RESUMEN

High levels of test anxiety can cause negative emotional interference and have adverse effects in multiple aspects. It is currently unclear whether acute aerobic exercise can effectively reduce a series of negative emotions triggered by test anxiety. This study investigates the impact of 30 min of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on the subjective emotional responses and frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) in individuals with high test anxiety. Forty-four college students with high test anxiety were randomly assigned to an aerobic exercise group and a control group. Each group underwent two tests, involving subjective scale measurements and resting-state EEG recordings, with a seven-day interval between tests. Results showed that after 30 min of moderate-intensity acute aerobic exercise, the intervention group had significantly reduced scores in subjective negative emotional experiences, and FAA indicators significantly increased. The study suggests that acute aerobic exercise can enhance the emotional regulation ability of college students with high test anxiety and reduce their negative emotions.

Introduction: Chondral defect repair is challenging due to a scarcity of reparative cells and the need to fill a large surface area, compounded by the absence of self-healing mechanisms. Fibronectin adhesion assay-derived chondroprogenitors (FAA-CPs) have emerged as a promising alternative with enhanced chondrogenic ability and reduced hypertrophy. De-cellularized bio-scaffolds are reported to act as extracellular matrix, mimicking the structural and functional characteristics of native tissue, thereby facilitating cell attachment and differentiation. This study primarily assessed the synergistic effect of FAA-CPs suspended in fetal cartilage-derived collagen-containing scaffolds in repairing chondral defects. Methodology: The de-cellularized and lyophilized fetal collagen was prepared from the tibio-femoral joint of a 36 + 4-week gestational age fetus. FAA-CPs were isolated from osteoarthritic cartilage samples (n = 3) and characterized. In ex vivo analysis, FAA-CPs at a density of 1 × 106 cells were suspended in the lyophilized scaffold and placed into the chondral defects created in the Osteochondral Units and harvested on the 35th day for histological examination. Results: The lyophilized scaffold of de-cellularized fetal cartilage with FAA-CPs demonstrated effective healing of the critical size chondral defect. This was evidenced by a uniform distribution of cells, a well-organized collagen-fibrillar network, complete filling of the defect with alignment to the surface, and favorable integration with the adjacent cartilage. However, these effects were less pronounced in the plain scaffold control group and no demonstrable repair observed in the empty defect group. Conclusion: This study suggests the synergistic potential of FAA-CPs and collagen scaffold for chondral repair which needs to be further explored for clinical therapy. Engaging in dialog requires interlocutors to coordinate sending and receiving linguistic signals to build a discourse based upon interpretations and perceptions interconnected with a range of emotions. Conversing in a foreign language may induce emotions such as anxiety which influence the quality communication. The neural processes underpinning these interactions are crucial to understanding foreign language anxiety (FLA). Electroencephalography (EEG) studies reveal that anxiety is often displayed via hemispheric frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA). To examine the neural mechanisms underlying FLA, we collected self-reported data on the listening and speaking sections of the Second language skill specific anxiety scale (L2AS) over behavioral, cognitive, and somatic domains and recorded EEG signals during participation in word chain turn-taking activities in first (L1, Chinese) and second (L2, English) languages. Regression analysis showed FAA for the L2 condition was a significant predictor primarily of the behavioral and somatic domains on the L2AS speaking section. The results are discussed along with implications for improving communication during L2 interactions.

A glioma is a type of tumor that acts on the Central Nervous System (CNS) in a highly aggressive manner. Gliomas can occasionally be inaccurately diagnosed and treatments have low efficacy, meaning that patients exhibit a survival of less than one year after diagnosis. Due to factors such as intratumoral cell variability, inefficient chemotherapy drugs, adaptive resistance development to drugs and tumor recurrence after resection, the search continues for new drugs that can inhibit glioma cell growth. As such, analogues of endocannabinoids, such as fatty acid amides (FAAs), represent interesting alternatives for inhibiting tumor growth, since FAAs can modulate several metabolic pathways linked to cancer and, thus, may hold potential for managing glioblastoma. The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro effects of two fatty ethanolamides (FAA1 and FAA2), synthetized via direct amidation from andiroba oil (Carapa guianensis Aublet), on C6 glioma cells. FAA1 and FAA2 reduced C6 cell viability, proliferation and migratory potential in a dose-dependent manner and were not toxic to normal retina glial cells. Both FAAs caused apoptotic cell death through the loss of mitochondrial integrity (ΔΨm), probably by activating cannabinoid receptors, and inhibiting the PI3K/Akt pathway. In conclusion, FAAs derived from natural products may have the potential to treat glioma-type brain cancer.

