Minipuberty is a term describing transient postnatal activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, likely playing an important role in the postnatal growth of female genital organs and breasts. Unlike infant boys, there are no data concerning the impact of gestational hypothyroidism on the course of minipuberty in infant girls. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to investigate the reproductive axis and genital organs in daughters of women with thyroid hypofunction during pregnancy. The study population included three matched groups of infant girls: offspring of women with thyroid hypofunction non-substituted or inadequately treated during gestation (group 1), descendants of women adequately substituted throughout pregnancy (group 2), and daughters of healthy women (group 3). Salivary concentrations of estradiol, progesterone, 17-hydroxyprogesterone, and androgens (testosterone, androstenedione, and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate) and urine levels of gonadotropins were measured monthly from month 1 to month 6, once every two months between postnatal months 6 and 12, and once every three months between postnatal months 12 and 18. During each visit, we also determined ovarian volume, uterine length, and breast diameter. Concentrations of FSH, LH, and estradiol were lowest in group 1, and this group was also characterized by the shortest detection period for gonadotropins and estradiol. These differences were paralleled by differences in ovarian volume, uterine length, and breast diameter. There were no differences between groups 2 and 3 in levels of both hormones and in the size of the measured structures. The obtained results seem to indicate that non-substituted or inadequately substituted hypothyroidism during pregnancy may impair the course of minipuberty in the female offspring.

The aim of this study is to assess mortality trends due to malignant neoplasms of female genital organs (MNFGOs) in Poland between 2000 and 2021. For the purpose of the study, the authors used data on all deaths of Polish female inhabitants due to MNFGO between 2000 and 2021, obtained from the Statistics Poland database. The standardised death rates (SDR), potential years of life lost (PYLL), annual percentage change (APC) and average annual percentage change (AAPC) were calculated. Between the years 2000 and 2021, 138,000 women died due to MNFGOs in Poland. Of this number, 54,975 (39.8%) deaths were caused by ovarian cancer, 37,487 (27.2%) by cervix uteri cancer, and 26,231 (19.0%) by corpus uteri cancer. A decrease in mortality due to cervix uteri cancer (APC = -2.4%, p < 0.05) was the most favourable change that occurred in the period 2000-2021, while the least favourable change was an increase in mortality due to corpus uteri cancer for the period 2005-2019 (APC = 5.0%, p < 0.05). SDRs due to ovarian cancer showed a decreasing trend between 2007 and 2021 (APC = -0.5%, p < 0.05). The standardised PYLL index due to cervical cancer was 167.7 per 100,000 women in 2000 and decreased to 75.0 in 2021 (AAPC = -3.7, p < 0.05). The number of lost years of life due to ovarian cancer decreased from 143.8 in 2000 to 109.5 in 2021 (AAPC = -1.3, p < 0.05). High values of death rates due to MNFGO in Poland, compared to other European countries, show that there is a need to promote preventive programmes and continue to monitor changes in mortality.

Background: Fallopian tubal tuberculosis (FTTB), which typically presents with non-specific clinical symptoms and mimics ovarian malignancies clinically and radiologically, often affects young reproductive females and can lead to infertility if not promptly managed. Early diagnosis by imaging modalities is crucial for initiating timely anti-tuberculosis (anti-TB) treatment. Currently, comprehensive radiological descriptions of this relatively rare disease are limited. We aimed to comprehensively investigate the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics of FTTB in patients from the Kashi area, which has the highest incidence of TB in China, to extend radiologists' understanding of this disease. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional study of 26 patients diagnosed with FTTB at the First People's Hospital of Kashi Area. All the patients underwent abdominal and pelvic contrast-enhanced CT examinations and/or pelvic contrast-enhanced MRI from January 2017 to June 2022. The imaging findings were evaluated in consensus by two experienced radiologists specialized in abdominal and pelvic imaging. The evaluated sites included the fallopian tubes, ovaries, peritoneum, mesentery, retroperitoneal nodes, and parailiac nodes. The patient characteristics are reported using descriptive statistics. The patient imaging results are presented as percentages. The normally distributed continuous variables are reported as the mean ± standard deviation (SD), and otherwise as the median with the interquartile range (IQR). Results: The median age of the patients was 27 years (IQR: 25-34 years). Bilateral involvement of the fallopian tubes was observed in all patients. The tubal wall appeared coarse with tiny intraductal nodules in 96% (25 of 26) of the patients. The mean CT value of the tubal contents was 34 Hounsfield units (HUs; SD: 3.3 HUs). Ascites was present in 92% (24 of 26) of the patients, with 20 patients showing encapsulated effusion. Among these patients, 20 exhibited the highest CT values of ascites (>20 HUs). Linear enhancement of the parietal peritoneum was observed in 88% (23 of 26) of the patients, of whom 22 had peritoneal nodules measuring a median diameter of 0.4 cm (IQR: 0.3-0.6 cm). Eight patients had retroperitoneal and parailiac nodal enlargement, of whom two showed nodal necrosis, and none displayed nodal calcification. Conclusions: FTTB is consistently accompanied by tuberculous peritonitis. FTTB typically presents with tubal dilation, and coarseness and nodules in the lumen, as well as intraductal caseous material and calcification. Tuberculous peritonitis exhibits high-density ascites, peritoneal adhesion, linear enhancement of the parietal peritoneum, and tiny peritoneal nodules. The co-occurrence of these features strongly suggests a diagnosis of FTTB.

