Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is characterized by important extrapulmonary alterations that could affect the performance in dual task (DT) (motor and cognitive tasks executed simultaneously), which is defined as DT interference (DTI). Objective: To compare the performance of DT between individuals with COPD and healthy control subjects (HCSs). Methods: The literature search was conducted in seven databases (Medline, Scopus, Web of Science, PEDro, SciELO, LILACS, and Google Scholar) up to December 2023, including studies published in English, Spanish, or Portuguese. Studies with individuals diagnosed with COPD older than 60 years, who were evaluated with any DT assessment, and compared with HCS were included. The quality of the studies was evaluated using the risk of bias in nonrandomized studies of interventions (ROBINS-I). The meta-analysis was performed with JAMOVI software 5.4. The study protocol was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42023435212). Results: From a total of 128 articles, 5 observational studies were selected in this review, involving 252 individuals aged between 60 and 80 years, from France, Italy, Canada, Turkey, and Belgium. Notable DTI was observed in individuals with COPD compared to HCS (standard mean difference [SMD] = 0.91; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.06-1.75, p = 0.04). Individuals with COPD had impaired gait speed, balance control, muscle strength, and cognitive interference during DT compared to HCS. DT assessment protocols included different combination of motor and cognitive tasks, using functional test, gait analysis, and muscle strength paired with countdown and verbal fluency tasks. Studies presented low (n = 2), moderate (n = 1), and serious (n = 2) overall risk of bias. Conclusion: Older adults diagnosed with COPD exhibited a significant DTI compared to HCSs, which is characterized by poorer physical and cognitive performance during DT execution. These findings highlight the importance of incorporating DT assessments into clinical practice for individuals with COPD.

In this study, we examined whether experience level and various dual motor and cognitive or single tasks influenced young soccer players' physical performance during small-sided games. Participants were 72 players from U-13 (n = 36) and U-17 (n = 36) groups who participated in 3-to-a-side small-sided games under four experimental conditions: control, a secondary motor task, an additional related secondary cognitive task, and an additional secondary non-specific task. We used GPS devices to measure physical performance in terms of distances covered and accelerations at different thresholds. We found no significant interaction effect between player experience and task condition (p = .540), meaning that dual tasks had comparable effects on players of different experience levels. There were significant main effects of both experience level (p < .001) and condition (p < .001) on most physically related variables. Older players outperformed younger ones, particularly in high-intensity actions. While secondary motor tasks decreased physical performance, secondary cognitive tasks, irrespective of specificity, did not impair players' performances. In conclusion, experience level did not influence the players' physical response to dual tasks, and a secondary motor task was more disruptive to physical performance than either of two types of secondary cognitive tasks. Cognitive tasks can be incorporated into soccer training without compromising physical performance.

BACKGROUND: Beam walking is a new test to estimate dynamic balance. We characterized dynamic balance measured by the distance walked on beams of different widths in five age groups of healthy adults (20, 30, 40, 50, 60 years) and individuals with neurological conditions (i.e., Parkinson, multiple sclerosis, stroke, age: 66.9 years) and determined if beam walking distance predicted prospective falls over 12 months. METHODS: Individuals with (n = 97) and without neurological conditions (n = 99, healthy adults, age 20-60) participated in this prospective longitudinal study. Falls analyses over 12 months were conducted. The summed distance walked under single (walking only) and dual-task conditions (walking and serial subtraction by 7 between 300 to 900) on three beams (4, 8, and 12-cm wide) was used in the analyses. Additional functional tests comprised grip strength and the Short Physical Performance Battery. RESULTS: Beam walking distance was unaffected on the 12-cm-wide beam in the healthy adult groups. The distance walked on the 8-cm-wide beam decreased by 0.34 m in the 20-year-old group. This reduction was ~ 3 × greater, 1.1 m, in the 60-year-old group. In patients, beam walking distances decreased sharply by 0.8 m on the 8 versus 12 cm beam and by additional 1.6 m on the 4 versus 8 cm beam. Beam walking distance under single and dual-task conditions was linearly but weakly associated with age (R2 = 0.21 for single task, R2 = 0.27 for dual-task). Age, disease, and beam width affected distance walked on the beam. Beam walking distance predicted future falls in the combined population of healthy adults and patients with neurological conditions. Based on receiver operating characteristic curve analyses using data from the entire study population, walking ~ 8.0 of the 12 m maximum on low-lying beams predicted future fallers with reasonable accuracy. CONCLUSION: Balance beam walking is a new but worthwhile measure of dynamic balance to predict falls in the combined population of healthy adults and patients with neurological conditions. Future studies are needed to evaluate the predictive capability of beam walking separately in more homogenous populations. Clinical Trial Registration Number NCT03532984.

