RESUMEN

A key component of stress management and biofeedback training is the use of relaxation exercises, such as slow/deep breathing (6 breaths/minute) in heart coherence exercises (HCEs). Breathing exercises are also increasingly being integrated into smartphones as part of health apps, though their effectiveness in adolescents after acute stress has rarely been validated scientifically. The aim of the current study was to investigate the effectiveness of an app-guided HCE (n = 36) after an acute stress situation (Trier Social Stress Test) compared with natural relaxation (n = 37), among healthy adolescents (aged 11-17 years). Endocrine, autonomic, and psychological stress parameters (cortisol, alpha-amylase, heart rate, heart rate variability, mood) were examined in 73 adolescents (46 female, 27 male; Mage = 13.86, SDage = 1.87). Significant group differences were found in heart rate variability, with higher values in the low frequency band and low-to-high frequency ratio for the HCE condition, possibly indicating improved physiological functions through the stimulation of vagal tone and baroreflex. The use of a general breathing technique (natural and app-guided) also resulted in stronger relaxation reactions in cortisol when controlling for the previous stronger stress reactivity. On the other hand, app-guided slow breathing without a long training may be experienced as more uncomfortable during relaxation. The integration of breathing exercises in health apps for adolescents appears to be useful, offering a helpful and low-threshold coping/relaxation strategy during acute stress situations. Further studies should examine the benefits of app-guided breathing exercises in both psychiatric samples and the general population across a wide age range.

RESUMEN

This review explores standardized clinical assessments for evaluating autonomic nervous system function. Here, we emphasize components of the autonomic medical history as the first pivotal test of the autonomic assessment. We further focus on standard noninvasive cardiovascular autonomic tests including heart rate responses to deep breathing, Valsalva maneuvers, and orthostatic challenges, along with insights from neurochemical tests and quantitative sudomotor axon reflex testing. The article also covers practical aspects of cardiovascular autonomic monitoring, including patient set-up using beat-to-beat blood pressure and ECG, specific assessment protocols, and their respective clinical interpretations that provide insight into adrenergic, cardiovagal, and sudomotor function.

Slow and deep breathing (SDB) is a relaxation technique that can increase vagal activity. Respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) serves as an index of vagal function usually quantified by the high-frequency power of heart rate variability (HRV). However, the low breathing rate during SDB results in deviations when estimating RSA by HRV. Besides, the impact of the inspiration-expiration (I: E) ratio and guidelines ways (fixed breathing rate or intelligent guidance) on SDB is not yet clear. In our study, 30 healthy people (mean age = 26.5 years, 17 females) participated in three SDB modes, including 6 breaths per minute (bpm) with an I:E ratio of 1:1/ 1:2, and intelligent guidance mode (I:E ratio of 1:2 with guiding to gradually lower breathing rate to 6 bpm). Parameters derived from HRV, multimodal coupling analysis (MMCA), Poincaré plot, and detrended fluctuation analysis were introduced to examine the effects of SDB exercises. Besides, multiple machine learning methods were applied to classify breathing patterns (spontaneous breathing vs. SDB) after feature selection by max-relevance and min-redundancy. All vagal-activity markers, especially MMCA-derived RSA, statistically increased during SDB. Among all SDB modes, breathing at 6 bpm with a 1:1 I:E ratio activated the vagal function the most statistically, while the intelligent guidance mode had more indicators that still significantly increased after training, including SDRR and MMCA-derived RSA, etc. About the classification of breathing patterns, the Naive Bayes classifier has the highest accuracy (92.2%) with input features including LFn, CPercent, pNN50, [Formula: see text], SDRatio, [Formula: see text], and LF. Our study proposed a system that can be applied to medical devices for automatic SDB identification and real-time feedback on the training effect. We demonstrated that breathing at 6 bpm with an I:E ratio of 1:1 performed best during the training phase, while intelligent guidance mode had a more long-lasting effect.

