ABSTRACT Aquatic macrophytes play an important role in lentic systems, since they constitute the particular habitat of several groups of aquatic insects and play a fundamental role in structuring their communities. The objective of this study was to contribute to the knowledge of the aquatic entomofauna associated with macrophytes in wetlands of the middle basin of the Atrato River, Chocó-Colombia. For four months, collections of aquatic insects associated with the roots of different aquatic plants were made, using a quadrat of one m2, equipped with a 0.5 mm mesh, with three replicates per swamp. Simultaneously, some physical and chemical variables of the water were measured. The community of aquatic insects was composed of 6 orders, 23 families, and 36 genera. The most representative orders were Hemiptera (Heteroptera) and Odonata and the most abundant families were Noteridae (Coleoptera) and Libellulidae (Odonata). The diversity index presented a range between 2.39 and 2.07 bits/ind, with Plaza Seca as the most representative wetlands, while the dominance was between 0.16 and 0.11. The most abundant functional group was that of predators. The variables pH, water temperature and transparency presented significant differences between swamps and there were important associations between the aquatic entomofauna, and the abiotic variables analyzed.


RESUMEN-+ Las macrófitas acuáticas juegan un rol importante en los sistemas lénticos, ya que constituyen el hábitat particular de varios grupos de insectos acuáticos y desempeñan un papel fundamental en la estructuración de sus comunidades. El objetivo de este estudio fue contribuir al conocimiento de la entomofauna acuática asociada las macrófitas en ciénagas de la cuenca media del Río Atrato, Chocó-Colombia. Durante cuatro meses se hicieron colectas de insectos acuáticos asociados a las raíces de diferentes plantas acuáticas, utilizando un cuadrante de un m2, dotado de una malla de 0,5 mm, con tres replicas por ciénaga. Simultáneamente se midieron algunas variables físicas y químicas del agua. La comunidad de insectos acuáticos estuvo compuesta por 6 órdenes, 23 familias y 36 géneros. Los órdenes más representativos fueron Hemiptera (Heteroptera) y Odonata y las familias más abundantes fueron Noteridae (Coleoptera) y Libellulidae (Odonata). El índice de diversidad presentó un rango de entre 2,39 y 2,07 bits/ind, sobresaliendo la ciénaga Plaza Seca, mientras que la dominancia estuvo entre 0,16 y 0,11. El grupo funcional de mayor abundancia fue el de los predadores. Las variables pH, temperatura del agua y transparencia presentaron diferencias significativas entre ciénagas y existieron importantes asociaciones entre la entomofauna acuática y las variables abióticas analizadas.

Mercury contamination in the Amazon arising from both natural sources and intensive mining activities in the region is a significant public health concern. This metal is used to separate Au from sediments. Accordingly, this study aimed to assess the impact of mining on mercury contamination in the animal and human populations of the Amazon. This overall objective was pursued through a systematic review of the existing literature to assess the impact of Hg and identify gaps in geographic coverage arising from this assessment. Herein, we employed PECO and PRISMA-ScR protocols to select articles published between 2017 and 2023 based on projected points on a map within the biogeographic boundaries of the Amazon. We found that mercury concentrations increase with trophic levels, reaching high values of 3.7 µg/g in the muscles of predatory fish and 34.9 µg/g in human hair. The mean level of mercury in human hair in the whole (Amazon) region exceeds 6 µg/g, surpassing tolerance levels. Although mining regions show high concentrations of Hg, the highest incidence was observed among populations with fish-based diets. It was concluded that continuous research and monitoring of fish in the region are required in order to accurately assess the risk associated with Hg contamination, especially since fish are the main source of protein in this region.