Computed tomography (CT) may show a variety of scrotal and penile pathologic finding, but is usually not used as a first-line imaging due to its limited soft tissue contrast. Nonetheless, there are three main scenarios for imaging of the scrotum and penis with CT. Pathologies may be found incidentally in patients undergoing abdominal and pelvic CT scanning for different reasons. In emergency settings, CT is frequently performed, and the recognition of scrotal and penile pathologies by the reporting radiologist is crucial to ensure optimal patient treatment and outcome. If MRI scanning cannot be performed due to contraindications or is unavailable in resource, limited CT may be used for the further characterization of scrotal and penile pathology found on ultrasound. This pictorial review wants to familiarize general and emergency radiologists with the anatomy and possible pathological findings of the scrotum and penis on CT.

Minipuberty is a period of increased reproductive axis activity in infancy, which seems to be implicated in the postnatal development of male genital organs. Impaired thyroid function during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal complications. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the presence of hypothyroidism during pregnancy modulates the course of male minipuberty. We compared three matched groups of male infants: sons of women with hypothyroidism uncontrolled or poorly controlled during pregnancy (group A), male offspring of women treated over the entire pregnancy with adequate doses of levothyroxine (group B), and sons born to women with no evidence of thyroid disease (group C). Salivary levels of testosterone, androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, estradiol, progesterone, and 17-hydroxyprogesterone, as well as urine concentrations of FSH and LH, were assessed once a month in the first 6 months of life, and once every two months between months 6 and 12. Gonadotropin and testosterone levels during the first 6 months of life were lower in group A than in groups B and C. Differences in testosterone and gonadotropin levels were accompanied by similar differences in penile length and testicular volume. Concentrations of the remaining hormones did not differ between the study groups. The obtained results suggest that untreated or undertreated maternal thyroid hypofunction in pregnancy has an inhibitory effect on postnatal activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis and genital organ development in their male offspring.

Minipuberty is a transient phase of reproductive axis activation during the first several months of life, playing an important role in the development of reproductive organs in boys. Low 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels during pregnancy are associated with an increased risk of neonatal complications. An inadequate gestational vitamin D status is hypothesized to affect the postnatal activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. The purpose of our study was to assess whether a low vitamin D status during pregnancy determines the course of minipuberty in boys. The study included three groups of male infants born to women with different vitamin D statuses: sons of women with vitamin D deficiency (group 1), sons of women with vitamin D insufficiency (group 2), and male offspring of females with normal 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels (group 3 (the reference group)). Concentrations of testosterone, androstenedione, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, estradiol, progesterone, and 17-hydroxyprogesterone in saliva, as well as concentrations of gonadotropins in urine, were assayed monthly from postnatal months 1 to 6, and once every 2 months in the second half of the first year of life. Additionally, at each visit, penile length and testicular volume were assessed. Concentrations of testosterone, FSH, and LH, as well as penile length and testicular volume, were greater in group 1 than in groups 2 and 3. In turn, group 2 was characterized by higher FSH levels and a greater testicular volume than group 3. Peak concentrations of LH and testosterone were observed earlier in group 1 than in the remaining groups. The obtained results suggest that a low vitamin D status during pregnancy may have a stimulatory impact on reproductive axis activity and on the early postnatal development of male genital organs, correlating with the severity of hypovitaminosis D.

