RESUMEN

The Fundão dam collapse was one of the largest mining-related disasters globally. It resulted in the release of mining tailings containing heavy metals, which contaminated the Doce River in southeastern Brazil. This study assessed the effects of acute exposure of Danio rerio embryos to sediments contaminated by mine tailings six years after the Fundão dam collapse. The study sites included P2, P3, and P4 in the upper Doce River, as well as site P1 on the Piranga River, an uncontaminated river. Sediment samples were analyzed for 10 metals/metalloid by atomic absorption spectrometry. In the assays, embryos were exposed to sediment from P1-P4 sites, and uncontaminated quartz was used as control sediment. Various biomarkers were applied to assess biological responses, and the integrated biomarker response (IBR) index was calculated for each site. Sediment samples revealed elevated levels of As, Cr, Cu, Hg, and Ni beyond Brazilian legislation limits. At 96-h exposure, embryo mortality rates exceeded 20% in P1, P2, and P3, higher than the control and P4 (p < 0.0001). Hatching rates ranged from 60 to 80% in P1, P2, and P3, lower than the control and P4 (p < 0.001). Larvae exposed to P2 sediment (closest to the Fundão dam) exhibited skeletal, physiological, and sensory malformations. Neurotoxicity was indicated by increased acetylcholinesterase activity and reduced spontaneous movements in embryos exposed to Doce River sediment. Contamination also increased metallothionein and heat shock protein 70 levels, along with changes in cell proliferation and apoptosis. Principal component analysis showed a good correlation between metals/metalloid in the sediment and larval morphometric endpoints. The IBR index highlighted suitable biomarkers for monitoring metal contamination in fish embryos. Overall, our findings suggest that sediment toxicity following the Fundão dam failure may compromise the sustainability of fish communities in the Doce River.

In November 2015, a catastrophic rupture of the Fundão dam in Mariana (Brazil), resulted in extensive socio-economic and environmental repercussions that persist to this day. In response, several reforestation programs were initiated to remediate the impacted regions. However, accurately assessing soil health in these areas is a complex endeavor. This study employs machine learning techniques to predict soil quality indicators that effectively differentiate between the stages of recovery in these areas. For this, a comprehensive set of soil parameters, encompassing 3 biological, 16 chemical, and 3 physical parameters, were evaluated for samples exposed to mining tailings and those unaffected, totaling 81 and 6 samples, respectively, which were evaluated over 2 years. The most robust model was the decision tree with a restriction of fewer levels to simplify the tree structure. In this model, Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), Microbial Biomass Carbon (MBC), Base Saturation (BS), and Effective Cation Exchange Capacity (eCEC) emerged as the most pivotal factors influencing model fitting. This model achieved an accuracy score of 92% during training and 93% during testing for determining stages of recovery. The model developed in this study has the potential to revolutionize the monitoring efforts conducted by regulatory agencies in these regions. By reducing the number of parameters that necessitate evaluation, this enhanced efficiency promises to expedite recovery monitoring, simultaneously enhancing cost-effectiveness while upholding the analytical rigor of assessments.

Here, we used distribution models to predict the size of the environmentally suitable area for shrimps of fishing interest that were impacted by the tailing plume from the collapse of the Fundão Dam, one of the largest ecological disasters ever to occur in Brazil. Species distribution models (SDMs) were generated for nine species of penaeid shrimp that occurred in the impacted region. Average temperature showed the highest percentage of contribution for SDMs. The environmental suitability of penaeids varied significantly in relation to the distance to the coast and mouth river. The area of environmental suitability of shrimps impacted by tailings plumes ranged from 27 to 47 %. Notably, three protected areas displayed suitable conditions, before the disaster, for until eight species. The results obtained by the SDMs approach provide crucial information for conservation and restoration efforts of coastal biodiversity in an impacted region with limited prior knowledge about biodiversity distribution.

