RESUMEN

To assess micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS), degree of conversion (DC), microleakage (ML) antibacterial efficacy, and adhesive remnant index (ARI) of orthodontic brackets to enamel with different concentrations of photoactivated riboflavin-doped hydroxyapatite (HA) nanospheres (NS) (0%,1%,5% and 10%) and 0.5 wt% RF alone in orthodontic adhesive. Samples were included on the predefined inclusion criteria and positioned up to the cementoenamel junction (CEJ). Hydroxy apatite nanospheres (HANS) commercially bought were doped with RF. Surface characterization of HANS and RF-doped HANS were assessed along with EDX analysis. Samples were grouped based on experimental orthodontic adhesive modification. Group 1: Transbond XT no modification, Group 2: experimental Transbond XT 0.5 wt% RF, Group 3: experimental Transbond XT 0.5 wt% RF-doped 1% HANS, Group 4: experimental Transbond XT 0.5 wt % RF-doped 5% HANS and Group 5: Experimental Transbond XT 0.5 wt% RF-doped 10% HANS. Brackets were placed based on different adhesive modifications and samples underwent thermocycling. Samples were evaluated for µTBS, DC, and ML. The type of failure was assessed using ARI. Adhesive modified and un-modified in four different concentrations (0%, 1%, 5%, and 10%) and 0.5 wt% RF only were used to test efficacy against Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans). The survival rate of S.mutans and ML was determined using the Kruskal-Wallis Test. For the analysis of µTBS, ANOVA was employed, followed by a post-hoc Tukey HSD multiple comparisons test. The highest µTBS and lowest ML were observed in Group 2 experimental Transbond XT 0.5 wt% RF only. The lowest µTBS, highest ML, and lowest DC was seen in Group 5 experimental Transbond XT 0.5 wt% RF-doped 10% HANS. Samples in Group 1 in which Transbond XT was used as adhesive demonstrated significantly the highest microbial count of S.mutans and DC. Photoactivated RF-doped HANS in 1% and 0.5 wt% Riboflavin alone in orthodontic adhesive for metallic bracket bonding improved micro tensile bond strength, ML, DC, and antibacterial scores. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: The highest µTBS and lowest ML were observed in Group 2 experimental Transbond XT 0.5 wt% RF only. The lowest µTBS, highest ML, and lowest DC was seen in Group 5 experimental Transbond XT 0.5 wt% RF-doped 10% HA-NS. Samples in Group 1 in which Transbond XT was used as adhesive demonstrated significantly the highest microbial count of S.mutans and DC.

Introduction Preventing enamel demineralization (white spot lesions or WSLs) around the brackets during and after orthodontic therapy has been a challenging problem. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) show antibacterial effects against cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus (S.) mutans. Materials and methods In this study, researchers modified Transbond XT adhesive (Sigma Aldrich, St. Louis, Missouri, USA) by adding different concentrations of ZnO nanoparticles, i.e., 0.1% and 0.5wt%, in two experimental groups and a control group. We performed Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy for physio-structural characterization and investigated antibacterial ability by disc diffusion and colony-forming tests. We conducted shear bond strength and adhesive remnant index to determine the mechanical characteristics. Results The development and size of the inhibition zone were greatly dependent on the concentration of ZnO nanoparticles in the disc agar diffusion test. All ZnO NP-based experimental adhesives reduced the colony numbers for S. mutans. For S. mutans, the composite comprising 0.5wt% ZnO nanoparticles significantly reduced colony counts. The control group exhibited the maximum mean shear bond strength, whereas 0.5wt% nanoparticles composite had the lowest number. Conclusion Adding ZnO as nanofillers imparts antibacterial properties to the orthodontic adhesives. An increase in the concentration of ZnO nanoparticles in orthodontic adhesive increases its antibacterial properties. We found the shear bond strength of the novel composite with up to 0.5wt% ZnO nanoparticles to be in a clinically acceptable range.