Background: Depression has been expected to be the second-leading cause of disability, followed by autism, attention and hyperactivity disorder, and learning disorder. Yoga therapy has found to be beneficial in managing psychiatric disorders. Aim: The present study undertakes a scoping review of research on yoga therapy in psychiatric disorders among children and adolescents. Methods: Online database was used to identify papers published 2004-2023, from which we selected 11 publications from the United States, Canada, Iran, India, and Australia that used yoga therapy as a primary outcome variable among participants aged 3 years or older. Results: The papers reviewed were randomized controlled trials. All studies examined yoga therapy, but one study used mindfulness-based therapy and used few techniques of yoga therapy. The studies examined the effect of yoga therapy on early childhood and adolescence on various psychiatric symptoms such as stress, inattention, hyperactivity, anxiety, depression, and many more. Conclusion: While the quality of studies is generally high, research on yoga therapy among children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders would benefit from careful selection of methods and reference standards, suitability for yoga therapy, and prospective cohort studies linking early childhood exposures with yoga therapy outcomes throughout childhood and adolescence.

Introduction: Information about autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity may offer insights about atrial fibrillation (AF) progression and support personalized AF treatment but is not easily accessible from the ECG. In this study, we propose a new approach for ECG-based assessment of respiratory modulation in atrioventricular (AV) nodal refractory period and conduction delay. Methods: A 1-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) was trained to estimate respiratory modulation of AV nodal conduction properties from 1-minute segments of RR series, respiration signals, and atrial fibrillatory rates (AFR) using synthetic data that replicates clinical ECG-derived data. The synthetic data were generated using a network model of the AV node and 4 million unique model parameter sets. The 1D-CNN was then used to analyze respiratory modulation in clinical deep breathing test data of 28 patients in AF, where an ECG-derived respiration signal was extracted using a novel approach based on periodic component analysis. Results: We demonstrated using synthetic data that the 1D-CNN can estimate the respiratory modulation from RR series alone with a Pearson sample correlation of r = 0.805 and that the addition of either respiration signal (r = 0.830), AFR (r = 0.837), or both (r = 0.855) improves the estimation. Discussion: Initial results from analysis of ECG data suggest that our proposed estimate of respiration-induced autonomic modulation, a resp, is reproducible and sufficiently sensitive to monitor changes and detect individual differences. However, further studies are needed to verify the reproducibility, sensitivity, and clinical significance of a resp.

Fear of needles is a common phenomenon that can affect the patient's ability to function and to seek medical help. Novel treatment practices are needed to help children cope with this fear. Based on user feedback, immersive virtual reality applications are effective when distracting the patient during a painful procedure. Better understanding of how virtual reality solutions affect the autonomic nervous system should be acquired. We present the case of a 12-year-old boy attending our study examining a novel virtual reality (VR) relaxation method (VirNE). The clinical study aims to determine if pain and anxiety can be relieved by relaxation that has been induced by a virtual natural environment and guided relaxation exercise-mediated autonomic nervous system stimulation. The patient was able to overcome his fear of needles with the help of the guided relaxation and found significant relief from the distress he was experiencing on his monthly visits to the hospital due to his long-term illness requiring repetitious intravenous cannulations.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic nervous system (ANS) testing has aided in our ability to evaluate autonomic dysfunction in migraine patients. We reviewed the literature in multiple databases which investigate ANS function in migraine patients and healthy subjects. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the respective deep breathing, Valsalva manoeuvre, orthostatic and isometric challenge results, using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and Meta-analyses of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) statements. RESULTS: Seven articles met all inclusion criteria. Fixed-effects meta-analysis showed migraine patients (n = 424), collectively, had lower interictal autonomic test results compared with healthy controls (n = 268). In detail, this was true for the standardized mean difference (g) of deep breathing (g= -0.32; 95% confidence interval (CI) -0.48, -0.16), orthostatic challenge (g= -0.28; 95% CI -0.44, -0.13) and isometric challenge (g= -0.55; 95% CI -0.71, -0.39) and for the difference of means (MD) of the Valsalva ratio (MD = -0.17; 95% CI -0.23, -0.10). CONCLUSIONS: Interictal ANS dysfunction can be identified in migraine patients when compared to healthy controls. These findings indicate the importance to evaluate ANS function in migraine patients - especially, as migraine-specific prophylactic therapies (such as anti-calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) antibodies) may affect the function of the ANS.

