RESUMEN

Carbonate formations constitute the primary source of hydrocarbon reservoirs worldwide, highlighting the importance of gaining a deeper understanding of matrix acidizing phenomena to enhance well productivity in these formations. Microstructural analysis of acidified cores is a key method to assess acidizing systems in carbonate rock samples. X-ray computed microtomography (Micro-CT) has significantly contributed to this field, primarily focusing on the qualitative and quantitative characterization of the profiles of carbonate mineral dissolution, also known as wormholes, created during matrix acidizing. This non-destructive evaluation technique allows the internal analysis of a sample without altering its internal structure or chemical composition. This work focuses on a comprehensive review of the research studies and the main applications of micro-CT for evaluating and characterizing matrix acidizing in carbonates. First, an overview of the fundamentals of micro-CT and acid stimulation in carbonates is provided. Next, the applications of micro-CT are discussed and grouped into microstructural characteristics of wormholes, dynamic in-situ experiments, and pore-scale modeling topics. A case study is presented with a methodology based on micro-CT analysis for matrix acidizing. Finally, future work and current challenges, such as 4D CT and CT-based acidizing models, are discussed.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE) is a significant cause of maternal mortality worldwide, affecting 2% to 8% of pregnancies. The World Health Organization recommends the use of low-dose acetylsalicylic acid (100 mg of aspirin) and 1.5 to 2 g of calcium carbonate during pregnancy to prevent PE. However, robust evidence supporting the efficacy of calcium supplementation is still needed. This study aims to assess the efficacy of calcium carbonate in preventing preeclampsia in high-risk pregnant women. METHODS: A triple-blind, randomized clinical trial will be conducted at an outpatient clinic in Brazil between May 2024 and March 2026. Pregnant women at high risk of developing preeclampsia and with low dietary calcium intake will be randomly assigned to one of three groups: one group will receive calcium carbonate capsules (commercially available in Brazil) along with 100 mg of aspirin; the second group will receive calcium carbonate derived from Crassostrea sp. along with 100 mg of aspirin; and the control group will receive a placebo alongside 100 mg of aspirin. The primary outcome is the diagnosis of preeclampsia during pregnancy, while secondary outcomes evaluate maternal and fetal health indicators. DISCUSSION: This trial seeks to generate evidence on the efficacy of calcium carbonate in preeclampsia prevention, with a focus on comparing industrial calcium carbonate with calcium carbonate sourced from Crassostrea sp., a more sustainable alternative. TRIAL REGISTRATION: The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Federal University of Sergipe and registered in the Brazilian Registry of Clinical Trials (ReBEC), under the ID RBR-7hqhj3y. Registered on November 16, 2023.

RESUMEN

Lithium, a natural element, has been employed as a mental stabilizer in psychiatric treatments; however, some reports indicate it has an anticancer effect, prompting the consideration of repurposing lithium for cancer treatment. The potential anticancer use of lithium may depend on its form (salt type) and the type of cancer cells targeted. Little is known about the effects of Li2CO3 or LiCl on cancer cells, so we focused on exploring their effects on proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and cell cycle as part of the hallmarks of cancer. Firstly, we established the IC50 values on HeLa, SiHa, and HaCaT cells with LiCl and Li2CO3 and determined by crystal violet that cell proliferation was time-dependent in the three cell lines (IC50 values for LiCl were 23.43 mM for SiHa, 23.14 mM for HeLa, and 15.10 mM for HaCaT cells, while the IC50 values for Li2CO3 were 20.57 mM for SiHa, 11.52 mM for HeLa, and 10.52 mM for HaCaT cells.) Our findings indicate that Li2CO3 and LiCl induce DNA fragmentation and caspase-independent apoptosis, as shown by TUNEL, Western Blot, and Annexin V/IP assay by flow cytometry. Also, cell cycle analysis showed that LiCl and Li2CO3 arrested the cervical cancer cells at the G1 phase. Moreover, lithium salts displayed an anti-migratory effect on the three cell lines observed by the wound-healing assay. All these findings imply the viable anticancer effect of lithium salts by targeting several of the hallmarks of cancer.

