Background: Predicting large for gestational age newborns is a medical action that requires technological tools with proven efficiency. Objective: To determine the predictive ability of biparietal diameter in large newborns for gestational age. Methodology: Retrospective cohort study that included 1959 Cuban pregnant women with a singleton pregnancy, with recruitment and pregnancy term between January 2009 and December 2017. In each gestational trimester, trophic conditions appropriate for gestational age (GAW) were compared and large for gestational age (GA) using central tendency (mean) and dispersion (range, standard deviation) statistics corresponding to the biparietal diameter. The 95% confidence interval (CI) for mean biparietal diameter difference was also calculated. In addition, an analysis of ROC curves was performed to determine if biparietal diameter and fetal weight predict large trophic condition for gestational age in the second and third gestational trimester. Data were gathered from the health area genetics registry book. Results: Biparietal diameter in the second and third trimester of gestation had an area under curve of 0.60 (95% CI: 0.54-0.65) and 0.59 (95% CI: 0.54-0.64) respectively. The established cut-off points (T2: 56.55 mm, T3: 81.55 mm) have a specificity and accuracy greater than 78%. Conclusions: Biparietal diameter and the Shepard and Hadlock V regression models showed ability to discriminate large for gestational age birth from adequate for gestational age birth from the second trimester of gestation onward, being more effective in the third trimester.

Ultrasonographic examination of pregnant ewes can enable the identification of perinatal abnormalities and establish prenatal assistance responsible for minimizing morbidity and perinatal mortality. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the feasibility of a fetal biometric analysis by ultrasonography to predict neonatal vitality and lamb growth during the first month of life. A longitudinal study was conducted with 13 healthy ewes, subjected to ultrasonographic examination every 15 days from 60th day of pregnancy until lambing, evaluating thoracic diameter, abdominal diameter, biparietal diameter, humerus, femur and placentome length. At birth, 22 lambs were assessed through Apgar score at 5 minutes and after 1 hour. Measurement of body weight was also carried out immediately at birth and weekly during 30 days after birth. Thoracic diameter showed a significant increase between 91-105 days and 121-135 days. Conversely, abdominal diameter had a progressive growth until 106-120 days, and then, a steady development was observed. Biparietal diameter showed progressive growth only towards days 91 and 105. For the humerus length, we verified a significant increase between 106-120 days and 121-135 days, remaining unaltered onwards; while femur length continued to grow until lambing. The linear regression analysis between birth weight and biparietal diameter at 60-75 days was high (R2=0.96; P<0.0001; coefficient of variability of 3.3%). In conclusion, ultrasonographic analysis of fetal biparietal diameter at mid-pregnancy can be used as a predictor of lamb weight at birth. Moreover, assessment of femur length at final pregnancy can be employed for fetal and neonatal development estimation.

BACKGROUND: There is a concern about conservation of endangered species today. Among this species, the Leontopithecus (Lesson, 1840) is outstanding. Its population has been whirling reduced. So far the reproductive physiology of Leontopithecus has few studies, it is fundamental requisite to preserve this species. Obstetric sonography has become an essential method in reproductive management of primates. METHOD: This method is very helpful to detect early pregnancy and evaluate some deficiency of fetal growth. In this study, 14 pregnancies were monitored using real-time abdominal sonography. During each evaluation, the number of fetus was recorded, gestational sac and heart beats were observed, and biparietal diameter was measured. RESULTS: The results showed that abdominal sonography is a reliable method for observation of gross morphological changes during pre-natal development and to estimate gestational age. No statistically differences were observed between twins and singletons. This study is the first investigation of pre-natal growth in Leontopithecus.

