RESUMEN

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are a group of compounds widespread in the environment. To investigate the occurrence and accumulation characteristics of PAEs, surface water samples were collected from the Three Gorges Reservoir area, China. The total concentrations of 11 analyzed PAEs (∑11PAEs) in the collected water samples ranging from 197.7 to 1,409.3 ng/L (mean ± IQR: 583.1 ± 308.4 ng/L). While DEHP was the most frequently detected PAE, DnBP and DnNP were the most predominant PAEs in the analyzed water samples with a mean contribution of 63.3% of the ∑11PAEs. The concentrations of the ∑11PAEs in the water samples from the upper reaches of the Yangtze River were significantly higher than those from the middle reaches. To better understand the transport and fate of the PAEs, seven detected PAEs were modeled by Quantitative Water Air Sediment Interaction (QWASI). The simulated and measured values were close for most PAEs, and differences are within one order of magnitude even for the worst one. For all simulated PAEs, water and particle inflow were main sources in the reservoir, whereas water outflow and degradation in water were important removal pathways. The contribution ratios of different sources/losses varied from PAEs, depending on their properties. The calculated risk quotients of DnNP in the Three Gorges Reservoir area whether based on monitoring or simulating results were all far exceeded the safety threshold value, implying the occurrence of this PAE compound may cause potential adverse effects for the aquatic ecology of the Three Gorges Reservoir area.

The increased frequency and intensity of heavy rainfall events due to climate change could potentially influence the movement of nutrients from land-based regions into recipient rivers. However, little information is available on how the rainfall affect nutrient dynamics in subtropical montane rivers with complex land use. This study conducted high-frequency monitoring to study the effects of rainfall on nutrients dynamics in an agricultural river draining to Lake Qiandaohu, a montane reservoir of southeast China. The results showed that riverine total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations increased continuously with increasing rainfall intensity, while TN:TP decreased. The heavy rainfall and rainstorm drove more than 30% of the annual N and P loading in only 5.20% of the total rainfall period, indicating that increased storm runoff is likely to exacerbate eutrophication in montane reservoirs. NO3--N is the primary nitrogen form lost, while particulate phosphorus (PP) dominated phosphorus loss. The main source of N is cropland, and the main source of P is residential area. Spatially, forested watersheds have better drainage quality, while it is still a potential source of nonpoint pollution during rainfall events. TN and TP concentrations were significantly higher at sites dominated by cropland and residential area, indicating their substantial contributions to deteriorating river water quality. Temporally, TN and TP concentrations reached high values in May-August when rainfall was most intense, while they were lower in autumn and winter than that in spring and summer under the same rainfall intensities. The results emphasize the influence of rainfall-runoff and land use on dynamics of riverine N and P loads, providing guidance for nutrient load reduction planning for Lake Qiandaohu.

Metabolomics is the study of low molecular weight biochemical molecules (typically <1500 Da) in a defined biological organism or system. In case of food systems, the term "food metabolomics" is often used. Food metabolomics has been widely explored and applied in various fields including food analysis, food intake, food traceability, and food safety. Food safety applications focusing on the identification of pathogen-specific biomarkers have been promising. This chapter describes a nontargeted metabolite profiling workflow using gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) for characterizing three globally important foodborne pathogens, Escherichia coli O157:H7, Listeria monocytogenes, and Salmonella enterica, from selective enrichment liquid culture media. The workflow involves a detailed description of food spiking experiments followed by procedures for the extraction of polar metabolites from media, the analysis of the extracts using GC-MS, and finally chemometric data analysis using univariate and multivariate statistical tools to identify potential pathogen-specific biomarkers.