Objectives. We aimed to compare the prevalence of co-infections, pathogens, and factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 acute respiratory infection (ARI) and non-SARS-CoV-2 ARI, among hospitalized children. Methods. We conducted an observational cross-sectional study of hospitalized children <15 years with ARI, and lasting respiratory symptoms <14 days, using polymerase chain reaction on nasopharyngeal specimens. Results. Of the 184 children with ARI analyzed, 122 were infected with SARS-CoV-2 and 62 were not. SARS-CoV-2 ARI had a significantly lower rate of co-infection than non-SARS-CoV-2 ARI (2.5% vs14.5%, P = .003). SARS-CoV-2 ARI children were significantly associated with a less empirical antibiotics (aOR = 0.09, CI = 0.03-0.21; P = .000), more pneumonia (aOR = 5.15, CI = 1.77-14.95; P = .003), and more abnormal chest X-ray (aOR = 2.81, CI = 1.38-5.71; P = .004). Conclusions. Although SARS-CoV-2 ARI in hospitalized children was associated with pneumonia and abnormal chest x-rays, empirical antibiotics may not be necessary for treating mild to moderate cases.

BACKGROUND: Increasing data suggests that androgen receptor signaling may play an important role in the carcinogenesis of urothelial cancers. While the chemoprotective effect of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (5-ARi) on bladder cancer risk in men with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) has been explored with conflicting results, the evidence regarding 5-ARi treatment, and the risk of incident Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma (UTUC) development is lacking. Therefore, our objective was to investigate the impact of the 5-ARi administration on the incidence of new UTUC cases using a large US database. METHODS: The MerativeTM Marketscan® database was used to identify men ≥ 50 years old with a diagnosis of BPH and an active 5-ARi prescription between 2007 and 2021 and were subsequently matched with paired controls. A multivariable Cox regression model was implemented to ascertain the association of 5-ARi and/or alpha-blocker (α-B) medications on the incidence of UTUC. Additional subgroup analyses were conducted based on exposure risk (with a 2-year threshold) to investigate the relationship between 5-ARi and UTUC over time. RESULTS: Overall, n=1,103,743 men BPH without prescriptions for BPH, n=31,142 men on 5-ARi, and n=160,049 using 5-ARi + α-B were identified. Over the follow-up period, a total of n=4,761 patients were diagnosed with UTUC. After matching, UTUC incidence ranged from 0.36% to 0.41% in men without active BPH therapy vs. 0.30% and 0.52% for the 5-ARi and 5-ARi + α-B groups, respectively. In multivariable analysis, the chemoprotective effect on UTUC risk was not observed for either 5-ARi monotherapy (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR]: 0.91, 95% CI: 0.58-1.44) or 5-ARi + α-B combination (aHR: 1.02, 95% CI: 0.87-1.19). This remained true for both short-term (≤ 2 years) and long-term (> 2 years) follow-up periods. CONCLUSIONS: The use of 5-ARi for BPH, whether used alone or in combination with α-B, is not associated with incident UTUC.

The results of orthodontic therapy largely depend, among other factors, on the preparation of the tooth enamel itself and the choice of material used to bond orthodontic brackets. The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the shear bond strength (SBS) and adhesive remnant index (ARI) score of thermo-cured glass-ionomers on different pretreated enamel, in comparison with the commonly used composite cement. Three commercially available nano-ionomer or highly viscous glass-ionomer cements (EQUIA Forte® Fil, EQUIA Fil, Ketac Universal) and two types of compo-sites (Heliosit Orthodontic, ConTec Go!) were investigated in this study. The research involved two hundred human premolars. The teeth were cleaned and polished, then randomly divided into five groups according to the enamel preparation method and the type of material. The enamel was treated in three different ways: polyacrylic acid, phosphoric acid, 5% NaOCl + etching with phosphoric acid, and a control group without treatment. Glass-ionomer cement was thermo-cured with heat from a polymerization unit during setting. Statistical analysis was performed using a Chi-square test and one-way ANOVA for independent samples. Spearman's Rho correlation coefficient was used to examine the relationship. Regardless of the material type, the results indicated that the weakest bond between the bracket and tooth enamel was found in samples without enamel pretreatment. The majority of the materials stayed on the brackets in samples without enamel preparation, according to ARI scores. The study's findings demonstrated that the strength of the adhesion between the bracket and enamel is greatly influenced by enamel etching and glass-ionomer thermo-curing. Clinical investigations would be required to validate the outcomes.