Monitoring of contaminant levels in wildlife over time is a tool for assessing the presence and persistence of environmental impacts at ecosystem, community and population levels. Tropical seabirds breeding in the Abrolhos Archipelago, 70 km off the Brazilian coast, forage in areas under the influence of the Doce River discharge. In 2015, the Fundão Dam collapsed and released ca 60 million tons of iron ore tailings into the ocean. In the present study, red-billed tropicbirds Phaethon aethereus and brown boobies Sula leucogaster breeding in Abrolhos were monitored over four years (2019-2022) for metal (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cr, Hg, Pb, Cd) and metalloid (As) concentrations in blood and feathers. Over six sampling events, metal (loid) concentrations showed strong temporal variation in both tissues. Overall, feathers showed greater element concentrations than blood, with stronger correlations between elements, especially Mn and the nonessential As, Cd, Hg and Pb. Mn is one of the major chemical markers of the Fundão Dam tailings. Metal (loid) concentrations in the tropical seabirds evaluated were above suggested threshold levels for most nonessential elements (As, Cd and Pb), especially in February 2021, when metal (loid) concentrations peaked in feathers. In this case, values were orders of magnitude higher than those observed in other sampling events. This occurred one year after a major rainy season in the Doce River basin, which increased river discharge of contaminated mud into the ocean, where contaminants are further remobilized by winds and currents, resulting in transference through the marine food web. This finding is consistent to what has been observed for other ecosystem compartments monitored in the region under the influence of the Doce River. Our findings highlight the utility of using tropical seabirds as sentinels of marine pollution, revealing strong temporal patterns in metal (loid) concentrations associated to bottom-up climatic processes.