Background: A community-based study on childhood injuries would provide valuable information on the epidemiology of injuries to undertake appropriate preventive measures. Therefore, the current study was conducted in urban poor resettlements of Rishikesh to estimate the prevalence of unintentional injuries and to document the sociodemographic risk factors associated with unintentional injuries among under-five children. Aims and Objectives: Estimation of the prevalence of unintentional injuries and their risk factors among under-five children of urban poor resettlements in Rishikesh. Materials and Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in urban poor resettlement areas of Rishikesh for a period of 1 year. It included 300 children selected using a simple random sampling technique to collect data on injury status. Results: The prevalence of unintentional injury among study participants was 16%. Falls were (64.6%) the major cause of injury, followed by dog bites (12.5%). The major sites of the injury were the head (25%), face (22.9%), upper limb (27.1%), and lower limb (18.8%).75% of the injuries happened at home. 66% of injuries happened when the child was playing alone or playing with peers. About 20.8% of injuries were bruises or superficial injuries. 39.6% of children had cut/bite/open wound injuries. Fractures happened in 14.6% of injured children. More than half (54.2%) of children did not develop any physical disability due to injury. Among children who developed a disability, more than 90% are able to recover completely. The majority of study participants were taken to nearby hospitals (66.6%) or health centers (10.4%). Only one of them went to a traditional bone setter, rest all visited either a general practitioner or pharmacy. The median expenditure for the treatment of the injured child was INR 425 (175-2750). The age of the child and unintentional injury showed a statistically significant association. Conclusion: The prevalence of the injury was 16% (12-20.7%) similar to a number of similar studies. Although the majority of the injuries were mild in severity, injuries have also contributed to temporary disability among children and have led to loss of school days.

Avian brood parasitism is an evolutionarily derived behavior for which the neurobiological mechanisms are mostly unexplored. We aimed to identify brain regions that have diverged in the brood-parasitic brain using relative transcript abundance of social neuropeptides and receptors. We compared behavioral responses and transcript abundance in three brain regions in the brown-headed cowbird (BHCO), a brood parasite, and a closely related parental species, the red-winged blackbird (RWBL). Females of both species were treated with mesotocin (MT; avian homolog of oxytocin) or saline prior to exposure to nest stimuli. Results reveal that MT promotes approach toward nests with eggs rather than nests with begging nestlings in both species. We also examined relative transcript abundance of the five social neuropeptides and receptors in the brain regions examined: preoptic area (POA), paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST). We found that MT-treated cowbirds but not blackbirds exhibited lower transcript abundance for two receptors, corticotropin-releasing factor 2 (CRFR2) and prolactin receptor (PRLR) in BST. Additionally, MT-treated cowbirds had higher PRLR in POA, comparable to those found in blackbirds, regardless of treatment. No other transcripts of interest exhibited significant differences as a result of MT treatment, but we found a significant effect of species in the three regions. Together, these results indicate that POA, PVN, and BST represent neural nodes that have diverged in avian brood parasites and may serve as neural substrates of brood-parasitic behavior.

The utilization of regional water resources has the potential to impact carbon emissions. Maintaining a decoupled relationship between water resources and carbon emissions facilitates harmonious regional development. Understanding the mechanism of their coordination is conducive to achieving the "Double Carbon" goal and control of regional carbon emissions and water resource consumption. This study examines the decoupling relationship between water resource utilization and carbon emissions in Poyang Lake area, China, employing the Tapio decoupling model and the LMDI(logarithmic mean divisia index) decomposition model. The results indicate that carbon emissions in Poyang Lake area exhibited a gradual increase, accompanied by an annual growth rate of 5.99 %. The water supply exhibited a slow expansion. They have exhibited state of affairs strong negative decoupling and expansive negative decoupling over the past 15 years. Moreover, this situation is most acute and worsening in the secondary industry. The water use structure effect and water economic benefit effect are the primary factors affecting carbon emission increases, contributing 57.93 % and 65.66 %, respectively. Carbon emissions intensity is the largest inhibiting factor, which accounts for a maximum contribution of 42.96 %. The order of potency of the driving factors is as follows: water economic benefit > carbon emission intensity > water use structure > water use efficiency. In summary, this research recognised the enhancement of the water economic efficiency index not only facilitates the decoupling phenomenon but also improves the water-carbon relationship, especially in the secondary industry. It serves as a compelling illustration of the significance of elucidating the interrelationship between regional water and carbon dynamics, and charting the course for the formulation of regional policies that would facilitate the advancement of environmentally conscious and carbon-neutral development, as well as water conservation.