Extensive practice can significantly reduce dual-task costs (i.e., impaired performance under dual-task conditions compared with single-task conditions) and, thus, improve dual-task performance. Among others, these practice effects are attributed to an optimization of executive function skills that are necessary for coordinating tasks that overlap in time. In detail, this optimization of dual-task coordination skills is associated with the efficient instantiation of component task information in working memory at the onset of a dual-task trial. In the present paper, we review empirical findings on three critical predictions of this memory hypothesis. These predictions concern (1) the preconditions for the acquisition and transfer of coordination skills due to practice, (2) the role of task complexity and difficulty, and (3) the impact of age-related decline in working memory capacity on dual-task optimization.

When the performance of two tasks overlaps in time, performance impairments in one or both tasks are common. Various theoretical explanations for how component tasks are controlled in dual-task situations have been advanced. However, less attention has been paid to the issue of how two temporally overlapping tasks are appropriately coordinated in terms of their order. The current study focuses on two specific aspects of this task-order coordination: (1) the potential effects of practice on task-order coordination performance and (2) its relationships with cognitive meta-control mechanisms that adjust this coordination. These aspects were investigated in a visual-auditory dual-task combination with randomly changing task orders across trials after four sessions of dual-task practice (N = 24) and single-task practice (N = 24). The results demonstrated that task-order coordination improves during dual-task practice, and in contrast to the effects of single-task practice. Practice, on the other hand, did not show substantial evidence of an effect on the adjustment of task-order coordination. This practice-related dissociation is consistent with the assumption that (1) task-order coordination and (2) its sequential adjustment are separable sets of processes.

Words judged for relevance in a survival situation are remembered better than words judged for relevance in a nonsurvival context. This survival processing effect has been explained by selective tuning of human memory during evolution to process and retain information specifically relevant for survival. According to the richness-of-encoding hypothesis the survival processing effect arises from a domain-general mechanism-namely, a particularly rich and distinct form of encoding. This form of information processing is effortful and requires limited cognitive capacities. In our experiment, we used the well-established psychological refractory period framework in conjunction with the effect propagation logic to assess the role of central cognitive resources for the survival processing effect. Our data demonstrate that the survival memory advantage indeed relies on the capacity-limited central stage of cognitive processing. Thus, rating words in the context of a survival scenario involves central processing resources to a greater amount than rating words in a nonsurvival control condition. We discuss implications for theories of the survival processing effect.

When two tasks are presented simultaneously or in close succession, such as in the overlapping task paradigm of the psychological refractory period, dual-task performance on those tasks is usually impaired compared with separate single-task performance. Numerous theories explain these emerging dual-task costs in terms of the existence of capacity limitations in the constituent component tasks. The current paper proposes active dual-task coordination processes that work on the scheduling of these capacity-limited processes. Further, there are recent findings that point to a meta-cognitive control level in addition to these active coordination processes. This additional level's responsibility is to adjust the dual-task coordination of capacity-limited stages (i.e., coordination adjustment). I review evidence focusing on the existence of dual-task coordination processes and processes of coordination adjustment. The remainder of the paper elaborates on preliminary findings and points to the separability of these sets of processes, which is a key assumption of the framework of dual-task coordination adjustment.

