RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: In Chile demand for specialist care following exposure to interpersonal violence (IPV) in youth far exceeds capacity. Group interventions may improve access to care for youth. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness and acceptability of two low-intensity group interventions: Trama Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT); Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT); and treatment as usual, Art therapy-based support (ATBS). Outcomes measured were post-traumatic stress symptoms, depression, interpersonal functioning and affect regulation. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants were 67 Chilean youth aged 13-17 years, victims of IPV on a waiting list to receive specialist individual intervention. METHODS: Using a randomised controlled trial design, participants were randomly assigned to one of the interventions. Self-report measures were completed at 5 timepoints between baseline and follow up eight weeks after intervention ended. Dropout rates and attendance were also analysed. RESULTS: TF-CBT showed significant decreases for PTSD (d = 0.91) and depression (d = 0.77) symptoms, sustained at follow-up with affect regulation problems also showing significant decrease from baseline (d = 0.43). IPT showed significant decreases in PTSD symptoms (d = 0.64) and affect regulation problems (d = 0.66), both sustained at follow-up. ATBS showed statistically significant decrease for PTSD (d = 0.79) and interpersonal problems (d = 0.65) but only change in PTSD was sustained at follow-up. There were no significant differences in dropout or attendance between the interventions. CONCLUSION: Group interventions provide a viable and effective first-phase option for reducing psychological distress in IPV-exposed youth in high-demand contexts. Effectiveness may be further improved through the more active involvement of parents and carers.

Inductive links represent a highly promising avenue for both powering and communicating medical implants. Yet they encounter challenges such as constrained communication distance and limited data rate. In Load Shift Keying (LSK), a switch in the secondary side of the inductive link can be placed in parallel with the load (Short-Circuit Technique - SCT), in series with the load (Open-Circuit Technique - OCT), or both (Dual Technique - DLT), to vary the impedance of the secondary. Hence, the impedance reflected to the primary side changes and is used to transmit information externally from the implant. Among these, DLT is a novel LSK technique proposed in this work, which becomes independent from the load on the implant side. This study compares these three methods, confronting measurements to simulations. The evaluation focused on variations in coil distance and load. The proposal is illustrated in the case of an implantable gastric stimulator, with specific constraints in secondary coil size and power requirements. The newly developed DLT consistently outshone SCT and OCT in extending the operational range of communication, registering a maximum modulation index of 0.797 and a bit error rate below 10- 7 at an operating distance of 95 mm through the air. Its load-independent characteristic allowed DLT to surpass the performance of SCT and OCT, which were each advantageous under high and low loads, respectively. All these results are confirmed by a LTSpice simulation. Consequently, the communication techniques put forward in this work mark a significant progression in medical implant communications, enhancing coil-to-coil operational distance while adhering to a low carrier frequency.
RESUMEN
Background: Intervertebral disc extrusion is an important cause of spinal cord dysfunction in dogs. Intradural localizationof the extruded disc material is rare, and is generally associated with a traumatic event or with recurrence of disc extrusionat a previously affected site. We report the clinical presentation, diagnostic workup, and treatment of a dog with intraduralintervertebral disc extrusion not preceded by a traumatic event.Case: A 6-year-old male Dachshund was referred for neurological evaluation due to acute onset of hind-end paralysispreceded by claudication of the left hindlimb. The patient had been receiving conservative treatment to no effect. Neurological examination revealed asymmetric non-ambulatory paraparesis, absence of postural reactions and decreased muscletone in both hindlimbs, a bilaterally diminished patellar reflex, and a hindlimb withdrawal reflex which was normal onthe right and greatly diminished to absent on the left. The lower back was tender to epaxial palpation. Plain radiographsof the lumbar spine in the lateral projection showed calcified material within the spinal canal between the third and fourthlumbar vertebrae. Myelography was suggestively abnormal at the same level, with epidural leakage of contrast at L3-L4.Considering the clinical history, breed, age, neurological signs, and radiographic findings, intervertebral disc disease wassuspected despite the inconclusive myelography findings. A dorsolateral lumbar hemilaminectomy was performed. Intraoperatively, the diagnosis was confirmed by visualization of a discolored spinal cord and absence of extradural material. The intradural space was accessed via durotomy. A firm, straw-yellow material was seen compressing the spinal cord andremoved. Subsequent histopathological...(AU)

