BACKGROUND: Structural income inequality - the uneven income distribution across regions or countries - could affect brain structure and function, beyond individual differences. However, the impact of structural income inequality on the brain dynamics and the roles of demographics and cognition in these associations remains unexplored. METHODS: Here, we assessed the impact of structural income inequality, as measured by the Gini coefficient on multiple EEG metrics, while considering the subject-level effects of demographic (age, sex, education) and cognitive factors. Resting-state EEG signals were collected from a diverse sample (countries = 10; healthy individuals = 1394 from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Chile, Cuba, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Turkey and United Kingdom). Complexity (fractal dimension, permutation entropy, Wiener entropy, spectral structure variability), power spectral and aperiodic components (1/f slope, knee, offset), as well as graph-theoretic measures were analysed. FINDINGS: Despite variability in samples, data collection methods, and EEG acquisition parameters, structural inequality systematically predicted electrophysiological brain dynamics, proving to be a more crucial determinant of brain dynamics than individual-level factors. Complexity and aperiodic activity metrics captured better the effects of structural inequality on brain function. Following inequality, age and cognition emerged as the most influential predictors. The overall results provided convergent multimodal metrics of biologic embedding of structural income inequality characterised by less complex signals, increased random asynchronous neural activity, and reduced alpha and beta power, particularly over temporoposterior regions. CONCLUSION: These findings might challenge conventional neuroscience approaches that tend to overemphasise the influence of individual-level factors, while neglecting structural factors. Results pave the way for neuroscience-informed public policies aimed at tackling structural inequalities in diverse populations.

PURPOSE: While treatments for primary brain tumors increase survival, they have cognitive sequelae. Neurocognition's anatomical distribution makes it susceptible to brain damage. This study aims to evaluate the contribution of radiotherapy on short-term cognitive impairment. METHODS/PATIENTS: Using a prospective database of cognitive rehabilitation in adults operated on for primary brain tumors, a retrospective sub-analysis of the contribution of radiotherapy was performed. Thirty-four subdivisions of 12 neurocognitive regions were delineated in 48 irradiated patients and 30 non-irradiated patients. In the first group, the correlation between radiation dose and deterioration was evaluated. In all patients, the impact of tumor and surgical changes on dysfunction was calculated and compared with dose-dependent response. RESULTS: The correlation between cognitive status and radiation dose is especially strong and significant in the left hemisphere and in specific subdivisions such as the posterior hippocampus or the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, with the left prevailing over posterior dominance. Memory is the most affected domain 1 month after radiotherapy, as attention is three months later. The hippocampus is involved in various cognitive domains in addition to memory. The prefrontal subregions and the genu of the corpus callosum are more affected by the relationship with disease and surgical changes than by radiation exposure. Patients ongoing a course of radiotherapy do not benefit from concurrent cognitive rehabilitation. CONCLUSIONS: There is a correlation between the dose of radiation received by several encephalic regions and degree of short-term domain-specific cognition decline, considering other factors of risk and cognitive rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: Evidence has suggested that cognitive decline may be a risk factor for freezing of gait (FOG) in Parkinson's disease (PD). Complex and challenging exercises have been suggested as potential rehabilitation strategies to decrease FOG severity and improve cognition; however, it is unknown whether improvement in cognition would explain decreased FOG severity following exercise. OBJECTIVE: In this secondary analysis, we evaluated the effects of the adapted resistance training with instability (ARTI-complex and challenging exercises) compared with traditional motor rehabilitation (TMR-without challenging exercises) on cognitive function in people with FOG of PD. We also verified whether cognitive improvement explains the decrease in FOG previously published. METHODS: Participants were randomized to either the experimental group (ARTI, n = 17) or the active control group (TMR, n = 15). Both training groups exercised 3 times a week for 12 weeks (80-90 minute each session). FOG severity (FOG ratio from inertial sensors during a 360° turning-in-place task), frontal lobe function (Frontal Assessment Battery [FAB]), global cognition (Montreal Cognitive Assessment [MoCA]), and attention and psychomotor speed (Digit Symbol Substitution Test [DSST]) were evaluated before and after interventions. RESULTS: Only the ARTI group improved FAB, MoCA, and DSST scores at posttraining. In addition, ARTI was more effective than TMR in improving FAB scores at posttraining. The changes in FAB scores explained the changes in FOG ratio following ARTI (R2 = .43, P < .01). CONCLUSIONS: This pilot study suggests that ARTI, a complex and challenging training, improves cognition in people with FOG of PD. Improvements in frontal lobe function with ARTI help explain decreased FOG severity.

