Introduction: Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease comprising various molecular subtypes, including Luminal A, Luminal B, human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2) positive, and triple negative types, each with distinct biological characteristics and behaviors. Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains a particularly challenging subtype worldwide. Our study aims to evaluate whether Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) parameters, clinical pathological features, and biochemical indicators serve as prognostic risk factors for TNBC. Additionally, we explore correlations between biochemical indicators and 18F-FDG PET/CT parameters. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 95 TNBC patients who underwent preoperative 18F-FDG PET/CT examinations at Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital from 2013 to 2018. Collected data included 18F-FDG PET/CT parameters, clinical and pathological features, and biochemical indicators. We used Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and multivariate Cox regression analysis to evaluate associations between 18F-FDG PET/CT parameters/biochemical indicators and disease free survival (DFS)/overall survival (OS). The log-rank test determined significant differences in survival curves, and the Spearman correlation coefficient analyzed correlations between quantitative variables. Visualization and analysis were performed using R packages. Results: Among 95 TNBC patients, mean standardized uptake value (SUVmean) was significantly correlated with DFS. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), α- L-fucosylase (AFU) and Creatine kinase (CK) were independent predictors of DFS, while Precursor albumin (PALB) and CK were independent predictors of OS. FBG showed correlations with SUVpeak and SUVmean, and CK was correlated with peak standardized uptake value (SUVpeak). Our results indicated that 18F-FDG PET/CT parameters and biochemical indicators may constitute a new prognostic model for TNBC patients post-surgery. Discussion: We found that SUVmean, FBG, AFU and CK are predictive factors for DFS in TNBC patients post-surgery, while PALB and CK are predictive factors for OS, which prompts us to pay more attention to these indicators in clinical practice. Also 18F-FDG PET/CT parameters and biochemical indicators have potential utility in constituting a new prognostic model for TNBC patients post-surgery.

Sorghum is the world's fifth-largest cereal crop, and anthracnose (Colletotrichum sublineola) is the main disease affecting sorghum. However, systematic research on the cellular structure, physiological and biochemical, and genes related to anthracnose resistance and disease resistance evaluation in sorghum is lacking in the field. Upon inoculation with anthracnose (C. sublineola) spores, disease-resistant sorghum (gz93) developed a relative lesion area (RLA) that was significantly smaller than that of the disease-susceptible sorghum (gz234). The leaf thickness, length and profile area of leaf mesophyll cells, upper and lower epidermal cells decreased in the lesion area, with a greater reduction observed in gz234 than in gz93. The damage caused by C. sublineola resulted in a greater decrease in the net photosynthetic rate (Pn) in gz234 than in gz93, with early-stage reduction due to stomatal limitation and late-stage reduction caused by lesions. Overall, the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), the content of proline (Pro), abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonic acid (JA), salicylic acid (SA), and gibberellic acid (GA3), are higher in gz93 than in gz234 and may be positively correlated with disease resistance. While malondialdehyde (MDA) may be negatively correlated with disease resistance. Disease-resistant genes are significantly overexpressed in gz93, with significant expression changes in gz234, which is related to disease resistance in sorghum. Correlation analysis indicates that GA3, MDA, peroxidase (POD), and disease-resistance genes can serve as reference indicators for disease severity. The regression equation RLA = 0.029 + 8.02 × 10-6 JA-0.016 GA3 can predict and explain RLA. Principal component analysis (PCA), with the top 5 principal components for physiological and biochemical indicators and the top 2 principal components for disease-resistant genes, can explain 82.37% and 89.11% of their total variance, reducing the number of evaluation indicators. This study provides a basis for research on the mechanisms and breeding of sorghum with resistance to anthracnose.

