RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Preconceptual care aiming to improve health is influenced by various factors including health literacy. Considering the importance and necessity of high quality preconceptual care, this study aimed to determine the relationship between health literacy and receiving components of preconceptual care prior to pregnancy. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 693 participants with pregnancies of less than 14 weeks gestation referred to health centers and gynecologists in Shiraz city, Iran. Multi-stage sampling was done from May 2021 to February 2022 in 18 comprehensive urban health centers and 20 gynecology offices via proportional allocation method. The data collection tool comprised a questionnaire consisting of 3 parts: (1) individual and fertility characteristics, (2) information related to the components of preconceptual care and (3) health literacy for Iranian adults. This was completed by individual participants via the self-reporting method. RESULTS: The majority of participants were between 30 and 34 years old. They also identified as women with a university education and were predominantly unemployed. The mean health literacy of participants was 76.81%. Health literacy obtained the highest mean score in the dimension of 'understanding' and the lowest mean score in the dimension of 'access'. The frequency of preconceptual counseling, folic acid supplement consumption, exercise, blood testing, dental visits, genetic counseling, Pap smear testing and rubella, diphtheria, and hepatitis vaccinations prior to pregnancy was 66.8%, 53.8%, 45.6%, 71.86%, 44.44%, 12%, 53.4%, 10.83%, respectively. Many (> 64%) received preconceptual care at specialist gynecology offices. Results demonstrated that health literacy had a statistically significant relationship with preconceptual care, folic acid consumption, exercise and dental care, (p < 0.001), along with blood testing and Pap smear testing (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Overall, our results demonstrate that despite health literacy being optimal, uptakes of some components of preconceptual care are low. As such, it will be important to further raise awareness of the importance of preconceptual care for people prior to pregnancy as a priority in health promotion and education.

RESUMEN

Excessive application of mineral fertilizers has accelerated soil acidification in China, affecting crop production when the pH drops below a critical value. However, the contributions of natural soil acidification, induced by leaching of bicarbonate, and anthropogenic causes of soil acidification, induced by nitrogen (N) transformations and removal of base cations over acid anions, are not well quantified. In this study, we quantified soil acidification rates, in equivalents (eq) of acidity, by assessing the inputs and outputs of all major cations and anions, including calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, ammonium, nitrate, bicarbonate, sulphate, phosphate and chloride, for 13 long-term experimental sites in southern China. The acidification rates strongly varied among fertilizer treatments and with the addition of animal manure. Bicarbonate leaching was the dominant acid production process in calcareous soils (23 keq ha-1 yr-1) and in non-calcareous paddy soils (9.6 keq ha-1 yr-1), accounting for 80 % and 68 % of the total acid production rate, respectively. The calcareous soils were strongly buffered, and acidification led no or a limited decline in pH. In contrast, N transformations were the most important driver for soil acidification at one site with upland crops on a non-calcareous soil, accounting for 72 % of total acid production rate of 8.4 keq ha-1 yr-1. In this soil, the soil pH considerably decreased being accompanied by a substantial decline in exchangeable base cation. Reducing the N surplus decreased the acidification rate with 10 to 54 eq per kg N surplus with the lowest value occurring in paddy soils and the highest in the upland soil. The use of manure, containing base cations, partly mitigated the acidifying impact of N fertilizer inputs and crop removal, but enhanced phosphorus (P) accumulation. Combining mineral fertilizer, manure and lime in integrative management strategies can mitigate soil acidification and minimize N and P losses.

RESUMEN

Meat is often contaminated by food-borne pathogens, resulting in significant economic losses. Linalool from plant essential oils (EOs) has been reported to have excellent antibacterial properties. Therefore, this study aims to elucidate the mechanism of linalool against Shigella sonnei (S. sonnei) based on proteomic and physiological indicators. The results indicated that linalool severely perturbed the expression levels of intracellular proteins, of which 208 were up-regulated and 49 were down-regulated. Moreover, linalool exerted its inhibitory effect mainly through the induction of amino acid limitation and insufficient energy levels based on the pathways involved in differential expressed proteins (DEPs). After 8 h, alkaline phosphatase (AKP) leakage increased 20.96 and 21.52-fold in the MIC and 2MIC groups while protein leakage increased 2.17 and 2.50-fold, respectively, which revealed the potential of linalool on cell structure damage combined with nucleic acid leakage. In addition, the ATP content decreased to 36.92% and 18.84% in the MIC and 2MIC groups, respectively when processed for 8 h. In particular, linalool could effectively control the quality change of fresh beef by measuring pH, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), total viable counts (TVC) while not affecting its sensory acceptability based on the result of sensory evaluation. This research provides theoretical insights for the development of linalool as a new natural antibacterial agent.