BACKGROUND: Various neurocognitive tests have shown that cycling enhances cognitive performance compared to resting. Event-related potentials (ERPs) elicited by an oddball or flanker task have clarified the impact of dual-task cycling on perception and attention. In this study, we investigate the effect of cycling on cognitive recruitment during tasks that involve not only stimulus identification but also semantic processing and memory retention. METHODS: We recruited 24 healthy young adults (12 males, 12 females; mean age = 22.71, SD = 1.97 years) to perform three neurocognitive tasks (namely color-word matching, arithmetic calculation, and spatial working memory) at rest and while cycling, employing a within-subject design with rest/cycling counterbalancing. RESULTS: The reaction time on the spatial working memory task was faster while cycling than at rest at a level approaching statistical significance. The commission error percentage on the color-word matching task was significantly lower at rest than while cycling. Dual-task cycling while responding to neurocognitive tests elicited the following results: (a) a greater ERP P1 amplitude, delayed P3a latency, less negative N4, and less positivity in the late slow wave (LSW) during color-word matching; (b) a greater P1 amplitude during memory encoding and smaller posterior negativity during memory retention on the spatial working memory task; and (c) a smaller P3 amplitude, followed by a more negative N4 and less LSW positivity during arithmetic calculation. CONCLUSION: The encoding of color-word and spatial information while cycling may have resulted in compensatory visual processing and attention allocation to cope with the additional cycling task load. The dual-task cycling and cognitive performance reduced the demands of semantic processing for color-word matching and the cognitive load associated with temporarily suspending spatial information. While dual-tasking may have required enhanced semantic processing to initiate mental arithmetic, a compensatory decrement was noted during arithmetic calculation. These significant neurocognitive findings demonstrate the effect of cycling on semantic-demand and memory retention-demand tasks.

Cognitive-motor interactions in speech production have a strong theoretical basis. However, majority of the existing literature has primarily focused on subjective and objective measures related to speech and not voice. This systematic review gathered evidence on the potential relationship between cognitive load and voice production. A search of five databases, website, citation review, and author search were completed in a sequential order to find published and unpublished literature from 1992 to 2022 using a combination of search terms including voice, cognitive load/demand/effort/flexibility, dual task, and speech production/motor. Studies for which the primary dependent variables were linguistic, or speech measures were included if voice acoustics was also measured and described. A final sample of nine articles were identified as meeting inclusion criteria: completed between 1992 and 2022, healthy adults (18+), and American English speakers. The review indicated that existing literature on the influence of cognitive load on voice production is limited. Acoustic measures, such as fundamental frequency, sound pressure level, and cepstral peak prominence, do not show consistent patterns of change with an increase in cognitive load. It is likely that the inconsistencies in the speech or cognitive task type and measurement of individual reaction to cognitive load changes may have led to these varied results. Further research using a range/continuum of cognitive tasks varying in load/difficulty level and physiological measurements is warranted to understand the underlying mechanisms of behavioral performance with implications for clinical voice assessment and rehabilitation.

BACKGROUNDS: Gait disorder is associated with cognitive functional impairment, and this disturbance is more pronouncedly when performing additional cognitive tasks. Our study aimed to characterize gait disorders in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) under three dual tasks and determine the association between gait performance and cognitive function. METHODS: A total of 260 participants were enrolled in this cross-sectional study and divided into MCI and cognitively normal control. Spatiotemporal and kinematic gait parameters (31 items) in single task and three dual tasks (serial 100-7, naming animals and words recall) were measured using a wearable sensor. Baseline characteristics of the two groups were balanced using propensity score matching. Important gait features were filtered using random forest method and LASSO regression and further described using logistic analysis. RESULTS: After matching, 106 participants with MCI and 106 normal controls were recruited. Top 5 gait features in random forest and 4 ~ 6 important features in LASSO regression were selected. Robust variables associating with cognitive function were temporal gait parameters. Participants with MCI exhibited decreased swing time and terminal swing, increased mid stance and variability of stride length compared with normal control. Subjects walked slower when performing an extra dual cognitive task. In the three dual tasks, words recall test exhibited more pronounced impact on gait regularity, velocity, and dual task cost than the other two cognitive tests. CONCLUSION: Gait assessment under dual task conditions, particularly in words recall test, using portable sensors could be useful as a complementary strategy for early detection of MCI.