In this educational landscape, the pervasive issue of stress among higher secondary students has emerged as a serious matter. Acknowledging the challenges posed by educational stress, this research explores holistic and accessible interventions, with a focus on the promising avenue of deep breathing exercises known for their effectiveness in promoting relaxation and reducing stress. The study employs a quasi-experimental design, comparing an experimental group engaged in daily deep breathing exercises with a control group following a regular routine. Sixty higher secondary students in Visnagar participate through purposive sampling, adhering to specific inclusion criteria. The intervention includes a pre-tested questionnaire to assess stress levels, the implementation of daily deep breathing exercises in the experimental group, and a post-intervention stress level reassessment in both groups. The findings reveal a notable reduction in stress levels post-intervention, particularly in the experimental group practicing deep breathing exercises. Statistically significant reductions in mean stress scores underscore the effectiveness of this intervention, with the experimental group demonstrating a significantly lower mean stress score compared to the control group. This study contributes vital insights into stress management strategies for higher secondary students, highlighting the efficacy of incorporating deep breathing exercises into their routine. The observed reductions in stress levels emphasize the potential benefits of practical stress reduction techniques within the educational milieu.

OBJECTIVES: Numerous studies indicate that deep breathing (DB) enhances wellbeing. Multiple deep breathing methods exist, but few employ audio to reach similar results. This study developed audio-guided DB and evaluated its immediate impacts on healthy population via self-created auditory Go/No-Go task, tidal volume changes, and psychological measures. METHODS: Audio-guided DB with natural sounds to guide the DB was developed. Meanwhile, audio-based Go/No-Go paradigm with Arduino was built to measure the attention level. Thirty-two healthy young adults (n=32) were recruited. Psychological questionnaires (Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), Cognitive and Affective Mindfulness Scale-Revised (CAMS-R), Perceived Stress Scale (PSS)), objective measurements with tidal volume and attention level with auditory Go/No-Go task were conducted before and after 5 min of DB. RESULTS: Results showed a significant increment in tidal volume and task reaction time from baseline (p=0.003 and p=0.033, respectively). Significant correlations were acquired between (1) task accuracy with commission error (r=-0.905), (2) CAMS-R with task accuracy (r=-0.425), commission error (r=0.53), omission error (r=0.395) and PSS (r=-0.477), and (3) RSES with task reaction time (r=-0.47), task accuracy (r=-0.362), PSS (r=-0.552) and CAMS-R (r=0.591). CONCLUSIONS: This pilot study suggests a link between it and young adults' wellbeing and proposes auditory Go/No-Go task for assessing attention across various groups while maintaining physical and mental wellness.

Breathing techniques, particularly slow-paced breathing (SPB), have gained popularity among athletes due to their potential to enhance performance by increasing cardiac vagal activity (CVA), which in turn can help manage stress and regulate emotions. However, it is still unclear whether the frequency of SPB affects its effectiveness in increasing CVA. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of a brief SPB intervention (i.e., 5 min) on CVA using heart rate variability (HRV) measurement as an index. A total of 75 athletes (22 female; Mage = 22.32; age range = 19-31) participated in the study, attending one lab session where they performed six breathing exercises, including SPB at different frequencies (5 cycles per minute (cpm), 5.5 cpm, 6 cpm, 6.5 cpm, 7 cpm), and a control condition of spontaneous breathing. The study found that CVA was significantly higher in all SPB conditions compared to the control condition, as indexed by both root mean square of the successive differences (RMSSD) and low-frequency HRV (LF-HRVms2). Interestingly, LF-HRVms2 was more sensitive in differentiating the respiratory frequencies than RMSSD. These results suggest that SPB at a range of 5 cpm to 7 cpm can be an effective method to increase CVA and potentially improve stress management and emotion regulation in athletes. This short SPB exercise can be a simple yet useful tool for athletes to use during competitive scenarios and short breaks in competitions. Overall, these findings highlight the potential benefits of incorporating SPB into athletes' training and competition routines.