Introduction: Peripheral neuropathy (PNP) in feet and/or hands and sexual dysfunction are common side effects of cancer therapies. In patients with other diseases, there is evidence of an association between peripheral nervous system disorders and sexual dysfunction due to the impact of impaired neuronal control on genital organ sensitivity. In cancer patient interviews, it has now been observed that PNP and sexual dysfunction may be related. The aim of the study was to investigate the potential association between PNP, sexual dysfunction, and physical activity behavior. Methods: Ninety-three patients with PNP of the feet and/or hands were interviewed in August/September 2020 in a cross-sectional study regarding medical history, sexual dysfunction and functionality of the genital organs. Results: Thirty-one persons who participated in the survey provided seventeen evaluable questionnaires (four men, thirteen women). Nine women (69%) and three men (75%) reported sensory disorders of the genital organs. Three men (75%) had erectile dysfunction. All men who had sensory symptoms of the genital organs received chemotherapy, and one man also received immunotherapy. Eight women were sexually active. Five (63%) of them reported genital organ symptoms and mainly lubrication disorders. Four (80%) of the five sexually inactive women reported genital organ symptoms. Eight of the nine women with sensory symptoms of the genital organs received chemotherapy, and one woman received immunotherapy. Discussion: Our limited data suggest genital organ sensory symptoms in chemotherapy and immunotherapy patients. Genital organ symptoms do not appear to be directly related to sexual dysfunction, and the association between PNP and genital organ symptoms appears to be more pronounced in sexually inactive women. Chemotherapy could cause sensory symptoms of the genital organs and sexual dysfunction by damaging genital organ nerve fibers. Chemotherapy and anti-hormone therapy (AHT) could trigger a disturbance of the hormone balance, which in turn could be causative for sexual dysfunction. It remains open whether the cause of these disorders is the symptomatology of the genital organs or the altered hormone balance. The significance of the results is limited due to the small number of cases. To our knowledge, this study is the first of its kind in cancer patients and allows a better understanding of the association between PNP, sensory symptoms of the genital organs, and sexual dysfunction. Conclusion: In order to be able to narrow down the cause of these initial observations in cancer patients more precisely, larger studies are needed that can relate the influence of cancer therapy-induced PNP, physical activity level and hormone balance to sensory symptoms of the genital organs and sexual dysfunction. The methodology of further studies should take into account the frequent problem of low response rates in surveys on sexuality.

BACKGROUND: N-glycosylation of the haptoglobin is closely related to pathological states. This study aims to evaluate the association of glycosylation of disease-specific Hp (DSHp) ß chain with different pathological states of the cervix, uterus, and ovary to explore differences in their inflammatory responses and to screen potential biomarkers to distinguish cancer from benign diseases. METHODS: DSHp-ß chains of 1956 patients with cancers and benign diseases located in the cervix, uterus, and ovary organs were separated from serum immunoinflammatory-related protein complexes (IIRPCs). The N-glycopeptides from DSHp-ß chains were detected using mass spectrometry, followed by an analysis of machine learning algorithms. RESULTS: 55 N-glycopeptides at N207/N211, 19 at N241, and 21 at N184 glycosylation sites of DSHp for each sample were identified. Fucosylation and sialylation of DSHp in cervix, uterus, and ovary cancer were significantly increased compared to their corresponding benign diseases (p < 0.001). The cervix diagnostic model, a combination of G2N3F, G4NFS, G7N2F2S5, GS-N&GS-N, G2N2&G4N3FS, G7N2F2S5, G2S2&G-N, and GN2F&G2F at N207/N211 sites, G3NFS2 and G3NFS at N241site, G9N2S, G6N3F6, G4N3F5S, G4N3F4S2, and G6N3F4S at N184 site), has shown a good diagnostic capability to distinguish cancer from benign diseases, with the area under curve (AUC) of 0.912. The uterus diagnostic model including G4NFS, G2S2&G2S2, G3N2S2, GG5N2F5, G2&G3NFS, and G5N2F3S3 at N207/N211 sites, and G2NF3S2 at N184 site, with an AUC of 0.731. The ovary diagnostic model including G2N3F, GF2S-N &G2F3S2, G2S&G2, and G2S&G3NS at N207/N211 sites; G2S and G3NFS at N241 site, G6N3F4S at N184 site, with an AUC of 0.747. CONCLUSIONS: These findings provide insights into differences in organ-specific inflammatory responses of DSHp for different pathological states among the organs of the cervix, uterus, and ovary.