RESUMEN

Current climate projections for mid-latitude regions globally indicate an intensification of wind-driven coastal upwelling due to warming conditions. The dynamics of mid-latitude coastal upwelling are marked by environmental variability across temporal scales, which affect key physiological processes in marine calcifying organisms and can impact their large-scale distribution patterns. In this context, marine invertebrates often exhibit phenotypic plasticity, enabling them to adapt to environmental change. In this study, we examined the physiological performance (i.e., metabolism, Thermal Performance Curves, and biomass and calcification rates) of individuals of the intertidal mollusk Chiton granosus, a chiton found from northern Peru to Cape Horn (5° to 55°S). Our spatial study design indicated a pattern of contrasting conditions among locations. The Talcaruca site, characterized by persistent upwelling and serving as a biogeographic break, exhibited lower pH and carbonate saturation states, along with higher pCO2, compared to the sites located to the north and south of this location (Huasco and Los Molles, respectively). In agreement with the spatial pattern in carbonate system parameters, long-term temperature records showed lower temperatures that changed faster over synoptic scales (1-15 days) at Talcaruca, in contrast to the more stable conditions at the sites outside the break. Physiological performance traits from individuals from the Talcaruca population exhibited higher values and more significant variability, along with significantly broader and greater warming tolerance than chitons from the Huasco and Los Molles populations. Moreover, marked changes in local abundance patterns over three years suggested population-level responses to the challenging environmental conditions at the biogeographic break. Thus, C. granosus from the Talcaruca upwelling zone represents a local population with wide tolerance ranges that may be capable of withstanding future upwelling intensification on the Southern Eastern Pacific coast and likely serving as a source of propagules for less adapted populations.

RESUMEN

Concentrations of one metalloid (As) and eight metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were determined in tissues (muscle, liver, and kidney) of eight snake species (Bothrops neuwiedi, Crotalus durissus, Dipsas mikanii, Epicrates crassus, Helicops modestus, Micrurus carvalhoi, Oxyrhopus guibei, and Oxyrhopus trigeminus) from Lagoa Santa Karst. Except for Cu and Zn, all other analyzed elements were detected in concentrations within the ranges previously reported for snakes inhabiting polluted areas, emphasizing Hg (specific Hg mean concentrations varied from 0.87 to 9.76 µg g-1 d.w). The highest mean concentrations of all elements except Zn were found in muscle samples of the false corals O. guibei (means ranged from 2.01 [Pb] to 9.76 [Hg]). The highest Zn mean concentration (13.77 µg g-1 d.w) was detected in the kidney of the water snake H. modestus. No significant correlation was found between element concentrations and body size for all species. Significant interorgan differences were observed for As, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Zn concentrations in the three tissues in H. modestus. Significant interspecific differences were found in at least one organ for all elements. Significant pairwise differences were found between diet specialist species and between these species and broader diet species, while no significant difference was found between the broader diet species. The bioaccumulation of As and metals in snakes from Lagoa Santa Karst could be associated with natural rock dissolution and erosion processes but also with the wide-scale mining in the region and the increased agriculture and urbanization.

RESUMEN

Monometallic and bimetallic Cu:Ni catalysts with different Cu:Ni molar ratios (3:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, 1:3) were synthesized by wetness impregnation on activated carbon and characterized by TPR (temperature programmed reduction), XRD (X-ray diffraction) and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). The synthesized catalysts were evaluated in the gas phase production of diethyl carbonate from ethanol and carbon dioxide. The largest catalytic activity was obtained over the bimetallic catalyst with a Cu:Ni molar ratio of 3:1. Its improved activity was attributed to the formation of a Cu-Ni alloy on the surface of the catalyst, evidenced by XPS and in agreement with a previous assignment based on Vegard law and TPR analysis. During the reaction rate experiments, it observed the presence of a maximum of the reaction rate as a function of temperature, a tendency also reported for other carbon dioxide-alcohol reactions. It showed that the reaction rate-temperature data can be adjusted with a reversible rate equation. The initial rate as a function of reactant partial pressure data was satisfactorily adjusted using the forward power law rate equation and it was found that the reaction rate is first order in CO2 and second order in ethanol.