Objective: The study aimed to explore the correlation between retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) with blood biochemical indicators and cognitive dysfunction in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and the possible mechanism, thereby providing more theoretical basis for the occurrence and prevention of diabetes related complications. Methods: Eighty T2DM patients treated in our hospital from March 2022 to September 2022 were selected as the study subjects, and the clinical data of the patients were retrospectively analyzed. All patients underwent fundus fluorescein angiography (FFA) to analyze the changes in retinal blood vessels. Patients who met the inclusion criteria were divided as the diabetic retinopathy (DR) group (n=46) and simple diabetes group (n=34). The RNFLT, blood biochemical indexes and changes in cognitive functions of the patients were detected. The correlation between RNFLT with blood biochemical indexes and cognitive dysfunction was analyzed. Results: Compared with the simple diabetes group, patients in the DR group had much lower mean, nasal, inferior and superior thicknesses (P<0.01). There existed no significant difference in blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), blood lipids (triglycerides, cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein) between the two groups (P>0.05). Compared with the simple diabetes group, patients in the DR group had much higher fasting blood glucose (FBG), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), fasting insulin (FINS), insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index, apolipoprotein B (ApoB)/apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) (P<0.001). Besides, the DR group had sharply lower scores on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scale and higher levels of the Trail Making Test-A (TMT-A) and TMT-B (P<0.001). Spearman correlation analysis confirmed that the mean RNFLT was negatively correlated with the levels of FBG, HbA1c, HOMA-IR index, TMT-A and TMT-B (P<0.05), positively correlated with the score of mini-mental state examination (MMSE) (P<0.05), and was no significant correlation with FINS and ApoB/ApoA1 (P>0.05). Conclusion: DR patients had significantly reduced RNFLT, elevated levels of blood glucose related indicators, and cognitive dysfunction. There existed a correlation between RNFLT and FBG, HbA1c, HOMA-IR index, TMT-A, TMT-B and MMSE.

The aim of this study was to analyze the resistance genes and molecular mechanisms involved in rice blast infection. The contents of seven hormones and eight biochemical indicators in the leaves and spikes were at dynamic levels after inoculation with rice blast strains over time. The mRNA and protein expression of the six genes were consistent with the transcriptome analysis results. In addition, KEGG enrichment analysis showed that Os03g0132000, Os06g0215600, and Os06g0215500 were significantly enriched in the alpha-linolenic acid metabolism KEGG pathway, whereas Os05g0311801 was significantly enriched in the zeatin biosynthesis KEGG pathway. Furthermore, Os03g0180900 and Os09g0439200 were significantly enriched in the plant hormone signal transduction KEGG pathways. Therefore, blast infection could alter the hormones, biochemical indicators, and traits of rice. Moreover, genes including Os03g0132000, Os03g0180900, and Os05g0311801 were identified as rice blast resistance genes, and the mechanism might involve alpha-linolenic acid metabolism, zeatin biosynthesis, and plant hormone signal transduction KEGG pathways.

Serum biochemical indicators serve as vital proxies that reflect the physiological state and functions of different organs. The genetic parameters and molecular mechanisms underlying serum biochemical indicators of sheep (Ovis aries) have not been well understood. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to identify the genetic architecture and genomic loci underlying ten serum biochemical indicators in sheep, including alanine transaminase, aspartate transferase, lactate dehydrogenase, cholesterol, glucose, phosphorus, calcium, creatinine, urea and total protein levels. We implemented genetic parameter estimations and GWASs for each trait in 422 Akkaraman lambs. Overall, low to moderate heritability estimates were found in the range of 0.14-0.55. Additionally, low to high genetic correlations were observed among traits. In total, 23 SNP loci were associated with serum biochemical indicators leading to 19 genes. These were SPTA1, MGST2, CACUL1, IGFBP7, PARD3, PHB1, SLC15A5, TRIM35, RGS6, NUP93, CNTNAP2, SLC7A11, B3GALT5, DPP10, HST2ST1, NRP1, LRP1B, MAP3K9 and ENSOARG00020040484.1, as well as LOC101103187, LOC101117162, LOC105611309 and LOC101118029. To our knowledge, these data provide the first associations between SPTA1 and serum cholesterol and between ENSOARG00020040484.1 and serum glucose. The current findings provide a comprehensive inventory of the relationships between serum biochemical parameters, genetic variants and disease-relevant characteristics. This information may facilitate the identification of therapeutic targets and fluid biomarkers and establish a strong framework for comprehending the pathobiology of complex diseases as well as providing targets for sheep genetic improvement programs.