Objective: We tested an aptitude by treatment interaction; namely, whether patients' baseline interpersonal problems moderated the comparative efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) vs. interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for bulimia nervosa (BN). Method: Data derived from a randomized-controlled trial. Patients reported on their interpersonal problems at baseline; purge frequency at baseline, midtreatment, and posttreatment; and global eating disorder severity at baseline and posttreatment. We estimated the rate of change in purge frequency across therapy, and the likelihood of attaining clinically meaningful improvement (recovery) in global eating disorder severity by posttreatment. We then tested the interpersonal problem by treatment interactions as predictors of both outcomes. Results: Patients with more baseline overly communal/friendly problems showed steeper reduction in likelihood of purging when treated with CBT vs. IPT. Patients with more problems of being under communal/cold had similar reductions in likelihood of purging across both treatments. Patients with more baseline problems of being overly agentic were more likely to recover when treated with IPT vs. CBT, whereas patients with more problems of being under agentic were more likely to recover when treated with CBT vs. IPT. Conclusions: Interpersonal problems related to communion and agency may inform treatment fit among two empirically supported therapies for BN.

Background:Emphysematous cystitis is a rare inflammatory disease of the lower urinary tract characterized by the ac-cumulation of gas within the wall and lumen of the urinary bladder. The clinical manifestations of emphysematous cystitis resemble those of bacterial cystitis, often hindering the differentiation between the two. In this work, we report a case of emphysematous cystitis in a diabetic dog. The diagnosis of cystitis was followed by ultrasonography for the early detec-tion of emphysematous cystitis, which showed the presence of multifocal and irregular hyperechoic interfaces forming a distal reverberation artifact.Case: A 9-year-old female dog was referred to VETCLINIC Veterinary Hospital 24 h with a history of urinary incontinence, polydipsia, polyuria, and diabetes mellitus. At first, the blood glucose was measured and found to be 376 mg/dL. Blood count, biochemical measurements of alkaline phosphatase (AF), urea, creatinine, and alanine aminotransferase (AAT), urinalysis, urine culture with antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and abdominal ultrasonography were performed. The hematological exams showed that the serum was lipemic and with hemolysis; the values of AAT, AF, and total plasma proteins were above the reference values; hematocrit was below the normal level; erythrocyte rouleaux and thrombocyto-sis with platelet aggregates were present. Urinalysis showed the presence of traces of proteins, glucose, and occult blood as well as granular and hyaline cylinders and transitional epithelial cells. In urine culture, growth of the aerobic bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae was observed, being sensitive to most of the antimicrobials. Ultrasonography showed the pres-ence of gas in the wall of the urinary bladder, besides a discrete thickening of the wall, compatible with the diagnosis of emphysematous cystitis. Discussion: The first report of emphysematous cystitis in dogs was made in 1926 in a diabetic dog...

Background: Hypertrophic osteopathy (OH) is a syndrome characterized by progressive bilateral periosteal bone neofor-mation that mainly affects the thoracic and pelvic limb bones metaphyses and diaphyses. In most cases, it is secondary to a chronic primary lesion located in the thoracic cavity but can be associated with an abdominal injury that has already been occurred. The occurrence of this condition without being associated with a primary lesion is considered infrequent in animals. The purpose of this report was to describe a case of idiopathic hypertrophic osteopathy in a cat with a description of clinical signs and radiographic and anatomopathological findings.Case: A male adult cat was brought to the veterinarian with an initial observation by the owner of four limbs volume in-crease, apathy, and reluctance to move. Upon clinical examination, the animal presented dehydration, mucosal hyperemia, hyperthermia, and bilateral edema of the thoracic and pelvic limbs. Based on the radiographic examination, a periosteal reaction with palisade-like appearance was found in the metacarpals, radios, ulna, humerus, scapulae, tibias, and fibulae. There were no significant changes in additional exams. Due to poor prognosis, the cat was euthanized and referred for necropsy and histopathological examination. All organs were examined both macroscopically and microscopically. Frag-ments were fixed in 10% formalin and routinely processed for histological slides with hematoxylineosin and Massons trichrome, and limb bones that were not fixed in formalin were macerated. Lesions were observed only in the thoracic and pelvic limbs. Macroscopically, there was a diffuse, regular, slightly firm volume increase, covered by abundant gelati-nous whitish tissue. The periosteal bone neoformations were characterized by numerous papillary projections distributed throughout the phalanges, radius, ulna, humerus, scapulae, tibia and fibulae. Histologically...