This review addresses the formation and relevance of mercury cyanide complexes as environmental contaminants. Gold extraction is traditionally carried out through the process of mercury amalgamation (Hg) due to its simplicity and low cost. However, this process is inefficient, capturing only about 30% of the gold present in the processed material. Additionally, mercury is toxic, mobile, and capable of accumulating in aquatic ecosystems, leading to its prohibition in several countries. As an alternative, cyanidation has been widely used in gold extraction. However, the frequent combination of Hg amalgamation with cyanidation can result in the formation of mercury cyanide complexes, which can be released into local water bodies, potentially impacting human health and the environment. This article reviews the existing knowledge of these complexes and highlights the remaining gaps in understanding their environmental behavior. It also emphasizes the need to address concerns related to the formation of these complexes and seek solutions to minimize their negative impacts. Furthermore, the article highlights the lack of updates in the literature regarding the impacts of cyanidation and the limited availability of comprehensive information on the topic. It is essential to conduct updated research in this area to advance knowledge and promote safer and more responsible practices in the mining industry.

The effect of daily ingestion of polypropylene microplastic on the health of tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, was evaluated. 60 fish (± 200 g) were placed in 6 aquariums (n = 10, 100 L each), constituting the following treatments: Control (without the addition of polymer), fed with 100 and 500 µg of polypropylene/kg of body weight (b.w.), respectively. After 30 days of feeding, the animals were submitted to blood collection for hemogram and biochemical study and later euthanized for gut microbiological analysis, somatic index of liver, spleen, heart, kidney, stomach, and intestine. In the serum biochemical study, an increase in cholesterol and serum Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) activity levels was observed in animals treated with 500 µg of polypropylene. Tilapia-fed polypropylene in the diet showed an increase in thrombocyte and total leukocyte counts, marked by a significant increase in the number of circulating lymphocytes. The results of the somatic study revealed a significant increase in the stomach, liver, and heart of tilapia fed with the polymer. Increase in the number of Gram-negative microorganisms and decrease in mesophilic aerobic microorganisms were observed in the gut of fish exposed to the polymer, including a dose-response effect was observed for these analyses. Therefore, tilapias fed daily with diets containing polypropylene for 30 consecutive days showed deleterious effects, resulting in systemic inflammatory disturbs by altering liver functions, leukocyte profile, and organ morphometry, as well as changes in the intestinal microbiota. Such results demonstrate the impairment of fish health, highlighting the need for further studies that evaluate the impact of microplastics on aquatic organisms.

Tigecycline (TGC) is an important antimicrobial agent used as a last resort for difficult-to-treat infections mainly caused by carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, but TGC-resistant strains are emerging, raising concerns. In this study, 33 whole-genome characterized multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains (Klebsiella species and Escherichia coli) positive mainly to mcr-1, bla, and/or qnr from the environment were investigated for TGC susceptibility and mutations in TGC resistance determinants, predicting a genotype-phenotype relationship. TGC minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of Klebsiella species and E. coli ranged from 0.25 to 8 and 0.125 to 0.5 mg/L, respectively. In this context, KPC-2-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae ST11 and Klebsiella quasipneumoniae subsp. quasipneumoniae ST4417 strains were resistant to TGC, while some E. coli strains of ST10 clonal complex positive for mcr-1 and/or blaCTX-M exhibited reduced susceptibility to this antimicrobial. Overall, neutral and deleterious mutations were shared among TGC-susceptible and TGC-resistant strains. A new frameshift mutation (Q16stop) in RamR was found in a K. quasipneumoniae strain and was associated with TGC resistance. Deleterious mutations in OqxR were identified in Klebsiella species and appear to be associated with decreased susceptibility to TGC. All E. coli strains were determined as susceptible, but multiple point mutations were identified, highlighting deleterious mutations in ErmY, WaaQ, EptB, and RfaE in strains exhibiting decreased susceptibility to TGC. These findings demonstrate that resistance to TGC is not widespread in environmental MDR strains and provide genomic insights about resistance and decreased susceptibility to TGC. From a One Health perspective, the monitoring of TGC susceptibility should be constant, improving the genotype-phenotype relationship and genetic basis.