Introduction: Rhabdomyolysis, as an acute stage of myopathy, causes kidney damage. It is known that this pathology is caused by the accumulation of muscle breakdown products and is associated with oxidative stress. Therefore, the present study evaluated the effect of intraperitoneal administration (dose 1 mg/kg) of water-soluble C60 fullerenes, as powerful antioxidants, on the development of rat kidney damage due to rhabdomyolysis caused by mechanical trauma of the muscle soleus of different severity (crush syndrome lasting 1 min under a pressure of 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5 kg/cm2, respectively). Methods: Using tensometry, biochemical and histopathological analyses, the biomechanical parameters of muscle soleus contraction (contraction force and integrated muscle power), biochemical indicators of rat blood (concentrations of creatinine, creatine phosphokinase, urea and hydrogen peroxide, catalase and superoxide dismutase activity), glomerular filtration rate and fractional sodium excretion value, as well as pathohistological and morphometric features of muscle and kidney damages in rats on days 1, 3, 6 and 9 after the initiation of the injury were studied. Results: Positive changes in biomechanical and biochemical parameters were found during the experiment by about 27-30 ± 2%, as well as a decrease in pathohistological and morphometric features of muscle and kidney damages in rats treated with water-soluble C60 fullerenes. Conclusion: These findings indicate the potential application of water-soluble C60 fullerenes in the treatment of pathological conditions of the muscular system caused by rhabdomyolysis and the associated oxidative stress.

Background: Blood counts and biochemical markers are among the most common tests performed in hospitals and most readily accepted by patients, and are widely regarded as reliable biomarkers in the literature. The aim of this study was to assess the causal relationship between blood counts, biochemical indicators and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Methods: A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was performed to assess the causal relationship between blood counts and biochemical indicators with PAH. The genome-wide association study (GWAS) for blood counts and biochemical indicators were obtained from the UK Biobank (UKBB), while the GWAS for PAH were sourced from the FinnGen Biobank. Inverse variance weighting (IVW) was used as the primary analysis method, supplemented by three sensitivity analyses to assess the robustness of the results. And we conducted an observational study using data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003-2018 to verify the relationship. Results: The MR analysis primarily using the IVW method revealed genetic variants of platelet count (OR=2.51, 95% CI 1.56-4.22, P<0.001), platelet crit(OR=1.87, 95% CI1.17-7.65, P=0.022), direct bilirubin (DBIL)(OR=1.71, 95%CI 1.18-2.47,P=0.004), insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1)(OR=0.51, 95% CI 0.27-0.96, P=0.038), Lipoprotein A (Lp(a))(OR=0.66, 95% CI 0.45-0.98, P=0.037) and total bilirubin (TBIL)(OR=0.51, 95% CI 0.27-0.96, P=0.038) were significantly associated with PAH. In NHANES, multivariate logistic regression analyses revealed a significant positive correlation between platelet count and volume and the risk of PAH, and a significant negative correlation between total bilirubin and PAH. Conclusion: Our study reveals a causal relationship between blood counts, biochemical indicators and pulmonary arterial hypertension. These findings offer novel insights into the etiology and pathological mechanisms of PAH, and emphasizes the important value of these markers as potential targets for the prevention and treatment of PAH.

Muscle trauma is one of the most common body injuries. Severe consequences of muscle trauma are ischemic injuries of the extremities. It is known that the intensification of free radical processes takes place in almost most acute diseases and conditions, including muscle trauma. C60 fullerene (C60) with powerful antioxidant properties can be considered a potential nanoagent for developing an effective therapy for skeletal muscle trauma. Here the water-soluble C60 was prepared and its structural organization has been studied by the atomic force microscopy and dynamic light scattering techniques. The selective biomechanical parameters of muscle soleus contraction and biochemical indicators of blood in rats were evaluated after intramuscular injection of C60 1 h before the muscle trauma initiation. Analysis of the force muscle response after C60 injection (1 mg kg-1 dose) showed its protective effect against ischemia and mechanical injury at the level of 30 ± 2 % and 17 ± 1 %, accordingly, relative to the pathology group. Analysis of biomechanical parameters that are responsible for correcting precise positioning confirmed the effectiveness of C60 at a level of more than 50 ± 3 % relative to the pathology group. Moreover, a decrease in the biochemical indicators of blood by about 33 ± 2 % and 10 ± 1 % in ischemia and mechanical injury, correspondingly, relative to the pathology group occurs. The results obtained demonstrate the ability of C60 to correct the functional activity of damaged skeletal muscle.