Objectives: Underweight remains the primary public health concern among under-five-year-old children in Ethiopia, despite numerous government-implemented nutrition-specific and sensitive interventions. Therefore, this study aimed to assess underweight and associated factors among children in South Ethiopia. Methods: Between March and April 2021, 717 children in the South Ari district who were between the ages of 6 and 59 months participated in a cross-sectional study. To choose a sample of households containing a minimum of one child between the ages of 6 and 59 months, a multi-stage sampling procedure was used. Data were collected by interviewer-administered structured questionnaires from the mothers of the children. To determine the factors associated with being underweight, a binary logistic regression analysis was built. All variables with a p-value <0.25 in the bivariable analysis were entered into a multivariable logistic regression analysis. To assess the strength of the association, an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval was used. With a p-value below 0.05, statistical significance was declared. Results: The prevalence of underweight was determined to be 29.7% (95% CI: 26.5%, 33.2%). Child age 6-23 months [adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 0.28; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.18, 0.44], food insecurity (AOR = 1.48; 95% CI: 1.04, 2.10), sub-optimal child dietary diversity (AOR = 1.44; 95% CI: 1.01, 2.03), birth interval <24 months (AOR = 2.49; 95% CI: 1.75, 3.54), and common childhood illness (AOR = 2.21; 95% CI: 1.52, 3.21) were associated with being underweight. Conclusion: Underweight among children is predicted by household food insecurity, suboptimal dietary diversity, and common childhood illnesses, necessitating further efforts to improve food security and manage common illnesses.

Acute respiratory infection (ARI) is a communicable disease of the respiratory tract that implies impaired breathing. The infection can expand from one to the neighboring areas at a region-scale level through a human mobility network. Specific to this study, we leverage a record of ARI incidences in four periods of outbreaks for 42 regions in Jakarta to study its spatio-temporal spread using the concept of the epidemic forest. This framework generates a forest-like graph representing an explicit spread of disease that takes the onset time, spatio-temporal distance, and case prevalence into account. To support this framework, we use logistic curves to infer the onset time of the outbreak for each region. The result shows that regions with earlier onset dates tend to have a higher burden of cases, leading to the idea that the culprits of the disease spread are those with a high load of cases. To justify this, we generate the epidemic forest for the four periods of ARI outbreaks and identify the implied dominant trees (that with the most children cases). We find that the primary infected city of the dominant tree has a relatively higher burden of cases than other trees. In addition, we can investigate the timely ( R t ) and spatial reproduction number ( R c ) by directly evaluating them from the inferred graphs. We find that R t for dominant trees are significantly higher than non-dominant trees across all periods, with regions in western Jakarta tend to have higher values of R c . Lastly, we provide simulated-implied graphs by suppressing 50% load of cases of the primary infected city in the dominant tree that results in a reduced R c , suggesting a potential target of intervention to depress the overall ARI spread.

Aerosols greatly influence precipitation characteristics, thereby impacting the regional climate and human life. As an indispensable factor for cloud formation and a critical radiation budget regulator, aerosols can affect precipitation intensity, frequency, geographical distribution, area, and time. However, discrepancies exist among current studies due to aerosol properties, precipitation types, the vertical location of aerosols and meteorological conditions. The development of technology has driven advances in current research, but understanding the aerosol effects on precipitation remain complex and challenging. This paper revolves around the following topics from the two perspectives of Aerosol-Radiation Interaction (ARI) and Aerosol-Cloud Interaction (ACI): (1) the influence of different vertical locations of absorbing/scattering aerosols on the atmospheric thermal structure; (2) the fundamental theories of ARI reducing surface wind speed, redistributing water vapour and energy, and then modulating precipitation intensity; (3) different aerosol types (absorbing versus scattering) and aerosol concentrations causing different precipitation diurnal and weekly variations; (4) microphysical processes (cloud water competition, invigoration effect, and evaporation cooling) and observational evidence of different effects of aerosols on precipitation intensity, including enhancing, inhibiting, and transitional effects from enhancement to suppression; and (5) how meteorology, water vapor and dynamics influencing the effect of ACI and ARI on precipitation. In addition, this review lists the existing issues and future research directions for attaining a more comprehensive understanding of aerosol effects on precipitation. Overall, this review advances our understanding of aerosol effects on precipitation and could guide the improvement of weather and climate models to predict complex aerosol-precipitation interactions more accurately.