The current study investigated the effectiveness of social robots in facilitating stress management interventions for university students by evaluating their physiological responses. We collected electroencephalogram (EEG) brain activity and Galvanic Skin Responses (GSRs) together with self-reported questionnaires from two groups of students who practiced a deep breathing exercise either with a social robot or a laptop. From GSR signals, we obtained the change in participants' arousal level throughout the intervention, and from the EEG signals, we extracted the change in their emotional valence using the neurometric of Frontal Alpha Asymmetry (FAA). While subjective perceptions of stress and user experience did not differ significantly between the two groups, the physiological signals revealed differences in their emotional responses as evaluated by the arousal-valence model. The Laptop group tended to show a decrease in arousal level which, in some cases, was accompanied by negative valence indicative of boredom or lack of interest. On the other hand, the Robot group displayed two patterns; some demonstrated a decrease in arousal with positive valence indicative of calmness and relaxation, and others showed an increase in arousal together with positive valence interpreted as excitement. These findings provide interesting insights into the impact of social robots as mental well-being coaches on students' emotions particularly in the presence of the novelty effect. Additionally, they provide evidence for the efficacy of physiological signals as an objective and reliable measure of user experience in HRI settings.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer is one of the global health concerns. A series of studies on the stomach have confirmed the role of the microbiome in shaping gastrointestinal diseases. Delineation of microbiome signatures to distinguish chronic gastritis from gastric cancer will provide a non-invasive preventative and treatment strategy. In this study, we performed whole metagenome shotgun sequencing of fecal samples to enhance the detection of rare bacterial species and increase genome sequence coverage. Additionally, we employed multiple bioinformatics approaches to investigate the potential targets of the microbiome as an indicator of differentiating gastric cancer from chronic gastritis. RESULTS: A total of 65 patients were enrolled, comprising 33 individuals with chronic gastritis and 32 with gastric cancer. Within each group, the chronic gastritis group was sub-grouped into intestinal metaplasia (n = 15) and non-intestinal metaplasia (n = 18); the gastric cancer group, early stage (stages 1 and 2, n = 13) and late stage (stages 3 and 4, n = 19) cancer. No significant differences in alpha and beta diversities were detected among the patient groups. However, in a two-group univariate comparison, higher Fusobacteria abundance was identified in phylum; Fusobacteria presented higher abundance in gastric cancer (LDA scored 4.27, q = 0.041 in LEfSe). Age and sex-adjusted MaAsLin and Random Forest variable of importance (VIMP) analysis in species provided meaningful features; Bacteria_caccae was the most contributing species toward gastric cancer and late-stage cancer (beta:2.43, se:0.891, p:0.008, VIMP score:2.543). In contrast, Bifidobacterium_longum significantly contributed to chronic gastritis (beta:-1.8, se:0.699, p:0.009, VIMP score:1.988). Age, sex, and BMI-adjusted MasAsLin on metabolic pathway analysis showed that GLCMANNANAUT-PWY degradation was higher in gastric cancer and one of the contributing species was Fusobacterium_varium. CONCLUSION: Microbiomes belonging to the pathogenic phylum Fusobacteria and species Bacteroides_caccae and Streptococcus_anginosus can be significant targets for monitoring the progression of gastric cancer. Whereas Bifidobacterium_longum and Lachnospiraceae_bacterium_5_1_63FAA might be protection biomarkers against gastric cancer.