Pesticide contamination in water resources is a global threat. Although usually found at low concentrations, pesticides raise considerable toxicological concerns, mainly when mixtures are considered. The occurrence of 22 pesticides (2,4 D, alachlor, aldicarb, aldrin, atrazine, carbendazim, carbofuran, chlordane, chlorpyrifos, DDT, diuron, glyphosate, lindane, mancozeb, methamidophos, metolachlor, molinate, profenofos, simazine, tebuconazole, terbufos, and trifluralin) was investigated, through consolidated database information, in surface freshwaters of Brazil. Moreover, scenarios of environmental risk assessment considering isolated compounds and mixtures were performed, as well as a meta-analytic approach for toxicity purposes. Pesticides in freshwater have been reported from 719 cities (12.9% of Brazilian cities), where 179 (3.2%) showed pesticide occurrence above the limit of detection or quantification. Considering cities with more than five quantified, 16 cities were prone to environmental risks considering individual risks. However, the number increased to 117 cities when the pesticide mixture was considered. The mixture risk was driven by atrazine, chlorpyrifos, and DDT. The national maximum acceptable concentrations (MAC) for nearly all pesticides are higher than the predicted no-effect concentration (PNEC) for the species evaluated, except aldrin. Our results show the need to consider mixtures in the environmental risk assessment to avoid underestimation and review MAC to protect aquatic ecosystems. The results presented here may guide the revision of the national environmental legislation to ensure the protection of Brazilian aquatic ecosystems.

Aquatic ecosystems have been suffering deleterious effects due to the development of different economic activities. Metal(loid)s are one of the most persistent chemicals in environmental reservoirs, and may produce adverse effects on different organisms. Since fishes have been largely used in studies of metal(loid)s exposure, tilapia and largemouth bass were collected in three ecosystems from the Yaqui River Basin to measure the concentrations of metal(loid)s (chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn) arsenic (As), mercury (Hg), and selenium (Se)) and some biomarkers (somatic indices, metallothionein expression and histopathological analysis) in tissues of both species. Metal(loid) concentrations varied seasonally among ecosystems in tissues of both species. The elements varied seasonally and spatially in tissues of both species, with a general distribution of liver > gills > gonads. Also, biomarkers showed variations indicative that the fish species were exposed to different environmental stressor conditions. The highest values of some biomarkers were in largemouth bass, possibly due to differences in their biological characteristics, mainly feeding habits. The multivariate analysis showed positive associations between metal(loid)s and biomarkers, which are usually associated to the use of these elements in metabolic and/or regulatory physiological processes. Both fish species presented histological damage at different levels, from SI types (changes that are reversible for organ structure) to SII types (changes that are more severe but may be repairable). Taken together, the results from this study suggest that the Yaqui River Basin is moderately impacted by metals and metalloids.

Solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation is an environmental genotoxic factor linked to amphibian decline. Here we assessed the genotoxic risk of UVB and UVA exposure for tadpoles from open ponds in southern Brazil, a mid-latitude region influenced by stratospheric ozone depletion. Daily UV doses were measured on the surface of a pond in Taim Ecological Station (TAIM; 32°49'24''S; 52°38'31''W) on a cloudless summer day to predict the worst-case scenario for UV-induced DNA damage. Pond descriptors were related to the use of microhabitats by Boana pulchella tadpoles in two ponds over the climate seasons of 2013 and 2014. Our results indicate that shaded microhabitats were more frequent than unshaded ones in autumn, winter, and spring but not in summer. Hence, the penetration of UV radiation into the water of unshaded microhabitats was evaluated through laboratory experiments with artificial UV sources and pond water samples. Physical and biological sensors were applied in the experiments to measure the incident UV radiation and its genotoxic action. By integrating field and laboratory data, we demonstrate that low doses of biologically effective UV radiation reached the tadpoles in autumn, winter, spring, and early summer due to a high proportion of shaded microhabitats and a high concentration of solids in unshaded microhabitats. However, the relative reduction of shaded microhabitats jointly with a declining water level in late summer may have exposed tadpoles to high UV doses. Our experiments also indicate that solar UVB radiation, but not UVA, is primarily responsible for the induction of DNA pyrimidine dimers in organisms living under the surface of aquatic ecosystems. The present work highlights the determinant role of wetland descriptors for minimizing the genotoxic potential of UV radiation and its consequences for amphibians.