RESUMEN

The new technology of microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation (MICP) has been applied in construction materials as a strategy to enhance their properties. In pursuit of solutions that are more localized and tailored to the study's target, this work focused on isolating and selecting bacteria capable of producing CaCO3 for posterior application in concrete aggregates. First, eleven bacterial isolates were obtained from aggregates and identified as genera Bacillus, Lysinibacillus, Exiguobacterium, and Micrococcus. Then, the strains were compared based on the quantity and nature of calcium carbonate they produced using thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray diffraction, and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectroscopy. Bacillus sp. dominated the cultured isolates and, along with Lysinibacillus sp., exhibited the highest CaCO3 conversion (up to 80%). On the other hand, Exiguobacterium and Micrococcus genera showed the poor ability to MICP (21.3 and 20.3%, respectively). Calcite and vaterite were the dominant carbonate polymorphs, with varying proportions. Concrete aggregates have proven to be a source of microorganisms capable of producing stable calcium carbonates with a high conversion rate. This indicates the feasibility of using microorganisms derived from local sources for application in construction materials as a sustainable way to enhance their characteristics.

RESUMEN

Quantum dots (QDs) have captured the attention of the scientific community due to their unique optical and electronic properties, leading to extensive research for different applications. They have also been employed as sensors for ionic species owing to their sensing properties. Detecting anionic species in an aqueous medium is a challenge because the polar nature of water weakens the interactions between sensors and ions. The anions bicarbonate (HCO3-), carbonate (CO32-), sulfate (SO42-), and bisulfate (HSO4-) play a crucial role in various physiological, environmental, and industrial processes, influencing the regulation of biological fluids, ocean acidification, and corrosion processes. Therefore, it is necessary to develop approaches capable of detecting these anions with high sensitivity. This study utilized CdTe QDs stabilized with cysteamine (CdTe-CYA) as a fluorescent sensor for these anions. The QDs exhibited favorable optical properties and high photostability. The results revealed a gradual increase in the QDs' emission intensity with successive anion additions, indicating the sensitivity of CdTe-CYA to the anions. The sensor also exhibited selectivity toward the target ions, with good limits of detection (LODs) and quantification (LOQs). Thus, CdTe-CYA QDs show potential as fluorescent sensors for monitoring the target anions in water sources.

RESUMEN

Chitosan (CS) and sodium alginate (SA)-based biocomposites (CSA) were prepared with the in-situ generation of Calcium Carbonate (CSAX_Ca) through a simple, straightforward, economical, and eco-friendly procedure. Different drying conditions (X) were tested to achieve suitable structural and surface characteristics to enhance adsorption capacity: freeze-dried (L), vacuum-dried with methanol (M), and freeze-dried + vacuum-dried with methanol (LM). Temperature and adsorbent dosage effects on the adsorption capacity of Cu2+ or Pb2+ were examined. Results showed that the higher-yielding biocomposite (CSALM_Ca) exhibited rapid adsorption and good diffusion properties, achieving removal above 90 % within contaminant initial concentration ranges of 10-100 mg/L. At 35 °C, a pseudo-second-order kinetic and the Langmuir model effectively described kinetics and isotherms, revealing maximum adsorption (qe, max) of 429 mgCu2+/L and 1742 mgPb2+/g. Characterization through FTIR, XRD, and SEM of the as-prepared adsorbents confirmed the presence of CaCO3 in vaterite and calcite forms and the influence of drying conditions on the material morphology. Post-adsorption material characterization, in combination with adsorption findings, revealed chemisorption processes involving Ca2+ ion exchange for Cu2+ or Pb2+, resulting in surface-insoluble compounds. The best-performing material showed that after three reuse cycles, the removal of Cu2+ and Pb2+ decreased to 75 % and 62 %, respectively.