The Fundão Dam breached on 5 November 2015 (the "Event"), resulting in the release of tailings, water, scoured sediment and/or soil, and other debris to downstream watercourses. Statistical analyses using historical and recent water quality measurements were conducted to assess the extent to which water quality in the Rio Doce was recovering to baseline conditions. A review of station- and/or parameter-specific water quality time series in the Rio Doce revealed two challenges: pre-Event data imbalance and seasonality. Due to the combined effects of these two factors, data gathered from Rio Doce water quality stations before the Event likely underestimated concentration ranges and limited the usefulness of common recovery assessment techniques such as times series and water quality standard exceedance analyses. These challenges were addressed by calculating quarterly and watershed-specific river-to-tributary ratios. R code was used to produce spatiotemporal time series for 44 investigated parameters that were measured both before and after the Event. The water quality recovery durations shown by the parameter- and/or region-specific river-to-tributary ratio time series indicated that (a) turbidity provides the most conservative measure for water quality recovery; (b) chemical parameters associated with the tailings, like manganese and iron recovered faster than turbidity; and (c) other investigated parameters unrelated to the tailings showed either no discernable impact or rapid recovery after the Event. The resulting parameter- and/or region-specific river-to-tributary ratio time series provided reliable and quantifiable estimates of water quality recovery durations. The water quality in the region furthest from Fundão Dam, in Espírito Santo, recovered one year after the Event, while water quality in the closest region to Fundão Dam, upstream of Risoleta Neves (Candonga) Dam, recovered 4.2 years after the Event. The Fundão Dam breach on 5 November 2015 (the "Event") released tailings, water, soil and/or sediments, and other debris to downstream watercourses. This breach included both direct and indirect impacts from scouring of soils and sediments along and within the affected courses. Multivariate statistical techniques were used to determine the potential of fingerprinting the impact of the breach compared to pre-Event water quality conditions and unaffected watercourses. The selection of key parameters is an important first step for multivariate analyses. Analysis of too many parameters can mask important trends and relationships, while analysis of too few may miss significant water quality indicators. A two-phased selection process was used to identify key parameters that indicated impact from the Event: (a) unbiased, principal component analysis to extract chemically dominant profiles among all measured parameters and (b) comparison of metals' concentrations between unaffected soils and/or sediments and tailings samples. Radar charts of key parameters along with statistical comparisons to pre-Event and not-affected waterways were then aggregated over space and time to assess impact and potential recovery to pre-Event conditions. Nine parameters were identified that characterize tailings-related (direct) and background soil and/or sediment-related (indirect) impacts. Spatially and temporally aggregated radar charts and nonparametric Mann-Whitney U tests were used to assess the statistical significance of these impacts during each wet season since the breach. Indirect parameters, like aluminum and lead, returned to pre-Event levels in the first wet season after the Event. The coast of Espírito Santo state (Southeast Brazil) is recognized for its environmental arsenic (As) enrichment and, over the years, mining operations have potentialized it. We aimed to evaluate the effect of Rio Doce discharge on As inputs and the role of iron ore tailings from the Fundão dam disaster in enhancing As contamination in the marine sediment. Two scenarios were evaluated: Predisaster and Postdisaster; dry and wet conditions were considered in each period. High As concentrations were found in the Predisaster (28.44 ± 13.53 µg g-1 ), but a significant increase in As was remarkable during the Postdisaster in the wet season, one year after the disaster (maximum of 58.39 µg g-1 ; geoaccumulation index (Igeo ) Class 3, moderately severe pollution). On that occasion, iron (Fe) oxy-hydroxides from tailings were remobilized from the Rio Doce channel and deposited on the continental shelf bottom. Therefore, chemical interactions among Fe, As, and carbonates were enhanced, resulting in As and Fe coprecipitation and the trapping by carbonate adsorption. Rio Doce discharge seems to be the main factor in As inputs to the inner continental shelf when flooding do not occur previously in samplings, which allows further dispersion of contaminants, although this hypothesis should be tested further. The Fundão dam breach affected the Rio Doce's estuarine and marine environments with water, tailings, scoured soil and/or sediments, and other debris. Time series and standard exceedance analyses are typically used to assess water quality recovery to baseline conditions after deteriorating water quality events. In the absence of historical measurements, impacts to water quality from the Fundão Event were compared with measurements of nearby rivers. Similar river systems with available water quality measurements were grouped into affected and unaffected estuarine and marine waters. Statistical and temporal comparisons of marine waters unaffected by the Rio Doce with those affected by the Rio Doce were evaluated for systematic differences. Multivariate statistical techniques were also used to assess water quality differences. Our results demonstrate that the Fundão dam breach had a short-term water quality impact on marine waters near the Rio Doce mouth. Principal component and comparative time series analyses clearly demonstrated this impact during the 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 wet seasons. The ephemeral effects of the breach, however, did not compromise marine water quality. Exceedances of CONAMA standards for metals remained either at zero or at very low levels during the affected period (<5.7%). Before the start of the next wet season in October 2017, water quality impacts from the Event were statistically indistinguishable from unaffected marine waters, indicating recovery to baseline conditions. The Doce River basin is located in the Brazilian states of Minas Gerais (MG) and Espírito Santo (ES). Anthropogenic expansion throughout the twentieth century heavily modified the bioecological configuration of the region, which was worsened in November 2015 by the collapse of the Fundão tailing dam in Mariana municipality (MG). Local ichthyofauna suffered a loss of environmental quality, which served as an alert to the possible decline of native species and transformation of fish assemblages. Through a systematic literature review, the present study aimed to investigate the recovery stage of fish assemblage after the disaster. To accomplish this, we selected 14 documents reporting species lists and fish distributions in the area principally affected by the disaster. Data collected about fish assemblage (presence/absence) were spatially (upper, middle, and lower sections) and temporally (pre- and post-disaster) arranged, followed by non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis to assess similarity. We applied the Analysis of Similarities (ANOSIM) non-parametric test to confirm statistically significant differences between groups. We complemented the study by searching for the main bioecological characteristics of the most frequent species raised among the selected documents. NMDS showed differences in the similarity of fish assemblages among the three spatial sections, as confirmed by ANOSIM (p < 0.05), but no differences for the temporal component were observed. Nevertheless, we detected a trend based on continental fish assemblage transformation, as determined by the presence of many non-native species in the post-disaster period, suggesting the better resilience of these species over that of native species. The missing of many native species previously easily collected, mainly from the families Characidae, Loricariidae, and Trichomycteridae, suggested the system moving toward a new condition, probably worsened than the previous one. The ichthyofauna of the estuarine environment, on the contrary, seems to have recovered faster than ichthyofauna from the continental environment.

In 2015, the failure of the Fundão dam in Mariana, Brazil released ~43 million m3 of iron mining tailings into the environment. Despite restoration initiatives in the following years, few studies-and most focused on revegetation-have evaluated the effectiveness of the restoration process in areas impacted by the disaster. We aimed to evaluate the responses of the arthropod community in areas impacted by iron mining tailings deposition from the Fundão dam that is in the restoration process. We defined sampling units in the riparian zone of the Gualaxo do Norte River, which is under restoration, and in a native not impacted riparian zone. We collected soil arthropods using pitfall traps and sampled environmental variables in the same sites. We used generalize least squares models (GLS) to test if the restored areas already presented values of arthropod diversity and functional group abundance similar to the reference area and to test which environmental variables are influencing arthropod diversity. We also tested how large the differences of arthropod community composition between the study areas and used the index of indicator species (IndVal) to verify which species could be used as an indicator of reference or restoration areas. The diversity of arthropods and the functional groups of detritivores and omnivores were higher in the native riparian zone. Understory density, soil density, organic matter content, and microbial biomass carbon were the environmental variables that significantly explained the diversity and species composition of arthropods. We show that restoration areas still have different soil arthropod diversity values and community composition when compared to reference areas. Evaluating the response of the arthropod community to the restoration process and long-term monitoring are essential to achieve a satisfactory result in this process and achieve a self-sustaining ecosystem.