The cold tolerance of Litopenaeus vannamei is important for breeding in specific areas. To explore the cold tolerance mechanism of L. vannamei, this study analyzed biochemical indicators, cell apoptosis, and metabolomic responses in cold-tolerant (Lv-T) and common (Lv-C) L. vannamei under low-temperature stress (18 °C and 10 °C). TUNEL analysis showed a significant increase in apoptosis of hepatopancreatic duct cells in L. vannamei under low-temperature stress. Biochemical analysis showed that Lv-T had significantly increased levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and triglycerides (TG), while alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH-L), and uric acid (UA) levels were significantly decreased compared to Lv-C (p < 0.05). Metabolomic analysis displayed significant increases in metabolites such as LysoPC (P-16:0), 11beta-Hydroxy-3,20-dioxopregn-4-en-21-oic acid, and Pirbuterol, while metabolites such as 4-Hydroxystachydrine, Oxolan-3-one, and 3-Methyldioxyindole were significantly decreased in Lv-T compared to Lv-C. The differentially regulated metabolites were mainly enriched in pathways such as Protein digestion and absorption, Central carbon metabolism in cancer and ABC transporters. Our study indicate that low temperature induces damage to the hepatopancreatic duct of shrimp, thereby affecting its metabolic function. The cold resistance mechanism of Lv-T L. vannamei may be due to the enhancement of antioxidant enzymes and lipid metabolism.

Spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have emerged as a major source of waste due to their low recovery rate. The physical disposal of spent LIBs can lead to the leaching of their contents into the surrounding environment. While it is widely agreed that hazardous substances such as nickel and cobalt in the leachate can pose a threat to the environment and human health, the overall composition and toxicity of LIB leachate remain unclear. In this study, a chemical analysis of leachate from spent LIBs was conducted to identify its primary constituents. The ecotoxicological parameters of the model organism, rotifer Brachionus asplanchnoidis, were assessed to elucidate the toxicity of the LIB leachate. Subsequent experiments elucidated the impacts of the LIB leachate and its representative components on the malondialdehyde (MDA) level, antioxidant capacity, and enzyme activity of B. asplanchnoidis. The results indicate that both the LIB leachate and its components are harmful to individual rotifers due to the adverse effects of stress-induced disturbances in biochemical indicators, posing a threat to population development. The intensified poisoning phenomenon under combined stress suggests the presence of complex synergistic effects among the components of LIB leachate. Due to the likely environmental and biological hazards, LIBs should be strictly managed after disposal. Additionally, more economical and eco-friendly recycling and treatment technologies need to be developed and commercialized.

In order to cope with the limited supply of feed for global animal production, there is a pressing need to explore alternative feed resources. Orange pulp, a by-product of agriculture and industry, has shown potential to positively or neutrally impact pig productive performance when included in their diet. However, there is a lack of research on the effects of fermented navel orange pulp (FNOP) on pig growth and productive performance. This study aimed to investigate the effects of FNOP as a dry matter substitute on pig's growth performance, carcass characteristics, meat quality, meat nutritional value, and serum biochemical indicators. The experiment involved 128 finishing Tibetan pigs, divided into four feed treatment groups, with varying levels (0%, 5%, 10% and 15%) of FNOP replacing dry matter in the basal diet. The results indicate that substituting 5% to 15% FNOP had no adverse effects on pig growth performance. However, at a 15% substitution rate, there was a decrease in serum growth hormone and IGF-1 levels, along with an increase in the feed-to-gain ratio. A 10% FNOP replacement notably increased the loin-eye muscle area of pigs. Additionally, 5% and 10% FNOP substitutions reduced the drip loss of pork. The study also found that substituting 5% to 15% FNOP increased unsaturated fatty acids and umami nucleotide contents in pork and raised serum total protein and uric acid (nucleotide-metabolism-related product) levels. These findings suggest that moderate FNOP substitution might improve meat quality, nutritional value, and maintain growth and productive performance in Tibetan pigs by improving protein synthesis and nucleotide metabolism, while also reducing feed costs. The optimal substitution ratio identified was 10%.