OBJECTIVES: To report epidemiological and virological results of an outbreak investigation of influenza-like illness (ILI) among refugees in Northern Italy. STUDY DESIGN: Outbreak investigation of ILI cases observed among nearly 100 refugees in Northern Italy unvaccinated for influenza. METHODS: An epidemiological investigation matched with a differential diagnosis was carried out for each sample collected from ILI cases to identify 10 viral pathogens (SARS-CoV-2, influenza virus type A and B, respiratory syncytial virus, metapneumovirus, parainfluenza viruses, rhinovirus, enterovirus, parechovirus, and adenovirus) by using specific real-time PCR assays according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) protocols. In cases where the influenza virus type was identified, complete hemagglutinin (HA) gene sequencing and the related phylogenetic analysis were conducted. RESULTS: The outbreak was caused by influenza A(H3N2): the attack rate was 83.3% in children aged 9-14 years, 84.6% in those aged 15-24 years, and 28.6% in adults ≥25 years. Phylogenetic analyses uncovered that A(H3N2) strains were closely related since they segregated in the same cluster, showing both a high mean nucleotide identity (100%), all belonging to the genetic sub-group 3C.2a1b.2a.2, as those mainly circulating into the general population in the same period. CONCLUSIONS: The fact that influenza outbreak strains as well as the community strains were genetically related to the seasonal vaccine strain suggests that if an influenza prevention by vaccination strategy had been implemented, a lower attack rate of A(H3N2) and ILI cases might have been achieved.

The lodging of barley significantly limits its potential yield, leads to the deterioration of grain quality, and complicates mechanized harvesting. More than 30 dwarfness and semi-dwarfness genes and loci are known for barley, and their involvement in breeding can solve the problem of lodging. The most common dwarfing alleles are of the genes sdw1/denso (HvGA20ox2), uzu1 (HvBRI1), and ari-e (HvDep1). The aim of this study was the design of dCAPS markers for the sdw1.c and ari-e.GP alleles and the molecular screening of barley accessions from the VIR collection for identifying these and other dwarfing alleles commonly used in breeding. Two dCAPS markers have been developed to identify the sdw1.c allele of the HvGA20ox2 gene and ari-e.GP of HvDep1. These dCAPS markers and two known from the literature CAPS and dCAPS markers of the alleles sdw1.a/sdw1.e, sdw1.c, sdw1.d, and uzu1.a were used in the molecular screening of 32 height-contrasting barley accessions. This made it possible to identify the accessions with alleles sdw1.a/sdw1.e, sdw1.c, and sdw1.d of the HvGA20ox2 gene, as well as accessions with a combination of sdw1.c and uzu1.a alleles of the genes HvGA20ox2 and HvBRI1. A comparison of the results of genotyping and phenotyping showed that the presence of dwarfing alleles in all genotypes determines high or medium lodging resistance regardless of the influence of weather conditions. Twelve accessions were found to contain the new allele sdw1.ins of the HvGA20ox2 gene, which differs from the known allele sdw1.c by a larger size of PCR products. It is characterized by the Thalos_2 transposon insertion; the subsequent GTTA insertion, common with the sdw1.c allele; and by a single-nucleotide G→A substitution at the 165 position.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19/SARS CoV-2 continue to pose a threat to human health and placed millions of livelihoods at risk. Surveillance for the other circulating seasonal viruses during this pandemic is necessary to understand the manifestations of the CoV-2 pandemic and their incidence. METHODS: A detailed study survey was performed on subjects with acute respiratory infections (ARI) and severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) in the King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research, Chennai from April 2020 to March 2022. A total of 1480 patients presenting with either SARI (41.8%) or ARI (58.1%) were screened for SARS CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses. The SARS CoV-2 real-time PCR was carried out using ICMR-approved kits and other respiratory viruses were detected using the commercially available real-time kit. RESULTS: Out of the 620 SARI patients, 198 (31.9%) were positive for SARS CoV-2 RNA. Out of the 860 ARI patients, 352 (40.9%) were positive for SARS CoV-2 RNA. Among the 550 patients positive for SARS CoV-2, 7 (1.2%) were positive coexistent with other respiratory viruses. Among the 930 patients with negative SARS CoV-2, 222 (23.8%) were positive for other common respiratory viruses (p = 0.001). Influenza viruses (36.9%) predominated followed by RSV (31.9%) and Parainfluenza virus (13.5%). CONCLUSION: This study suggests that viral coinfections are significantly higher among SARS CoV-2 negative individuals (23.8 vs. 1.2%). It is possibly due to viral interference and the competitive advantage of SARS CoV-2 in modulating the host immunity. Continuous surveillance is necessary for understanding the viral co-infection mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: India is facing a burdensome public health challenge due to air pollution, with a particularly high burden of acute respiratory infections (ARI) among children. To address this issue, our study aims to evaluate the association between exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ARI incidence in young children in India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our study used PM2.5 data provided by the Atmospheric Composition Analysis Group at Washington University to assess the association between PM2.5 exposure and ARI incidence in 223,375 children sampled from the 2019-2021 Demographic Health Survey in India. We employed the generalized estimating equation and reported odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for a 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 and quartiles of PM2.5 exposure. RESULTS: Each 10 µg/m3 increase in PM2.5 levels was associated with an increased odds of ARI (OR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.19-1.27). A change from the first quartile of PM2.5 (2.5-34.4 µg/m3) to the second quartile (34.5-51.5 µg/m3) of PM2.5 was associated with a two-fold change (OR: 2.06, 95% CI: 1.60-2.66) in the odds of developing ARI. Similarly, comparing the first quartile to the fourth quartile of PM2.5 exposure (78.3-128.9 µg/m3) resulted in an over four-fold increase in the odds of ARI (OR: 4.45, 95% CI: 3.37-5.87). CONCLUSION: Mitigation efforts must be continued implementing higher restrictions in India and to bring new interventions to ensure safe levels of air for reducing the burden of disease and mortality associated with air pollution in India.