BACKGROUND: Real-world mobility involves walking in challenging conditions. Assessing gait during simultaneous physical and cognitive challenges provides insights on cognitive health. RESEARCH QUESTION: How does uneven surface, cognitive task, and their combination affect gait quality and does this gait performance relate to cognitive functioning? METHODS: Community-dwelling older adults (N = 104, age=75 ± 6 years, 60 % females) performed dual-task walking paradigms (even and uneven surface; with and without alphabeting cognitive task (ABC)) to mimic real-world demands. Gait quality measures [speed(m/s), rhythmicity(steps/minute), stride time variability (%), adaptability (m/s2), similarity, smoothness, power (Hz) and regularity] were calculated from an accelerometer worn on the lower back. Linear-mixed modelling and Tukey analysis were used to analyze independent effects of surface and cognitive task and their interaction on gait quality. Partial Spearman correlations compared gait quality with global cognition and executive function. RESULTS: No interaction effects between surface and cognitive task were found. Uneven surface reduced gait speed(m/s) (ß = -0.07). Adjusted for speed, uneven surface reduced gait smoothness (ß = -0.27) and increased regularity (ß = 0.09), Tukey p < .05, for even vs uneven and even-ABC vs uneven-ABC. Cognitive task reduced gait speed(m/s) (ß = -0.12). Adjusted for speed, cognitive task increased variability (ß = 7.60), reduced rhythmicity (ß = -6.68) and increased regularity (ß = 0.05), Tukey p < .05, for even vs even-ABC and uneven vs uneven-ABC. With demographics as covariates, gait speed was not associated with cognition. Gait quality [lower variability during even-ABC (ρp =-.31) and uneven-ABC (ρp =-.28); greater rhythmicity (ρp between.22 and.29) and greater signal-adaptability AP (ρp between.22 and.26) during all walking tasks] was associated with better global cognition. Gait adaptability during even (ρp =-0.21, p = 0.03) and uneven(ρp =-0.19, p = 0.04) walking was associated with executive function. SIGNIFICANCE: Surface and cognitive walking tasks independently affected gait quality. Our study with high-functioning older adults suggests that task-related changes in gait quality are related to subtle changes in cognitive functioning.

Perceptual-cognitive tasks play a pivotal role in performing voluntary movements, which is crucial for good performances among soccer players. This study explored the effect of perceptual-cognitive tasks on the inter-joint coordination of soccer players and college students during landing. The classic multiple objective tracking (MOT) task was used to simulate the perceptual-cognitive task under a sports environment. Fifteen soccer players (age: 20.1 ± 1.5 year, height: 181.4 ± 7.4 cm, weight: 75.4 ± 10.7 kg) and twenty ordinary college students (age: 20.0 ± 2.3 years, height: 177.9 ± 4.9 cm, weight: 71.6 ± 9.9 kg) were enrolled to the study. Participants in the two groups were subjected to a single task (landing task) and dual-task (MOT task and landing task). Coordination and variability indicators were recorded using a Vicon infrared motion capture system and a force measuring platform. The results showed that the mean absolute relative phase of hip and knee joint (MARPhip-knee), deviation phase of hip and knee joint (DPhip-knee), and deviation phase of knee and ankle joint (DPknee-ankle) of the two groups under the dual-task were significantly different compared with the parameters when participants were subjected to the single task. The dual-task had higher effect size on DPhip-Knee and MARPhip-knee, indicating that dual-task had a greater impact on coordination of the hip and knee joints. DPhip-knee and DPknee-ankle of ordinary students were more extensive relative to those of the soccer players, and hip joint stiffness (K hip) for ordinary students was lower than that of the soccer players under the different tasks. These findings implied that the perceptual-cognitive task markedly affected the inter-joint coordination of soccer players and college students, mainly by impairing the hip and knee coordination. Although there is less variability in lower extremity coordination patterns of soccer players compared to college students, the MOT task still affects their coordination ability.

BACKGROUND: Children with Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD-C) have motor coordination deficits which lead to difficulties in sports and play activities that require adaptations of the walking pattern. Sports and play often involve performing dual tasks, which affects performance in DCD-C more than in typically developing children (TD-C). So far, testing the impact of dual tasking on walking adaptability in DCD-C has received little scientific attention. RESEARCH QUESTION: We tested the hypothesis that 6-12 year old DCD-C will show lower levels of walking adaptability than TD-C, and that due to problems with automatization this difference will increase when they are forced to divide their attention between tasks when a concurrent visuo-motor or cognitive task is added. METHODS: Twenty-six DCD-C and sixty-nine TD-C were included in this cross-sectional study. They performed a challenging walking adaptability (WA) task on a treadmill as a single, a visuo-motor dual and a cognitive dual task at a pace of 3.5 km/h. Repeated measures ANCOVAs were performed with condition (single/dual task) as within-subjects factor, group (TD/DCD) as between-subjects factor, and age as covariate. RESULTS: DCD-C performed poorer on the WA task than TD-C. The group differences increased when a concurrent visuo-motor task was added, but not when adding a concurrent cognitive task. A significant effect of age was found with younger children performing worse on all tasks. SIGNIFICANCE: The results highlight the problems DCD-C have with walking adaptability and dual tasks, which capacities are essential for full participation in sports and play activities. Future research should investigate whether DCD-C may benefit from task-specific walking adaptability training.