RESUMEN

Maternal diets during pregnancy and lactation are key determinants that regulate the development of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in offspring. l-malic acid (MA) was previously reported to improve antioxidant capacity and aerobic metabolism. However, the effects of maternal MA consumption on the metabolic features of offspring remain largely unexplored. Herein, through pig models consuming MA-enriched diets during late pregnancy and lactation, we found that maternal MA consumption potentiated the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacity of sows, thereby improving their reproductive performance and the growth performance of piglets. Maternal MA consumption also induced a transition of slow-twitch to fast-twitch fibers in the early life of offspring. Along with muscle growth and fiber-type transition, insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, including aerobic metabolism and glycolysis, were improved in the skeletal muscle of offspring. An untargeted metabolomic analysis further revealed the contribution of modified amino acid metabolism to the improved aerobic metabolism. Mechanistically, maternal MA consumption remodeled colonic microbiota of their offspring. Briefly, the abundance of Colidextribacter, Romboutsia, and Family_XIII_AD3011_group increased, which were positively associated with the antioxidant capacity and glucose metabolism of skeletal muscles. A decreased abundance of Prevotella, Blautia, Prevotellaceae_NK3B31_group, and Collinsella was also detected, which were involved in less insulin sensitivity. Notably, milk metabolites, such as ascorbic acid (AA) and granisetron (GS), were found as key effectors regulating the gut microbiota composition of piglets. The properties of AA and GS in alleviating insulin resistance, inflammation, and oxidative stress were further verified through mice treated with high-fat diets. Overall, this study revealed that maternal MA consumption could modulate the inflammatory response, antioxidant capacity, and glucose metabolism by regulating the gut microbiota of offspring through the vertical transmission of milk metabolites. These findings suggest the potential of MA in the prevention and treatment of MetS in early life.

RESUMEN

High acid-consumption and lipid oxidation are challenges when recovering functional proteins from herring co-products via pH-shift-processing. Here, lingonberry press-cake (LP), which is abundant in organic acids and phenolics, was added to alkali-solubilized herring-co-product-proteins (2.5-30 % LP per dry weight) aiming to aid protein precipitation, save hydrochloric acid (HCl) and provide oxidative stability. The results revealed 5-30 % LP addition reduced HCl-consumption by 13-61 % and 19-79 % when precipitating proteins at pH 5.5 and 6.5, respectively. Higher LP% decreased protein content and lightness of protein isolates but raised the lipid content. Precipitation at pH 6.5 used less acid, reduced total protein yield and raised moisture content and darkness of isolates. Contrary to controls, lipid oxidation-derived volatiles did not develop in protein isolates precipitated with 10 % and 30 % LP, neither during the process itself nor during 21 days on ice. Altogether, LP was identified as a promising all-natural processing-aid to use during herring protein isolation.

RESUMEN

Τhe present study investigates, from an environmental protection viewpoint, the efficiency of sequential column leaching of two different Greek laterites, i.e. a limonitic ore from central and a saprolitic ore from northern Greece. First, the most refractory limonitic laterite is leached in the first column for 15 days and the obtained pregnant leach solution (PLS) is further used for the leaching of the easier to treat saprolitic ore in the second column, thus achieving a significantly reduced acid consumption. The main parameters affecting the process efficiency, i.e. acid molarity (1.5 or 3 mol/L H2SO4) and addition of sodium sulfite (Na2SO3) in the leaching solution were studied. The extraction of Ni, Co, Fe, Al, Mg, Mn and Ca was determined by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), while the characterization of the ores and final residues was carried out by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTA), and Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis. The results confirm the efficiency of the proposed green approach, which with the use of leaching solution containing 1.5 mol/L H2SO4 and 20 g/L Na2SO3 resulted in 73.8 % Ni, 71.6 % Co and 8.4 % Fe extraction after a short period of time (33 days), while the acid consumption, which is a serious environmental concern, was very low and did not exceed 300 kg/t ore. Overall, the proposed process not only improves the efficiency of leaching of different types of laterites for the recovery of both Ni and Co but also reduces the environmental impacts due to the significantly lower acid consumption.