Functional diversity is an emergent approach in ecology that has been applied globally to better understand the relationships between organisms and the environment. However, assessing the functional diversity of freshwater fish is a challenge for scientists. Aiming to summarize the evolution of scientific knowledge on fish functional diversity, we performed a systematic review of the literature published from 1945 to 2021 using the Web of Science. Based on the 101 articles reviewed, we found that publications about functional diversity of fishes have increased over time, mainly in Neotropical, Indomalayan and Palearctic regions. Most studies were conducted in lotic ecosystems, especially to assess environmental impacts such as biological invasions and land use. Functional diversity has been assessed mainly by morphological traits that reflect feeding and locomotion dimensions. Functional richness was the most common index used in the studies. Our findings suggest that political neglect and lack of investments may hamper the research development in several places. The missing information about the functional traits of many species may limit the use of the functional approach. We also highlight the need for the incorporation of functional diversity in conservation programs once functional diversity is a key facet of biodiversity to maintain freshwater ecosystem functioning.


A diversidade funcional tem sido avaliada principalmente através de traços funcionais morfológicos que refletem as dimensões da alimentação e locomoção. A Riqueza Funcional foi a métrica mais comumente usada nos estudos. Esses resultados sugerem que a negligência política e a falta de investimentos podem dificultar o desenvolvimento de pesquisas em diversas regiões. A falta de informações sobre os traços funcionais de muitas espécies limita o uso da abordagem funcional. Destaca-se também a necessidade de incorporar a diversidade funcional em programas de conservação, uma vez que a diversidade funcional é uma faceta chave da biodiversidade para manter o funcionamento dos ecossistemas de água doce.

The virus-to-prokaryote ratio (VPR) has been used in many ecosystems to study the relationship between viruses and their hosts. While high VPR values indicate a high rate of prokaryotes' cell lysis, low values are interpreted as a decrease in or absence of viral activity. Salar de Huasco is a high-altitude wetland characterized by a rich microbial diversity associated with aquatic sites like springs, ponds, streams and a lagoon with variable physicochemical conditions. Samples from two ponds, Poza Rosada (PR) and Poza Verde (PV), were analyzed by epifluorescence microscopy to determine variability of viral and prokaryotic abundance and to calculate the VPR in a dry season. In addition, to put Salar de Huasco results into perspective, a compilation of research articles on viral and prokaryotic abundance, VPR, and metadata from various Southern hemisphere ecosystems was revised. The ecosystems were grouped into six categories: high-altitude wetlands, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Southern Oceans and Antarctic lakes. Salar de Huasco ponds recorded similar VPR values (an average of 7.4 and 1.7 at PR and PV, respectively), ranging from 3.22 to 15.99 in PR. The VPR variability was associated with VA and chlorophyll a, when considering all data available for this ecosystem. In general, high-altitude wetlands recorded the highest VPR average (53.22 ± 95.09), followed by the Oceans, Southern (21.91 ± 25.72), Atlantic (19.57 ± 15.77) and Indian (13.43 ± 16.12), then Antarctic lakes (11.37 ± 15.82) and the Pacific Ocean (6.34 ± 3.79). Physicochemical variables, i.e., temperature, conductivity, nutrients (nitrate, ammonium, and phosphate) and chlorophyll a as a biological variable, were found to drive the VPR in the ecosystems analyzed. Thus, the viral activity in the Wetland followed similar trends of previous reports based on larger sets of metadata analyses. In total, this study highlights the importance of including viruses as a biological variable to study microbial temporal dynamics in wetlands considering their crucial role in the carbon budgets of these understudied ecosystems in the southern hemisphere.