This article aimed to systematically review the published results of studies of psychophysiological mechanisms of posture maintenance and identify the key factors that influence the effectiveness of postural control. The recommendations of "Preferred Reporting Elements for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes" (PRISMA) were followed for the review. The results were classified, taking into account the target psychophysiological mechanisms and factors affecting postural control. The article presents the theoretical and empirical results of the Russian scientific school of research on the role of support afferentation in the sensorimotor mechanisms of cognitive and postural functions. Due to the limited number of randomized studies found, it was impossible to make meta-analytic comparisons, so the literature analysis was carried out only qualitatively. Meanwhile, our systematic review provides promising information about possible relationships between stabilometric and psychological indicators of postural control, which have theoretical significance and application in the correction and training of posture control. However, more thorough research is needed to overcome the methodological shortcomings that we have encountered in our qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dual-tasking procedures often involve the successive presentation of two different stimuli, requiring participants to execute two tasks in a particular order. Performance in both tasks suffers if the order of the tasks is reversed (i.e., switched) compared to the directly preceding trial. This task-order switch cost is reduced, however, if the preceding trial itself involved a task-order switch compared to a task-order repetition (Strobach in Acta Psychol 217:103328, 2021). Theoretical accounts range from assumptions of top-down implementation of a task-order control set, or passive persistence thereof, to priming based on episodic binding of tasks and temporal positions. Here, we tested these accounts by investigating whether the sequential modulation decays as a function of the inter-trial interval. METHODS AND RESULTS: Task-order switch costs were reliably reduced after a task-order switch (compared to after a task-order repetition) and this reduction did not decrease over inter-trial intervals ranging from 350 ms to 1,400 ms. Also replicating previous findings, for reaction times the reduction was driven by selective slowing in task-order repeat trials, suggesting increased response caution. CONCLUSIONS: Our results are consistent with preparatory processes of task-order control or with episodic integration of task-order information but argue against accounts assuming short-lived, decaying task-order sets.

BACKGROUND: Age-related changes negatively affect physical fitness, body composition, and executive function and produce a decrease in regucalcin level expression in blood. The square-stepping exercise (SSE) is a balance and lower-limb strength training programme used to prevent falls and stimulate cognitive function in older adults. This project aims to analyse the effects of SSE on executive function, regucalcin expression, fall prevention, body composition, and physical fitness in people over 65 years old. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial will be conducted. A total of 90 older people over 65 years old will be recruited and randomly assigned to 2 groups: experimental (n = 45) and control (n = 45). The experimental group will perform an SSE-based intervention for 6 months (2 times per week), while the control group do not follow any treatment. RESULTS: The main outcome will be balance, but other motor (body mass index, upper- and lower-limb strength, flexibility, and speed-agility) and cognitive variables (executive functions and attention) will be assessed. The expression of regucalcin levels will also be evaluated. Therefore, this project aims to analyse the effect of a 6-month SSE intervention on cognitive and motor competence, physical fitness, regucalcin levels, fall risk, and body composition in older people. If the intervention proves to be effective, it could be implemented in centres, entities, and associations specialized in elderly care.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify how different dual tasks influence speech performance among young Malay speakers by manipulating the complexity of sentences. Fifteen female speakers (20-30 years old) were audio recorded while executing a series of simple and complex sentence repetition tasks. METHODS: Hierarchical linear modeling was conducted to examine the effects of task (speech task only, speech + cognitive tasks, speech + linguistic tasks, and speech + manual tasks) and sentence complexity (simple vs. complex), as well as their interaction on 3 outcome measures (word accuracy rate [WAR], response reaction time [RRT], and duration of sentence [DoS]). RESULTS: Significantly higher WAR were found when participants read the sentences only compared to when they completed another task simultaneously. The pairwise comparison further revealed that the conditions of speech + manual tasks produced the lowest WAR. For RRT, participants responded significantly faster when they only read the sentences (mean = 1.36, SE = 0.17) than when they read the sentences and conducted another task at the same time (mean = 1.66, SE = 0.14; p < 0.0001). A pairwise comparison showed that the conditions of speech + manual tasks produced the longest DoS. Neither the effect of sentence complexity nor the interaction between task and sentence complexity was statistically significant across WAR, RRT, and DoS. CONCLUSIONS: The results augment what is known about interference between speech and other concurrent tasks and provides evidence that divided attention affects manual task performance more than other tasks. In addition, sentence complexity did not affect speech performance in healthy adults. This paradigm could be used in future studies to serve as a clinical marker that can potentially distinguish mild cognitive impairment from normal aging.