RESUMEN

Our case-control study, aiming at identifying the risk factors for placental abruption (PA), looked at variables including maternal age, daily transportation means, folic acid consumption, smoking, past-history of infertility, number of antenatal visits done, presence of pre-eclampsia and umbilical cord insertion. Significant risk factors for PA were frequent transportation by motorbikes, consumption of haematinic preparation not containing folic acid, passive smoking, past-history of infertility, pre-eclampsia and marginal cord insertion. Pregnant women should be counselled about the above-mentioned risk factors.

RESUMEN

Acute-stress situations in vertebrates induce a series of physiological responses to cope with the event. While common secondary stress responses include increased catabolism and osmoregulatory imbalances, specific processes depend on the taxa. In this sense, these processes are still largely unknown in ancient vertebrates such as marine elasmobranchs. Thus, we challenged the lesser spotted catshark (Scyliorhinus canicula) to 18 min of air exposure, and monitored their recovery after 0, 5, and 24 h. This study describes amino acid turnover in the liver, white muscle, gills, and rectal gland, and plasma parameters related to energy metabolism and osmoregulatory imbalances. Catsharks rely on white muscle amino acid catabolism to face the energy demand imposed by the stressor, producing NH4+. While some plasma ions (K+, Cl- and Ca2+) increased in concentration after 18 min of air exposure, returning to basal values after 5 h of recovery, Na+ increased after just 5 h of recovery, coinciding with a decrease in plasma NH4+. These changes were accompanied by increased activity of a branchial amiloride-sensitive ATPase. Therefore, we hypothesize that this enzyme may be a Na+/H+ exchanger (NHE) related to NH4+ excretion. The action of an omeprazole-sensitive ATPase, putatively associated to a H+/K+-ATPase (HKA), is also affected by these allostatic processes. Some complementary experiments were carried out to delve a little deeper into the possible branchial enzymes sensitive to amiloride, including in vivo and ex vivo approaches, and partial sequencing of a nhe1 in the gills. This study describes the possible presence of an HKA enzyme in the rectal gland, as well as a NHE in the gills, highlighting the importance of understanding the relationship between acute stress and osmoregulation in elasmobranchs.

RESUMEN

Chemically defined (CD) media are routinely used in the production of biologics in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cell culture and provide enhanced raw material control. Nutrient optimized CD media is an important path to increase cell growth and monoclonal antibody (mAb) productivity in recombinant CHO cell lines. However, nutrient optimization efforts for CD media typically rely on multifactorial and experimental design of experiment approaches or complex mathematical models of cellular metabolism or gene expression systems. Moreover, the majority of these efforts are aimed at amino acids since they constitute essential nutrients in CD media as they directly contribute to biomass and protein production. In this study, we demonstrate the utilization of multivariate data analytics (MVDA) coupled with amino acid stoichiometric balances (SBs) to increased cell growth and mAb productivity in efforts to support CD media development efforts. SBs measure the difference between theoretical demand of amino acids and the empirically measured fluxes to identify various catabolic or anabolic states of the cell. When coupled with MVDA, the statistical models were not only able to highlight key amino acids toward cell growth or productivity, but also provided direction on metabolic favorability of the amino acid. Experimental validation of our approach resulted in a 55% increase in total cell growth and about an 80% increase in total mAb productivity. Increased specific consumption of stoichiometrically balanced amino acids and decreased specific consumption of glucose was also observed in optimized CD media suggesting favorable consumption of desired nutrients and a potential for energy redistribution toward increased cellular growth and mAb productivity.

RESUMEN

Depolymerization of high-molecular weight organic nitrogen (N) represents the major bottleneck of soil N cycling and yet is poorly understood compared to the subsequent inorganic N processes. Given the importance of organic N cycling and the rise of global change, we investigated the responses of soil protein depolymerization and microbial amino acid consumption to increased temperature, elevated atmospheric CO2 , and drought. The study was conducted in a global change facility in a managed montane grassland in Austria, where elevated CO2 (eCO2 ) and elevated temperature (eT) were stimulated for 4 years, and were combined with a drought event. Gross protein depolymerization and microbial amino acid consumption rates (alongside with gross organic N mineralization and nitrification) were measured using 15 N isotope pool dilution techniques. Whereas eCO2  showed no individual effect, eT had distinct effects which were modulated by season, with a negative effect of eT on soil organic N process rates in spring, neutral effects in summer, and positive effects in fall. We attribute this to a combination of changes in substrate availability and seasonal temperature changes. Drought led to a doubling of organic N process rates, which returned to rates found under ambient conditions within 3 months after rewetting. Notably, we observed a shift in the control of soil protein depolymerization, from plant substrate controls under continuous environmental change drivers (eT and eCO2 ) to controls via microbial turnover and soil organic N availability under the pulse disturbance (drought). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study which analyzed the individual versus combined effects of multiple global change factors and of seasonality on soil organic N processes and thereby strongly contributes to our understanding of terrestrial N cycling in a future world.