BACKGROUND: The burden of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) in Costa Rica is expected to become one of the highest in the region. Early detection will help optimize resources and improve primary care interventions. The Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) has shown good sensitivity for detecting mild cognitive impairment (MCI), but specificity varies depending on the population. This motivated the analysis of different cutoffs to minimize false-positive classifications in a Costa Rican sample for its use in clinical settings. METHODS: Data was analyzed from 516 memory clinic outpatients (148 cognitively normal, 260 MCI, 108 mild AD/ADRD; mean age 66.3 ± 10.8 years) who underwent complete neurological and neuropsychological assessment and were diagnosed by consensus. Optimal MoCA cutoff scores were identified using a multiple cutoff approach. RESULTS: Overall, a cutoff score of ≥ 23 showed better accuracy to distinguish between normal cognition (NC) and MCI (sensitivity 73%, specificity 83%). When analyzed by educational levels, a cutoff score of ≥ 21 showed better accuracy for ≤ 6 years (sensitivity 80%, specificity 76%), ≥23 for 7-12 years (sensitivity 86%, specificity 76%) and ≥ 24 for > 12 years (sensitivity 70%, specificity 85%). For distinguishing MCI from mild AD/ADRD, the optimal overall cutoff score was ≥ 15 (sensitivity 66%, specificity 85%). When stratified by years of education, cutoff scores of ≥ 14 showed better accuracy for ≤ 6 years (sensitivity 70%, specificity 88%), ≥15 for 7-12 years (sensitivity 46%, specificity 95%) and ≥ 17 for > 12 years (sensitivity 67%, specificity 93%). CONCLUSIONS: A MoCA cutoff score of ≥ 23 in the Costa Rican population showed better diagnostic accuracy for detecting MCI and may reduce the false positive rate. Our findings may be helpful for primary care clinical settings and further referral criteria.

Evidence suggests that neuropsychiatric symptoms and deficits in attentional control and executive function can impair time discrimination, demonstrating the intricate link between cognitive processes, subjective well-being, and perception of time. However, the relationship between sleep quality and time discrimination remains elusive. This study aimed to understand differences in the temporal bisection task (TBT) performance. We expected that individuals with impaired cognition, executive function, quality of life, or sleep quality would have reduced time sensitivity. At the same time, those with stress, anxiety, or depression would show a shift in the point of subjective equality. Data were collected from 97 female participants (ranging from 20 to 72 years of age) in more than one moment, resulting in 163 measurements used for the analysis. Participants' neuropsychiatric status was assessed using a battery of tests and scales, including the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Frontal Assessment Battery (FAB), the World Health Organization Quality of Life Questionnaire (WHOQOL), the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 items (DASS-21). The results showed that attention and executive control significantly affect time discrimination. In addition, the research indicated that better sleep quality is associated with improved time discrimination sensitivity.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the neural mechanisms that differentiate mind-body practices from aerobic physical activities and elucidate their effects on cognition and healthy aging. We examined functional brain connectivity in older adults (age > 60) without pre-existing uncontrolled chronic diseases, comparing Tai Chi with Water Aerobics practitioners. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional, case-control fMRI study involving two strictly matched groups (n = 32) based on gender, age, education, and years of practice. Seed-to-voxel analysis was performed using the Salience, and Frontoparietal Networks as seed regions in Stroop Word-Color and N-Back tasks and Resting State. Results: During Resting State condition and using Salience network as a seed, Tai Chi group exhibited a stronger correlation between Anterior Cingulate Cortex and Insular Cortex areas (regions related to interoceptive awareness, cognitive control and motor organization of subjective aspects of experience). In N-Back task and using Salience network as seed, Tai Chi group showed increased correlation between Left Supramarginal Gyrus and various cerebellar regions (related to memory, attention, cognitive processing, sensorimotor control and cognitive flexibility). In Stroop task, using Salience network as seed, Tai Chi group showed enhanced correlation between Left Rostral Prefrontal Cortex and Right Occipital Pole, and Right Lateral Occipital Cortex (areas associated with sustained attention, prospective memory, mediate attention between external stimuli and internal intention). Additionally, in Stroop task, using Frontoparietal network as seed, Water Aerobics group exhibited a stronger correlation between Left Posterior Parietal Lobe (specialized in word meaning, representing motor actions, motor planning directed to objects, and general perception) and different cerebellar regions (linked to object mirroring). Conclusion: Our study provides evidence of differences in functional connectivity between older adults who have received training in a mind-body practice (Tai Chi) or in an aerobic physical activity (Water Aerobics) when performing attentional and working memory tasks, as well as during resting state.

Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) is the second most common cause of cognitive impairment after Alzheimer's disease. The VCI spectrum involves a decline in cognition attributable to vascular pathologies (e.g., large infarcts or hemorrhages, microinfarcts, microbleeds, lacunar infarcts, white matter hyperintensities, and perivascular space dilation). Pathophysiological mechanisms include direct tissue injury, small vessel disease, inflammaging (inflammation + aging), atrophy, and altered neurotransmission. VCI is diagnosed using distinct clinical and radiological criteria. It may lead to long-term disability and reduced quality of life. An essential factor for reducing cognitive impairment incidence is preventing stroke by managing traditional and non-traditional cerebrovascular risk factors. This article reviews the spectrum of VCI, epidemiology, risk factors, pathophysiology, diagnosis, available treatment, and preventive strategies.


O comprometimento cognitivo vascular (CCV) é a segunda causa mais comum de comprometimento cognitivo depois da doença de Alzheimer. O espectro do CCV envolve um declínio na cognição atribuível a patologias vasculares (por exemplo, grandes infartos ou hemorragias, microinfartos, micro-hemorragias, infartos lacunares, hiperintensidades da substância branca e dilatação do espaço perivascular). Os mecanismos fisiopatológicos incluem lesão tecidual direta, doença de pequenos vasos, inflammaging (inflamação+envelhecimento), atrofia e neurotransmissão alterada. O CCV é diagnosticado usando critérios clínicos e radiológicos distintos. Pode levar à incapacidade a longo prazo e à redução da qualidade de vida. Um fator essencial para reduzir a incidência de comprometimento cognitivo é prevenir o acidente vascular cerebral através do manejo dos fatores de risco cerebrovasculares tradicionais e não tradicionais. Este artigo revisa o espectro do CCV, epidemiologia, fatores de risco, fisiopatologia, diagnóstico, tratamento disponível e estratégias preventivas.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare socio-cognitive skills and emotion comprehension between children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and children with neurotypical development. METHODS: This quantitative, cross-sectional, controlled study involved 19 children in each group, matched by age (6-12 years) and sex. The assessments examined cognitive aspects (Intelligence Quotient was assessed using the Vocabulary and Matrix Reasoning subtests; working memory using the digit span and letter-number sequencing subtests; attention using the Continuous Performance Test - Identical Pairs; and executive functions using the Trail Making Test), social functions (Children's Social Skills, Behavior Problems, and Academic Competence Inventory), and emotion comprehension (language was assessed using the Strange Stories Test; emotional facial expressions using the digital emotion comprehension test; emotional/affective prosody using the Profiling Elements of Prosody in Speech-Communication - Brazilian Portuguese adapted version). RESULTS: The group with ASD exhibited better performance in executive functions (p=0.02). However, they lagged the control group in social skills (p=0.04), behavior problems (p=0.03), and emotion comprehension (language, facial expressions, and prosody) (all p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The findings indicate that children with ASD have diminished performance in social skills and emotion comprehension compared to children with neurotypical development. Therefore, the development of technologies and/or therapeutic interventions that address these deficits among children with ASD is recommended.