Land use changes have led to the degradation of multiple ecosystem services and affected the quality of aquatic ecosystems. The aims of this study were (i) to assess the expansion of the agricultural border over the native forest of an Argentinean stream basin and (ii) to characterize the surface water quality, considering physicochemical parameters, and pesticide concentrations. The agricultural frontier expansion was estimated through the analysis of satellite image coverage. Samples of surface water were taken bimonthly for 2 years. The native forest cover decreased from 72% in 1987 to 60% in 2017 due to the sustained increase in agricultural activities. In surface water, the concentrations of cations decreased: Na > Ca > K > Mg, whereas those of anions decreased: HCO3 > > Cl > SO4 > PO4. The 84 surface water samples analyzed revealed 25 pesticides, including herbicides (44%), insecticides (28%), and fungicides (28%). Herbicides were detected in more than 60% of the samples. 2,4-D, atrazine, cyproconazole, diazinon, glyphosate, AMPA, and metolachlor were detected in all the study sites and sometimes, 2,4-D, atrazine, dicamba, and metolachlor concentrations exceeded the guideline levels. The high sampling frequency of this study and the two annual cycles of crops in the basin enabled sensing of pesticide molecules and concentrations that had not been previously detected, indicating diffuse contamination. These findings signal an emergent challenge on the Espinal agro-ecosystem integrity due to changes in land use.

BACKGROUND: Gerromorpha (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) comprises more than 2100 species of semiaquatic bugs, most of which have the ability to walk on the surface of the water. So far, 238 species have been recorded from Brazil, but several portions of the country remain poorly explored. The Metropolitan Region of Santarém (MRS), Pará State, Brazil, lacks faunistic and taxonomic studies concerning this group and the local fauna is under threat due to human actions. NEW INFORMATION: Aiming to fill gaps concerning the diversity and distribution of Gerromorpha in the Amazon, a survey of the semi-aquatic bugs from the MRS is presented. Collections were made in 33 aquatic ecosystems in the different phytophysiognomies within this area from July 2019 to October 2020. As a result, a checklist with 44 species recorded from the three municipalities of the MRS is presented. Furthermore, three new species of the genus Microvelia Westwood, 1834 (M.belterrensis sp. nov., M.hamadae sp. nov. and M.sousorum sp. nov.) are described, two species are recorded for the first time from Brazil (Microveliaaschnakiranae Makhan, 2014 and Rhagoveliagraziae Galindo-Malagón, Morales & Moreira, 2021), two from Pará State (Microvelialongipes Uhler, 1894 and Paraveliadilatata Polhemus & Polhemus, 1984) and 15 from the MRS (Brachymetralata Shaw, 1933, B.shawi Hungerford & Matsuda, 1957, Tachygerrisadamsoni (Drake, 1942), Microveliapulchella Westwood, 1834, Rhagoveliabrunae Magalhães & Moreira, 2016, R.evidis Bacon, 1948, R.jubata Bacon, 1948, Calliveliaconata (Hungerford, 1929), Oioveliacunucunumana Drake & Maldonado-Capriles, 1952, Paraveliabullialata Polhemus & Polhemus, 1984, Striduliveliaalia (Drake, 1957), S.stridulata (Hungerford, 1929), S.strigosa (Hungerford, 1929), S.tersa (Drake & Harris, 1941) and S.transversa (Hungerford, 1929)).

Introducción: Las cepas de Escherichia coli productoras de β-lactamasas de espectro extendido son patógenos multirresistentes y una de las bacterias que más contribuyen con la resistencia antibiótica bacteriana en la clínica. Sin embargo, se aíslan cada vez con más frecuencia de ambientes naturales, tales como los ecosistemas acuáticos en los cuales se emplea como un indicador de contaminación fecal. Objetivo: Evaluar la susceptibilidad a los antibióticos y la producción de enzimas ß-lactamasas de espectro extendido de aislados de Escherichia coli procedentes de ecosistemas dulceacuícolas de La Habana. Métodos: Se analizaron 43 aislados de E. coli provenientes de los ríos Almendares, Quibú y Luyanó de La Habana. Se determinó la susceptibilidad a 18 antibióticos y la producción fenotípica de ß-lactamasas de espectro extendido según las normas del Instituto de Estándares para el Laboratorio Clínico. La detección molecular de las enzimas se realizó mediante reacción en cadena de la polimerasa. Se calculó el índice de multirresistencia a los antibióticos y los patrones de resistencia de cada aislado de E. coli- ß-lactamasas de espectro extendido. Resultados: El 65 por ciento de los aislados de E. coli fueron resistentes al menos a un antibiótico y el 35 por ciento fueron sensibles a todos los antibióticos. El fenotipo ß-lactamasas de espectro extendido fue detectado en siete aislados; de estos, cuatro fueron portadores del gen bla CTX-M-1 y tres presentaron bla TEM. El 37 por ciento de los aislados de E. coli mostraron valores de índices de multirresistencia a los antibióticos menores que 0,22; el 16 por ciento de 0,22; el 9,3 por ciento mayor que 0,5; y el 5 por ciento mayor que 0,7. Los aislados de E. coli-BLEE mostraron corresistencia a las familias de las tetraciclinas, quinolonas, aminoglucósidos y macrólidos. Conclusiones: La presencia de aislados ambientales multirresistentes de E. coli productores de ß-lactamasas de espectro extendido en ecosistemas dulceacuícolas de La Habana destaca la necesidad de implementar estrategias de control para prevenir la diseminación de estos aislados en los ambientes naturales(AU)