BACKGROUND: Diarrhoea and pneumonia are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children aged <5 y (under five) globally. This study sought to investigate the prevalence and determinants of diarrhoea and acute respiratory infections (ARIs) among children under five in West Africa. METHODS: The most recent demographic and health survey (DHS) standard for 13 West African countries was used in the study. We calculated the prevalence of diarrhoea and ARIs (2 wk prior to the survey) and performed multivariable complex logistic regression analysis to identify possible predictors of diarrhoea and ARIs. RESULTS: The weighted prevalence of diarrhoea and ARI was 13.7% and 15.9%, respectively. The prevalence of comorbid diarrhoea and ARI was 4.4%. Children aged <2 y (p<0.001), mothers aged <30 y (p<0.003), mothers without formal education (p<0.001), poor households (p<0.001) and poor nutritional status, wasting (p=0.005) and underweight (p<0.001), were the independent predictors of diarrhoea. The independent predictors of ARIs were children with no childhood vaccinations (p=0.002), use of solid fuel in the household (p=0.007), being underweight (p=0.05) and diarrhoea (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The findings imply the need for holistic public health interventions such as increased vaccination coverage, population-based nutritional programmes and campaigns on the use of cleaner cooking fuel targeted at high-risk subgroups in the population to reduce the burden and adverse effects of diarrhoea and ARIs in the West African region.

Introduction@#A healthy home is a physical building that meets health criteria. The surrounding environment benefits physical and mental health and provides an appropriate social environment for family and individual health. Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) is one of the effects of diseases caused by houses that do not meet healthy housing standards. ARI incidence was ranked 5th in Banten Province, with a prevalence of 17.7%. This study aims to determine whether healthy home indicators affect the incidence of ARI in assisted families in Tangerang Regency, Banten Province. @*Material and Methods@#This analytic study with a cross-sectional approach was conducted on 115 Kresek Village and Kemiri Village residents, who were taken using a purposive sampling technique. Methods of data analysis using univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analysis using software IBM-SPSS version 29.0 and Microsoft Excel.@*Results@#ARI was found in 50.4% of people in the past three months. There was a significant effect (P<0.05) between the incidence of ARI and indicators of a healthy home, specifically the area of ventilation in the house (P=0.002, OR:3.5, 95% CI 2.1 - 28.4) and opening the windows in the family room (P=0.030, OR:3.5, 95% CI 1.3 - 10.78).@*Conclusion@#The indicator that most dominantly influenced the incidence of ARI in this study was the ventilation indicator. Thus, a strategy is needed to increase the use of ventilation by the people of Tangerang Regency.