INTRODUCTION: The effect of pump flow type on perfusion in coronary surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is discussed. We aimed to evaluate the effect of pump flow type on cognitive functions with neurocognitive function tests. METHODS: One hundred patients who underwent isolated coronary artery bypass surgery between November 2020 and July 2021 were divided into two equa groups. Groups were formed according to pump flow type pulsatile (Group 1) and non-pulsatile (Group 2). Clock drawing test (CDT) and standardized mini mental test (SMMT) were performed on the patients in both groups in the preoperative period, on the 1st preoperative day, and on the day before discharge. Neurocognitive effects were compared with all follow-up parameters. RESULTS: There was no difference between the groups in terms of demographic data and in terms of neurocognitive tests performed before the operation. SMMT on postoperative day 1 (Group I: 27.64 ± 1.05; Group II: 24.44 ± 1.64; P=0.001) and CDT (Group I: 5.4 ± 0.54; Group II: 4 .66 ± 0.52; P=0.001), and SMMT on the day before discharge (Group I: 27.92 ± 1.16; Group II: 24.66 ± 1.22; P=0.001) and CDT (Group I: 5 It was calculated as .66 ± 0.48; Group II: 5.44 ± 0.5; P=0.001). The duration of intensive care and hospitalization were higher in the non-pulsatile group. CONCLUSION: We think that the type of pump flow used in coronary artery bypass surgery using CPB is effective in terms of neurocognitive functions and that pulsatile flow makes positive contributions to this issue.

BACKGROUND: The impact of cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) on cognition is thought to be mediated by brain-derived neurotrophic factor. Aerobic exercise can increase CRF through various activities, including sports participation. The relationship between these factors in females has yet to be elucidated. OBJECTIVE: This review aims to map the current literature on the effects of aerobic exercise, sports participation, and CRF in healthy adult females, with sub-topics of pregnancy and menstrual cycle periodicity. METHODS: A scoping review of the literature was conducted following PRISMA guidelines and the PCC mnemonic (population, concept, and context). The following five databases were screened: CINAHL, Medline, Web of Science, SPORTDiscus, and Scopus. Eligible articles included healthy adult females, investigated aerobic exercise, sports participation or CRF, and linked outcomes to cognition. Data from included manuscripts was extracted and analyzed. Two sub-population groupings (pregnant individuals and menstrual cycle) were established to further aid the interpretation of the findings. RESULTS: Of the 300 titles and abstracts screened, 74 were eligible for full-text screening, and 28 were included in the scoping review. Of the 28 included, 14 did not control for or report on menstrual cycle phase or sex hormones. CONCLUSION: This scoping review found an inverse 'U' relationship between aerobic exercise and cognition, demonstrating an optimal dose of aerobic exercise to benefit cognitive functions. As estrogen may impact the relationship between CRF and neural growth factors, more research is needed on this pathway, independent of the menstrual cycle, to determine potential beneficial effects. It is currently unknown whether sports participation can independently impact cognition.

It is estimated that about 1 in 100 live births has a congenital heart disease (CHD). Cognitive deficit, academic difficulties, and behavioral abnormalities, in combination, represent the most common morbidity affecting quality of life in survivors with CHD. Developmental dysfunction results from a complex interaction between patient-specific factors such as genetic susceptibility, cardiac diagnosis, fetal development, and environmental factors such as preoperative events, supportive techniques during surgical repair, postoperative events, socioeconomic status. A comprehensive neurodevelopmental assessment in all children with CHD is critical to identify any need for intervention early and provide the support needed to optimize their long-term development.