The integration of modern service and advanced manufacturing industries represents deep industrial reform and profound change in quality concepts, mechanisms, and practices. Integrating these two industries is important for achieving high-quality development and is an area of interest for policymakers and academia. This study analyzes the data of 11 regions in 2021 in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area using the fuzzy set qualitative comparative analysis method from the configuration perspective. This study explores the effects of multiple factors, such as economic efficiency, technological innovation, and the policy environment, on improving the coupling coordination level of the modern service and advanced manufacturing industries, and analyzes the path selection of industrial integration development. Overall, economic efficiency, technological innovation, and policy environment factors are not necessary conditions for the integration development of the modern service and advanced manufacturing industries. The multiple impacts of economic efficiency, technological innovation, and policy environment form a multi-restructuring path that drives the integration of the two industries. Owing to the economic development level and resource endowment of different regions, the path dictating the degree of integration between the two industries varies by region. From a holistic perspective, all regions should strive to coordinate the multiple conditions of economic efficiency, technological innovation, and policy environment to break through objective constraints such as the government's conditions and external environment based on their own organizational conditions and resource endowments. Additionally, all regions should strengthen exchanges, cooperation, and integration mechanisms and implement complementary development and distinctive development in core cities in the Greater Bay Area. The results clarify the factors affecting industrial convergence in the Greater Bay Area, enriching existing research methods and laying a foundation for a decision-making theory of industrial integration development.

Food security and diet diversity is essential to sustainable food system all over the world. As the income of rural residents achieves great increase, the structure of food consumption and food diversification face significant change. Rural residents' food consumption and nutrients intake worth more attention. Chinese government has been striving to achieve sustainable development in rural areas. We conducted this study to explore area-level practices aiming at achieving food and nutrition security in rural China. In order to search for the change principle and main influencing factors of residents' food consumption, three rural areas in Henan Province were selected. According to the data obtained from the Henan Province Bureau of Statistics, changes in food consumption from 2012 to 2021 in three rural areas were analyzed in this study. This study led to the following remarkable results: (1) The per capita consumption of poultry, meat, sugar, and eggs of the three rural residents has increased much more than that of other food items. (2) In the three rural areas, the proportions of grains, vegetables, liquor, and edible oils have decreased overall. The proportions of other categories, such as poultry, meat, and fruits, have increased. (3) The rural residents' per capita nutrition intake has increased remarkably. The results provide some empirical foundation for local government who need suggest that rural residents should control their intake of high-energy food, such as poultry, meat, and sugar. This study has significant policy implication for achieving sustainable goals in rural areas of China.

Left bundle branch pacing has recently emerged as a significant alternative to right ventricular pacing. The rate of implanted stylet-driven septal leads is expected to increase substantially in the coming years, along with the need to manage long-term complications. Experience in extracting these leads is currently very limited; however, the number of complex extractions is anticipated to increase in the future. We report a complex case involving the extraction of a long-dwelling Solia lead used for left bundle branch pacing in a 21-year-old man. The lead was extracted through the implant vein 27 months after implantation, using a methodology that involved a locking stylet and compression coil. The new lead insertion was challenging due to venous occlusion but after successful venoplasty, the His lead was successfully implanted. The postoperative course was uneventful, demonstrating the feasibility of extraction without complications.

OBJECTIVES: Unique lifestyle and cultural factors in China may lead to distinct patterns of risk factors for oral frailty among older adults, especially in regions inhabited by northeastern border minority groups. METHODS: From July to November 2023, a convenience sampling method was employed to select older adults from three communities in Yanji City as the subjects. Data were collected by a set of questionnaires. RESULTS: A total of 478 older adults were included, revealing a prevalence rate of 71.6 % for oral frailty. Factors influencing were found to include age, ethnicity, gender, income, number of chronic diseases, body mass index, drinking, physical frailty, sleep disorders, and attitudes towards aging (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: There is a higher prevalence of oral frailty. It is crucial to prioritize the oral health issues of older adults with high-risk factors and implement targeted intervention measures to reduce and control the occurrence and progression of oral frailty.

A fundamental requirement for all animals is to sense and respond to changes in environmental O2 availability. Low O2 (hypoxia) typically stimulates breathing, a universal and critical response termed the hypoxic ventilatory response (HVR). In this study, we test the hypothesis that taste-signaling pathways are used for O2 sensing and activation of the HVR. We show that Merkel-like cells (MLCs), which are part of the taste-bud complex, function as O2 chemoreceptor cells in larval zebrafish and that transduction of the O2 signal uses taste-signaling pathways. Specifically, MLCs responded to hypoxia in vivo with an increase in Ca2+ activity that can drive the HVR. In addition, MLCs transmit O2 signals to afferent cranial nerves IX and X (nIX/X), which project into the area postrema within the hindbrain and synapse with interneurons that are in contact with vagal motor neurons. Hypoxia or chemo-activation of nIX/X caused Ca2+ activity to increase within the area postrema and elicited hyperventilation. The results provide the first demonstration of an O2 signaling pathway that commences with the activation of taste receptors (MLCs) to yield a critical physiological reflex, the HVR.