In this work, the presence of species of the slug family Milacidae in Switzerland was investigated by using the barcoding marker cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) as well as traits of the body and the genital organs. Currently, three species of Tandonia living in Switzerland in established populations could be reported, i.e., T.rustica, T.budapestensis, and T.nigra. The three records of Milaxgagates were re-investigated, but only for one of these records could the identification be reconfirmed. This species has currently no established and thriving population in Switzerland. For all species recorded, detailed descriptions of body morphology, genital anatomy, and distribution data are provided based on the investigated Swiss animals. An unknown pale colour morph of a Tandonia sp. from Canton Ticino could be identified as T.nigra, and the barcodes of T.nigra specimens were submitted to GenBank for the first time. The identity of the Italian and Austrian populations of T.nigra from the Bergamasque Alps and north Tirol is evaluated. Observations on details of the morphology of the genital organs in T.rustica vs. T.kusceri are discussed.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis of the genitourinary system is still of importance. The observed decrease in the incidence of urogenital tuberculosis is largely due to the inaccuracies of registering this disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort comparative non-interventional study of the structure of urogenital tuberculosis in the Siberian and Far Eastern federal districts was carried out. We analyzed statistical reports from 2003 to 2015, which included data for a total of 456 patients, as well as extended questionnaires compiled specifically for this study. In addition, outpatient records of 95 patients with urogenital tuberculosis who were registered at the Novosibirsk Regional Tuberculosis Dispensary by 01/01/2022 were evaluated. RESULTS: An analysis of the structure of urogenital tuberculosis from 2003 to 2015 showed that urinary system was affected in the most of cases (n=314, 68.8%). Tuberculosis of male and female genital organs took the second place (n=101, 22.2%) patients. Generalized urogenital tuberculosis was diagnosed in 41 (9%) patients. From 2003 to 2008, the proportion of renal tuberculosis increased by 12.6%, but then a significant decrease in its proportion was found (82.2% in 2008 vs. 48.6% in 2015 [2 =12.71; =0.0004]). On the contrary, in 2003 the proportion of genital tuberculosis was 18% (n=18) compared to 29.1% (n=3) in 2015 (2 =3.46; p=0.06). In 2015, generalized forms of urogenital tuberculosis were diagnosed in 23 (22.3%) patients, which is approximately 2.5 times more than in 2003 (n=9; 9%) and 2008 (n=7; 6.6%) (2> 6.46; p<0.01). The proportion of prostate tuberculosis ranged from 0 in 2003 and 7.1% in 2008 to 54.2% in 2013. In 2003, tuberculosis of the scrotum was diagnosed in 100% of men with genital tuberculosis, while in 2013 and 2015 its proportion was 25%. In total, scrotal tuberculosis during whole follow-up was diagnosed in 26 patients, which accounted for 41.9% of all male genital tuberculosis. The combination of tuberculosis of the scrotum and prostate also varied significantly from 17.3 to 35.7%. Generalized urogenital tuberculosis was diagnosed with a minimum proportion (1.4%) in 2008, then there was an upward trend with a maximum rate in 2015 (22.3%, 2 =29.38; <0.0001). Among 95 patients with tuberculosis of the urinary and male reproductive system, who were followed by the phthisiourologist of Novosibirsk Regional Tuberculosis Dispensary, 34 (35.8%) had a diagnosis of kidney tuberculosis, 42 (44.2%) had isolated tuberculosis of the male genital organs, and the remaining 19 (20.0%) men had generalized urogenital tuberculosis. In total, HIV infection was detected in 23 (24.2%) patients with urogenital tuberculosis, and among patients with kidney tuberculosis, it was diagnosed in 7 (20.6%) cases compared to 9 (21.4%) cases in those with male sexual tuberculosis. In patients with generalized urogenital tuberculosis, HIV infection was detected almost 2 times more often, namely in 7 (36.8%) cases. CONCLUSION: Patients with urogenital tuberculosis are under follow-up of urologists for a long time with erroneous diagnoses, and only when the disease becomes irreversible and requires surgical intervention, the pathomorphological study of the surgical material will allow to make a proper diagnosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Different species of trypanosomes have been reported to cause varying degrees of reproductive disorders in pregnant and non-pregnant animals under experimental infections. Information on reproductive disorders and losses in animals naturally infected with trypanosome species are few. This study was carried out to assess the abnormalities in the genital organs (ovaries, oviduct, uterus, cervix, and vagina) of female cattle naturally infected with trypanosomes in and around Abuja, Nigeria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cows showing signs such as emaciation, weakness, or anemia were selected and examined at Gwagwalada and Karu abattoirs, respectively. Venous blood samples were taken from 108 of such animals and screened using standard trypanosome detection methods. The genital organs were also collected and inspected for gross and histopathological lesions in the laboratory. RESULTS: Six (5.55%) out of the 108 animals were positive for trypanosomes; 4 (66.7%) were infected with Trypanosoma vivax and 2 (33.3%) were infected with Trypanosoma congolense. The mean packed cell volume of the infected animals was 22.83%. Grossly, congestion and ecchymotic hemorrhages were observed in the endometrium, myometrium, and cervical submucosa. Mucometra, hydrometra, and pyometra were also seen in the uterus. Histologically, necrosis of the epithelium and endometrial glands accompanied by mononuclear cellular infiltration was observed in the uterus. There was also sloughing of the endometrial epithelium, vascular congestion, and hypertrophy of serosa of the uterus. There was atropy of the granulosa cells, increased numbers of degenerating tertiary follicles, and absence of corpora lutea in the ovary. No gross or histopathological lesions were observed in the fallopian tube and vagina. CONCLUSION: The lesions observed were restricted to the uterus and ovary of the animals and were less severe when compared to lesions observed under experimental conditions as reported by previous authors.