Se estima que aproximadamente 1 de cada 100 nacidos vivos presenta una cardiopatía congénita (CC). El déficit cognitivo, las dificultades académicas y anomalías conductuales, en combinación, representan la morbilidad más común que afecta la calidad de vida en sobrevivientes con CC. La disfunción del desarrollo resulta de una interacción compleja entre factores específicos del paciente como susceptibilidad genética, tipo de cardiopatía, desarrollo fetal y factores ambientales tales como eventos preoperatorios, técnicas de apoyo durante la reparación quirúrgica, eventos posoperatorios, estatus socioeconómico. Una evaluación integral del neurodesarrollo en todos los niños con CC es fundamental para identificar tempranamente cualquier necesidad de intervención y proporcionar el apoyo necesario para optimizar su desarrollo a largo plazo.

BACKGROUND: Lead exposure reduces the cognitive development and future economic prospects of children. While previous studies in high-income settings have explored productivity losses associated with lead exposure, limited research has focused on low and middle-income countries like Mexico. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to provide a comprehensive assessment of the economic implications of lead exposure on Mexican children using, for the first time, nationally representative Blood Lead Levels (BLLs) measurements in children aged 1-4, specifically focusing on the costs of forgone lifetime income due to cognitive losses. METHODS: BLLs of children aged 1-4 were extracted from the 2018-2019 National Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANUT). Estimations of cognitive losses were derived from a log-linear relationship between BLLs and IQ loss. Lost lifetime economic productivity per child was calculated, assuming a 2% reduction in lifetime potential productivity for each IQ point lost due to lead exposure, based on previous literature (Attina and Trasande, 2013; Larsen and Sánchez-Triana, 2023). Productivity data were obtained from representative sources for Mexico. RESULTS: The estimated economic loss amounted to US $33.02 billion, equivalent to 2.76% of Mexico's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2019 (calculated for a 1-year cohort). On a national scale, the long-term loss of cognition for children 1-4 years old is 4.14 IQ points per child due to lead exposure, with significant variability across States (range: 3.26 to 5.26). Lead-poisoned children (≥5 µg/dL) suffered an average loss of 6.42 IQ points (range: 0 to 6.97). In terms of economic impact, some States like Chiapas experienced losses of 7.08% of its GDP, while others had losses as low as 0.67%. Intriguingly, states with lower Human Development Index (HDIs) exhibited relatively higher economic losses despite lower average blood lead levels. DISCUSSION: The heterogeneous impact of lead exposure across Mexican states underscores the necessity for tailored regional policies. These findings emphasize the urgency for targeted interventions and informed policy measures to mitigate the socioeconomic consequences of lead exposure on Mexican children.

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs and is associated with decreased quality of life and sleep, and may result in cognitive changes. Physical exercise generates cognitive improvements and improves RLS symptoms. Our objective is to analyze recognition memory in the iron-deficient rodent model of RLS, and the effect of exercise. The animals (male Wistar rats) were distributed at 21 days of age into a control group (CTRL) (standard diet) or an ID group (iron-deficient diet). After performance classification (at 77 days of age), the animals were redistributed into CTRL (no exercise), CTRL EX (exercise), ID (no exercise) and ID EX (exercise), totaling 9 animals per group. The exercise groups performed treadmill exercise for four weeks. In the 14th week of the diet, the sleep recording of CTRL and ID animals was carried out to validate the RLS model. The Novel Object Recognition Memory test (NOR) was performed before the start of exercise (8th week of diet) and after the end (14th week) in all groups. The ID group demonstrated worsening sleep parameters and increased paw movements compared to the control group. The ID group demonstrated impairment of recognition memory after 14 weeks of diet compared to the CTRL group, and, the CTRL improved recognition memory in the 14th week compared to the 8th week. No differences were found for the exercise groups. Our findings indicate that the RLS animal model exhibited cognitive alterations associated with recognition memory, and long-term aerobic exercise intervention demonstrated a protective influence against these effects.