RESUMEN

Acid-base reactivity is a fundamental property of sediments and is responsible for sediments' multiple roles in aquatic ecosystems. However, little information currently exists about the composition, magnitude, and change of the available acid consumption capacity (AACC) of sediments. To optimize reaction conditions, we developed operational procedures to determine AACC using base titration to recover surplus acid in suspensions. We characterized the sediment AACC of Dianchi Lake (DL), Daduhe River (DR), Tuojiang River (TR), Honghu Lake (HL), Wuhan Donghu Lake (DhL), and Taihu Lake (TL) in the Yangtze River Basin, China. The procedure demonstrated that reacting 40 mL 0.1 M HCl with fresh sediments equivalent to 1.0 g dry weight for 4 h and recovering surplus acid in the suspension by NaOH titration to an endpoint pH of 3.0 could determine sediment AACC. Sediment AACC in the Yangtze River Basin had high regional variability. The mean magnitude of AACC among sites was ranked DL > DR > DhL > TR > HL > TL, which is extremely similar to their geographical location from the upper to lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin. Qualitative results from acid titration curves showed that more components contributed to AACC in DL, DR, TR, and DhL sediments than to those in HL and TL sediments. The correlation between AACC and the total amount of multivalent cations released indicated that AACC depended significantly on labile acid-soluble minerals that contain multivalent cations (Fe3+, Fe2+, Ca2+, Al3+, Mg2+, and Mn2+) (p < 0.01). Based on the contribution percentages of multivalent cations to AACC, sediment AACC of six water bodies were divided into two types: Ca-Mg dominated (DL, DR, and TR) and Fe-Al dominated (HL, DhL, and TL). We suggest that sediment AACC complexing with pH can contribute to a better description of the acid-base characteristics of sediments.

RESUMEN

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) were successfully produced with good nanoscales and dispersibility, using a recycled sulfuric acid (H2SO4) hydrolysis process. This method, at the cost of an overall 25% increase in the hydrolysis time, could significantly reduce the dosage of H2SO4 by approximately 40% without affecting the per-batch yield and performance of CNCs. The obtained CNCs with an average diameter of 6.0-6.5 nm and an average length of 126-134 nm, were successfully applied in the preparation of oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsions via high-pressure homogenization. The emulsions exhibited good storage stability when the concentration of CNC was 1.0 wt%. Further, understanding the wetting behaviors of surface modified CNCs with solvent is critical for the functional designing of Pickering emulsion. Hence, we gained insights into the wetting of hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces of sulfate modified CNCs with water and organic solvent (hexadecane) droplets, using molecular dynamic simulation. The results showed that both surfaces had hydrophilic as well as lipophilic properties. Although the sulfate-grafted surface was more hydrophilic than unmodified CNC, substantial local wetting heterogeneities appeared for both solvents. It provides a deeper understanding of the interfacial interactions between modified CNCs and solvent molecules at the molecular level.

RESUMEN

Gluconic acid consumption under controlled conditions by a Saccharomyces cerevisiae flor yeast was studied in artificial media. Gluconic acid was the sole carbon source and the compounds derived from this metabolism were tracked by endo-metabolomic analysis using a Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MSD) coupled methodology. After 6 days, about 30% of gluconic acid (1.5 g/L) had been consumed and 34 endo-metabolites were identified. Metabolomic pathway analysis showed the TCA cycle, glyoxylate-dicarboxylate, glycine-serine-threonine, and glycerolipid metabolic pathway were significantly affected. These results contribute to the knowledge of intracellular metabolomic fluctuations in flor yeasts during gluconic acid uptake, opening possibilities for future experiments to improve their applications to control gluconic acid contents during the production of fermented beverages.