Colorectal cancer (CRC), a major global health concern, may be influenced by dietary protein digestibility impacting gut microbiota and metabolites, which is crucial for cancer therapy effectiveness. This study explored the effects of a casein protein diet (CTL) versus a free amino acid (FAA)-based diet on CRC progression, gut microbiota, and metabolites using carcinogen-induced (AOM/DSS) and spontaneous genetically induced (ApcMin/+ mice) CRC mouse models. Comprehensive approaches including 16s rRNA gene sequencing, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and immunohistochemistry were utilized. We found that the FAA significantly attenuated CRC progression, evidenced by reduced colonic shortening and histopathological alterations compared to the CTL diet. Notably, the FAA enriched beneficial gut bacteria like Akkermansia and Bacteroides and reversed CRC-associated dysbiosis. Metabolomic analysis highlighted an increase in ornithine cycle metabolites and specific fatty acids, such as Docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), in FAA-fed mice. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that FAA up-regulated Egl-9 family hypoxia inducible factor 3 (Egln 3) and downregulated several cancer-associated pathways including Hippo, mTOR, and Wnt signaling. Additionally, DPA was found to significantly induce EGLN 3 expression in CRC cell lines. These results suggest that FAA modulate gut microbial composition, enhance protective metabolites, improve gut barrier functions, and inhibit carcinogenic pathways.

Mother-infant interactions form a strong basis for emotion regulation development in infants. These interactions can be affected by various factors, including maternal postnatal anxiety. Electroencephalography (EEG) hyperscanning allows for simultaneous assessment of mother-infant brain-to-behavior association during stressful events, such as the still-face paradigm (SFP). This study aimed at investigating dyadic interactive behavior and brain-to-behavior association across SFP and identifying neural correlates of mother-infant interactions in the context of maternal postnatal anxiety. We measured frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA), a physiological correlate of emotion regulation and a potential marker of risk for psychopathology. To emulate real-life interactions, EEG and behavioral data were collected from 38 mother-infant dyads during a smartphone-adapted dual-SFP. Although the behavioral data showed a clear still-face effect for the smartphone-adapted SFP, this was not reflected in the infant or maternal FAA. Brain-to-behavior data showed higher infant negative affect being associated with more infant leftward FAA during the still-face episodes. Finally, mothers with higher postnatal anxiety showed more right FAA during the first still-face episode, suggesting negative affectivity and a need to withdraw from the situation. Our results form a baseline for further research assessing the effects of maternal postnatal anxiety on infants' FAA and dyadic interactive behavior.

In this study, the effect of the use of S. platensis, which is presented as an eco-friendly and alternative protein source, in the production of kefir, a probiotic dairy product, on various physicochemical properties as well as FAA, ACE inhibitory activity, proteolysis, TPC, DPPH, ABTS+, and mineral values was investigated. It was observed that the addition of S. platensis at different ratios to the kefir samples had a statistically very significant (p < 0.01) effect on all physicochemical analyses; L. mesenteroides count; all amino acids except isoleucine, aspartic acid, and glutamic acid; ACE inhibitory activity, TN, TCAN, TCAN/TN, mM Gly, TPC, DPPH, ABTS+, Na, Mg, K, and Fe. In plain kefir samples, mineral contents were determined by order of K > P > Na > Ca > Mg > Zn >> Fe > Cr > Cr > Mn. Furthermore, a general increase was observed in FAA, ACE inhibitory activity, TPC, DPPH, ABTS+, and mineral values, as well as in the counts of Lactococcus spp. and L. mesenteroides in the samples, depending on the proportion of S. platensis added, compared to plain kefir samples. In this context, it was concluded that the addition of S. platensis to kefir at different rates could meet various components required by the body on a daily basis and result in a nutraceutical product.

Subjective well-being (SWB) describes how well people experience and evaluate their current condition. Previous studies with electroencephalography (EEG) have shown that SWB can be related to frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA). While those studies only considered a single SWB score for each experimental session, our goal is to investigate such a correlation for individuals with a possibly different SWB every 60 or 30 s. Therefore, we conducted two experiments with 30 participants each. We used different temperature and humidity settings and asked the participants to periodically rate their SWB. We computed the FAA from EEG over different time intervals and associated the given SWB, leading to pairs of (FAA, SWB) values. After correcting the imbalance in the data with the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE), we performed a linear regression and found a positive linear correlation between FAA and SWB. We also studied the best time interval sizes for determining FAA around each SWB score. We found that using an interval of 10 s before recording the SWB score yields the best results.