Background: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common chronic eczematous skin disease with severe pruritus. Several new therapeutic agents for AD such as dupilumab, an anti-IL-4Rα antibody, have been developed in recent years. We need to predict which agent is the best choice for each patient, but this remains difficult. Objective: Our aim was to examine clinical background factors and baseline biomarkers that could predict the achievement of improved clinical outcomes in patients with AD treated with dupilumab. Methods: A multicenter, prospective observational study was conducted on 110 patients with AD. The Eczema Area and Severity Index was used as an objective assessment, and the Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure and Numerical Rating Scale for Pruritus were used as patient-reported outcomes. In addition, some clinical background factors were evaluated. Results: The achievement of an absolute Eczema Area and Severity Index of 7 or less was negatively associated with current comorbidity of food allergy and baseline serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels. There were negative associations between achievement of a Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure score of 7 or less and duration of severe AD and between achievement of an itching Numerical Rating Scale for Pruritus score of 1 or less and current comorbidity of allergic conjunctivitis or baseline serum periostin level. Furthermore, signal detection analysis showed that a baseline serum LDH level less than 328 U/L could potentially be used as a cutoff value for predicting the efficacy of dupilumab. Conclusion: Baseline biomarkers such as LDH and periostin and clinical background factors such as current comorbidity of food allergy and a long period of severe disease may be useful indicators when choosing dupilumab for systemic treatment for AD, as they can predict the efficacy of dupilumab.

Adaptively managing marine protected areas (MPAs) requires accurately assessing whether established MPAs are achieving their goals of protecting and conserving biomass, especially for harvested populations. Ecological MPA assessments commonly compare inside of the MPA to a reference point outside of and/or before implementation (i.e., calculating "response ratios"). Yet, MPAs are not simple ecological experiments; by design, protected populations interact with those outside, and population dynamic responses can be nonlinear. This complicates assessment interpretations. Here, we used a two-patch population model to explore how MPA response ratios (outside-inside, before-after, and before-after-control-impact [BACI]) for fished populations behave under different conditions, like whether the population is receiving a sustainable larval supply or if it is declining despite protection from harvest. We then conducted a Bayesian evaluation of MPA effects on fish and invertebrate populations based on data collected from 82 published studies on 264 no-take MPAs worldwide, using the results of an earlier global meta-analysis as priors. We considered the effects of calculating different summary metrics on these results, drawing on the theoretical insights from our population model as a comparative framework. We demonstrate that not all response ratio comparison types provide the same information: For example, outside-inside and BACI comparisons can fail to detect population decline within MPAs, whereas before-after comparisons likely detect that pattern. Considering these limitations, we nonetheless found that MPAs globally are producing positive outcomes, with on average greater biomass, density, and organism size within their boundaries than reference sites. However, only a small portion of studies (18 of 82) provided the temporal data necessary to determine that protection, on average, has led to increased abundance of populations within MPAs over time. These findings demonstrate the importance of considering the underlying system dynamics when assessing MPA effects. Assuming that large outside-inside or BACI response ratios always reflect large and net positive conservation effects may lead to misleading conclusions, we recommend that: (1) when assessing specific MPA effects, empirical findings be considered alongside theoretical knowledge relevant to that MPA system, and (2) management should respond to the local conditions and outcomes, rather than a blanket expectation for positive MPA effects.