Background: In the last decades, the association of household pesticide usage with Parkinson's disease (PD) has been poorly explored, with discordant results. Based on the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) cohort study, we analyzed (1) the association of household pesticide exposure with the development of PD and (2) the effect of household pesticides on progression of PD. Methods: Data from participants of the "FOllow Up persons with Neurologic Disease" (FOUND study) included in the PPMI cohort database were analyzed. The PPMI FOUND study applied the Parkinson's Disease Risk Factor Questionnaire to collect information regarding the use of pesticides in non-work settings during periods of life, and the lifetime pesticide exposure for each participant was estimated. We defined a high use of pesticides if the exposure estimate had a z-score higher than one standard deviation from the mean. Also, we evaluated longitudinal data of people with PD to analyze the effect of high use of household pesticides on disease progression according to motor impairment, cognitive dysfunction, depressive symptoms, and modification of motor clinical phenotype. Results: We analyzed data from 206 people with PD and 64 healthy controls, almost all from the USA. High use of household pesticides was not associated with the odds of developing PD. Regarding PD progression, only cognitive dysfunction was associated with the high use of household fungicides (HR 5.64 per standard deviation increase in exposure estimate, 95% CI 1.41-22.6). Conclusions: Chronic exposure to household pesticides may impact the clinical progression of PD, especially cognitive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Executive function (EF) deficits are a significant risk factor for falls among older adults (OAs). However, relationship between EF subdomains (shifting, updating, and inhibition), postural balance (PB), and fall risk in healthy OAs, remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between EF subdomains (shifting, updating, and inhibition) and PB, and to assess their impact on risk of falls in community-dwelling OAs. METHODS: A cross-sectional study involving 50 OAs aged over 60 years (average age of 72 years) was conducted. Participants underwent assessments of EF subdomains and PB using validated tests. A correlation analysis was employed to examine the relationships between EF and PB. RESULTS: The study revealed significant correlations between subdomains and PB. Mental set shifting (r = -.539; p < .001) and inhibition (r = -.395; p = .050) exhibited inverse relationships with PB. Stepwise multiple linear regression showed that Trail Making Test Part B was associated with the PB (R2 = .42, p < .001). CONCLUSION: These findings highlight the importance of assessing EF subdomains, particularly shifting and inhibition, to identify risk of falls. Trail Making Test Part B largely explains the variability of the PB. Integrating PB assessments and EF training, such as the Mini-BESTest, into routine care can be vital for fall prevention strategies. Significance/Implications: This knowledge underscores the need for cognitive training interventions focusing on shifting and inhibition to enhance PB and potentially reduce falls. Additionally, incorporation of EF assessment tools as Trail Making Test Part B and the Mini-BESTest into routine clinical practice for community-dwelling OAs is recommended to address fall prevention strategies.