INTRODUCTION: Although gene-level copy number alterations have been studied as a potential biomarker of immunotherapy efficacy in NSCLC, the impact of aneuploidy burden and chromosomal arm-level events on immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) efficacy in NSCLC is uncertain. METHODS: Patients who received programmed cell death protein 1 or programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) inhibitor at two academic centers were included. Across all 22 chromosomes analyzed, an arm was considered altered if at least 70% of its territory was either gained or deleted. Among nonsquamous NSCLCs which underwent targeted next-generation sequencing, we retrospectively quantified aneuploidy using the adjusted fraction of chromosomal arm alterations (FAA), defined as the number of altered chromosome arms divided by the number of chromosome arms assessed, adjusted for tumor purity. RESULTS: Among 2293 nonsquamous NSCLCs identified, the median FAA increased with more advanced cancer stage and decreased with higher PD-L1 tumor proportion score (TPS) levels (median FAA in TPS < 1%: 0.09, TPS 1%-49%: 0.08, TPS ≥ 50%: 0.05, p < 0.0001). There was a very weak correlation between FAA and tumor mutational burden when taken as continuous variables (R: 0.07, p = 0.0005). A total of 765 advanced nonsquamous NSCLCs with available FAA values were treated with ICIs. With decreasing FAA tertiles, there was a progressive improvement in objective response rate (ORR 15.1% in upper tertile versus 23.2% in middle tertile versus 28.4% in lowest tertile, p = 0.001), median progression-free survival (mPFS 2.5 versus 3.3 versus 4.1 mo, p < 0.0001), and median overall survival (mOS 12.5 versus 13.9 versus 16.4 mo, p = 0.006), respectively. In the arm-level enrichment analysis, chromosome 9p loss (OR = 0.22, Q = 0.0002) and chromosome 1q gain (OR = 0.43, Q = 0.002) were significantly enriched in ICI nonresponders after false discovery rate adjustment. Compared with NSCLCs without chromosome 9p loss (n = 452), those with 9p loss (n = 154) had a lower ORR (28.1% versus 7.8%, p < 0.0001), a shorter mPFS (4.1 versus 2.3 mo, p < 0.0001), and a shorter mOS (18.0 versus 9.6 mo, p < 0.0001) to immunotherapy. In addition, among NSCLCs with high PD-L1 expression (TPS ≥ 50%), chromosome 9p loss was associated with lower ORR (43% versus 6%, p < 0.0001), shorter mPFS (6.4 versus 2.6 mo, p = 0.0006), and shorter mOS (30.2 versus 14.3 mo, p = 0.0008) to immunotherapy compared with NSCLCs without 9p loss. In multivariable analysis, adjusting for key variables including FAA, chromosome 9p loss, but not 1q gain, retained a significant impact on ORR (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.25, p < 0.001), mPFS (HR = 1.49, p = 0.001), and mOS (HR = 1.47, p = 0.003). Multiplexed immunofluorescence and computational deconvolution of RNA sequencing data revealed that tumors with either high FAA levels or chromosome 9p loss had significantly fewer tumor-associated cytotoxic immune cells. CONCLUSIONS: Nonsquamous NSCLCs with high aneuploidy and chromosome 9p loss have a distinct tumor immune microenvironment and less favorable outcomes to ICIs.

This paper describes the use of a commercial Fumasep® FAA3-50 membrane as an anion exchange membrane (AEM) in alkaline direct methanol fuel cells (ADMFCs). The membrane, supplied in bromide form, is first exchanged in chloride and successively in the hydroxide form. Anionic conductivity measurements are carried out in both a KOH aqueous solution and in a KOH/methanol mixture. AEM-DMFC tests are performed by feeding 1 M methanol, with or without 1 M KOH as a supporting electrolyte. A maximum power density of 5.2 mW cm-2 at 60 °C and 33.2 mW cm-2 at 80 °C is reached in KOH-free feeding and in the alkaline mixture, respectively. These values are in good agreement with some results in the literature obtained with similar experimental conditions but with different anion exchange membranes (AEMs). Finally, methanol crossover is investigated and corresponds to a maximum value of 1.45 × 10-8 mol s-1 cm-2 at 50 °C in a 1 M KOH methanol solution, thus indicating that the Fumasep® FAA3-50 membrane in OH form is a good candidate for ADMFC application.

