RESUMEN

Plastic particle occurrence in the digestive tracts of fishes from a tropical estuarine system in the Gulf of California was investigated. A total of 1095 fish were analysed, representing 15 species. In total 1384 particles of plastic debris were recovered from the gastrointestinal tracts of 552 specimens belonging to 13 species, and all consisted of threads, the majority of which were small microplastics (0.23 to 1.89), followed by large microplastics (2.07 to 4.49), and few mesoplastics (5.4 to 19.86). Plastic particles were identified using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy. The mean frequency of occurrence of plastics in the gastrointestinal tracts of fishes from this system was 50.5%, which is higher than frequencies reported in similar systems in other areas. The polymers identified by ATR-FTIR were polyamide (51.2%), polyethylene (36.6%), polypropylene (7.3%), and polyacrylic (4.9%). These results show the first evidence of plastic contamination for estuarine biota in the Gulf of California.

RESUMEN

During drier periods estuarine salinization can stimulate the colonization of marine organisms and further bioinvasion, therefore, may cause future ecological change. In this sense, we applied the Rapid Assessment Surveys (RAS) on natural and artificial hard substrates during the most intense drought period (between 2014 and 2016) since 1950, in a tropical estuary in Eastern Brazil. Through the estuary salinization the ascidian Didemnum psammatodes overgrow the dominant native taxa; this dominance taxa shift provided suitable habitat favorable for invasion of Ophiothela mirabilis across the estuary. Even the invasion starts on artificial substrates, the higher resilience of natural substrates were not enough to enable the establishment of invasive species. This baseline is the first evidence of bioinvasion influenced by climate change drought periods in tropical estuaries in South America, which is a great advance for the development of management strategies to mitigate this and future climate change scenarios.

RESUMEN

Temporarily open-closed estuaries and estuarine lagoons are among the most complex aquatic ecosystems, prone to undergo rapid changes in response to global change and other anthropogenic impacts. Nonetheless, studies on the factors that control annual cycles of phytoplanktonic biomass and primary production in such systems, especially tropical ones, are still scarce. Even less information exists on the effect increasingly frequent extreme climatic events (ECE) might have on their dynamics. For this purpose, we monitored the changes in ecological conditions in the Los Micos estuarine lagoon (Honduras) by sampling monthly during an annual cycle that included several changes in the lagoon's mouth phase and attempted to understand which environmental factors affect phytoplanktonic biomass and primary production. We also evaluated the impact of, and recovery from, a tropical storm ECE. Annual mean net production (Pn), integrated for the euphotic zone, (4.3 ± 2.8 gC m-2 d-1) and Chlorophyll a (27.1 ± 19.1 mg m-3) values in Los Micos place it as one of the more productive estuaries worldwide. The physico-chemical characteristics of the lagoon clearly depended on mouth phase; however, the values of Chla and Pn did not show significant differences between the open and closed phases. The application of distance-based multivariate linear models did not show any clear dominant model being able to explain the observed Chla and Pn patterns. The most parsimonious models included among others, salinity, particulate organic carbon and PO43-, which suggests that primary production is controlled by multiple factors. During the ECE, about 19% of DIN, 91% of DSi and PO43-, 60% of particulate organic carbon and nitrogen, and 86% of Chla were exported to the sea, greatly reducing Pn. However, Chla and Pn values recovered to pre-storm levels within 30 days, indicating that these biological variables are highly resilient in Los Micos Lagoon.

RESUMEN

Spatial and temporal density and biomass of the infaunal mollusk Anomalocardia flexuosa (Linnaeus, 1767) evaluated a tidal plain at Goiana estuary (Northeast Brazil). Three hundred and sixty core samples were taken during an annual cycle from three intertidal habitats (A, B and C). Shell ranged from 2.20 to 28.48 mm (15.08 ± 4.08 mm). Recruitment occurred more intensely from January to March. Total (0-1,129 g m-2) differed seasons (rainy and dry), with highest values in the early rainy season (221.0 ± 231.44 g m-2); and lowest values in the late dry season (57.34 ± 97 g m-2). The lowest occurred during the late rainy (319 ± 259 ind m-2) and early dry (496 ± 607 ind m-2) seasons. Extreme environmental situations (e.g., river flow, salinity and water temperature) at the end of each season also affected density ranges (late dry: 0-5,798 ind m-2; late rainy: 0-1,170 ind m-2). A. flexuosa in the Goiana estuary presented a dominance of juvenile individuals (shell length < 20 mm), with high biomass main the recruitment period. Average shell length, density and biomass values suggest overfishing of the stock unit. A. flexuosa is an important food and income resource along its whole distribution range. The species was previously also known as Anomalocardia brasiliana (Gmelin, 1791).

RESUMEN

Abstract The present study shows spatial patterns in the faunal assemblage of decaying wood and sediments, with emphasis on the polychaetes. The survey was executed across a salinity gradient in a tropical mangrove estuary of Costa Rica. To capture the organisms we analyzed decomposing logs found in the Térraba mangrove and sediment samples were taken with a corer in the sand bottom. Seven different phyla were found in the sediment samples. Of the 192 individuals found in the sediment samples, 18 were polychaetes belonging to nine families and 11 species. Analyses of decaying wood resulted in 2 564 individuals distributed in five phyla. Polychaetes accounted for 429 individuals belonging to eight families and 16 species. Although, polychaetes were more abundant in decaying wood, and their diversity was lower. The abundance of polychaetes in decaying wood was negatively correlated with the number of individuals of Mollusca, Hexapoda and Crustacea. A change in the composition of polychaetes in decaying wood was found along the salinity gradient of this estuarine zone. Dissimilarities in the composition of benthic fauna in decaying wood and sediments in the Térraba mangrove showed that biodiversity was increased by the microhabitats inside the mangrove forest. Finally, several genera or species of polychaetes are new records for Costa Rica and the Central American Pacific Coast. Rev. Biol. Trop. 63 (Suppl. 1): 61-74. Epub 2015 April 01.
