RESUMEN

Contaminant leaching from asphalt pavements poses a significant environmental concern, potentially damaging soil and groundwater quality. The growing interest in incorporating recycled materials in asphalt pavements has further raised concerns over the potential environmental hazards due to contaminant leaching. Consequently, this paper offers a comprehensive review of the literature over the past three decades structured into six sections: groundwater contamination via leaching, methodologies for evaluating leaching, analysis of contaminants, contaminants and leaching from road materials incorporating recycled waste, other factors affecting leaching of pollutants from asphalt pavements, and mathematical models to predict leaching from asphalt pavements. Despite the importance of addressing leaching issues, there is a lack of standardised leaching tests and guidelines specific to asphalt materials, limited attention to evaluating contaminants beyond heavy metals and PAHs in asphalt leachates, insufficient understanding of optimal instrument parameters for asphalt leachate analysis, and a scarcity of mathematical models to predict future leaching potential.

The burgeoning interest in resource recovery from old dumpsites has significantly propelled the adoption of Landfill Mining (LFM) in recent years. This study is centred around evaluating the quality of materials recovered from the full-scale LFM activities at two major dumpsites in India, focusing on the valorization potential of the segregated legacy waste. A detailed analysis was conducted on the segregated waste fractions based on particle size (-30 mm, 30 to 6 mm, and -6 mm, as sourced from the sites), employing both batch and column leaching methods across a range of liquid-to-solid (L/S) ratios (0.1-10.0 L/kg). The findings reveal a pronounced concentration of contaminants within the -6 mm fraction compared to the 30 to 6 mm and -30 mm fractions. Column leaching tests revealed a reduction in contaminant concentration, correlating with incremental changes in L/S ratio. Notably, this trend remained consistent across varying particle sizes and specific type of contaminants assessed. Notably, color intensity of leachate reduced significantly from 720 to 1640 Platinum Cobalt Units (PCU) at an L/S ratio of 0.1 L/kg to a minimal 94-225 PCU at an L/S of 10 L/kg. Dissolved salts emerged as a primary concern, marking them as significant contaminants in both leaching methods. The analysis confirmed that the segregated fractions comply with the USEPA Waste Acceptance Criteria (WAC), permitting their disposal in non-hazardous waste landfills. However, the elevated presence of dissolved salts, exceeding reuse limits by 5-35 times, limits their open or unrestricted reuse. Despite this, isolated reuse aligns with regulations from the Netherlands and Germany, suggesting viable pathways for compliant utilization. Geotechnical assessments indicate the potential for repurposing the -30 mm fraction as alternative earthfill and construction material. While heavy metal leaching does not pose significant concerns, the prevalent unscientific disposal practices near urban settlements highlight potential human health risks. This investigation enriches the understanding of the physicochemical properties, leaching behaviour, and reuse potential of segregated legacy waste, offering crucial insights for civic authorities in determining appropriate reuse and disposal strategies for such materials.

Dehydration with a plate and frame filter press is a common method for treating dredged silt from rivers and lakes. The silt is often conditioned by the addition of solidifying materials before plate and frame press filtration and, therefore, is subjected to the coupling effect of solidification and consolidation. In this study, consolidation tests of the silt with cement were carried out and compared with the silt after only solidification or only consolidation in terms of moisture content, unconfined compressive strength, and leaching concentration. The test results showed that the moisture content of the silt can be reduced to less than 60% under the coupling action of solidification and consolidation, which was 22% and 4% lower than with solidification only or consolidation only, respectively. The effect of consolidation improved the solidification process; the unconfined compressive strength increased rapidly in the early stage of curing and was 30-150% higher than that of solidified silt. The coupling effects of solidification and consolidation on the leaching concentrations of Ni and Cr in silt were the most significant, and the lowest leaching concentrations were 60% and 90% lower than those of solidified only and consolidated only silt, respectively.

In recent years, the pavement industry has been seeking sustainable development through recycling reclaimed asphalt pavement and reusing other waste materials as replacements for asphalt mixture constituents. Incorporating waste material into asphalt mixture and the presence of pollutants such as exhaust fumes and gasoline due to vehicle traffic may lead to contaminants leaching from asphalt pavements to underlying soil layers and groundwater aquifers, posing serious risks to ecosystems and the environment. To cast light on contaminant leaching from asphalt pavements, this article presents a comprehensive review of the literature that is divided into four research areas: evaluation of leaching measurement methods, leaching from recycled asphalt materials, leaching characteristics of porous asphalt pavements, and waste-modified asphalt mixtures. Moreover, a critical discussion of bibliometric data, literature content and knowledge gaps in this domain is provided to help highway agencies and environmental scientists address contaminant leaching from asphalt pavements. Finally, some potential research directions are suggested for future research works.

Column leaching tests have become a standard method for assessing leaching of pollutants from materials used, e.g., for road and railway constructions and in landscaping measures. Column tests showed to be practical in laboratories yielding robust and reproducible results. However, considerable uncertainty still exists related particularly to the degree of equilibration of the pore water with the solids during preparation (pre-equilibration) and percolation of the column. We analyse equilibration time scales and sensitivity of concentrations in column leachate with respect to initial conditions in a series of numerical experiments covering a broad spectrum of material and solute properties. Slow release of pollutants from solid materials is described by a spherical diffusion model of kinetic sorption accounting for multiple grain size fractions and sorption capacities. Results show that the cumulative concentrations are rather independent of the pre-equilibration level for a broad spectrum of parameter settings, e.g. if intra-particle porosity is high, grain size is small, or if the sorption coefficient is large. Sensitivity increases with decreasing liquid solid ratios and contact time during percolation. Significant variations with initial column conditions are to be expected for material and compound properties leading to slow release kinetics. In these cases, sensitivity to initial conditions may have to be considered.

Groundwater pumping changes the behavior of subsurface water, including the location of the water table and characteristics of the flow system, and eventually affects the fate of contaminants, such as nitrate from agricultural fertilizers. The objectives of this study were to demonstrate the importance of considering the existing pumping conditions for contaminant loading management and to develop a management model to obtain a contaminant loading design more appropriate and practical for agricultural regions where groundwater pumping is common. Results from this study found that optimal designs for contaminant loading could be determined differently when the existing pumping conditions were considered. This study also showed that prediction of contamination and contaminant loading management without considering pumping activities might be unrealistic. Motivated by these results, a management model optimizing the permissible on-ground contaminant loading mass together with pumping rates was developed and applied to field investigation and monitoring data from Icheon, Korea. The analytical solution for 1-D unsaturated solute transport was integrated with the 3-D saturated solute transport model in order to approximate the fate of contaminants loaded periodically from on-ground sources. This model was further expanded to manage agricultural contaminant loading in regions where groundwater extraction tends to be concentrated in a specific period of time, such as during the rice-growing season, using a method that approximates contaminant leaching to a fluctuating water table. The results illustrated that the simultaneous management of groundwater quantity and quality was effective and appropriate to the agricultural contaminant loading management and the model developed in this study, which can consider time-variant pumping, could be used to accurately estimate and to reasonably manage contaminant loading in agricultural areas.