Exact solutions of nonlinear differential equations are of great importance to the theory and practice of complex systems. The main point of this review article is to discuss a specific methodology for obtaining such exact solutions. The methodology is called the SEsM, or the Simple Equations Method. The article begins with a short overview of the literature connected to the methodology for obtaining exact solutions of nonlinear differential equations. This overview includes research on nonlinear waves, research on the methodology of the Inverse Scattering Transform method, and the method of Hirota, as well as some of the nonlinear equations studied by these methods. The overview continues with articles devoted to the phenomena described by the exact solutions of the nonlinear differential equations and articles about mathematical results connected to the methodology for obtaining such exact solutions. Several articles devoted to the numerical study of nonlinear waves are mentioned. Then, the approach to the SEsM is described starting from the Hopf-Cole transformation, the research of Kudryashov on the Method of the Simplest Equation, the approach to the Modified Method of the Simplest Equation, and the development of this methodology towards the SEsM. The description of the algorithm of the SEsM begins with the transformations that convert the nonlinearity of the solved complicated equation into a treatable kind of nonlinearity. Next, we discuss the use of composite functions in the steps of the algorithms. Special attention is given to the role of the simple equation in the SEsM. The connection of the methodology with other methods for obtaining exact multisoliton solutions of nonlinear differential equations is discussed. These methods are the Inverse Scattering Transform method and the Hirota method. Numerous examples of the application of the SEsM for obtaining exact solutions of nonlinear differential equations are demonstrated. One of the examples is connected to the exact solution of an equation that occurs in the SIR model of epidemic spreading. The solution of this equation can be used for modeling epidemic waves, for example, COVID-19 epidemic waves. Other examples of the application of the SEsM methodology are connected to the use of the differential equation of Bernoulli and Riccati as simple equations for obtaining exact solutions of more complicated nonlinear differential equations. The SEsM leads to a definition of a specific special function through a simple equation containing polynomial nonlinearities. The special function contains specific cases of numerous well-known functions such as the trigonometric and hyperbolic functions and the elliptic functions of Jacobi, Weierstrass, etc. Among the examples are the solutions of the differential equations of Fisher, equation of Burgers-Huxley, generalized equation of Camassa-Holm, generalized equation of Swift-Hohenberg, generalized Rayleigh equation, etc. Finally, we discuss the connection between the SEsM and the other methods for obtaining exact solutions of nonintegrable nonlinear differential equations. We present a conjecture about the relationship of the SEsM with these methods.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Occurring in marine invertebrates infectious haemic neoplasia (bivalves transmissible neoplasia, BTN) arises from genome instabilities leading to multilevel malfunctions and unregulated cell division of presumably haemocyte precursors. As its biochemical characterisation remains unknown, we here present the first data describing selected aspects of the physiology and biochemistry of the disease a in model clam Macoma balthica. We chose free amino acids (FAA) composition, mitochondrial respiration and enzymatic activity, oxidative stress enzymes activities and corticosteroids profile as markers of this contagious cancer. METHODS: Selected markers were measured in neoplastic and healthy clams and two tissue types, haemolymph and solid tissue. FAA composition was assessed in the haemolymph samples using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC/MS). Mitochondrial respiration analysis was performed on haemocytes using oxygen electrodes integrated system Seahorse XFp. Mitochondrial enzymes activities were measured using spectrophotometry (cytochrome oxidase, COX) and commercial kit (succinate dehydrogenase, SDH). Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC), Acetylocholinesterase (AChE), Protein Carbonyl Content (CBO) and Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were measured in the solid tissue using analytical kits, and glutathione (GSH) was measured spectrophotometrically. Corticosteroids profile, measured in the solid tissue, was obtained with Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Ionization-Mass Spectrometry (HPLC-ESI-MS/MS) technique. RESULTS: In both clam groups nine FAAs were detected with Asp, Glu, Pro, Ser constituting over 90% of total FAA content. Significantly higher Gln level was detected in BTN positive clams. In neoplastic clams, an impairment of mitochondrial metabolism was observed as a decrease in mitochondrial oxygen consumption and lower cytochrome c oxidase activity. In the neoplastic clams significantly higher concentration of low molecular weight antioxidants was found. Finally, we report high level of corticosterone and lower levels of dehydrocorticosterone, cortisol and cortisone in healthy clams and elevated cortisol level in BTN individuals. CONCLUSION: Neoplastic clams are characterized by altered mitochondrial metabolism, with a potential key role of glutamine (Gln) in cancer cells energy production. Despite low aerobic respiration, BTN cells have efficient antioxidative response to elevated concentration of ROS. Elevated cortisol level in BTN-positive clams may indicate an important role of this corticosteroid in cancer biochemistry. Thus, we here provide the first results of selected physiological and biochemical aspects of BTN, making an important step in studying cancer epidemiology in wildlife.