The Rio Doce estuary was critically impacted in 2015 by the world's largest mining tailing spill, with still unclear long-term effects on the aquatic biota. Here we present a long-term (2015 to 2020) assessment of estuarine benthic assemblages, where we demonstrate that despite a decline in the absolute concentrations of potentially toxic elements; sediment contamination is still above pre-impact conditions. The presence of these contaminants is likely responsible for a continued low habitat quality for the benthic fauna, characterized by a reduction of 96 % of the macroinvertebrate density and persistent change in the benthic assemblage composition. Our study supports previous work indicating the long-term nature of pollution impacts in estuaries, and demonstrate that although water quality levels were quickly adequate under regulatory terms, they largely lack significance to the overall ecosystem health assessment, as they are not related to the recovery of bottom- dwelling assemblages in estuarine ecosystems.

The main purpose of this study was to build multivariate classification models using water quality monitoring data for the hydrographic basin of the Gualaxo do Norte River, Minas Gerais state, Brazil, which was impacted in 2015 by the rupture of a containment structure for iron ore tailings. A total of 27 points were evaluated, covering areas affected and unaffected by the disaster, with monitoring of chemical, physical, and microbiological variables during the period from July 2016 to June 2017. Multivariate classification techniques were applied to the data, with the aim of developing models to determine when the impacted locations would present characteristics equivalent to those existing prior to the rupture. Classification models constructed using PLS-DA and LDA were able to predict three classes: unaffected main river, affected main river, and tributaries. The first technique was able to clearly differentiate the three classes for the data evaluated, achieving averages corresponding to 90% accuracy. The second method was consistent with the first, identifying the chloride content, conductivity, turbidity, and alkalinity as discriminatory variables, among those monitored, with the relationships among the parameters being coherent with the environmental conditions of the region. The model, with a correct classification rate of 91.67%, enabled identification of the behavior of new samples, using only these easily measured variables. In summary, application of the multivariate statistical tools allowed the development of models capable of providing information about the recovery process of an ecosystem impacted by the greatest environmental disaster to have occurred in Brazil.

At the end of 2015, the Fundão dam belonging to the Samarco S.A. mining company was ruptured, releasing a flood of mud into the Gualaxo do Norte River, which advanced into the Doce River. The aim of the present study was to apply exploratory multivariate approaches to water quality data obtained during sampling campaigns at the Gualaxo do Norte River during the dry and rainy seasons, between July 2016 and June 2017. A total of 27 locations along the river were sampled, covering unaffected areas and regions influenced by the tailings waste from the dam. Determinations of chemical, physical, and microbiological water quality parameters were performed. Application of principal component analysis (PCA) resulted in the first two components together explaining 39.49% and 37.91% of the total variance for the dry and rainy season data, respectively. In both cases, the PCA groups were related to variables such as turbidity and total solids, which both presented higher values in regions affected by the mud flow. These results are in agreement with those obtained by the Kohonen neural network method, where two-dimensional maps confirmed the samples according to the affected and unaffected area by the disaster.