Introduction: Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli strains are multiresistant pathogens and one of the bacteria contributing most greatly to bacterial antibiotic resistance in clinical practice. However, they are increasingly isolated from natural environments, such as aquatic ecosystems, where they are used as fecal pollution indicators. Objective: Evaluate antibiotic susceptibility and extended-spectrum ß-lactamase enzyme production in Escherichia coli isolates from freshwater ecosystems in Havana. Methods: An analysis was conducted of 43 E. coli isolates from the rivers Almendares, Quibú and Luyanó in Havana. Determination was made of susceptibility to 18 antibiotics and phenotypic production of extended-spectrum ß-lactamases according to standards from the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute. Molecular detection of the enzymes was performed by polymerase chain reaction. Estimation was carried out of the antibiotic multiresistance index and the resistance patterns of each extended-spectrum E. coli ß-lactamase isolate. Results: Of the E. coli isolates studied, 65 percent were resistant to at least one antibiotic, whereas 35 percent were sensitive to all antibiotics. The extended-spectrum ß-lactamase phenotype was detected in seven isolates, of which four were carriers of the gene bla CTX-M-1 and three contained bla TEM. 37 percent of the E. coli isolates displayed antibiotic multiresistance index values below 0.22, 16 percent of 0.22, 9.3 percent above 0.5 and 5 percent above 0.7. ESBL E. coli isolates displayed co-resistance to the families tetracyclines, quinolones, aminoglycosides and macrolides. Conclusions: The presence of multiresistant extended-spectrum ß-lactamase-producing environmental E. coli isolates in Havana freshwater ecosystems highlights the need to implement control strategies aimed at preventing the spread of these isolates in natural environments(AU)

RESUMEN

The indiscriminate use of glyphosate is one of the main agricultural practices to combat weeds and grasses; however, its incorrect application increases soil and water contamination caused by the product. This situation is even more critical due to its great versatility for use in different cultivars and at lower prices, making it the most used pesticide in the world. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of in-depth studies regarding the damage that its use may cause. Therefore, this review focused on the analysis of environmental impacts at the soil-water interface caused by the use of glyphosate. In this sense, studies have shown that the intensive use of glyphosate has the potential to cause harmful effects on soil microorganisms, leading to changes in soil fertility and ecological imbalance, as well as impacts on aquatic environments derived from changes in the food chain. This situation is similar in Brazil, with the harmful effects of glyphosate in nontarget species and the contamination of the atmosphere. Therefore, it is necessary to change this scenario by modifying the type of pest control in agriculture, and actions such as crop rotation and biological control.