Background:The feline atopic syndrome (FAS) associated to environmental allergens is the third most common allergic dermatosis in domestic cats. In general, clinical signs are not pathognomonic and the exclusion of other pruritus causes is necessary to reach the diagnosis of FAS. The treatment is based on the use of drugs to control the pruritus, such as glucocorticoids, cyclosporine and, recently, oclacitinib, a Janus kinase inhibitor. This study aimed to report the efficacy of oclacitinib on the treatment of FAS associated to environmental allergens. Case:A 10-year-old female feline, crossbred, presented a history of pruritic dermatitis during ten months and diarrhea. The animal had been submitted to treatment for ectoparasites with pour-on selamectin and was fed with a commercial hypoallergenic diet in the last eight weeks or so. However, no improvement on the skin condition was observed. Physical examination revealed disseminated furfuraceous desquamation, excoriation and erythema on the right supraorbital region. Bilateral conjunctivitis was also observed. Complete blood cell count, biochemistry profile, urinalysis, immunochroma-thographic test for feline immunodeffiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FeLV), fungic culture and abdominal ultrasonography were requested. The abnormalities observed were reduced urinary density and discrete loss of renal corticomedullary differentiation. Thus, based on physical examination and complementary exams, the animal was diag-nosis with FAS, since the main other causes of pruritus (hypersensitivity to ectoparasites and alimentary allergens) were excluded. The animal was also diagnosed with stage 1 chronic kidney disease. Therapy based on oclacitinib was instituted with an induction dose of 1 mg/kg twice daily for 14 days, followed by a maintenance dose of 1 mg/kg once daily. After 30 days of treatment, a satisfactory therapeutic response was observed, with complete remission of pruritus. The...

Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is a disease associated to the decrease of platelet count in peripheral blood, with repercussion on the oral cavity, due to the potential risk of spontaneous bleeding or provoking it. The aim of this work was evaluate the relation between the platelet count of chronic IPT patients and their periodontal condition. Thereunto, 31 patients were evaluated; 15 with this pathology (group 1) and 16 Dentistry students with no hematologic disease (group 2). Both groups were examined in their periodontal condition through gingival condition index (G), periodontal attachment loss (P) and gingival recession (R), as well as blood tests were performed to verify the platelet count, further a questionnaire on the socioeconomic aspects, access to dentistry services and mouth health self-perception. It was observed that 68.8% of IPT patients' mouth sextants presented some degree of gingivitis, despite some 16.8% manifested loss of periodontal insertion. Gingival retraction occurred in only 2 patients of the group 1, and the average measure for this event in this group was 0.22mm. The questionnaires applied allowed characterizing the sample of the group 1 as low income and low education in relation to the group 2, but with need of dental treatment. We concluded, therefore, there was no direct relation between the platelet count of IPT individuals when the intraoral test was performed, and their periodontal conditions received the indexes "G", "P" e "R".
RESUMEN
The objective of this study was to determine the stocking density of matrinxã (Brycon orthotaenia) in cages, considering the productive performance. Juvenile Brycon orthotaenia (n = 5280) were distributed in 16 cages of 4m³ at densities of 45, 70, 95 and 120 fish m-3. The fish were fed with commercial feed with 40% crude protein during all experimental period. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and linear regression to estimate the best fit using 5% probability. The production parameters such as survival, initial weight, final weight, feed conversion and specific growth rate were not influenced by stocking density, as well as the parameters of water quality. However, final biomass, biomass gain and feed intake showed a positive linear relationship with stocking density. Evaluating these results, it was concluded that the stocking density of matrinxã (Brycon orthotaenia) up to 120 fish m-3 represent the best productive performance.