RESUMEN

Liberibacter crescens is the only cultured member of its genus, which includes the devastating plant pathogen "Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus," associated with citrus greening/Huanglongbing (HLB). L. crescens has a larger genome and greater metabolic flexibility than "Ca Liberibacter asiaticus" and the other uncultured plant-pathogenic Liberibacter species, and it is currently the best model organism available for these pathogens. L. crescens grows slowly and dies rapidly under current culture protocols and this extreme fastidiousness makes it challenging to study. We have determined that a major cause of rapid death of L. crescens in batch culture is its alkalinization of the medium (to pH 8.5 by the end of logarithmic phase). The majority of this alkalinization is due to consumption of alpha-ketoglutaric acid as its primary carbon source, with a smaller proportion of the pH rise due to NH3 production. Controlling the pH rise with higher buffering capacity and lower starting pH improved recoverability of cells from 10-day cultures by >1,000-fold. We have also performed a detailed analysis of L. crescens growth with total cell numbers calibrated to the optical density and the percentage of live and recoverable bacteria determined over 10-day time courses. We modified L. crescens culture conditions to greatly enhance survival and increase maximum culture density. The similarities between L. crescens and the pathogenic liberibacters make this work relevant to efforts to culture the latter organisms. Our results also suggest that growth-dependent pH alteration that overcomes medium buffering should always be considered when growing fastidious bacteria.IMPORTANCELiberibacter crescens is a bacterium that is closely related to plant pathogens that have caused billions of dollars in crop losses in recent years. Particularly devastating are citrus losses due to citrus greening disease, also known as Huanglongbing, which is caused by "Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus" and carried by the Asian citrus psyllid. L. crescens is the only close relative of "Ca Liberibacter asiaticus" that can currently be grown in culture, and it therefore serves as an important model organism for the growth, genetic manipulation, and biological control of the pathogenic species. Here, we show that one of the greatest limitations to L. crescens growth is the sharp increase in alkaline conditions it produces as a consequence of consumption of its preferred nutrient source. In addition to new information about L. crescens growth and metabolism, we provide new guidelines for culture conditions that improve the survival and yield of L. crescens.

RESUMEN

The production of malolactic starter cultures requires the obtention of suitably large biomass at low-cost. In this work it was possible to obtain a good amount of biomass, at laboratory scale, of two enological strains of Lb. plantarum, by formulating a culture medium based on whey permeate (WP), a by-product of the cheese industry usually disposed as waste, when this was supplemented with yeast extract (Y), salts (S) and Tween 80 (T) (WPYST). Bacteria grown in WPYST medium exhibited good tolerance to stress conditions of synthetic wine (pH 3.5, ethanol 13% vol/vol). However, when WPYST was added with 8% vol/vol ethanol, cultures inoculated in synthetic wine, showed a lower viability and capacity to consume L-malic acid than when they were cultured in WPYST without ethanol. Subsequently, strains grown in WPYST were inoculated in sterile wine samples (final stage of alcoholic fermentation) of the red varietals Merlot and Pinot noir, and incubated at laboratory scale. Cultures from WPYST, inoculated in Pinot noir wine, showed a better performance than bacteria grown in MRS broth, and exhibited a consumption of L-malic acid higher than 90%. However, cultures from WPYST or from MRS broth, inoculated in sterile Merlot wine, showed a lower survival. This study allowed the formulation of a low-cost culture medium, based on a by-product of the food industry, which showed to be adequate for the growth of two enological strains of Lb. plantarum, suggesting their potentiality for application in the elaboration of malolactic starter cultures.

RESUMEN

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of freeze-drying in the presence of trehalose as a cryoprotectant, followed by incubation in synthetic wine, on surface damage, viability and l-malic acid consumption of the oenological strain Oenococcus oeni UNQOe 73.2. After freeze-drying, no significant differences were observed in the number of viable cells (for both acclimated and non-acclimated cultures) respect to the fresh culture. In contrast, loss of viability was observed after wine incubation for 24 h, being acclimated freeze-dried cells the best conditions for this. After the preservation process, small changes in cell morphology were observed by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The Zeta potential and AFM showed that 24 h of wine incubation was enough to induce several cell surface modifications. Plate count data allowed us to establish that surface damage is an important factor for loss of viability, regardless of the acclimation treatment. Although the number of surviving O. oeni cells decreased dramatically after incubation in synthetic wine for 15 days, the consumption of l-malic acid was higher than 70%, with freeze-dried cells showing a better performance than fresh cultures. These results demonstrate that O. oeni freeze-dried cultures could be applied to direct wine inoculation, to conduct malolactic fermentation, maintaining its technological properties and reducing the time and costs of the winemaking process.