The iron ore tailings released into the Rio Doce basin after the Fundão dam collapse (Brazil), suppressed a large extent of local vegetation. The use of native species and appropriate fertilization techniques, with less economic and environmental impact, must be considered in the process for the restoration of affected areas by the tailings. For this purpose, six native tree species, pioneer (Anadenanthera colubrina, Bixa orellana, and Peltophorum dubium) and secondary (Cedrela fissilis, Handroanthus impetiginosus, and Handroanthus serratifolius), were selected. We used different conditions of fertilization: (1) inorganic fertilization, (2) inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria, (3) combined treatment (fertilizer + inoculum), to evaluate leaf nutrient concentrations, photosynthetic capacity [chlorophyll index, maximum quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) and gas exchange variables], and oxidative metabolism (H2O2, MDA, and antioxidant enzymes). Inoculation resulted in higher concentrations of foliar nitrogen, especially in pioneer species. In all treatments, the secondary species exhibited iron values considered phytotoxic, but showed reduced photosynthetic capacity only when inoculated. The highest concentrations of MDA were observed in inoculated plants of both successional groups. The antioxidant system proved to be effective in preventing oxidative damage for most of the species. These results showed that the use of inoculum can be considered an ecological alternative to inorganic additives in the area affected by iron ore tailings. Despite presenting different photosynthetic and antioxidant strategies, the evaluated species demonstrated potential for use in tailings revegetation projects.

Tailings from iron mining are characterized by high concentrations of iron and manganese oxides, as well as high pH values. With these characteristics, most of the potentially toxic elements (PTE) contained in the tailings are somewhat unavailable. The aim of the present study was to evaluate how a reduction in the pH of iron mine tailings may affect PTE availabilities. The tailings were collected on the banks of the Gualaxo do Norte River (Mariana, MG, Brazil), one of the main areas impacted by the rupture of the Fundão Dam (Barragem de Fundão). A completely randomized experimental design was used, including five pH values (6.4, 5.4, 4.3, 3.7, and 3.4) and five replications. The concentrations of the PTE (Ba, Cr, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, Ni, and Zn) were determined after extraction following different methodologies: USEPA 3051A, DTPA, Mehlich-1, Mehlich-3, and distilled water. A comparison of the available concentrations of the elements in the tailings with those in a soil not impacted by tailings shows that Cr, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Ba, and Co were higher in the soil impacted by the tailings. The different methods used for evaluating the availability of PTE in the tailings at various pH exhibited the following decreasing order in relation to the quantity extracted: Mehlich-3 > Mehlich-1 > DTPA > distilled water. However, regarding sensitivity to change in pH, the order was DTPA > water > Mehlich-1 > Mehlich-3. The increases in the concentrations of PTE due to the reduction in the pH of the tailings did not lead to concentrations that exceed the limits of Brazilian regulations. The DTPA extractant exhibited higher coefficients of correlation between the PTE concentrations and the pH of the tailings, proving to be suitable for use in areas affected by the deposition of iron mine tailings.

Surface sediment concentration (SSC) is linked to several problems related to water quality and its monitoring is costly because of the required fieldwork and laboratory analyses. Thus, sediment measurements are often sporadic, punctual, and performed during a short period. Orbital remote sensing allows the monitoring of SSC along the river channel permitting continuous and spatial information. This work had two objectives: (1) to model the surface concentration of sediments in the main channel of the Doce river using data from Multispectral Instrument (MSI)/Sentinel 2 and Operational Land Imager (OLI)/Landsat 8 satellite sensors; and (2) to compare different linear modeling approaches to select the best variables for SSC monitoring. For comparison with actual field data, we used mean SSC measurements in 14 sediment gauge stations from 2013 to 2020. Reflectance data of the MSI/Sentinel 2 and OLI/Landsat 8 satellites bands and spectral indices related to the monitoring of water resources were used as explanatory variables. Simple and multiple linear regression models (SLR and MLR), least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), and Elastic Net regression were used to predict the SSC. The near-infrared band images from both MSI/Sentinel 2 and OLI/Landsat 8 satellites showed a strong linear relationship with the SSC. Multiple linear regression, LASSO and Elastic Net regressions showed good performance for SSC prediction. Sediment flow maps show an SSC reduction in the Doce river channel in recent years, indicating that part of the material from the Fundão tailings dam rupture may have been transported through sediment resuspension and transport processes.

Currently, more than five years after the Fundão dam failure in Mariana, Minas Gerais, Brazil, Brachiaria decumbens Stapf. is the main grass in pasturelands affected by the mining tailings. The aim of this study was to investigate the reason for this fact as well as to determine the ecophysiological effects of mining tailings on B. decumbens and to test whether mixing the tailings with unaffected local soil enhances the affected soil properties. For the experiment, two different soils were collected, one unaffected soil without mining tailings (Ref) and the mining tailings (Tec), and we also created a mixture with 50 % of each soil type (Ref/Tec). We cultivated B. decumbens in the three soil treatments in a greenhouse for 110 days and evaluated soil physical-chemical properties and plant ecophysiology. Our results show that the tailings (Tec) compromised the normal ecophysiological state of B. decumbens. The species survived these adverse conditions due to its great efficiency in acquiring some elements. The soil management tested by this work mitigated the stress caused by tailings and can represent an alternative for the environmental recovery of the affected soils.