Establishing species boundaries is one of the challenges taxonomists around the world have been tackling for centuries. The relation between intraspecific and interspecific variability is still under discussion and in many taxa it remains understudied. Here the hypothesis of single versus multiple species of the crab spider Synemaglobosum (Fabricius) is tested. The wide distribution range as well as its high morphological variability makes this species an interesting candidate for re-evaluation using an integrative approach. This study combines information from barcoding, phylogenetic reconstruction based on mitochondrial CO1 and ITS2 of more than 60 specimens collected over a wide range of European localities, and morphology. The findings show deep clades with up to 6% mean pairwise distance in the CO1 barcode without any biogeographical pattern. The nuclear ITS2 gene did not support the CO1 clades. Morphological assessment of somatic and genital characters in males and females and a morphometric analysis of the male palp uncovered high intraspecific variation that does not match the CO1 or ITS2 phylogenies or biogeography either. Screening for endosymbiotic Wolbachia bacteria was conducted and only a single infected specimen was found. Several scenarios might explain these inconsistent patterns. While the deep divergences in the barcoding marker might suggest cryptic or ongoing speciation or geographical isolation in the past, the lack of congruent variation in the nuclear ITS2 gene or the studied morphological character systems, especially the male palp, indicates that S.globosum might simply be highly polymorphic both in terms of its mtDNA and morphology. Therefore, more data on ecology and behaviour and full genome sequences are necessary to ultimately resolve this taxonomically intriguing case.

The latest official version issued by the Federative International Program on Anatomical Terminology was approved by the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists in 1998 as Terminologia Anatomica (TA). Second edition of the TA (TA2) has now been prepared for approval. Each change must be meticulously discussed and considered as it affects and influences not only anatomists but also all clinicians, physicians, scientists, teachers, and students in medical fields. There are several reasons for direct and deliberate changes, but also reasons for rejection of changes that could lead to disintegration and rejection of the nomenclature revision by the expert population. The latter reasons comprise changes of terms with originally different (inappropriate/incorrect/erroneous) meanings or with originally potentially vulgar meanings that are nowadays perceived as neutral. Some examples and explanations concerning the names of the principal structures of the female external genitalia (vulva, cunnus, pudendum, labia pudenda, rima pudendi, clitoris, and perineum) and some internal ones (vagina, uterus) in Latin and Greek are given. An overview is presented of the development and frequency of their usage, mainly in ancient times but also in medieval and later texts. It is suggested that the above-stated reasons provide no fundamental argument for changing the terminology, as all the Latin terms used in TA are nowadays considered neutral.