RESUMEN

A new microtitration system based on the counting of titrant droplets has been developed for precise on-site analysis. The dropping rate was controlled by inserting a capillary tube as a flow resistance in a laboratory-made micropipette. The error of titration was 3% in a simulated titration with 20 droplets. The pre-addition of a titrant was proposed for precise titration within an error of 0.5%. The analytical performances were evaluated for chelate titration, redox titration and acid-base titration.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND/AIM: Most of the previous investigators have used various types of media for the culture of nerve cells. In order to optimize the culture conditions, we compared the growth rate and amino acid consumption by two popular neuron models, rat PC12 and human SH-SY5Y, grown in DMEM or DMEM: Ham's F-12 (1:1): non-essential amino acids, supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum (referred to DMEM and Mix, respectively). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cell growth was monitored by the MTT method. Amino acids in the culture medium were quantitated by amino acid analysis after deproteinization. RESULTS: Efficient cell attachment could be achieved even if PC12 cells were inoculated at extreme lower cell density in a non-coated plain dish, without addition of its condition medium. Both PC12 and SH-SY5Y cells proliferated up to slightly higher cell density in DMEM than in Mix. Approximately 2-fold higher utilization rate of glutamine and essential amino acids was observed in DMEM. Amyloid peptides such as Aß1-42 and Aß25-35 suppressed their growth nearly by 50%. CONCLUSION: The present study suggests the usefulness of DMEM for the study of searching neuroprotective substances, based on its favorable effects on cell attachment, cell growth and amino acid utilization as well as amyloid peptide sensitivity.

RESUMEN

Nutrient recovery from human urine is a promising pretreatment of domestic wastewater and provides a sustainable recyclability of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). In this study, we present a method to recover all nutrients from hydrolysis urine (HU) in the form of solid products by combining acidification with evaporation-crystallization. The effect of initial pH (pHinit.) on N retention was investigated, and the optimal pHinit. was further determined by analysis of N retention efficiency. Additionally, crystallization process and product composition based on different pH-adjusted acids were also compared. The results revealed that pHinit. of HU was the key factor for N retention, and the optimal pHinit. was 4. In addition, compared with HCl and H2SO4, acidification by H3PO4 could effectively reduce energy consumption and improve nutrient content in urine-derived solid products (UDSPs) but increase the acid consumption. The major compositions (mass percentage, %) in UDSPs-Cl, UDSPs-S, and UDSPs-P were salammoniac (80%), lecontite (41%) and ammonium nitrate sulfate (30%), and biphosphammite (84%), respectively. The results also demonstrated that the method of mixing of UDSPs-Cl/UDSPs-S and UDSPs-P and addition of fillers such as calcite, ground limestone, or ground dolomite into them is suitable for improving nutrient balance and fertilizer efficiency.

Neural tube defects (NTDs) include a wide spectrum of congenital malformations. Themost common is the open spina bifida that occurs with varying degrees of paralysis of thelower extremities and bladder and bowel disorders. Currently it is possible to reduce NTDsby folic acid (FA). The main objective or this study was to determine periconceptionalknowledge of FA. We applied a questionnaire to 800 postpartum women, hospitalized in 3different hospitals of Asunción-Paraguay, Hospital de Clínicas (Department of Gynecologyand Obstetrics), Paraguayan Red Cross and Hospital San Pablo (MSP y BS), from February1 to November 31, 2003. Most were between 20 and 24 years (29,8%), 54.3% had a bachelor degree. The pregnancy was planned in 21.8%. To the question "did you hearabout FA" 66 (8.2%) of the 800 postpartum women responded affirmatively. Of these, 50(75.6% of this subgroup) knew it is a vitamin, 39 (59.1%) know that FA is useful toprevent NTDs and 26 (39.4%) that should be consumed before the beginning of thepregnancy. In this study, unprecedented in Paraguay, postpartum women had very littleknowledge about what is and the benefits of FA in the primary prevention of NTDs, whichshows the importance of insisting on programs and health education information to allwomen of reproductive age.