RESUMEN

Glycerol carbonate (GC) is one of the most attractive green chemicals involved in several applications such as polymer synthesis, e. g., the production of polyurethanes and polycarbonates. This relevant chemical can be produced, in a green way, using CO2 (from carbon capture) and glycerol (a byproduct from biodiesel manufacturing). Therefore, in this work, a comprehensive analysis of the GC production process is conducted based on the following synthesis route: urea-dimethyl carbonate-GC using carbon dioxide and glycerol as the main raw materials where the synthesis pathway was efficiently integrated using Aspen Plus. A techno-economic analysis was performed in order to estimate the required capital investment and operating cost for the whole GC process, providing insights on individual capital cost requirements for the urea, dimethyl carbonate, and GC production sections. A total capital cost of $192.1 MM, and a total operating cost of $225.7 MM/y were estimated for the process. The total annualized cost was estimated as $1,558 USD/t of GC produced, competitive with current market price.

RESUMEN

Abstract: The natural underground environment has unique characteristics when compared to surface environments. These environments feature a reduced complexity food web that includes organisms such as anuran amphibians. This study examines the occurrence of Neotropical anurans in Brazilian caves, utilizing taxonomic, geographic, geological, and environmental data extracted from the scientific literature. A total of 247 anuran records were found in caves across 18 scientific papers covering a 42-years period (from 1980 to 2022). Of these, 177 records (71.6%) displayed the anurans identified to the species level (54 species), with the families Leptodactylidae (13 species; 24.1%), Hylidae (12; 22.2%), and Bufonidae (10; 18.5%) being the most frequently recorded. The anuran records were predominant in the states of Minas Gerais (81 records; 34.8%) and São Paulo (35; 15.0%). The Atlantic Forest had the highest number of records (78; 33.5%), followed by ecotonal zones between the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado (43; 18.5%). Environmental information was scarce in the consulted records, with only 12 providing detail about the cave light zone where the anuran was found (nine in the entrance zone) and 63 indicating the presence/absence of water bodies. Carbonaceous (109; 46.8%) and ferruginous (76; 33.9%) lithology predominated among the caves considered. The low number of sampled caves (55 caves; 0.24%) compared to the total number of caves registered in Brazil (23,278 caves) underscores a knowledge gap regarding Neotropical anurans use of subterranean habitats.

This study reports the use of an inorganic corrosion inhibitor to mitigate dissolved CO2-induced corrosion. Using electrochemical techniques (polarization curves, open circuit potential, polarization resistance, and electrochemical impedance), the effect of adding Nd3+ ions on the corrosion resistance of X52 steel immersed in CO2-saturated brine at 20 °C and 60 °C was evaluated. The polarization curves showed that the Icorr values tend to decrease with increasing Nd3+ ion concentration, up to the optimal inhibition concentration, and that the corrosion potential increases at nobler values. Open circuit potential measurements showed a large increase in potential values immediately after the addition of the Nd3+ ions. Similarly, polarization resistance measurements showed similar trends. It was observed that regardless of temperature, Nd3+ ions can reduce the corrosion rate by more than 97% at doses as low as 0.001 M. Electrochemical impedance measurements confirmed the formation of a protective layer on the steel surface, which caused an increase in the magnitude of the impedance module and phase angle, which indicates an increase in the resistance to charge transfer and capacitive properties of the metallic surface. The characterization of the metallic surface showed that the protective layer was formed by Nd carbonates, whose formation was due to a CO2 capture process.