The process of extracting information from data generated in environmental monitoring programs is often carried out using statistical tools, with Statistical Process Control (SPC) showing great potential for application in environmental monitoring. In November 2015, millions of cubic metres of tailings were dumped into the basin of the River Doce with the collapse of the Fundão dam. A study of the impact of this incident requires new approaches in data monitoring and processing, so it was sought to evaluate, using SPC tools, changes in water quality in the basin of the River Doce following the collapse of the dam. Using process charts and the process capability index (PCI), water quality parameters in the Doce and Carmo rivers were evaluated between 2009 and 2020. There, turbidity has improved since 2018, and Mn since 2016. Control charts showed that by December 2020 dissolved Fe was still not within normal pre-event fluctuation patterns. The PCI value showed that the situation worsened after the event for each of the parameters, with the lowest values for Mn and E. coli. By using a reference period, SPC makes it possible to infer the permanence of the impact of extreme pollution on the waterbody, which can be used in the routine monitoring of water quality in such events.

On November 5th, 2015, the Fundão dam collapsed in Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, releasing millions of cubic meters of mud containing mining residue into the Doce River. Two weeks later, the mud arrived to the marine environment, triggering changes in franciscana dolphin habitat, Pontoporia blainvillei, from Franciscana Management Area Ia. This is an isolated population of the most endangered cetacean species in the South Atlantic Ocean. Organohalogen compounds (OHCs) may pose a threat to this endangered population because of their endocrine disrupting properties. Hence, this study sought to determine if there were differences in the bioaccumulation profile of OHC (PCBs, DDTs, Mirex, HCB, HCHs, PBDEs, PBEB, HBBZ and MeO-BDEs) in franciscana dolphins before and after dam collapse and to build a temporal trend. Blubber of 33 stranded individuals was collected in Espírito Santo state for organohalogen assessment between 2003 and 2019. Differences were found between franciscana dolphins collected prior to and after the disaster. Additionally, significant temporal trends for organochlorine pesticides and natural and anthropogenic organobromine were detected. The increase in pesticide concentrations after 2015 is suggestive of their reavailability in the environment. The decline in organobromine over time could be due to their debromination in the marine environment and alterations in the composition of their natural producers. PCBs remained stable during the period of the study. Our findings show an increase in endocrine disruptor concentrations, which is of great concern for this endangered population.

One of the largest environmental disasters worldwide occurred on November 5th, 2015, when the Fundão dam collapsed in Mariana (Minas Gerais State, Southeast Brazil). The tailing mud flooded the Doce River basin and reached the sea in the coast of Espírito Santo State (ES), Southeast Brazil. This coastal region is the habitat of the most isolated population of franciscana dolphins (Pontoporia blainvillei), with the lowest populational census and lowest genetic diversity in Franciscana Management Area Ia (FMA Ia) - 18° 25'S and 21° 17'S. This study aimed to assess the bioaccumulation of trace-elements (As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, and Zn) in muscle, liver and kidney of franciscana dolphins collected near the Doce River's mouth before (n = 32) and after (n = 19) the tailing mud reached the sea. The Generalized Additive Model (GAM) showed increasing temporal trends of Hg and Zn in muscle and liver after the dam failure, probably related to higher concentrations and bioavailability in the water column and sediments from the Doce River. Declining trends were found for As and Cu muscular and hepatic concentrations and Fe concentrations in kidney due to their lower bioavailability after the disaster, caused by association with tailings mud trapped in the riverbanks and suspended particulate material. Additionally, higher As and Hg concentrations found in the first period of sampling may be due to historical contamination by mining activities. The full extent of the impacts caused by the Fundão dam failure is still unknown. However, due to their rapid increase and remobilization process, toxic effects can be induced in the biota by these elements. Elements' bioaccumulation in this study contributes to the knowledge of franciscana dolphins from FMA Ia. Considering the conservation concern regarding this franciscana population and its scarce knowledge, the impact of this disaster can be alarming for species conservation.