OBJECTIVE: Osteoporosis (OS) is a systemic bone disease characterized by low bone mass and bone microstructure damage. This study. METHODS: According to the T value, 88 elderly fracture patients were grouped as the control group (without OS, 43 cases) and observation group (with T value <-2.5, which could be diagnosed as OS, 45 cases). The content of boney containing protein (BGP), total type 1 collagen amino terminal extender peptide (TPINP), ß-Crosslaps (ß-CTX), parathyroid hormone (PTH) and insulin-like growth factors-1 (IGF-1) was compared. Multivariate logistic regression was adopted to analyze the correlation between biochemical indexes and the occurrence of senile OS fracture and the related risk factors. The diagnostic value in the elderly was analyzed by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. RESULTS: The levels of BGP, TPINP, ß-CTX, PTH and IGF-1 were elevated, and the level of IGF-1 was decreased in the observation group compared with the control group (P < 0.05). The elevated content of BGP, TPINP, ß-CTX and PTH, and the decreased expression of IGF-1 were influencing factors for OS fractures in the elderly (P < 0.05). The sensitivity and specificity to predict the occurrence of OS fractures in the elderly were 91.70% and 90.50%, respectively. The AUC of combined detection was 0.976 (95% CI: 0.952-1.000), which was memorably higher than single indicator detection (P < 0.05). Among 45 patients, 32 cases had good prognosis and 13 had poor prognosis. In comparison with the good prognosis group, the content of BGP, TPINP, ß-CTX and PTH were sensibly higher, the level of IGF-1 was prominently lower, and the proportion of fracture history was much higher in poor prognosis group (P < 0.05). Fracture history, BGP, TPINP, ß-CTX, PTH and IGF-1 were independent risk factors for poor prognosis of elderly OS fractures (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Bone metabolism factors were associated with poor prognosis of OS in the elderly. The combined detection had higher diagnostic value in calculating the risk of OS fracture in the elderly than single indicator detection.

The onset of osteoporosis is subtle, early detection is challenging, and population-wide screening is infeasible. Thus, there is a need to develop a method to identify those at high risk for osteoporosis. Objective: This study aimed to develop a machine learning algorithm to effectively identify people with low bone density, using readily available demographic and blood biochemical data. Methods: Using NHANES 2017-2020 data, participants over 50 years old with complete femoral neck BMD data were selected. This cohort was randomly divided into training (70%) and test (30%) sets. Lasso regression selected variables for inclusion in six machine learning models built on the training data: logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), gradient boosting machine (GBM), naive Bayes (NB), artificial neural network (ANN) and random forest (RF). NHANES data from the 2013-2014 cycle was used as an external validation set input into the models to verify their generalizability. Model discrimination was assessed via AUC, accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, precision and F1 score. Calibration curves evaluated goodness-of-fit. Decision curves determined clinical utility. The SHAP framework analyzed variable importance. Results: A total of 3,545 participants were included in the internal validation set of this study, of whom 1870 had normal bone density and 1,675 had low bone density Lasso regression selected 19 variables. In the test set, AUC was 0.785 (LR), 0.780 (SVM), 0.775 (GBM), 0.729 (NB), 0.771 (ANN), and 0.768 (RF). The LR model has the best discrimination and a better calibration curve fit, the best clinical net benefit for the decision curve, and it also reflects good predictive power in the external validation dataset The top variables in the LR model were: age, BMI, gender, creatine phosphokinase, total cholesterol and alkaline phosphatase. Conclusion: The machine learning model demonstrated effective classification of low BMD using blood biomarkers. This could aid clinical decision making for osteoporosis prevention and management.