BACKGROUND: Community health workers (CHWs) are effective in delivering behavioral activation (BA), especially in low-resource settings. In an area with a lack of Spanish-speaking mental health counselors, such as southwest Montana, CHWs can provide needed care. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this pilot study protocol is to test the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary efficacy of a model of care that engages CHWs as providers of BA. METHODS: We will train 2 CHWs in BA methodology. We will enroll 20 participants who screen positive for depression in a 12-week telephone intervention for BA. Preliminary efficacy will be tested in pre- and postscores of the Beck Depression Inventory and semistructured interviews. Feasibility and acceptability will be measured through participant retention and treatment adherence. The Therapeutic Alliance with Clinician Scale will be used to measure the strength of the therapeutic relationship. Descriptive statistics will measure alliances and repeated measures ANOVA will measure trends and changes in depression scores. RESULTS: Enrollment began in October 2023. A total of 12 participants completed at least 10 BA sessions and all study measures by the time the study concluded in May 2024. In August 2024, data analysis occurred with an anticipated manuscript to be submitted for publication in October 2024. CONCLUSIONS: Results from this study will inform future studies into the implementation of an evidence-based mental health intervention in a limited resource setting for Latino people with limited English proficiency. Hyperfunction of the dopamine system has been implicated in manic episodes in bipolar disorders. How dopaminergic neuronal function is regulated in the pathogenesis of mania remains unclear. Histaminergic neurons project dense efferents into the midbrain dopaminergic nuclei. Here, we present mice lacking dopaminergic histamine H2 receptor (H2R) in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) that exhibit a behavioral phenotype mirroring some of the symptoms of mania, including increased locomotor activity and reduced anxiety- and depression-like behavior. These behavioral deficits can be reversed by the mood stabilizers lithium and valproate. H2R deletion in dopaminergic neurons significantly enhances neuronal activity, concurrent with a decrease in the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) type A receptor (GABAAR) membrane presence and inhibitory transmission. Conversely, either overexpression of H2R in VTA dopaminergic neurons or treatment of H2R agonist amthamine within the VTA counteracts amphetamine-induced hyperactivity. Together, our results demonstrate the engagement of H2R in reducing VTA dopaminergic activity, shedding light on the role of H2R as a potential target for mania therapy.

Recent artificial intelligence (AI) advancements in cardiovascular medicine offer potential enhancements in diagnosis, prediction, treatment, and outcomes. This article aims to provide a basic understanding of AI enabled ECG technology. Specific conditions and findings will be discussed, followed by reviewing associated terminology and methodology. In the appendix, definitions of AUC versus accuracy are explained. The application of deep learning models enables detecting diseases from normal electrocardiograms at accuracy not previously achieved by technology or human experts. Results with AI enabled ECG are encouraging as they considerably exceeded current screening models for specific conditions (i.e., atrial fibrillation, left ventricular dysfunction, aortic stenosis, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy). This could potentially lead to a revitalization of the utilization of the ECG in the insurance domain. While we are embracing the findings with this rapidly evolving technology, but cautious optimism is still necessary at this point.

Vancomycin, a vital antibiotic for treating gram-positive bacterial infections, requires therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) because of its substantial pharmacokinetic variability. While traditional TDM relies on steady-state trough concentrations, recent guidelines advocate the area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) as the target index. However, detailed protocols for AUC estimation are lacking, leading to potential discrepancies among institutions. We surveyed medical institutions in Korea regarding vancomycin TDM, including AUC estimation. Nineteen participants responded to the TDM case challenge under three patient scenarios. For an ordinary patient in Case 1, the overall CV for AUC values was 0.4% when both trough and peak concentrations were included in the AUC calculation and 1.9% when utilizing only the trough concentration. For Case 2, an older patient with obesity, the corresponding CV was 6.6%. For Case 3 with multiple trough concentrations, the CV was 15.6%, reflecting variations in the selective use of data. Although the agreements in Case 1 were good, significant variability in AUC estimation was noted in cases involving atypical patient characteristics or old TDM data. Our study provides insight into the current status of vancomycin TDM in Korea and underscores the need for standardized operational protocols for AUC estimation.

