RESUMEN

Maritime traffic and port activities pose several environmental and ecological problems in the marine environment. The purpose of this study was to provide baseline data for the future assessment of anthropogenic impacts related with port activities in Slovenian Sea (Northern Adriatic Sea). The macrobenthic communities near the port of Koper, as well as sites offshore were analysed. Results showed that the sites offshore were generally richer and more structured than sites inside the Port area. Those differences were explained partly by depth and sediment grain size. The ecological quality indicated by M-AMBI index resulted Good/High at all the sampling sites. However, the k-dominance curves indicated a disturbance at certain sites, in particular in the port channels. This work highlights the need for consistent monitoring programs to provide baseline data for future studies assessment of anthropogenic impacts.

The main environmental variables of bottom seawater and macrobenthic invertebrates were investigated from February 2015 to January 2016 to evaluate the benthic ecological status in adjacent areas of the Yangtze River Estuary, China. Diverse ecological assessment results were given by the AZTI Marine Biotic Index (AMBI), multivariate-AMBI (M-AMBI) and benthic opportunistic polychaetes amphipods (BOPA) index, showing that the M-AMBI was the most suitable in the study area. A clear spatial distribution pattern related to the distance from the estuary and the coasts was found both for the benthic ecological status and the eutrophication-related bottom seawater environmental variables, indicating that the study area was under eutrophication pressure. Two major disturbed regions (one was east of the Yangtze River Estuary, and the other was east of Zhejiang Province) were discovered, which was probably mainly caused by the Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW). No significant seasonal changes were found in the ecological status.

The adjacent waters of the Yangtze River Estuary are influenced by heavy anthropogenic activities. The benthic ecological status was assessed using the Shannon-Wiener diversity index, the AZTI Marine Biotic Index (AMBI), and the multivariate AMBI (M-AMBI) based on macrofaunal data collected in this area at 51 sites in June 2013 and June 2014. In total, 321 species of macrofauna were identified. Polychaetes were the most dominant, followed by mollusks and crustaceans. The AMBI results showed that 72.55% of the sites were under slight disturbance with a decreasing disturbance trend from inshore to offshore. M-AMBI showed that most of the sites were under lower disturbance level than those shown by AMBI. The Shannon-Wiener diversity index showed that only two sites, near the Yangtze River Estuary and the Zhoushan Islands, respectively, were under moderate status. Other sites were under good or high status, which is consistent with the M-AMBI results.

Intensive anthropogenic activities have a serious negative effect on the Jiangsu coastal area of China, especially on the distinctive intertidal zone. Humans are trying to eliminate this effect by taking protection and eco-compensation measures. However, when trying to determine the ecological status and quantify the anthropogenic impact for this area, the complex relationship between ecosystems and environmental stress leads to difficulties in reflecting general environmental quality. This study assessed the benthic ecological status of 10 transects (three stations/transect) across six different typologies over six years (2007, 2009-2013) in the Jiangsu intertidal zone. A unitary assessment of each transect was conducted using the multivariate AZTI Marine Biotic Index (M-AMBI), along with a radar chart (and its parameters). In the Jiangsu intertidal zone, the ecological status was noted as good or moderate at most sampling stations. Among the six assessed years, 2010 had the highest ecological status, while 2007 had the lowest. As for transects, transect 1 had the highest ratings, and transect 3 had the lowest ratings. Various stresses and advantageous human intervention and contributed to the ecological status for the different areas. The M-AMBI could be used in the future as a suitable index to assess the benthic ecological status of the Jiangsu intertidal zone. In addition, the new unitary method validated in this study could be used to assess ecosystems with several small biotopes, while accurately reflecting environmental quality.

Sediment characteristics and benthic communities on a finer sampling scale in four contrasting environments in subtropical Hong Kong were analyzed in summer and winter 2012. In two harbour habitats which suffered from historic sewage pollution or hypoxic events, organic carbon, nutrient and trace metal content in the sediment were significantly higher than that in an offshore area and a marine reserve. The relatively low organic and nutrient content in the offshore habitat could be resulted from enhanced resuspension of such materials from the seabed owing to intense water mixing and disturbance caused by bottom trawling. The biotic indices AMBI and M-AMBI were shown to be useful in assessing the benthic ecological status of these habitats. Such indices can also be more sensitive than sediment physico-chemical parameters in differentiating the response of macrofauna to seasonal changes in the benthic environment.

The coastal waters around Yantai have been subjected to a variety of anthropogenic pressures over the last two decades. To assess the current benthic ecological health and the recovery process of the benthic ecosystem, four surveys were conducted in 2010 and 2011. The AMBI and M-AMBI were applied to assess the benthic ecological status. The ecological status of the Sishili Bay and Taozi Bay was "moderate" to "good" at most sampling stations during four surveys, but some stations were degraded due to pollution and eutrophication induced by human activities. The ecological status improved after removal of the marine raft culture and minimizing the amount of waste water discharged into the coastal waters of Yantai. The AMBI and M-AMBI could be used as suitable bio-indicator indices to assess the benthic ecological status of coastal waters in Yantai, Shandong Province.
