RESUMEN

Purpose: The purpose of this research was to examine the correlates of dysfunctional career thoughts (DCTs) in a sample of breast cancers survivors. Sample and design: A total of 195 breast cancer survivors from the Bahamas completed a cross-sectional survey. Methods: The Career Thoughts Inventory (CTI) and standard medical and demographic items were administered. Analysis of Variance and logistic regression models were used to examine associations. Findings: Total CTI scores differed by age group, marital status, surgical remedy, and employment prior to diagnosis. The odds of DCT were higher among younger (Odds Ratio [OR] = 4.4), married (OR = 2.4), who were unemployed prior to diagnosis (OR = 3.5). Conclusion: Dysfunctional career thoughts appear to be common in certain breast cancer survivors. Further research is needed to determine whether similar associations are observed in other samples. Implications for Providers: Providers should discuss DCTs after treatment.

(AU)

This research was developed with the objective of understanding the interrelationships between career psychological dimensions (negative thoughts and career adaptability), psychological capital and domains of work life (career success and perceived employability) and non-work (satisfaction with life). Two samples were used, the former consisting of 189 university students with a mean age of 21.44 years (SD = 3.33), and 65.1% were female. The latter group consisted of 312 upper-level employees with a mean age of 27.88 years (SD = 5.19), of which 51% were female. The results from structural equation models have demonstrated that for university students the working and non-working life contexts are influenced by adaptability and negative career thoughts. For workers, the results demonstrated the influence of negative career thoughts and the psychological capital. It is discussed applications for research and the context of career guidance and career development. (AU)

(AU)

RESUMEN

Negative career thoughts are cognitive barriers that interfere with an individual's career decision-making and successful career development. The current study examined the effect of rational-emotive behavior therapy (REBT) on negative career thoughts of students in technical colleges in Nigeria. The study utilized a pretest-posttest control group design. One hundred and seventy-three participants from technical colleges in the Southeast zone of the country completed a measure of career thoughts at pretest, posttreatment, and follow-up: the College Students' Career Thoughts Scale. An REBT career program manual guided the intervention for 12 weeks. Data collected were analyzed using repeated-measures analysis of variance, chi-square, and t-test. Results show that the negative career thoughts of the REBT group participants were significantly reduced relative to a waitlist control group at the end of the intervention. Follow-up tests conducted after three months and six months revealed that the significant decrease in negative career thoughts of the REBT group participants was sustained. The outcomes of the current study suggest that REBT is an invaluable group therapy for assisting college students in overcoming negative thoughts associated with career choice and decision. It would be helpful if further longitudinal evaluation were implemented in Nigeria and in other countries to evaluate whether and how an REBT-based program can improve vocational maturity and vocational identity of technical college students.