Treatment anxiety is a serious problem among child patients. A few studies have addressed this issue with virtual reality solutions, with promising results; however, the applications used have generally been designed for entertainment instead of this purpose. This article studies the potential of using deep breathing exercises in a virtual natural environment to address this issue, with a focus on design approach and user experience. It presents the VirNE-Virtual Natural Environments relaxation application, which is based on known stress-reduction methods, and a feasibility study conducted with it in a local hospital. The study had a within-subjects design, and it included 21 eight to twelve-year-old child patients, who used the application during an intravenous cannulation procedure related to their treatment. The study found good user acceptance and user experience both among the child patients and pediatricians, with the perceived usefulness of the method being higher among the patients with increased levels of anxiety or needle phobia. In addition, a clear stress-reducing effect was found. This offers proof-of-concept for the multidisciplinary design approach based on existing scientific knowledge regarding the desired effect for pediatric virtual reality applications for this use context.

There exists a need for new methods to address treatment anxiety in pediatrics-at the same time, deep breathing exercises and virtual natural environments have both been known to have stress-reducing qualities. This article reports the combined effect of these two methods in a pediatric setting. A feasibility study was conducted in a local hospital. The study had a within-subjects design, and it included 21 child patients aged 8 to 12 years old, who used a virtual reality (VR) relaxation application developed for this purpose during an intravenous cannulation procedure related to their treatment. The key findings highlight a statistically very significant stress reduction associated with the utilized VR intervention, demonstrated by heart rate variability measurements (SDNN, p < 0.001; RMSSD, p = 0.002; Stress Index, p < 0.001; LF/HF ratio, p = 0.010). This effect was consistent regardless of the level of general anxiety or the level of needle phobia of the patient, and no adverse effects were observed. The results show the strong potential of using deep breathing exercises in virtual natural environments for addressing treatment anxiety related to invasive pediatric procedures.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between pulmonary function and cardiac autonomic function parameters in clinically stable myasthenia gravis (MG) patients. A total of 22 MG patients and 22 healthy controls (HCs) were evaluated. Pulmonary function test parameters, heart rate variability (HRV), baroreflex sensitivity (BRS), and cardiovascular autonomic function test parameters (the Valsalva ratio, expiration/inspiration (E/I) ratio) were assessed. Compared with the HCs, the patients demonstrated a similar diffusion capacity for carbon monoxide (DLCO); a lower forced vital capacity (FVC%pred); a lower forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1%pred); lower BRS and HRV, including high-frequency and total power spectral density; and a higher percentage of abnormal cardiovagal function test results (p < 0.05). A lower BRS in the patient group was associated with worse clinical disease outcomes and reduced pulmonary function (DLCO%pred, R = 0.59; TLC%pred, R = 0.48). Age, forced vital capacity, and total lung capacity predicted the E/I ratio (R2 values ranging from 0.48 to 0.49). Our study demonstrated a significant relationship between a reduced pulmonary ventilation function and respiratory mechanics with cardiovascular autonomic parameters, including the E/I ratio, BRS, and HRV measures at rest, as shown in the MG group. Future studies should focus on the interplay between respiratory and autonomic function testing, as well as pulmonary rehabilitation, to mitigate cardiovascular risk in these patients.