Exposure to household air pollution (HAP) accounted for the loss of 86 million healthy lives in 2019, with almost half of all deaths due to lower respiratory infection among children under 5 years of age. Similarly, the situation in Punjab - Pakistan's largest province - is also not promising. This study was conducted to examine household energy consumption and respiratory symptoms among children under the age of five in rural and urban areas of Punjab. Using data from the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) 2017-18, logistic regression models were applied to the data of a sample of 35,000 children under the age of five living in households with polluting heating fuels. A hypothesis was formulated to investigate the relationship between polluting heating activities and respiratory infections among children under five. Those Children who live in households having traditional space heaters without chimneys are 50% more likely to have symptoms of Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) compared to those whose households have chimneys with traditional space heaters. When households utilize polluting heating fuel, the likelihood of children experiencing rapid, shortness of breath increases by 49%, and the likelihood of children displaying ARI symptoms characterized by coughing rises by approximately 30%. This study proposed a complete banning of polluting heating activities and replacing it with cleaner ones using financial incentives. It is pertinent to raise awareness campaigns majorly focusing on the guidelines to adopt better heat output with less harmful emissions.

To meet the 2030 goal to end all types of malnutrition, thoroughly investigating and addressing context-specific factors of undernutrition is crucial. Therefore, this study assessed the prevalence of undernutrition and associated factors among children aged 6-23 months in South-East Ethiopia. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted on 580 randomly sampled mother-child pairs in February 2022. Socio-demographic, dietary intake, household food security (HFS), maternal knowledge and practices of child feeding, and the child's weight and height data were collected. A multivariable logistic regression analysis was done. The prevalence of stunted, wasted, and underweight children was 32⋅1, 7, and 9 %, respectively. Being male (AOR = 1⋅75), not using the growth monitoring and promotion (GMP) service (AOR = 1⋅50), household food insecurity (HFI) (AOR = 1⋅67), lack of improved water (AOR = 2⋅26), and bottle-feeding (AOR = 1⋅54) were significantly associated with stunting. Being male (AOR = 3⋅02), having low maternal knowledge on child-feeding practices (AOR = 3⋅89), not listening to the radio/television (AOR = 3⋅69), having a history of fever (AOR = 3⋅39), bottle-feeding (AOR = 3⋅58), and HFI (AOR = 3⋅77) were significantly predicted wasting. Being male (AOR = 3⋅44), not using GMP service (AOR = 2⋅00), having a history of fever (AOR = 4⋅24), lack of knowledge on optimal breastfeeding duration (AOR = 3⋅58), low maternal knowledge on child feeding (AOR = 2⋅21), HFI (AOR = 2⋅04), and lack of improved water (AOR = 3⋅00) showed significant association with underweight. In conclusion, stunting is alarmingly common while wasting and underweight are sub-optimal. Prevention of infectious disease, providing basic education for fathers, ensuring HFS; enhancing media access, maternal knowledge about IYCFP and improving water access; and GMP service utilisation are crucial to improve child nutrition.

BACKGROUND: Bangladesh has seen a significant decline in child mortality in recent decades, but morbidity among children <5 y of age remains high. The aim of this analysis was to examine trends and identify risk factors related to child morbidity in Bangladesh. METHODS: This analysis is based on data from four successive cross-sectional Bangladesh Demographic and Health Surveys for the years 2007, 2011, 2014 and 2017-18. Several count regression models were fitted and the best model was used to identify risk factors associated with morbidity in children <5 y of age. RESULTS: According to the results of the trend analysis, the prevalence of non-symptomatic children increased and the prevalence of fever, diarrhoea and acute respiratory infections (ARIs) decreased over the years. The Vuong's non-nested test indicated that Poisson regression could be used as the best model. From the results of the Poisson regression model, child age, sex, underweight, wasted, stunting, maternal education, wealth status, religion and region were the important determinants associated with the risk of child morbidity. The risk was considerably higher among women with a primary education compared with women with a secondary or greater education in Bangladesh. CONCLUSIONS: This analysis concluded that child morbidity is still a major public health problem for Bangladesh. Thus it is important to take the necessary measures to reduce child morbidity (particularly fever, diarrhoea and ARI) by improving significant influencing factors.

