The Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) phenomenon, characterized by the distress caused by the perception of being excluded or not participating in activities in which peers are involved, is examined in this study. The FoMO Scale, comprising 10 items, is employed to measure the levels of this sentiment. The research aimed to translate, adapt, and validate the Fear of Missing Out Scale for the Brazilian context. To achieve this objective, the study followed two distinct methodological stages: the first pertained to translation and adaptation, while the second encompassed the scale's application, accompanied by an analysis of content and construct validity evidence. In the initial phase, the process involved the translation itself, followed by back-translation and subsequent evaluation by experts and the target audience. Moving on to the second stage, an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was conducted using the Factor software, involving 646 participants aged between 18 and 63 years (M = 32.60; SD = 11.84). The exploratory factor analysis revealed the presence of a single dimension in the scale, in line with the original structure. Furthermore, the study provided two forms of valid evidence for the instrument, considering its novel application in the Brazilian context. The ability to utilize this scale in this scenario opens the door to cross-cultural studies addressing this theme.

The Work Demands and Resources Model advocates the existence of a positive relationship between resources and job crafting, and the mediation of work engagement. This study aimed to understand the relationship between social support at work (work resource) and the fear of missing out at work (emotional state) with the factor increasing job crafting resources, as well as the mediating role of work engagement. The sample consisted of 703 workers from different professions and of both sexes (90.6 % female). The results of the structural equation modeling showed that social support at work, fear of missing out at work, and work engagement were positively related to the job crafting resource increase factor. Work engagement partially mediated the positive relationship between social support at work and fear of missing out at work and the factor increasing job crafting resources. These results offer different theoretical and practical contributions to the field of organizational psychology, allowing for advances in knowledge about the nomological network of relationships between social support at work and fear of being disconnected with job crafting, with engagement as a mediator.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: There is an interrelationship between the concepts of social exclusion, compulsive buying behavior, fear of missing out (FoMO), and narcissism. Nevertheless, the extent to which these concepts mediate or moderate their relationships with each other has not been efficiently investigated. OBJECTIVE: This research aims to investigate how FoMO mediates and narcissism moderates the correlation between social exclusion and compulsive buying behavior. In addition, the research aims to test a conceptual model and highlight the differences that may occur in the conceptual model proposed in two different countries. METHODS: This model was analyzed among 1007 university students (Turkey = 506, Denmark = 501). The study used scales to measure social exclusion, compulsive buying behavior, FoMO, and narcissism. The study employed PROCESS Model 4 to analyze direct and indirect (mediation) effects and PROCESS Model 59 to assess conditional (moderation) effects. Furthermore, the Johnson-Neyman technique was utilized to investigate interaction terms. RESULTS: The findings indicate that those who face social exclusion tend to participate more in compulsive buying, and this connection is partly explained by FoMO. This suggests that individuals who encounter social exclusion may have an increased likelihood of experiencing FoMO, which may subsequently contribute to compulsive buying behavior. Furthermore, the moderating effect of narcissism differed between the Turkey and Danish samples. Specifically, in the Turkey sample, narcissism only modified the connection between social exclusion and FoMO, while in the Danish sample, it impacted both the connection between social exclusion and FoMO and the connection between FoMO and compulsive buying. CONCLUSION: The obtained results show that the regulating role of narcissism is different in Turkey and Denmark within the conceptual model we studied.

The present study examines the evidence of validity and reliability of the Argentine version of the fear of missing out (FoMO) scale in a sample of residents in the Area Metropolitana de Buenos Aires (amba) (Argentina). The scale consists in a single factor that allows us to measure the degree to which people are aware of other people's activities compared with their own experiences. This study involved 416 individuals with ages between 18 and 66 years (M = 28.82) and of different genders (Male = 25 %; Female = 75 %). The confirmatory factor analysis yielded values higher than 0.90 for the ifi, nnfi, and cfi indices and the rmseavalues lower than 0.08, figures considered as adequateadjustment indicators. The internal consistency was evaluated from Cronbach's Alpha and the McDonald's Omega statistic, obtaining acceptable figures (α = 0.77; ω = 0.99). The external validity analysis showed sig-nificant associations with the Rosenberg self-esteemscale, following previous studies

RESUMEN

The present study aimed to observe the impact of self-esteem and FOMO on online trolling, investigating the mediating role of antisocial online content exposure. A total of 300 social media users (27.68 years, SD = 7.15, SE = .41) participated in the study. Data analysis showed statistically significant model-fit indices (CFI = .99, GFI = .98, TLI = .98, RMSEA = .02 | 90% CI .01-.03|, SRMR = .04) to the mediation model: both self-esteem (direct effects: λ = -0.17, p < .01, indirect effects: λ = -.06, p < .05) and FOMO (direct effects: λ = .19, p < .01, indirect effects: λ = .07, p < .01) were related to online trolling, both directly and indirectly, trough antisocial online content exposure. It is possible to conclude that the objective was achieved, highlighting the importance of both personal factors and contextual characteristics of the internet in the perpetuation of online aggression.