BACKGROUND: Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is the most common injury in youth sports, which leads to psychological stress from doubting their performance. Cost effective and easy to access tool to reduce the stress among this target group are desired. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of adding on intervention with short-duration deep breathing (SDDB) alongside with conventional physiotherapy (CP) among young adults with chronic ankle instability (CAI). METHODS: Total of 30 CAI participants attended physiotherapy, who were randomly assigned into control and experimental groups. The participants in the experimental group received combined intervention (SDDB + CP), and the control group received CP for 6 weeks. The effectiveness of interventions was assessed at 3 intervals with a battery of questionnaires (Visual Analog Score, Cumberland Ankle Instability Tool, Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, and Oxford Happiness Questionnaire) at the end of week 3, week 6, and week 12 as follow-up. A two-way repeated measures of ANOVA was applied to report the statistical significance at p < 0.05. RESULTS: The results showed a better improvement in pain, balance, happiness, and mindfulness attention among participants in the experimental group, with a significant improvement in mindful attention over the time point as compared to the control group. CONCLUSION: The findings provide insight into incorporating SDDB additions to the existing CP for better CAI management. Breathing techniques that improve attention and happiness play a vital role in CAI, which recommends the biopsychosocial approach in chronic injury rehabilitation. TRIAL REGISTRATION: Current Controlled Trials using Clinical Trials Registry under ID number NCT04812158 retrospectively registered on 23/03/2021.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of pranayama and deep breathing exercises on fatigue and sleep quality in women undergoing radiation therapy for breast cancer. SAMPLE & SETTING: This randomized controlled study was conducted on the outpatient radiation oncology unit of a hospital with 20 patients each in pranayama, deep breathing, and standard care groups (N = 60). METHODS & VARIABLES: The Piper Fatigue Scale and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were used to evaluate the participants' fatigue and sleep quality. RESULTS: The control group showed a significant increase in fatigue levels at the end of radiation therapy compared to the beginning. Sleep quality was improved only in the pranayama group. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: Pranayama can be learned easily, can be performed anywhere, and does not require any equipment, making it a convenient exercise for patients. Oncology nurses can take the lead in suggesting pranayama for symptom management.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine whether changes in the pleth variability index (PVi) during preoxygenation with forced ventilation for 1 min could predict anesthesia-induced hypotension. DESIGN: Prospective, observational study. SETTING: A tertiary teaching hospital. PATIENTS: Ninety-six patients who underwent general anesthesia using total intravenous anesthesia were enrolled. INTERVENTIONS: Upon the patient's arrival at the preoperative waiting area, a PVi sensor was affixed to their fourth fingertip. For preoxygenation, forced ventilation of 8 breaths/min in a 1:2 inspiratory-expiratory ratio was conducted using the guidance of an audio file. One minute after preoxygenation, anesthetic administration was initiated. Blood pressure was measured for the next 15 min. MEASUREMENTS: We calculated the difference (dPVi) and percentage of change (%PVi) between the PVi values immediately before and after forced ventilation. Anesthesia-induced hypotension was defined as a mean arterial pressure of <60 mmHg within 15 min after the infusion of anesthetics. MAIN RESULTS: Overall, 87 patients were included in the final analysis. Anesthesia-induced hypotension occurred in 31 (35.6%) of the 87 patients. Receiver operating characteristic curve analyses identified a cut-off value of -2 for dPVi, with an area under the curve of 0.691 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.564-0.818; P < 0.001) and a cut-off value of -7.6% for %PVi, with an area under the curve of 0.711 (95% CI, 0.589-0.832; P < 0.001). Further, multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that a low %PVi with an odds ratio of 9.856 (95% CI, 3.131-31.032; P < 0.001) was a significant determinant of anesthesia-induced hypotension. CONCLUSIONS: Hypotension frequently occurs during general anesthesia induction and can impact outcomes. Additionally, the percentage change in the PVi before and after preoxygenation using deep breathing can be used to predict anesthesia-induced hypotension.

OBJECTIVES: Malaria is still one of the main reasons for hospitalization in children living in sub-Saharan Africa. Rapid risk stratification at admission is essential for optimal medical care and improved prognosis. Whereas coma, deep breathing, and, to a lesser degree, severe anemia are established predictors of malaria-related death, the value of assessing prostration for risk stratification is less certain. METHODS: Here we used a retrospective multi-center analysis comprising over 33,000 hospitalized children from four large studies, including two observational studies from the Severe Malaria in African Children network, a randomized controlled treatment study, and the phase-3-clinical RTS,S-malaria vaccine trial, to evaluate known risk factors of mortality and with a specific emphasis on the role of prostration. RESULTS: Despite comparable age profiles of the participants, we found significant inter- and intra-study variation in the incidence of fatal malaria as well as in the derived risk ratios associated with the four risk factors: coma, deep breathing, anemia, and prostration. Despite pronounced variations, prostration was significantly associated with an increased risk of mortality (P <0.001) and its consideration resulted in improved predictive performance, both in a multivariate model and a univariate model based on the Lambaréné Organ Dysfunction Score. CONCLUSION: Prostration is an important clinical criterion to determine severe pediatric malaria with possible fatal outcomes.