RESUMEN

Radiation therapy for malignant tumors of the female genital area, even with the use of modern radiotherapy equipment and dosimetric planning, causes the development of local radiation changes. An approach involving methodsof general and local exposure is used in their treatment. One of the most promising directions is the creation of optimal combinations of medicines (in the form of ointments, gels, aerosols, suppositories, etc.), which have a therapeutic effect on the inflammatory process. The article reflects the clinical course and stage of occurrence of late radiation reactions of the skin, vaginal/cervix mucosa, bladder, and intestines, as well as the features of their treatment.Literary data and own practical experience in the treatment of radiation complications are presented. Whenreviewing the topic under study, it could be concluded that the leading cause of the development of local radiationdamage is the errors in the planning and implementation of radiation therapy, when high absorbed doses thatexceed the tolerance of healthy tissues are used. Another reason for this is the poor accounting for dose distribution of ionizing radiation in tissues, the presence of concomitant diseases in patients, and the underestimation ofthe long-term effects of radiation.

BACKGROUND: The increasing aging population has been posing a significant challenge to disease burden in developing countries. In particular, the contribution of population aging to and long term changes of disease burden of malignant neoplasm of female genital organs (MNFGO) have not been quantitatively demonstrated. METHODS: Data were collected from the Shanghai Vital Statistics System of Pudong New Area (PNA). Crude mortality rate (CMR), age-standardized mortality rate by Segi's world standard population (ASMRW), and years of life lost (YLL) of MNFGO as the underlying cause of death in age and pathology types from 1995 to 2018 were calculated. The joinpoint regression was used to estimate the trends of those rates by identifying the annual percent changes (APCs), and the decomposition method was used to calculate the increased rates and the contribution resulting from demographic and non-demographic factors. RESULTS: From 1995 to 2018, a total of 2869 MNFGO-specific deaths were reported in PNA, accounting for 0.64% of the total deaths. The CMR and ASMRW of MNFGO were 9.23/105 person-years and 4.80/105 person-years, respectively. Ovary cancer was the most common cause of MNFGO death, accounting for 43.9% (1260/2869) of all MNFGO death. Other common causes of MNFGO death included cervix uteri cancer, uterus unspecified cancer, and corpus uteri cancer. With the increase of age, the mortality rate of MNFGO in residents had shown an upward trend ([APC (95%CI) = 3.46 (2.74, 4.18), P < 0.001)] for each five-year age group from 0 to 4 to 85+ years. From 1995 to 2018, YLL of MNFGO in Shanghai PNA was 42,152.82 years, and the rate of YLL was 135.56 /105. The top three MNFGO types in YLLs were ovary cancer, cervix uteri cancer and uterus unspecified cancer. Demographic factors contributed significantly to the upward trends of CMR, ASMRW, and YLL rates of MNFGO. CONCLUSION: With aggravated population aging in Shanghai, MNFGO is and will continue to be a serious threat to women's health. More precise and effective prevention strategies are needed to target high risk population, to achieve efficient health resource allocation and to improve women's health in particular.

RESUMEN

The article is devoted to the interaction of a gynecologist and a urologist in a gynecological hospital, based on the experience of the gynecological department at the Clinic of obstetrics and gynecology of the Clinical Center of Sechenov University. The most common clinical scenarios were identified when the participation of a urologist in evaluation and treatment is urgently needed, including large pelvis mass, endometriosis with an involvement of pelvic organs, genital prolapse, small pelvis adhesions as a result of previous surgical procedures and postoperative urinary disorders. A close interaction between two specialties, which are dedicated to pelvic organs disorders, namely gynecology and urology, is extremely popular in modern clinical practice and allows to significantly reduce the number of intra- and postoperative complications, carry out a comprehensive examination and determine individual treatment tactics in a gynecological hospital, which increases quality of medical care.

This study investigated the innervation of internal genital organs in 5-, 7- and 10-week-old female pig foetuses using single and double-labelling immunofluorescence methods. The structure and topography of the organs was examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The investigations revealed differences in the innervation between the three developmental periods. Immunostaining for protein gene product 9.5 (PGP; general neural marker) disclosed solitary nerve fibres in the external part of the gonadal ridge and just outside of the mesenchyme surrounding mesonephric ducts in 5-week-old foetuses. Double-labelling immunohistochemistry revealed that nerve fibres associated with the ridge expressed dopamine ß-hydroxylase (DßH; adrenergic marker) or vesicular acetylcholine transporter (VAChT; cholinergic marker). In 7-week-old foetuses, the PGP-positive nerve terminals were absent from the gonad but some of them ran outside and along, and sometimes penetrated into the mesenchyme surrounding the tubal and uterine segments of the paramesonephric ducts and uterovaginal canal. Few axons penetrated into the mesenchyme. DßH-positive fibres were found in single nerve strands or bundles distributed at the edge of the mesenchyme. VAChT-positive nerve terminals formed delicate bundles located at the edge of the mesenchyme, and the single nerves penetrated into the mesenchyme. DßH was also expressed by neurons which formed cell clusters comprising also DßH- or VAChT-positive nerve fibres. In 10-week-old foetuses, PGP-positive nerve fibres were still absent from the ovary but some were distributed in the mesenchyme associated with the uterovaginal canal and uterine and a tubal segment of the paramesonephric ducts, respectively. DßH- or VAChT-positive nerve fibres were distributed at the periphery of the mesenchyme associated with the uterovaginal canal. Some DßH- and many VAChT-positive nerve fibres were evenly distributed throughout the mesenchyme. The clusters of nerve cells comprised DßH-positive perikarya and DßH- or VAChT-positive nerve fibres. The investigations revealed no DßH/VAChT-positive nerve fibres or neurons as well as no nerve structures stained for calcitonin gene-related peptide and/or substance P (sensory markers) associated with the genital organs in the studied prenatal periods.