INTRODUCTION: While there is extensive literature discussing the link between various respiratory infections and risk factors that contribute to low vitamin D levels, there is still no consensus on this relationship. The aim of this study was to test whether low vitamin D levels are associated with pneumonia and acute respiratory infections (ARI) and to identify risk factors for low vitamin D levels in children with these conditions. METHODOLOGY: The study was conducted at the Muratsan Hospital in Yerevan from February to December 2017. It included 140 randomly selected children aged 1 to 5 years, half of whom had pneumonia and the other half had ARI. Based on serum vitamin D levels, the children were further divided into groups with low (52 patients with pneumonia and 38 patients with ARI) and normal vitamin D levels (18 patients with pneumonia and 32 patients with ARI). Factors such as feeding, age, gender, and mother's education were included as indicators of risk for low vitamin D. RESULTS: The difference between the mean values of vitamin D in groups of children with pneumonia and ARI was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Feeding was positively, and age was negatively associated with the level of vitamin D (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: We found that children with pneumonia had a lower vitamin D level. We also found that poor nutrition and the age of the child (1 to 5 years) were risk factors for low vitamin D levels with respiratory infections.

Based on the monitoring data of five pollutants in 168 key cities under air pollution prevention and control in China from 2015 to 2020, using the MAKESENS model and the aggregate risk index(ARI), this study quantitatively analyzed the spatial and temporal distribution characteristics of air pollution and health risks in China and the six urban agglomerations. The results showed that:① PM2.5 pollution was the most serious pollution in Chinese key cities. Only 15% of the cities' six-year average concentrations of PM2.5 reached the National Secondary Standard, followed by that of NO2; 77% of the cities' six-year average concentrations of NO2 reached the National Secondary Standard. The urban agglomerations of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Fenwei plain had the most serious air pollution, and the six-year average concentrations of PM2.5, SO2, CO, and NO2 were higher than those of other urban agglomerations. ② The concentrations of PM2.5, SO2, CO, and NO2 in key cities of China showed a decreasing trend, whereas the concentration of O3 in other urban agglomerations showed an increasing trend, except in the Chengdu-Chongqing urban agglomeration. The concentration of SO2 in the urban agglomerations of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Fenwei plain changed the most significantly. ③ The health risk of air pollution in the key cities of China generally showed a decreasing trend, with a sharp decline from 2017 to 2018, and the population exposed to extremely high risks dropped from 160 million to 32.54 million. The urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River had the most significant decline in health risks, whereas the key cities in China faced higher health risks in spring and winter seasons. ④ The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Fenwei plain urban agglomerations had the highest health risks, and the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River had the lowest; O3 gradually replaced PM2.5 as the main pollutant affecting the health risk. These results can provide a reference for evaluating the effectiveness of urban air pollution control in China during the 13th Five-Year Plan period.

The increasing demand for orthodontic treatments due to the high prevalence of malocclusion has inspired clinicians and material scientists to investigate innovative, more effective, and precise bonding methods with reduced chairside time. This study aimed at comparing the shear bond strength (SBS) of metal and ceramic brackets bonded to enamel using the indirect bonding technique (IDB). Victory Series metal brackets (Metal-OPC, Metal-APC) and Clarity™ Advanced ceramic brackets (Ceramic-OPC) (3M Unitek, Monrovia, CA, USA) were bonded indirectly to extracted human premolars through the etch-and-rinse technique. A qualitative assessment of the enamel surface using microscopic methods was performed, and the amount of residual adhesive was reported as per the adhesive remnant index (ARI). Moreover, the bracket surface was evaluated with SEM-EDS. The highest SBS mean values were observed in the Ceramic-OPC group (16.33 ± 2.01 MPa), while the lowest ones were obtained with the Metal-OPC group (11.51 ± 1.40 MPa). The differences between the Metal-AOPC vs. Metal-APC groups (p = 0.0002) and the Metal-OPC vs. Ceramic-OPC groups (p = 0.0000) were statistically significant. Although the Ceramic-OPC brackets bonded indirectly to the enamel surface achieved the highest SBS, the enamel damage was significantly higher compared to that of the other groups. Thus, considering the relatively high bond SBS and favourable debonding pattern, Metal-APC brackets bonded indirectly may represent the best choice.