Objective: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common and potentially fatal sleep disorder. The purpose of this study was to construct an objective and easy-to-promote model based on common clinical biochemical indicators and demographic data for OSA screening. Methods: The study collected the clinical data of patients who were referred to the Sleep Medicine Center of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Fujian Medical University from December 1, 2020, to July 31, 2023, including data for demographics, polysomnography (PSG), and 30 biochemical indicators. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to compare the differences between groups, and the Boruta method was used to analyze the importance of the predictors. We selected and compared 10 predictors using 4 machine learning algorithms which were "Gaussian Naive Bayes (GNB)", "Support Vector Machine (SVM)", "K Neighbors Classifier (KNN)", and "Logistic Regression (LR)". Finally, the optimal algorithm was selected to construct the final prediction model. Results: Among all the predictors of OSA, body mass index (BMI) showed the best predictive efficacy with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) = 0.699; among the predictors of biochemical indicators, triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index represented the best predictive performance (AUC = 0.656). The LR algorithm outperformed the 4 established machine learning (ML) algorithms, with an AUC (F1 score) of 0.794 (0.841), 0.777 (0.827), and 0.732 (0.788) in the training, validation, and testing cohorts, respectively. Conclusion: We have constructed an efficient OSA screening tool. The introduction of biochemical indicators in ML-based prediction models can provide a reference for clinicians in determining whether patients with suspected OSA need PSG.

BACKGROUND: To analyze the relationship between lipid metabolism, coagulation function, and bone metabolism and the contributing factor and staging of non-traumatic femoral head necrosis, and to further investigate the factors influencing the blood indicators related to the staging of non-traumatic femoral head necrosis. METHODS: The medical records of patients with femoral head necrosis were retrieved from the inpatient medical record management system, and the lipid metabolism, bone metabolism, and coagulation indices of non-traumatic femoral head necrosis (including alcoholic, hormonal, and idiopathic group) were obtained according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, including Low-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Non-High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Apolipoprotein A1, Apolipoprotein (B), Apolipoprotein (E), Uric Acid, Alkaline Phosphatase, Bone-specific Alkaline Phosphatase, Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time, Prothrombin Time, D-dimer, Platelet count. The relationship between these blood indices and the different stages under different causative factors was compared, and the factors influencing the stages of non-traumatic femoral head necrosis were analyzed using multivariate logistic regression. RESULTS: (i) Gender, Age and BMI stratification, Low-density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Triglycerides, Non-High-density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Apolipoprotein (B), Apolipoprotein (E), Uric Acid, Bone-specific Alkaline Phosphatase, Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time, Plasminogen Time, D-dimer, and Platelet count of the alcohol group were statistically different when compared among the different ARCO staging groups; (ii) The differences in Age and BMI stratification, Triglycerides, Non-High-density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Apolipoprotein A1, Apolipoprotein B, Apolipoprotein E, Uric Acid, Bone-specific Alkaline Phosphatase, Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time, Plasminogen Time, D-dimer, and Platelet count were statistically significant when compared among the different phases in the hormone group (P < 0.05); (iii) The differences in Age and BMI stratification, Non-High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Apolipoprotein A1, Apolipoprotein (B), Apolipoprotein (E), Uric Acid, Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time, D-dimer, and Platelet count were statistically significant when compared among the different stages in the idiopathic group (P < 0.05); (v) Statistically significant indicators were included in the multivariate logistic regression analysis, excluding the highly correlated bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, and the results showed that Low-density lipoprotein was negatively correlated with changes in the course of ARCO, and Non-High-Density Lipoprotein cholesterol, Apo B, Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time, and Platelet count were significantly and positively correlated with disease progression. CONCLUSION: An abnormal hypercoagulable state as well as an abnormal hyperlipidemic state are risk factors for the progression of non-traumatic femoral head necrosis under various exposure factors, as indicated by Non-High-Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol, Apolipoprotein B, Activated Fractional Thromboplastin Time, and Platelet Counts.