The present study examined health and productive aspects of swine Finishing Units (FU) in Mato Grosso State, Brazil. Data were collected by the official Institute of Agricultural Protection of Mato Grosso State, considering 55 finishing farms, distributed in 18 municipalities in the period from December 2005 to January 2006. The data were described and analyzed by the Spearman correlation test, according to the number of animals per FU, productive aspects, health protection systems, control of potential pathogen carriers and animal handling. The swine population totaled 74,650 registered animals and 44 TU (80.0%) were in the cerrado region. In regard to the number of pigs, 10.9%, 9.1%, 14%, 18.2%, 21.8% and 25% had 110, 11100, 101500, 5011,000, 1,0012,000 and up to 2,000 pigs respectively. Integrated farms totaled 63.6%, while 89.1% utilized intensive management. The analysis of positive correlations (P < 0.05) were observed in various types of farms, with relation to: veterinary care, all-in all-out systems, carcass incineration, fire sweeping, composting, masonry and wood buildings, consumption of self-produced and commercial food, water supply by dam, river or streams, and fly control. With different correlation levels, numerous deficits were detected in the health management in various segments of the FUs, so biosecurity issues of farms in Mato Grosso State should be revised, in order to assess their degree of vulnerability.

This study aimed to determine the values of apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and nitrogen corrected apparent metabolizable energy (AMEn) of four sorghum hybrids and compare these values of corn and sorghum in chickens of different ages. In the first stage (14 to 22 days) was used 75 birds CobbAvian48 males who had fife treatments:feed contro (RT) + ground corn, RT + SorghumA, RT + SorghumB, RT + SorghumC, RT + Sorghum D (where A, B, C and D samples of sorghum hybrids). the second stage (33 to 41 days), we used 30 male birds that consisted of two treatments (RT+ ground corn, RT+ SorgoA) with five repetitions. We performed a total collection of excreta and from the results were calculated, using equations, the AME and AMEn. The variables were subjected to analysis of variance and compared using the Tukey test (P <0.05). At 14 days was observed for corn AME (3442 Kcal / Kg) and AME (3253 Kcal / Kg), while for sorghum A (EMA 3344 Kcal / Kg and AMEn 3170 Kcal / Kg), sorghum B (EMA 3518 Kcal / kg AMEn and 3440 Kcal / Kg), sorghum C (EMA 3410 Kcal / Kg, AMEn 3159 Kcal / Kg) and sorghum D (EMA 3275 Kcal / Kg and AMEn 3231 Kcal / Kg). At 33 days of age for maize was found significantly higher value for EMA 4153 Kcal / kg and 4255 kcal AMEn / kg, the same as the value of EMA 3934 Kcal / kg and 3980 kcal AMEn / kg for sorghum A. There was an effect of age on the AME and AMEn determined for corn and sorghum, being higher when determined for older birds.(AU)

Visceral leishmaniasis in dogs is described as a chronic disease whose main symptoms are progressive weigth loss, cachexy and dermatologic lesions. Recently, the disease has been associated to neurologic disorders. A total of 40 dogs with visceral leishmaniasis were divided into two groups. The first composed of dogs without neurological signs (n=30) and the second by dogs with neurological disorders (n=10). Brain samples were collected, stored in 10% buffered formalin and subjected to immunohistochemical examination for amastigotes forms of Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi, CD3+, CD4+ and CD8+ T lymphocytes and macrophages. Imunnohistochemistry evaluation revealed no amastigote forms of the parasite. CD3+ T lymphocytes were present in 24/30 (80%) dogs without neurological signs and in all dogs from the second group (p=0.0011). CD4+ and CD8+ were rarely observed, with CD4+ immunostaining in 10/40 (25%) dogs, from which half of them had neurological disease (p=0.0090). The presence of CD8+ was detected only in 4/10 (40%) dogs from neurological group (p=0.0021). Macrophages were detected in 38/40 (95%) dogs, without significant differences between groups (p=0.7664).(AU)