RESUMEN

Rocks with representative physical and chemical properties are essential to understanding fluid-solid flow behaviors at the pore scale. In this way, studying the pore space characteristics is a key point for evaluating and providing petrophysical properties for distinct rock types, such as synthetic rocks, with controlled and representative properties like natural ones. This work studies the petrophysical properties of synthetic carbonate plugs with a novel approach by correlating particle size, particle size fraction, and the morphology of particles with porosity and permeability, which could guide the scientific community to further forming of carbonate rocks with a controlled pore network. Results indicated that particle shape influenced the accommodation of particles in the porous space and, therefore, in the petrophysical properties, where an increase in particle size decreases porosity and increases permeability. Also, the obtained plugs showed the following petrophysical features: gas porosity from 10% to 17%, mercury porosity from 11% to 19%, gas permeability from 0.07 mD to 0.70 mD, and mercury permeability from 0.02 mD to 0.35 mD, providing important insight on controlling pore space in synthetic carbonate rocks.

RESUMEN

In the conilon coffee tree, the stress caused by high light can reduce the photosynthetic rate, limit the development and also reduce the yield of beans. Considering that the quality of a sunscreen spray can influence photosynthetic performance, the goal was to understand the iterations between the quality of the spray and the variation of the chlorophyll a fluorescence when applying sunscreen on conilon coffee trees. The parameters coverage, volumetric median diameter, density, droplet deposition, and the variation of the chlorophyll a fluorescence were evaluated. The nozzle and application rate factors did not show direct effects in the physiological responses of the plants. Plants with no sunscreen application showed high values of energy dissipation flux. The photosystem II (PSII) performance index and PSII photochemical maximum efficiency indicate that the use of sunscreen for plants promotes better performance of photosynthetic activity and that it provides photoprotection against luminous stress, regardless of the application rate and spraying nozzle; however, we recommend using the application rate of 100 L ha-1 and the cone jet nozzle type because they provide lower risks of product loss due to runoff.

RESUMEN

The title mol-ecule, C14H14O6, is based on a benzene core di-substituted by allyl carbonate groups in the para positions. The mol-ecule is placed on an inversion centre, and the substituents are twisted with respect to the central benzene ring plane. The crystal structure does not include significant inter-molecular inter-actions other than weak C-H⋯O contacts between CH groups in the benzene ring and carbonate O atoms.

RESUMEN

With the advent of biodiesel as a substitute/additive for diesel, the production of glycerol has experienced an increase, as it is an unavoidable byproduct of the biodiesel process; therefore, novel products and processes based on this triol are being very actively researched. Glycerol carbonate emerges as an advanced humectant from glycerol and a monomer for diverse polycarbonates. Its production in high yields and amounts can be achieved through the solventless transcarbonation of glycerol with other organic carbonates driven by alkaline catalysts, standing out amongst the cyclic carbonates due to its reactivity. Here, we have studied the main operational variables that affect the transcarbonation reaction of glycerol and ethylene carbonate catalyzed by zinc stearate: catalyst concentration, reagent molar ratio, and temperature. Subsequently, an appropriate kinetic model was fitted to all data obtained at 80 °C and several catalyst concentrations as well as reagent molar ratios. Finally, the selected kinetic model was extended and validated by fitting it to data obtained at several temperatures, finding that the activation energy of this reaction with this catalyst is around 69.2 kJ·mol-1. The kinetic model suggests that the reaction is bimolecular and elemental and that the process is interfacial in essence, with the catalyst dispersed in a narrow space between polar (glycerol) and nonpolar (ethylene carbonate) phases.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The term "mood stabilizer" is controversial in the literature and criticized for being imprecise and overly inclusive, having its retirement suggested to avoid misuse. Nevertheless, it continues to be employed as it may still carry important meaning. METHODS: We employed document analysis for reviewing relevant definitions of mood stabilizer employed in the literature. Then, we clarify the meanings associated with the term by employing evolutionary concept analysis. Based on its results, we present a theoretical model for a mood stabilizer and further match it with evidence gathered from published meta-analyses and other sources for drugs used in the treatment of bipolar disorder. RESULTS: Concept analysis unearthed four attributes of a mood stabilizer that were nested into the following ascending hierarchy: "not worsening," "acute effects," "prophylactic effects," and "advanced effects." "Prophylactic effects" were often considered the core aspect of a legitimate mood stabilizer. CONCLUSION: The proposed model uses a hierarchy of attributes that take into account the complexity of the term and help to determine whether a drug is a mood stabilizer. Prophylaxis is pivotal to the concept, whose utility lies in implying a drug able to truly treat bipolar disorder, as opposed to merely targeting symptoms. Consistent use of the term could encourage investigation of drugs that modify long-term outcomes and illness trajectory, instead of simply approaching symptom clusters.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of three fresh-water samples with different hardness values (25, 250, and 750 mg L-1 CaCO3) and a control (sea water with salinity 15% and hardness 2500 ± 130.9 mg L-1 CaCO3) on Mugil liza (mullet) juveniles by conducting a long-term test (for 50 days). Zootechnical performance [weight gain (WG), feed conversion rate, specific growth rate, and survival (%)], stress indicator parameters (glucose), and physiological parameters in gill tissues were analyzed to determine the fresh-water hardness range that can allow the optimal survival, growth, and feed conversion for the species. Fish with a mean initial weight of 22 ± 2.84 g were maintained under constant conditions of temperature, pH, alkalinity, and ammonia concentration, and they were fed four times per day with a commercial diet. When evaluating zootechnical performance, only survival (%) was not significantly different among treatments. For the other variablesweight gain, feed conversion, and specific growth ratethe best results were found in the treatment with 15% salinity (control). Blood glucose levels in animals maintained at 15% salinity (control) were significantly lower than those observed in the other treatments. Histological analyses corroborated the zootechnical data, potentially indicating stress in fish maintained at very low and very high water hardness. In conclusion, for cultivating juvenile mullets in fresh water, the most suitable hardness value was 250 mg L-1 CaCO3, because the best final weight of fish was achieved in that condition.(AU)