Frugivory supports seed dispersal and the reproductive success of various plants. Environmental degradation can lead to the local extinction of medium and large frugivores, jeopardizing this process. The picazuro pigeon (Patagioenas picazuro), typically associated with open and semi-open areas in Brazil, was mainly considered granivorous until the late 20th century but is now recognized as a frugivore or granivore-frugivore. In this study, we assessed its frugivorous diet and role as a seed disperser by collecting seeds from fecal samples on the Unicamp campus and analyzing the condition of the seeds after passing through the digestive tract of P. picazuro. We found 42 plant species in its feces, including Cordia myxa, Solanum americanum, Solanum granuloso-leprosum, and Cytharexyllum myrianthum. While Solanum americanum and Solanum granuloso-leprosum had germination rates of 63% and 28%, respectively, Cordia myxa and Cytharexyllum myrianthum did not germinate. Thus, P. picazuro plays a relevant ecological role as an occasional frugivore in semi-open and anthropized environments in southeastern and southern Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: To compare sensitivity, specificity, receiver operating characteristic (ROC), and area under the curve (AUC) values using the modified Frailty Index 11 (mFI-11), EuroSCORE II, and combined mFI-11 and EuroSCORE II to predict in-hospital mortality and composite morbidities. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study SETTING: Songklanagarind Hospital, a tertiary care center in southern Thailand. PARTICIPANTS: Elderly patients age ≥60 years who underwent elective open-heart surgical procedures on a pump between January 2017 and December 2022 were included. INTERVENTIONS: ROC curves were constructed to evaluate the discriminatory power of EuroSCORE II and mFI-11 for predicting in-hospital mortality and postoperative complications. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The actual in-hospital mortality was 2.5% for all patients. The discriminative accuracy of mFI-11, EuroSCORE II, and combined mFI-11 with EuroSCORE II for predicting in-hospital mortality was good, with respective AUC values of 0.733 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.6157-0.8499), 0.793 (95% CI, 0.6826-0.9026), and 0.78 (95% CI, 0.6686-0.893). The AUC of mFI-11 for predicting postoperative cardiac, respiratory, neurologic, and renal complications was 0.558 (95% CI, 0.5101-0.6063), 0.606 (95% CI, 0.5542-0.6581), 0.543 (95% CI, 0.4533-0.6337), and 0.652 (95% CI, 0.5859-0.7179), respectively, and that of EuroSCORE II was 0.553 (95% CI, 0.5038-0.6013), 0.631 (95% CI, 0.578-0.6836), 0.619 (95% CI, 0.5306-0.7076), and 0.702 (95% CI, 0.6378-0.7657), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The mFI-11 and EuroSCORE II demonstrated good discrimination in ROC analysis, with EuroSCORE II showing superior predictive accuracy for in-hospital mortality in elderly elective cardiac surgery patients. However, neither score independently predicted mortality in multiple logistic regression, nor did combining them enhance predictive power significantly. Furthermore, both scores were less effective in predicting postoperative complications.

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin type A (BTXA) can improve wound healing and reduce scar formation; however, the exact dose required to prevent postoperative scarring across various anatomical sites remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness and optimal concentrations of BTXA for preventing postoperative scarring across various common surgical sites throughout the body. METHODS: In this prospective randomized controlled trial, 46 patients with benign skin tumors received injections of 1, 2.5, or 5 U/0.1 mL of BTXA or 0.9% saline immediately following surgical tumor excision on both sides of the incisions. Follow-ups were conducted at 7 days, 15 days, and 1, 3, and 6 months postoperatively. Patient-reported adverse events and standardized digital photographs were collected. Scar formation was assessed using the modified Stony Brook Scar Evaluation Scale (mSBSES). RESULTS: All 46 patients completed the trial without severe complications. The mSBSES scores were higher in the experimental groups at all follow-ups. The 5 U/0.1 mL BTXA dose group demonstrated optimal scar prevention at all high-risk sites for scar hyperplasia. No significant difference was observed between the 2.5 U/0.1 mL and 5 U/0.1 mL doses for intermediate-risk sites, while 1 U/0.1 mL dose was sufficient for low-risk sites. Overall, 86.5% of patients were satisfied with their treatments, with 16.3% being very satisfied. CONCLUSIONS: Early postoperative BTXA injection can reduce or prevent hypertrophic scarring, with optimal doses ranging from 1 to 5 U/0.1 mL depending on the surgical site, supporting broader clinical application of BTXA. The effectiveness of different concentrations of botulinum toxin type A (BTXA) in preventing postoperative scarring was compared, expanding the scope of previous research, which focused only on the head, face, and neck regions, to include the trunk and extremity areas. Different optimal injection strategies were determined based on different surgical sites and their risks of developing hypertrophic scars. The study demonstrates that BTXA not only reduces scar formation but also enhances patient satisfaction and reduces postoperative itching and pain, contributing to overall better postoperative outcomes. By establishing the efficacy and optimal dosing of BTXA for various surgical sites, this research supports the potential for broader clinical application of BTXA in aesthetic and reconstructive surgeries.