The ability to tell time relative to predictable feeding opportunities has a long history of research, going back more than 100 years with behavioral observations of honeybees and rats. Animals that have access to food at a particular time of day exhibit "food anticipatory activity" (FAA), which is a preprandial increase in activity and arousal thought to be driven by food entrained circadian oscillator(s). However, the mechanisms behind adaptation of behavior to timed feeding continue to elude our grasp. Methods used to study circadian entrainment by food vary depending on the model system and the laboratory conducting the experiments. Most studies have relied on rodent model systems due to neuroanatomical tools and genetic tractability, but even among studies of laboratory mice, methods vary considerably. A lack of consistency within the field in experimental design, reporting, and definition of food entrainment, or even FAA, makes it difficult to compare results across studies or even within the same mutant mouse strain, hindering interpretation of replication studies. Here we examine the conditions used to study food as a time cue and make recommendations for study design and reporting.

The COVID-19 pandemic has greatly changed workplace management. Most workplaces have adopted the work-from-home policy to minimize the risk of community spread. Consequently, housing estates remain largely occupied during office hours. Since some housing estates are situated in the vicinity of an airport, noise pollution resulted from the takeoff and landing of aircraft is now more noticed by residents, causing annoyance. This problem would be most acute for those located directly under the flight path. Before the pandemic, such aircraft operations had lower effect on the residents because most of them were not at home but at workplaces. Evidently, it is timely that more emphasis should now be placed during urban planning to predict and minimize aircraft noise in the built environment. This article first defines the aircraft noise metrics commonly used to assess environmental impact. Preceded by an overview of how aircraft noise affects the built environment, this article reviews how various aircraft noise prediction models have been used in urban planning. Lastly, this article reviews how aircraft noise can be managed for better acoustic comfort of the residents. Anticipating the adoption of hybrid work arrangement moving forward, this article aims to provide urban planning professionals with an avenue to understand how aircraft noise can negatively affect the built environment, which, in turn, justify why prediction and management of aircraft noise should be emphasized from the outset of urban planning.

BACKGROUND: In the COVID-19 epidemic more patients presented with persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD), but it has received little attention by the doctors in China and many patients reject psychological measurements or scales. Therefore, there is an urgent need for an objective method to diagnose and evaluate PPPD. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of the COVID-19 epidemic on elderly PPPD patients and define the relationship between prefrontal alpha rhythm asymmetry (FAA) by Electroencephalography (EEG) and PPPD. METHODS: This case-control study was conducted to discuss the differences of elderly outpatients (>60 years) with PPPD during the peak period of COVID-19 in 2020 and the corresponding period in 2019, and collect the prefrontal FAA value in PPPD during COVID-19 outbreak, which were compared to its FAA in healthy control. RESULTS: Compared with the same period in 2019, the number of elderly PPPD patients during the epidemic period in 2020 increased significantly (16.4%, p = 0.000, x2 =31.802) . The left alpha wave signal power (F3) was significantly higher than the right alpha wave signal power (F4) (Z= -3.073, p = 0.002). In PPPD patients FAA were significantly lower in patients compared to control group (Z = -11.535, p = 0.000). There was a negative correlation between FAA and HAMA scores (R2 =0.906, p < 0.05) and a negative correlation between FAA and HAMD scores (R2 =0.859, p < 0.05), too. CONCLUSIONS: The increase in cases of elderly PPPD patients is most likely attributed to the mental health in older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic. Less left frontal brain activity in EEG may be related to elderly PPPD.