Anthropogenic land use change (ALUC) satisfies human needs but also impacts aquatic ecosystems. Aquatic ecosystems are intrinsically linked with terrestrial landscapes, an association that is already recognized as a key factor to address future research and effective governance. However, the complexity and range of the impact of ALUC in aquatic ecosystems have been fundamental challenges and have implicitly routed the analysis to particular segments, drivers, management, or effects of the theme. In this study, we present an attempt to frame the subject in a broader context through a topic-based bibliometric analysis. Our aim is to identify possible biases and gaps in the current scientific literature and detect the main topics that have characterized the theme. Our results show an unequal distribution of articles by country when we analyzed the authors' affiliation and also a slight increase in contributions from social and economic disciplines, although they are still underrepresented. Moreover, we distinguish topics whose prevalence seems to change, especially those topics where the use of scenario analysis and multi-stressors are considered. We discuss the main biases and gaps revealed by our results, concluding that future studies on the impact of ALUC on aquatic ecosystems should better integrate social and economic disciplines and expand geographic frontiers.

Cry1C, Cry1F and Cry1Ab are insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) which are expressed in transgenic crops. Given the entry of these proteins into aquatic environments, it is relevant to evaluate their impacts on aquatic organisms. In this work, we sought to evaluate the effects of Cry1C, Cry1F and Cry1Ab on zebrafish embryos and larvae of a predicted worst-case scenario concentration of these proteins (set to 1.1 mg/L). For that, we coupled a traditional toxicity approach (the zebrafish embryotoxicity test and dosage of enzymatic biomarkers) to gel free proteomics analysis. At the concentration tested, these proteins did not cause adverse effects in the zebrafish early life stages, either by verifying phenotypic endpoints of toxicity or alterations in representative enzymatic biomarkers (catalase, glutathione-S-tranferase and lactate-dehydrogenase). At the molecular level, the Cry proteins tested lead to very small changes in the proteome of zebrafish larvae. In a global way, these proteins upregulated the expression of vitellogenins. Besides that, Cry1C e Cry1F deregulated heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (Hnrnpa0l and Hnrnpaba, respectively), implicated in mRNA processing and gene regulation. Overall, these data lead to the conclusion that Cry1C, Cry1F and Cry1Ab proteins, even at a very high concentration, have limited effects in the early stages of zebrafish life.

Abstract: We analyzed the overlap of the range of Pygochelidon melanoleuca in Brazil with active and planned hydropower plants in the country (current and future scenarios). We used the Random Forest, Maxent and Support Vector Machine algorithms to model the potential range of the species, which we then overlapped with the locations of active and planned hydropower plants in order to calculate how much the potential area of this species is and will be affected by them. Approximately 35% of active hydropower plants currently overlap with the potential distribution area of P. melanoleuca, and 44% of planned hydropower plants also coincide with this area. If the implementation of the planned hydropower plants occurs, the suitable habitat necessary for nesting and foraging of P. melanoleuca will be severely compromised.


Resumo: Analisamos a sobreposição da distribuição de Pygochelidon melanoleuca no Brasil com hidrelétricas ativas e planejadas no país (cenário atual e futuro). Utilizamos os algoritmos Random Forest, Maxent e Support Vector Machine para modelar a distribuição potencial da espécie, então sobrepomos com os locais das usinas hidrelétricas ativas e planejadas para calcular o quanto a área potencial desta espécie é e será afetada por elas. Aproximadamente 35% das hidrelétricas ativas estão sobrepostas com a área de distribuição potencial de P. melanoleuca e 44% das hidrelétricas planejadas coincidem com sua área. Se a implementação das hidrelétricas planejadas ocorrer, o habitat necessário para nidificação e forrageamento de P. melanoleuca estarão severamente comprometidos.

This study aimed to determine the concentration of metals in the water and in the liver tissue of fish (Anodus orinocensis, Hemiodus unimaculatus, Curimata vittata, and Plagioscion squamosissimus) in the lower Araguari River. Steps were also taken to estimate any difference in metal bioaccumulation in the liver of fish species at different trophic levels, determine any correlations between metals found in hepatic tissue of fish species relative to that found in river water, and evaluate the bioaccumulation factor. The metals analyzed in the water in the lower Araguari River (Cd, Pb, Fe, Hg, Cu, and Zn) exceeded the limits considered safe for aquatic life. We found a significant difference only in the bioaccumulation of Pb between A. orinocensis and C. vittata (F = 4.65, p = 0.005) and Cr between A. orinocensis and H. unimaculatus (F = 3.12, p = 0.03). Species of distinct trophic levels showed differences in metal concentration in liver. Cd and Cu showed bioaccumulation factor above 100, especially Cu with a relatively high value, for all fish species. The bioaccumulation of metals in the liver of fish species showed a positive correlation with the metals detected in the water of the Araguari River. In this sense, the lower course of the Araguari River is undergoing some type of environmental stress, making this study of additional valuable in diagnosing environmental quality pursuant to the development of environmental monitoring projects in order to guarantee the safety and maintenance of aquatic life.