OBJECTIVE: To establish reference charts for fetal biometric parameters in a non-selected risk population from Uberaba, Southeast of Brazil. METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was performed among 5656 non-selected risk singleton pregnant women between 14 and 41 weeks of gestation. The ultrasound exams were performed during routine visits of second and third trimesters. Biparietal diameter (BPD) was measured at the level of the thalami and cavum septi pellucidi. Head circumference (HC) was calculated by the following formula: HC = 1.62*(BPD + occipital frontal diameter, OFD). Abdominal circumference (AC) was measured using the following formula: AC = (anteroposterior diameter + transverse abdominal diameter) × 1.57. Femur diaphysis length (FDL) was obtained in the longest axis of femur without including the distal femoral epiphysis. The estimated fetal weight (EFW) was obtained by the Hadlock formula. Polynomial regressions were performed to obtain the best-fit model for each fetal biometric parameter as the function of gestational age (GA). RESULTS: The mean, standard deviations (SD), minimum and maximum of BPD (cm), HC (cm), AC (cm), FDL (cm) and EFW (g) were 6.9 ± 1.9 (2.3 - 10.5), 24.51 ± 6.61 (9.1 - 36.4), 22.8 ± 7.3 (7.5 - 41.1), 4.9 ± 1.6 (1.2 - 8.1) and 1365 ± 1019 (103 - 4777), respectively. Second-degree polynomial regressions between the evaluated parameters and GA resulted in the following formulas: BPD = -4.044 + 0.540 × GA - 0.0049 × GA2 (R2 = 0.97); HC= -15.420 + 2.024 GA - 0.0199 × GA2 (R2 = 0.98); AC = -9.579 + 1.329 × GA - 0.0055 × GA2 (R2 = 0.97); FDL = -3.778 + 0.416 × GA - 0.0035 × GA2 (R2 = 0.98) and EFW = 916 - 123 × GA + 4.70 × GA2 (R2 = 0.96); respectively. CONCLUSION: Reference charts for the fetal biometric parameters in a non-selected risk population from Uberaba, Southeast of Brazil, were established.
Introduction: folic acid consumption represents a health problem worldwide, while several congenital defects are considerable as preventable with enough level of folic acid in mothers. Objective: to show the effects of acid folic over some morphometrical variables in newborn Wistar rats. Material and method: an experimental analytic study was carried out in 116 newborn Wistar rats. The variables used are: tail length, biparietal diameter, and body mass. Five groups of two rat each were made up: one target group and four groups treated with folic acid, taking into account dosis and gestation time; the measuring were made on the first and third day after the rats’ birth. The variable analysis were carried out by the calculation of the mean and stadard deviations, and for comparisson of the average numbers a level of significance α ≤0,05 were used. Results: the measuring of the tail length showed statistical significance (P<0.05) when the target group and the treated groups were compared, the variables biparietal diameter and body mass did not present any statistical significance despite the fact that the measures of the variable body mass in the treated groups were higher than in the target group. Conclusions: the need for acid folic supply before and during gestation in Wistar rats was proved, due to its influence as cofactor during the fetal life, stimulating the secretion of any of the growing factors during the postnatal life.
RESUMEN
OBJECTIVES: To create reference charts for fetal age assessment based on fetal sonographic biometry in a population of pregnant women living in the third largest city in Colombia and compare them with charts included in ultrasound machines. METHODS: The study data were obtained from women with a single pregnancy and confirmed gestational age between 12 and 40 completed weeks. All women were recruited specifically for the study, and every fetus was measured only once for biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length. Polynomial regression models for gestational age as a function of each fetal measurement were fitted to estimate the mean and standard deviation. Percentile curves of gestational age were constructed for each fetal measurement using these regression models. RESULTS: Biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length were measured in 792 fetuses. Tables and charts of gestational age were derived for each fetal parameter. A cubic polynomial model was the best-fitted regression model to describe the relationships between gestational age and each fetal measurement. The standard deviation was estimated by simple linear regression as a function of each fetal measurement. Comparison of our gestational age mean z scores with those calculated by reference equations showed statistically significant differences (P < .01). CONCLUSIONS: We present a set of reference charts, tables, and formulas for fetal age assessment based on fetal sonographic biometry. The results support the recommendation that these charts and tables could be more appropriate for assessing fetal age in Colombian populations than those currently included in the software of ultrasound machines.