PURPOSE: The deep breathing test (DBT) is a sensitive test of cardiovagal function. The aim of this study was to explore associations between physical activity and sedentary time, measured by accelerometer, and autonomic function, using DBT. METHODS: In the Swedish Cardio-Pulmonary bioImage Study, men and women aged 50-64 were randomly invited from the general population. A total of 4325 subjects who underwent DBT and assessment of physical activity and sedentary time by accelerometery were included. ECG files from 1-min DBT were used to calculate measures of respiratory sinus arrhythmia [RSA; expiration-inspiration (E-I) difference and E/I ratio], heart rate variability [HRV; root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD), standard deviation of heart rates and mean circular resultant]. Low RSA and HRV was defined as the lowest 10% in the population. RESULTS: For accelerometer-assessed physical activity, there were significant associations between high percentage of sedentary time and low E/I (p < 0.01), and low RMSSD (p < 0.01) in an age- and sex-adjusted model, and between percentage of sedentary time and low RMSSD (p = 0.04) in a risk factor-adjusted model. Low RMSSD was less common in those with a high percentage of moderate to vigorous physical activity (p = 0.04, after risk-factor adjustment). These associations became non-significant when further adjusting for heart rate. CONCLUSION: We report associations between degree of physical activity and indices of autonomic dysfunction in a large population. The relationships were no longer significant after adjustments for heart rate, indicating that the relationship between physical activity and cardiovagal function partly is accounted for by reduced heart rate.

Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback (HRVB) has been widely used to improve cardiovascular health and well-being. HRVB is based on breathing at an individual's resonance frequency, which stimulates respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) and the baroreflex. There is, however, no methodological consensus on how to apply HRVB, while details about the protocol used are often not well reported. Thus, the objectives of this systematic review are to describe the different HRVB protocols and detect methodological concerns. PsycINFO, CINALH, Medline and Web of Science were searched between 2000 and April 2021. Data extraction and quality assessment were based on PRISMA guidelines. A total of 143 studies were finally included from any scientific field and any type of sample. Three protocols for HRVB were found: (i) "Optimal RF" (n = 37), each participant breathes at their previously detected RF; (ii) "Individual RF" (n = 48), each participant follows a biofeedback device that shows the optimal breathing rate based on cardiovascular data in real time, and (iii) "Preset-pace RF" (n = 51), all participants breathe at the same rate rate, usually 6 breaths/minute. In addition, we found several methodological differences for applying HRVB in terms of number of weeks, duration of breathing or combination of laboratory and home sessions. Remarkably, almost 2/3 of the studies did not report enough information to replicate the HRVB protocol in terms of breathing duration, inhalation/exhalation ratio, breathing control or body position. Methodological guidelines and a checklist are proposed to enhance the methodological quality of future HRVB studies and increase the information reported.

Pain affects every fifth adult worldwide and is a significant health problem. From a physiological perspective, pain is a protective reaction that restricts physical functions and causes responses in physiological systems. These responses are accessible for evaluation via recorded biosignals and can be favorably used as feedback in active pain therapy via auricular vagus nerve stimulation (aVNS). The aim of this study is to assess the significance of diverse parameters of biosignals with respect to their deflection from cold stressor to deep breathing and their suitability for use as biofeedback in aVNS stimulator. Seventy-eight volunteers participated in two cold pressors and one deep breathing test. Three targeted physiological parameters (RR interval of electrocardiogram, cardiac deflection magnitude Z AC of ear impedance signal, and cardiac deflection magnitude PPG AC of finger photoplethysmogram) and two reference parameters (systolic and diastolic blood pressures BP S and BP D) were derived and monitored. The results show that the cold water decreases the medians of targeted parameters (by 5.6, 9.3%, and 8.0% of RR, Z AC, and PPG AC, respectively) and increases the medians of reference parameters (by 7.1% and 6.1% of BP S and BP D, respectively), with opposite changes in deep breathing. Increasing pain level from relatively mild to moderate/strong with cold stressor varies the medians of targeted and reference parameters in the range from 0.5% to 6.0% (e.g., 2.9% for RR, Z AC and 6.0% for BP D). The physiological footprints of painful cold stressor and relaxing deep breathing were shown for auricular and non-auricular biosignals. The investigated targeted parameters can be used as biofeedback to close the loop in aVNS to personalize the pain therapy and increase its compliance.
