RESUMEN

As the first ladder of China, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau has always been known as the "roof of the world". Its environmental carrying capacity can be estimated more accurately than other regions because of its harsh natural environment, low population density, limited industrial and agricultural development, and low human activities. However, the current ecological risks of Co and threshold research are limited, and there is a lack of awareness of W's environmental risks. Hence, this study assessed the ecological support potential of the Bardawu region within Dulan County, Qinghai Province, using 7373 soil specimens, determined regional soil baseline measures, and applied the substance equilibrium linear technique along with the ecological aggregate indicator technique to examine the heavy metal content of the soil. A comprehensive evaluation of the environmental capacity and health risks was conducted to provide a reference for pastoral planning. The findings indicated that the cumulative static ecological capacity of the six trace heavy elements in the soil was ranked as follows: Cr > Li > Ni > Cu > W > Co, with W and Co positioned as the final pair. The remaining areas with a high environmental capacity were predominantly found in the study zone. The central sector exhibited diminished environmental capacity in the southwest and northeast and presented a contamination hazard. Land use, soil type, and geological type considerably affected the six elements in the study area at the p < 0.05. The Bardawu region's mean comprehensive index of soil environmental capacity was 0.98, indicating an intermediate level of environmental capacity and a moderate health risk. This study focuses on the geological context and influence of pastoral activities on the soil, augments the distribution of various elements across the Tibetan Plateau, and suggests preliminary soil governance strategies. The findings of this study lay the groundwork for soil environmental conservation and remediation efforts in highland regions.

Vaccinium floribundum Kunth, known as "mortiño," is an endemic shrub species of the Andean region adapted to harsh conditions in high-altitude ecosystems. It plays an important ecological role as a pioneer species in the aftermath of deforestation and human-induced fires within paramo ecosystems, emphasizing its conservation value. While previous studies have offered insights into the genetic diversity of mortiño, comprehensive genomic studies are still missing to fully understand the unique adaptations of this species and its population status, highlighting the importance of generating a reference genome for this plant. ONT and Illumina sequencing were used to establish a reference genome for this species. Three different de novo genome assemblies were generated and compared for quality, continuity and completeness. The Flye assembly was selected as the best and refined by filtering out short ONT reads, screening for contaminants and genome scaffolding. The final assembly has a genome size of 529 Mb, containing 1,317 contigs and 97% complete BUSCOs, indicating a high level of integrity of the genome. Additionally, the LTR Assembly Index of 12.93 further categorizes this assembly as a reference genome. The genome of V. floribundum reported in this study is the first reference genome generated for this species, providing a valuable tool for further studies. This high-quality genome, based on the quality and completeness parameters obtained, will not only help uncover the genetic mechanisms responsible for its unique traits and adaptations to high-altitude ecosystems but will also contribute to conservation strategies for a species endemic to the Andes.

In high mountains, the effects of climate change are manifesting most rapidly. This is especially critical for the high-altitude carbon cycle, for which new feedbacks could be triggered. However, mountain carbon dynamics is only partially known. In particular, models of the processes driving carbon fluxes in high-altitude grasslands and Alpine tundra need to be improved. Here, we propose a comparison of three empirical approaches using systematic statistical analysis, to identify the environmental variables controlling CO2 fluxes. The methods were applied to a complete dataset of simultaneous in situ measurements of the net CO2 exchange, ecosystem respiration and basic environmental variables in three sampling sites in the same catchment. Large year-to-year variations in the Gross Primary Production (GPP) and Ecosystem Respiration (ER) dependences on solar irradiance and temperature were observed. We thus implemented a multi regression model in which additional variables were introduced as perturbations of the standard exponential and rectangular hyperbolic functions for ER and GPP, respectively. A comparison of this model with other common modelling strategies showed the benefits of this approach, resulting in large explained variances (83% to 94%). The optimum ensemble of variables explaining the inter- and intra-annual flux variability included solar irradiance, soil moisture and day of the year for GPP, and air temperature, soil moisture, air pressure and day of the year for ER, in agreement with other studies. The modelling approach discussed here provides a basis for selecting drivers of carbon fluxes and understanding their role in high-altitude Alpine ecosystems, also allowing for future short-range assessments of local trends.

The taxonomic position of a novel Amycolatopsis strain isolated from a high altitude Atacama Desert subsurface soil was established using a polyphasic approach. The strain, isolate H5T, was shown to have chemical properties typical of members of the genus Amycolatopsis such as meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diamino acid in the cell wall peptidoglycan, arabinose and galactose as diagnostic sugars and MK-9(H4) as the predominant isoprenologue. It also has cultural and morphological properties consistent with its classification in the genus, notably the formation of branching substrate hyphae which fragment into rod-like elements. 16S rRNA gene sequence analyses showed that the strain is closely related to the type strain of Amycolatopsis mediterranei but could be distinguished from this and other related Amycolatopsis strains using a broad range of phenotypic properties. It was separated readily from the type strain of Amycolatopsis balhymycina, its near phylogenetic neighbour, based on multi-locus sequence data, by low average nucleotide identity (92.9%) and in silico DNA/DNA relatedness values (51.3%) calculated from draft genome assemblies. Consequently, the strain is considered to represent a novel species of Amycolatopsis for which the name Amycolatopsis vastitatis sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is H5T (= NCIMB 14970T = NRRL B-65279T).