This descriptive study determined whether winter swimming (WS) and outdoor amateur running (RUN) affect blood morphological and biochemical indicators in men during midseason winter swimming from November to April. There were three groups of participants, with 10 male amateurs each: RUN + WS, WS, and control. The research was performed in the middle of the winter swimming season of 2020/2021. This time period was chosen in consideration of the respondents' adaptation to winter conditions. The study involved only 10 male amateurs in each study group owing to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, which confined people to their homes. In the RUN + WS group compared with the WS group, significant decreases in the mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (within standard limits) (p = 0.04) and platelet distribution width (p = 0.006) were observed, with a significant increase in the red blood cell distribution width (p = 0.008) (within standard limits). The renal function, as expressed by the estimated glomerular filtration rate, was higher in the RUN + WS group (p = 0.02) (within standard limits) compared with the WS group, and the uric acid concentration was reduced (p = 0.01). In the RUN + WS group compared with the control group, significant decreases in the leukocyte count (p = 0.02) (within standard limits), monocyte count (p = 0.04) (within standard limits), and platelet distribution width (p = 0.005) were reported. The remaining indicators presented a p-value > 0.05. The two investigated forms of physical activity had no negative effect on blood morphological or biochemical indicators in male amateurs during the winter swimming midseason.

BACKGROUND: Traditional biochemical screening for neonatal inherited metabolic diseases has high false-positive rates and low positive predictive values, which are not conducive to early diagnosis and increase parents' anxiety. This study analysed the relationship between gene variant carriers and their biochemical indicators in traditional biochemical screening, aiming to find explanations for false positives in newborns. RESULTS: This retrospective study included 962 newborns. Newborns underwent traditional biochemical screening at birth using blood staining and genomic sequencing of their stored blood staining using the NeoSeq Pro panel, which was able to detect 154 pathogenic genes and 86 diseases. A total of 632 newborns were carriers of gene variants. 56% of congenital hypothyroidism carriers had higher thyroid-stimulating hormone levels than normal newborns. Abnormal biochemical indices were detected in 71% of carriers of organic acid metabolic diseases, 69% of carriers of amino acid metabolic diseases, and 85% of carriers of fatty acid ß oxidation disorders. In carriers associated with organic acid metabolic diseases, the propionylcarnitine (C3), C3/acetylcarnitine (C2), and methylmalonylcarnitine (C4DC) + 3-hydroxyisovalerylcarnitine (C5OH) levels were higher than those in non-carriers (C3: 4.12 vs. 1.66 µmol/L; C3/C2: 0.15 vs. 0.09; C4DC + C5OH: 0.22 vs. 0.19 µmol/L). In carriers associated with amino acid metabolic diseases, phenylalanine levels were higher than those in non-carriers (68.00 vs. 52.05 µmol/L). For carriers of fatty acid ß oxidation disorders, butyrylcarnitine levels were higher than those in non-carriers (0.31 vs. 0.21 µmol/L), while the free carnitine levels were lower than those in non-carriers (14.65 vs. 21.87 µmol/L). There was a higher occurrence of carriers among newborns who received false-positive results for amino acid metabolic diseases compared to those who received negative results (15.52% vs. 6.71%). Similarly, there was a higher occurrence of carriers among newborns who received false-positive results for fatty acid ß oxidation disorders compared to those who received negative results (28.30% vs. 7.29%). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that the carriers comprised a large number of newborns. Carriers had abnormal biochemical indicators compared with non-carriers, which could explain the false-positive rate for newborns using traditional newborn biochemical screening, especially in amino acid metabolic and fatty acid ß oxidation disorders.