BACKGROUND: Performing dual-tasks is often required for completing activities of daily living. Limited research investigated the effects of dual-tasking on gait in people with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of cognitive tasks on gait in people with TBI Methods: Seven individuals with TBI and nine controls completed walking under three conditions; usual walking, walking with questions and answers, and walking with word generation while 3D motion analysis system captured gait. RESULTS: Significant group x condition interactions were found in which TBI group showed greater changes in speed (p < .01), cadence (p = .07), and ankle kinematics (p = .03) as cognitive task became more complex from usual walking to walking with word generation. TBI group decreased speed (p = .02), stride length (p = .01), and hip kinematics (p = .03) as concurrent task became more complex. The control showed decreases in speed (p = .01), stride length (p = .01), and joint kinematics in the hip (p = .03) and knee (p = .01) as the complexity of concurrent cognitive task increased. CONCLUSION: People with TBI have greater difficulty walking with a cognitive task and show greater compromises in gait performance as the task complexity increases when compared to those without TBI. Clinicians should consider the use of progression in cognitive tasks for dual-task gait training.

Dual-tasks (e.g., making horizontal eye-movements) while recollecting a memory are often used both in the lab and the clinic (such as in EMDR therapy) to attenuate emotional memories and intrusive mental images. According to working memory theory, dual-task interventions are effective because they limit cognitive resources available for the processing of emotional memories. However, there is still ongoing debate about the extent to which and under what conditions dual-task interventions are effective to interfere with emotional memories. In this meta-analysis, we assessed k = 53 laboratory studies investigating the effects of dual-task interventions on negative and positive memories. The effects were measured with the raw mean reduction in vividness and emotionality self-report ratings of emotional memories before compared to after the intervention on 100-point rating scales. Results showed that the dual-task interventions made both negative and positive memories less vivid (mean reduction negative images = 9.18, 95% CI [7.06, 11.29]; mean reduction positive images = 11.73, 95% CI [8.59, 14.86]) and less emotional (mean reduction negative images = 6.22, 95% CI [4.50, 7.94]; mean reduction positive images = 6.71, 95% CI [2.21, 11.20]). Several moderators were tested and are discussed in the light of working memory theory.

Older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) have a high risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Gait performance is a potential clinical marker for the progression of MCI into dementia. However, the relationship between gait and brain functional connectivity (FC) in older adults with MCI remains unclear. Forty-five subjects [MCI group, n = 23; healthy control (HC) group, n = 22] were recruited. Each subject performed a walking task (Task 01), counting backward-walking task (Task 02), naming animals-walking task (Task 03), and calculating-walking task (Task 04). The gait parameters and cerebral oxygenation signals from the left prefrontal cortex (LPFC), right prefrontal cortex (RPFC), left motor cortex (LMC), right motor cortex (RMC), left occipital leaf cortex (LOL), and right occipital leaf cortex (ROL) were obtained simultaneously. Wavelet phase coherence was calculated in two frequency intervals: low frequency (interval I, 0.052-0.145 Hz) and very low frequency (interval II, 0.021-0.052 Hz). Results showed that the FC of RPFC-RMC is significantly lower in interval I in Task 03 compared with that in Task 02 in the MCI group (p = 0.001). Also, the right relative symmetry index (IDpsR) is significantly lower in Task 03 compared with that in Task 02 (p = 0.000). The IDpsR is positively correlated with the FC of RPFC-RMC in interval I in the MCI group (R = 0.205, p = 0.041). The gait symmetry such as left relative symmetry index (IDpsL) and IDpsR is significantly lower in the dual-task (DT) situation compared with the single task in the two groups (p < 0.05). The results suggested that the IDpsR might reflect abnormal change in FC of RPFC-RMC in interval I in the MCI population during Task 03. The gait symmetry is affected by DTs in both groups. The findings of this study may have a pivotal role in the early monitoring and intervention of brain dysfunction among older adults with MCI.