Inequitable urban environments are associated with toxic stress and altered neural social stress processing that threatens the development of self-regulation. Some children in these environments struggle with early onset externalizing problems that are associated with a variety of negative long-term outcomes. While previous research has linked parenting daily hassles to child externalizing problems, the role of frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) as a potential modifier of this relationship has scarcely been explored. The present study examined mother-child dyads, most of whom were living in low socioeconomic status households in an urban environment and self-identified as members of racial minority groups. Analyses focused on frustration task electroencephalography (EEG) data from 67 children (mean age = 59.0 months, SD = 2.6). Mothers reported the frequency of their daily parenting hassles and their child's externalizing problems. Frustration task FAA moderated the relationship between parenting daily hassles and child externalizing problems, but resting FAA did not. More specifically, children with left frontal asymmetry had more externalizing problems as their mothers perceived more hassles in their parenting role, but parenting hassles and externalizing problems were not associated among children with right frontal asymmetry. These findings lend support to the motivational direction hypothesis and capability model of FAA. More generally, this study reveals how individual differences in lateralization of cortical activity in response to a stressor may confer differential susceptibility to child behavioral problems with approach motivation (i.e., left frontal asymmetry) predicting externalizing problems under conditions of parental stress.

BACKGROUND: Finding the baseline resting-state EEG markers for early identification of cognitive decline can contribute to the identification of individuals at risk of further change. Potential applications include identifying participants for clinical trials, early treatment, and evaluation of treatment, accessible even from a community setting. METHODS: Analyses were completed on a sample of 99 (ages 60-90) consensus-diagnosed, community-dwelling African Americans (58 cognitively typical/HC, and 41 mildly cognitively impaired/MCI), who were recruited from the Michigan Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (MADRC) and the Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology. In addition to neuropsychological testing with CogState and Toolbox computerized batteries, resting-state EEGs (rsEEG, eyes closed) were acquired before and after participants were engaged in a visual motion direction discrimination task. rsEEG frontal alpha asymmetry (FAA) and frontal beta asymmetry (FBA) were calculated. RESULTS: FAA showed no difference across groups for the pre-task resting state. FBA was significantly different between groups, with more asymmetric frontal beta in MCI. Both physiological indices, however, along with computerized neuropsychological tests were significant predictors in logistic regression classification of MCI vs. control participants. CONCLUSION: rsEEG asymmetries can contribute significantly to successful discrimination of older persons with MCI from those without, over and above cognitive testing, alone.

Staphylococcus simulans and Lactobacillus plantarum screened from Guizhou specialty food were used to prepare fermented pork loin ham. The sensory qualities and flavor profiles of fermented pork loin hams from 0 to 42 days were investigated in order to reveal the dynamics of fermented pork loin ham. The results show that total free amino acids (TFAA) content reached the highest value on the 35th day, and the umami amino acids, including aspartic acid (ASP), glutamic acid (GLU), glycine (GLY), and alanine (ALA), were the main amino acids in all periods. Notably, the RV coefficient (0.875) indicates that free amino acids (FAA) are highly correlated with the sensory score of the E-tongue. In terms of the volatile compounds identified, the esters content gradually increased between 7 and 42 days, and ethyl octanoate was the most abundant compound during all periods. These esters imparted a characteristic aroma component to the fermented pork loin ham. The most important finding was that the increase in the content of esters represented by octanoic acid-ethyl ester might be related to the increase in the content of FAA with the increase in fermentation time. Both the E-nose and E-tongue showed good discrimination ability for fermented tenderloin ham with different fermentation times, which was crucial in cases with large clusters. In addition, the multiple factor analysis (MFA) indicated that the E-nose aroma value might be the key factor in distinguishing fermented pork loin ham with different fermentation times.