Objectives (1) To investigate longitudinal associations between grip strength (GS) and cognition over 4 years in European older adults, (2) to examine differences in temporal associations between men and women and between levels of physical activity, (3) to explore in each year 2015 and 2019 associations between GS quartiles and cognitive performance, and (4) to explore longitudinal associations between GS quartiles (year 2015) and cognitive performance (year 2019). Methods: 25,281 individuals (14,200 women) from 17 European countries aged ≥50 years responded to waves 6th and 8th of the SHARE project. We analyzed GS, a general cognition index, and physical activity level. Results: Panel analyses revealed a bidirectional relationship over 4 years between GS and cognition, with differences between sex, as well as between participants with moderate-to-vigorous and low physical activity levels. Conclusion: Women and participants with low physical activity were more likely to experience cognitive performance deficits 4 years later.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to determine the effect of years of schooling (YoS) and age on the Mexican adaptation of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD-MX) scores in preclinical carriers group (PCG) and non-carriers group (NCG) of the APP V717I mutation. METHODS: We included 39 first-degree Mexican relatives of APP V717I carriers (PCG = 15; NCG = 24). We report eight CERAD-MX tasks: Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Word List Learning (WLL), Delayed Recall (WLD) and Recognition (WLR), Constructional Praxis Copy (CPC) and Recall (CPR), Semantic Verbal Fluency (SVF), and Verbal Boston Naming (VBN), comparing both groups' performance and simulating new samples' random vectors by inverse transform sampling. RESULTS: PCG and NCG performed similarly on CERAD-MX. In both groups, YoS and age influence all z scores. A positive age effect resulted for PCG on CPC and SVF; for the NCG on MMSE, SVF, and VBN. DISCUSSION: All tasks are influenced by YoS. Higher YoS/younger age or YoS/older age interactions affected different tasks, suggesting that YoS confounds outcomes. Highlights: Years of schooling (YoS) and age affect the Mexican adaptation of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease scores of APP V717I preclinical carriers.Preclinical carriers underperformed non-carriers on Constructional Praxis Recall.Fewer YoS emerges as a confounding variable when detecting cognitive failures.Younger participants in both groups overperformed the older ones in the Memory tasks.Randomized data simulation increases statistical power when analyzing rare diseases.

Vespula vulgaris is an invasive social wasp that has become established in many parts of the world. Plastic cognitive systems are expected to be advantageous for invasive species, given that they continuously face dynamic and unpredictable environments. We analyzed foraging behavior associated with undepleted and depleted resources. The wasps were trained to associate a certain location with food and we recorded their behavior after successive displacement of it. We also studied how long wasps continued to search for food that was no longer available and whether it was dependent on experience. We found that when wasps associated a certain location with food, they returned to the same site even though food was no longer available or had been displaced. Handling time remained constant, while relocation time and learning flights decreased with experience. With a food position change, learning flights increased and searching time varied with experience. When food was removed, hovering and landings were greatest in wasps that had the most experience with the resource, although extinction of the searching response was not dependent on experience. Our results illustrate the plasticity of wasp behavior in uncertain foraging contexts, which could have allowed the species to establish successfully in new habitats.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive decline is prevalent in maintenance hemodialysis patients. The blood-brain barrier has been implicated in cognitive decline. In this prospective cohort study, we investigated the associations between endothelium-related biomarkers and steeper cognitive decline in this population. METHODS: Cognitive function was assessed using the Portuguese-adapted Cambridge Cognitive Examination (CAMCOG) with items of the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Endothelium-related biomarkers included syndecan-1, ICAM-1, VCAM-1 and angiopoietin-2 (AGPT2). Patients were followed up for 4 years, and cognitive assessments were repeated. Multinomial regression analyses were performed to evaluate associations between biomarkers and cognitive decline. RESULTS: A total of 216 patients completed the test battery at baseline. After 4 years, 102 patients had follow-up data. There was a significant decrease in cognitive function according to the CAMCOG and MMSE scores: a change of -0.39 (95% CI -0.27 to -0.51) and -0.51 (95% CI -0.27 to -0.76) standard deviation (SD) of the baseline scores. Additionally, executive function but not memory significantly decreased. Syndecan-1 level was independently associated with steeper cognitive decline; each increase in the SD of the syndecan-1 level was associated with a decrease in the CAMCOG of 0.20 (95% CI 0.07-0.33) SD from baseline. Syndecan-1 was associated with a steeper decline in MMSE score (ß 0.54, 95% CI 0.28-0.81) and executive function (ß 0.17, 95% CI 0.02-0.32). Syndecan-1 predicted severe cognitive impairment with an area under the curve for receiver operating characteristic curves of 0.75 (95% CI 0.64-0.83). CONCLUSION: Our findings highlight the potential of syndecan-1, a biomarker of endothelium glycocalyx derangement, as a predictor of steeper cognitive decline in prevalent hemodialysis patients.