The work aimed at determining the effects of applying different blends between liquid molasses and agricultural limestone on water quality and growth performance of Nile tilapia juveniles, Oreochromis niloticus. The study employed 24 indoor tanks of 100 L and 24 outdoor tanks of 250 L. Four control groups were set up (no product applied, only molasses, only limestone, molasses-limestone blend with 48% limestone but no fish) and two experimental groups (molasses-limestone blends with 32% and 48% molasses), with four replicates each. Over 11 weeks, the water quality was monitored systematically. The 24-h cycle monitoring of temperature, pH, specific conductance, dissolved O2 and total alkalinity were carried out at the 8th week. The blends between molasses and limestone accelerated the dissolution rate of the agricultural limestone in water. The blend containing 48% molasses led to greater increases in water alkalinity and pH in relation to tanks with only limestone applications. However, the molasses-limestone blend applications impaired the Nile tilapia growth performance, especially in the outdoor tanks. While the fish yield was 25.1 g m-3 day-1 in the molasses outdoor tanks, it was equal to 22.8 g m-3 day-1 in the molasses (32%)-limestone units (P<0.05). It has been concluded that the blending between limestone and molasses brings no clear benefits to Nile tilapia's rearing tanks when compared to the limestone-only tanks.

RESUMEN

The most practical and economical way to combat the problems derived from CO2 corrosion (sweet corrosion) is the use of corrosion inhibitors of organic origin. Its main protection mechanism is based on its ability to adsorb on the metal surface, forming a barrier between the metal surface and the aggressive medium. However, despite its excellent performance, its inhibition efficiency can be compromised with the increase in temperature as well as the shear stresses. In this study, the use of an inorganic inhibitor is proposed that has not been considered as an inhibitor of sweet corrosion. The reported studies are based on using LaCl3 as a corrosion inhibitor. Its behavior was evaluated on 1018 carbon steel using electrochemical measurements, such as potentiodynamic polarization curves, open-circuit potential measurements, linear polarization resistance measurements, and electrochemical impedance. The results showed an inhibition efficiency of the sweet corrosion process greater than 95%, and that the inhibition mechanism was different from the classic corrosion process in CO2-free electrolytes. In this case, it was observed that the inhibitory capacity of the La3+ cations is based on a CO2-capture process and the precipitation of a barrier layer of lanthanum carbonate (La2(CO3)3).