OBJECTIVES: To create reference charts for fetal sonographic biometric measurements in a population of pregnant women living in the third largest city in Colombia and compare them with charts included in ultrasound machines. METHODS: The data were obtained from women with a single pregnancy and confirmed gestational (menstrual) age between 12 and 40 weeks. All women were recruited specifically for the study, and every fetus was measured only once for biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference, and femur length. Raw data for each fetal measurement were modeled by fitting regression models separately to estimate the mean and standard deviation as a function of gestational age. Percentile curves were constructed for each measurement by gestational age using these two regression models. We compared our mean z scores with those expected by reference equations. RESULTS: Measurements were obtained for 792 fetuses. A cubic polynomial model was the best-fitted regression model to describe the relationships between each fetal measurement and gestational age. The standard deviation for each measurement was estimated by simple linear regression as a function of gestational age. Comparison of our mean z scores with those by reference equations showed significant differences in some fetal measurements (P < .01). CONCLUSIONS: We present a set of reference percentile charts, tables, and formulas for fetal biometric measurements from a Colombian population. We believe that our fetal charts could be used nationwide in Colombia; nevertheless, a national sample will contribute to their validation and promotion of the development of Colombian fetal size charts.

The objective of this work was to describe in 27 pacas (Cuniculus paca Linnaeus, 1766) at 30, 60 and 90 days (D) of pregnancy diagnosed by ultrasonography (U.S.) the cell types of the vaginal epithelium by vaginal smears, to report the vulva opening condition and the characteristics of vaginal mucus, to determine the progesterone (P4) serum concentration by radioimmunoassay, and also measure by ultrasound (U.S.) the fetuses biparietal diameter (BPD) at 60 and 90 days of pregnancy. At D30, 40% of the smears exhibited surface cells (with estrogenic characteristics) and of naked nuclei. At D60 and D90, parabasal, intermediate, superficial, and navicular cells were present in the same proportions, but endocervical cells were described in only 73.9% and 69% of those day's smears, respectively. At D30 the highest proportion of navicular and surface cells differed (p < 0.05) compared with other cell types. The vaginal mucus was crystalline and fluid in 100% and 70% of females at D30 and D60, respectively. It was observed the vaginal vestibule open in around 50% of females in every day of exams. Minimum detectable P4 serum concentration was obtained on 72% and 83% of females, while the averages of the BPD were 1.25 cm (± 0.16) and 2.34 cm (± 0.25) on D60 and D90, respectively. Vaginal cytology aspects at D30, D60 and D90 and BPD provide elements to contribute to pregnancy diagnosis in paca. P4 concentration shows the need of further endocrinology of pregnancy studies of paca.

Dogs head dimentions show consistent variability for their dimentions, such as length, width (biparietal diameter) and height, according to anatomical classification in: braquicephalic, mesaticephalic and dolicocephalic. Since there are attempts to standardize values that characterize canine pregnancy, those architectonic features must be considered. The aim of this study is to use ultrasonography scanning examinations to correlate the fetals head dimentions and gestational age in order to contribute to the intra uterine development comparative study of the dog head. Serial ultrasonographic examinations were performed in 10 pregnant Boxers biches, 2 or 3 times per week from18o day of gestation until the whelping, the used device was a portableGE®, Logic 100 MP, equipped with a sectorial transducer 5,0 MHzand another linear one of 7,5 MHz. Biparietal diameter (DBP), length(CC) and width (HC) of the fetal head had been measured since the opportunity that was possible to distinguish fetal head from fetal body, until the end of gestation. Such informations had been located in graphics of dispertion of the mensuration in function of the number of days before parturition. It was concluded that the mensurations of selected parameters were consistent among studied gestations and hightly correlated among them and with the parturition day. The parameter DBP was the most technically easier to be gauged.(AU)