Indicators of ecosystem health are effective tools to assess freshwater ecosystem impairment. However, they are scarcely used as a monitoring tool by local environmental agencies in Argentina. Here, we review the literature to analyze the use of ecosystem health indicators in freshwaters from Argentina. We found 91 scientific articles relating to the use of ecological indices to assess the impact of different environmental stressors in aquatic environments published between 1996 and 2019. We generated Google Earth map where we deployed the sampling sites and type of indices reported by each article. As biological indices were the most used, we also surveyed bioindication experts to gather information on their application. We found that most studies were concentrated mainly in Pampas (34%), Dry Chaco (20%), Espinal (12%), and Patagonian Steppe (10%) ecoregions. Biological indices (mainly with invertebrates) were more used than geomorphological or physico-chemical indices. Indices resulted useful to evaluate the impact of stressors in 63% of cases, being land use the most studied stressor. However, sampling design varied greatly among studies, making their comparison difficult. The information compiled here could help to the design of monitoring protocols, the adoption of regional indices, and the creation of a national inventory of ecosystem health status, which are mandatory to propose well-grounded conservation and management policies for freshwaters in Argentina.

Introduction: A large number of planktonic communities found in tropical lakes have not yet been recorded, limiting understanding of how these ecosystems function and of the role that organisms play within them. Objective: Add new records of previously described species and to contribute to the knowledge of the planktonic communities present in tropical mountain and lowland lakes of the northeast Colombian Andes. Methods: Planktonic samples were collected and physicochemical variables measured in nine tropical lakes. Organisms were identified and a bibliographic search was carried out in databases and research articles to the identification of the new records to Colombia. Results: We present the data corresponding to six physicochemical variables measured in tropical lakes of this region and expand the existing information on organisms present in tropical lakes with a list of 391 taxa (299 phytoplankton and 92 zooplankton). The proportion of planktonic species unique to tropical lakes and the low similarity between lake types found with a Jaccard analysis indicated high heterogeneity of ecological conditions in the studied lakes. Conclusions: The 391 taxa found and 15 new records contribute to the list of planktonic organisms present in tropical lakes located in high and low areas of the Colombian northeast Andes.


Introducción: En los lagos tropicales, un gran número de comunidades planctónicas no han sido registradas aún, limitando el entendimiento de como estos ecosistemas funcionan, y el papel que estos organismos cumplen dentro de él. Objetivo: Contribuir al conocimiento de las comunidades planctónicas presentes en lagos tropicales ubicados en zonas altas y bajas de los Andes nororientales colombianos y reportar nuevos registros de especies previamente descritas. Métodos: Se recolectaron muestras planctónicas, se tomaron variables fisicoquímicas en nueve lagos tropicales, se identificaron los organismos y se realizó una revisión en portales de datos y artículos científicos con el fin de conocer cuales eran nuevos registros para Colombia. Resultados: Se presentan los datos correspondientes a seis variables fisicoquímicas para lagos tropicales de esta región y se amplía información que existe sobre organismos presentes en lagos tropicales mediante la elaboración una lista con 391 taxones (299 fitoplancton y 92 zooplancton). La proporción de taxones únicos identificados y la baja similitud encontrada en el análisis de Jaccard indican alta heterogeneidad de condiciones ecológicas en los nueve lagos tropicales estudiados. Conclusiones: La identificación de los 391 taxones y los 15 nuevos registros, contribuyen al listado de organismos planctónicos presentes en lagos tropicales, ubicados en zonas altas y bajas del noreste de los Andes colombianos.
