. The cumulative incidence of T2DM was significantly lower in the ILG than in the UCG among participants with HbA1c levels ≥5.7% (log-rank=3.52, p=0.06; Breslow=4.05, p=0.04; Tarone-Ware=3.79, p=0.05), while this was not found among participants with HbA1c levels <5.7%. CONCLUSIONS: Intensive lifestyle intervention in primary healthcare setting is effective in preventing the development of T2DM in IGT participants with HbA1c levels ≥5.7%, relative to those with HbA1c levels <5.7%.