RESUMEN

In recent years, the increased use of mobile devices has changed social dynamics. One such change is the rise of phubbing, described as the behavior of ignoring someone in order to pay attention to one's cell phone. The purpose of this research was to validate the Perceived Phubbing Scale (PPS) and examine its relationship with other psychological variables. An Argentine sample was composed of 1608 participants aged between 18 and 65 (M = 45.59; SD 14.03), with 51.6% identifying as female. They were provided with a phubbing scale, along with scales to measure emotional disconnection, fear of missing out (FoMO) and social exclusion, and a sociodemographic questionnaire. The results indicated that the PPS showed an adequate fit to the data, based on a structure of one factor (X2(20) = 259.353, p < 0.001; CFI = 0.958; IFI = 0.958; RMSEA = 0.089) and the internal consistency (α = 0.93), resulting in a nine-item scale. Participants with high or medium levels of phubbing showed a tendency to suffer FoMO or feel socially excluded or socially isolated. We did not find differences in the levels of phubbing related to the participant's age, gender, or socioeconomic level. It is possible to conclude that PPS can be used as a reliable measure to evaluate perceived phubbing in Argentina. Implications of the variables studied are discussed as possible predictors of phubbing and are to be considered in its approach.

RESUMEN

In recent years, the rise of social networks has changed relationships and lifestyles around the world. This has led to the emergence of the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), which consists of the need to constantly check social media and the anguish that comes from feeling a lack of rewarding experiences. The impact derived from the use of technologies in a digital environment has been widely studied in young people but not so much in older adults. The main aim of this study was to analyze FoMO levels in older adults and their relationships with sociodemographic and formative factors. Another aim of this study was to analyze whether the dimensions of emotional intelligence, the different forms of attachment and psychological symptomatology affect the FoMO levels of older adults. A total of 690 older adults from Argentina aged between 60 and 90 years (M = 69.01; SD = 5.48) participated, 54.5% of whom were women, responding using a geolocated online questionnaire. The main results confirmed that older people show FoMO levels similar to other general samples. In addition, results show several predictor variables with respect to FoMO: emotional attention, insecure attachment, depression and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. The implications of the results observed in older adults are discussed.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study's main purpose was to examine the psychometric properties of FoMOs' adaptation among the Indonesian adolescents' population. The second aim was to investigate the concurrent validity of the Indonesian version to provide evidence for the validity. Also, FoMOs' difference level between demographic variance analyses was performed. METHOD: The study involved a cross-sectional online survey design with 638 Indonesian adolescents aged 16-24 (M = 19.08, SD = 14.70). FoMO was measured by a 16-item that has been modified from the original 10-item. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were carried out to study its scores' evidence of structural validity. Besides, to study its scores' evidence of convergent, discriminant, and predictive validity concerning other variables such as stress, anxiety, and depression (Depression and Anxiety Stress Scale-21), and general health condition (General Health Questionnaire Scale-12), correlation analyses were conducted. To study the sensitivity, we assessed the effect of sociodemographic and social media use on the scale's ability to identify the population's risk to the FoMO by conducting analyses of variance. The Cronbach alpha values (α = .93) indicated that internal consistency of the scale was at an adequate level. RESULTS: Exploratory factorial analyses revealed adequate adjustment for the new version of the scale showing the three factorial structures. Confirmatory factor analyses showed that the 12-item of Indonesian FoMO had a good fit (χ2/df = 289.324/51; goodness-of-fit index (GFI) = 0.928; RMSEA = 0.086; comparative fit index (CFI) = 0.915; normed fit index (NFI) = 0.899; parsimony normed fit index (PNFI) = .695; Tucker-Lewis index (TLI) = 0.890). CONCLUSION: This study has shown that the modified 12-item Fear of Missing Out Scale is a valid and reliable instrument for Indonesian adolescents. It showed that the Indonesian version of Fear of Missing Out Scale has adequate psychometric properties to measure Indonesian adolescents' online behavior.

RESUMEN

The current COVID-19 pandemic has had obvious, well-documented devastating effects on people's physical health. In this research, we investigate its potential effects on people's mental health. Many people have experienced social isolation, as countries attempt to stem the spread of the disease through confinement and other forms of social distancing. Intuitively, such social isolation may increase feelings of loneliness, and people may take logical steps to reduce their feelings of social isolation and loneliness. One route is through the use of social networking apps (e.g., Facebook, Instagram) and messaging and VoIP apps (e.g., WhatsApp, iMessage). In this research, we investigate the effects of pandemic-induced social isolation on social networking and messaging apps, and potential related effects on loneliness. We surveyed young adults (N = 334) who are part of the Centennial cohort (born after 1995) from three different countries (Italy, Argentina, UK) and obtained their screen time usage data over a 4-week period starting from mid-March 2020. This sampling procedure allowed us to obtain data from respondents who were experiencing different degrees of mandated social isolation (lockdowns), which enabled us to determine whether social network and messaging app usage increased as a function of social isolation, and to test potential effects on levels of loneliness. Results showed that only social network usage increased in the initial stage of confinement as a function of lockdown initiation. Additionally, social network app usage was associated with increased feelings of loneliness, and this relation was mediated by fear of missing out (FOMO). In contrast, messaging app usage was associated with decreased feelings of loneliness, and was unrelated to FOMO. These results suggest that technology may be useful for mitigating the impact of loneliness during social isolation but that it is necessary to promote usage of messaging and VoIP apps, rather than social networking apps, because they are directly associated with decreases in loneliness without increasing FOMO.

Abstract: The present work aims to explain FoMO, anxiety and social media, identifying categories and related variables through a systematic review of exploratory literature in the respective databases: Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO and Lilacs, using only empirical articles published in Portuguese and English in the last 10 years. It is concluded, based on the databases used in this research, that the personality is understood as a predictor of the engagement and problematic use of social media, in addition, it is verified that the association with the FoMO is direct, since such traits provoke a need of the individuals to remain online and connected, independently of any cost or consequence, generating anxiety.