RESUMO Objetivo caracterizar o perfil sociodemográfico e clínico de mulheres com câncer no trato genital submetidas à radioterapia no Centro de Pesquisas Oncológicas entre 2010 e 2014. Método estudo ecológico realizado em 880 arquivos do Registro Hospitalar de Câncer. A análise ocorreu por estatística descritiva, com cálculo de taxa de prevalência. Resultados a maior incidência, 204 casos (23,18%) ocorreu na faixa etária dos 40-49 anos; com maior taxa de prevalência dos 60 a 69 anos, 165 casos (82,28%) para cada 100.000 mulheres. Estádio III com 315 casos (35,8%), topografia colo do útero com 695 casos (78,97%) e respectivas taxas de prevalências 12,97%, 28,61%. Dos casos de câncer do colo do útero, 274 (39,77%) foram procedentes da Grande Florianópolis e 99 (14,37%) da macrorregião Sul. Conclusão reafirma-se a magnitude do câncer do colo do útero, a necessidade das políticas públicas para prevenção da doença e do diagnóstico precoce das lesões pré-neoplásicas e/ou neoplásicas.

Método estudio ecológico que se realizó por medio de 880 archivos del Registro Hospitalario de Cáncer. El análisis se hizo por estadística descriptiva, con cálculo de taja de prevalencia. Resultados la mayor incidencia, 204 casos (23,18%), ocurrió en la franja etaria de los 40-49 años; con mayor taja de prevalencia de los 60 a 69 años, 165 casos (82,28%) para cada 100.000 mujeres. Estadio III con 315 casos (35,8%), topografía de cuello del útero con 695 casos (78,97%) y respectivas tajas de prevalencias 12,97%, 28,61%. De los casos de cáncer del cuello de útero, 274 (39,77%) ocurrieron en la Grande Florianópolis (Santa Catarina, Brasil) y 99 (14,37%) en la macro región Sur. Conclusión se reafirman la magnitud del cáncer de cuello del útero, la necesidad de las políticas públicas para prevención de la enfermedad y el diagnóstico precoz de las lesiones pre neoplásicas y/o neoplásicas.

Of the total cases of cervical cancer, 274 (39.77%) were from Grande Florianópolis (Santa Catarina, Brazil) and 99 (14.37%) from the southern macro-region. Conclusion The importance of cervical cancer, the need for public policies for disease prevention and early diagnosis of pre-neoplastic and/or cancer lesions are reaffirmed here.

Morphological characterisation of the genital organs of primates may bring significant contributions to the understanding of different reproductive behaviours and support new conservation strategies. However, relevant or detailed descriptions of genital morphology of several primate species are still lacking. This study describes the gross and microscopic anatomy of the internal and external genitalia of Marca's marmoset (Mico marcai). The same organs described in other primate species were identified here, but some anatomical particularities were detected, such as absence of a dartos tunic, presence of a vas deferens ampulla, absence of spongious erectile tissue in the pelvic urethra, separation of prostate gland lobes by a longitudinal sulcus and lack of septation in the corpus cavernosus and spongiosus at the level of the shaft and free portion of the penis. Keratinised type 1 spicules arising from epidermal or dermal projections were found in the free portion of the penis. Microscopic analysis revealed a small bone (baculum) consisting of peripheral compact bone and a central, non-ossified area filled with vascular tissue at the distal end of this portion of the penis. Results of this study may support further comparative studies of primates' reproductive ecology.