BACKGROUND: Environmental pollution by cadmium (Cd) is currently a common problem in many countries, especially in highly industrialised areas. Cd present in the soil can be absorbed by plants through the root system. AIM: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of cadmium on the metabolic activity of cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.) and the accumulation and distribution of Cd in the organs of the plants. METHODS: Cucumber seeds (3 g) were exposed to 0.76, 1.58 or 4.17 mg Cd/L (applied as CdCl2 solutions). The activity of selected antioxidant enzymes - glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), lipid peroxidation and the content of photosynthetic pigments were determined in 6-week-old cucumber plants. In addition, intake of Cd has been determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (F-AAS). RESULTS: The results show that the applied cadmium concentrations affected the activity of antioxidant enzymes. An increase in CAT activity and a decrease in SOD activity were observed in all cucumber organs analysed. GSH-Px activity increased in the roots and stems. Surprisingly, GSH-Px activity decreased in the leaves. The level of lipid peroxidation was usually unchanged (the only one statistically significant change was a decrease in the concentration of malondialdehyde in the leaves which was observed after exposure to the highest Cd concentration). The applied Cd concentrations had no effect on the content of photosynthetic pigments. The highest cadmium content was found in the roots of cucumber plants. Cd tends to accumulate in the roots and a small amount was translocated to the stems and leaves, which was confirmed with the translocation factor (TF). CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that the range of cadmium concentrations used, corresponding to the level of environmental pollution recorded in Europe, effectively activates the antioxidant enzyme system, without intensifying lipid peroxidation or reducing the content of photosynthetic pigments.

Adversity stress is the main environmental factor limiting plant growth and development, including salt and other stress factors. This study delves into the adaptability and salt tolerance mechanisms of Machilus faberi Hemsl, a species with potential for cultivation in salinized areas. We subjected the plants to various salt concentrations to observe their growth responses and to assess key physiological and biochemical indicators. The results revealed that under high salt concentrations (500 and 700 mmol-1/L), symptoms such as leaf yellowing, wilting, and eventual death were observed. Notably, plant height and shoot growth ceased on the 14th day of exposure. Chlorophyll content (a, b, total a + b, and the a/b ratio) initially increased but subsequently decreased under varying levels of salt stress. Similarly, the net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, leaf water content, and root activity significantly declined under these conditions. Moreover, we observed an increase in malondialdehyde levels and relative conductivity, indicative of cellular damage and stress. The activity of superoxide dismutase and ascorbate peroxidase initially increased and then diminished with prolonged stress, whereas peroxidase activity consistently increased. Levels of proline and soluble protein exhibited an upward trend, contrasting with the fluctuating pattern of soluble sugars, which decreased initially but increased subsequently. In conclusion, M. faberi exhibits a degree of tolerance to salt stress, albeit with growth limitations when concentrations exceed 300 mmol-1/L. These results shed light on the plant's mechanisms of responding to salt stress and provide a theoretical foundation for its cultivation and application in salt-affected regions.

Introduction: The primary objective of the current study was to evaluate the effects of Flammulina velutipes mushroom residue (FVMR) in a fermented total mixed ration (FTMR) diet on the fattening effect and rumen microorganisms in Guizhou black male goats. Methods: A total of 22 Guizhou black male goats were allocated into two groups using the Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) experimental design. The average initial weight was 22.41 ± 0.90 kg and with 11 goats in each group. The control group (group I) was fed the traditional fermentation total mixed ration (FTMR) diet without FVMR. Group II was fed the 30% FVMR in the FTMR diet. Results: The results showed that compared with group I, the addition of FVMR in the goat diet could reduce the feed cost and feed conversion ratio (FCR) of group II (p < 0.01). Notably, the apparent digestibility of crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and dry matter (DM) were higher in group II (p < 0.01). The levels of growth hormone (GH), immunoglobulin A (IgA), and immunoglobulin M (IgM) in group II were higher than that of group I (p < 0.01), which the level of glutamic oxalacetic transaminase (ALT) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) was noticeably lower than that of group I (p < 0.01). 30% FVMR in FTMR diets had no effect on rumen fermentation parameters and microbial composition at the phylum level of Guizhou black male goats (p > 0.05). However, at the genus level, the relative abundance of bacteroidal_bs11_gut_group, Christensenellaceae_R-7_group and Desulfovibrio in group II was lower than in group I (p < 0.05), and the relative abundance of Lachnospiraceae_ND3007_group was higher than in group I (p < 0.01). Discussion: In conclusion, the results of the current study indicated that 30% FVMR in the FTMR diet improves rumen fermentation and rumen microbial composition in Guizhou black male goats, which improves growth performance, apparent digestibility, and immunity.
