BACKGROUND: The textile industry is the second risk factor for bladder cancer, after smoking. Previous studies focused on the impact of exposure to high concentrations of bladder carcinogenic chemicals in the textile dyeing industry on the elevation of bladder cancer biomarkers. This study aimed to evaluate bladder carcinogenic air pollutants in a textile dyeing factory and investigate its role and the role of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH vit. D) on cancer bladder biomarkers in exposed workers. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Particulate and vapor forms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were monitored in the printing, dyeing, and preparing sections of a textile factory. Bladder tumor antigen (BTA), nuclear matrix protein 22 (NMP-22), and 25-OH vit. D were estimated in all the exposed workers (147 exposed workers) and in workers not occupationally exposed to chemicals (130 unexposed workers). RESULTS: Aromatic bladder carcinogenic compounds were either in low concentrations or not detected in the air samples of working areas. BTA and NMP-22 of exposed workers were not significantly different from the unexposed. However, 25-OH vit. D was significantly lower in the exposed than unexposed workers. There was a significant inverse correlation between 25-OH vit. D and duration of exposure in exposed workers. CONCLUSION: The mean levels of PAHs and VOCs were within the safe standard levels in the working areas. The non-significant difference in BTA and NMP-22 between the exposed and unexposed groups suggests the presence of occupational exposures to safe levels of bladder carcinogenic aromatics, while the significantly lower 25-OH vit. D levels among the exposed than the unexposed groups could suggest the potential association of 25-OH vit. D with occupational exposures to low levels of PAHs and VOCs, and this association was found to be inversely correlated with the duration of exposures. Accordingly, more specific predictor tests must be applied for early diagnosis of bladder cancer among the exposed workers.

Objective: This study aimed to analyse the association between lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) and 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25[OH]D) and early diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and evaluate the potential roles of these two biomarkers in the clinical diagnosis of DKD. Methods: A total of 422 inpatients with T2DM were retrospectively enrolled between January 2018 and March 2022 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University. The baseline clinical parameters of each patient were determined, and their demographic characteristics were extracted from the hospital information system. The patients were separated into groups according to serum Lp-PLA2 and 25(OH)D levels and binary logistic regression analysis was used to determine independent predictors of early DKD incidence. Results: Levels of Lp-PLA2 significantly increased and those of 25(OH)D significantly decreased with DKD progression (both P < 0.001). Lp-PLA2 concentrations were positively correlated with albuminuria levels (r = 0.37, P < 0.001), whereas 25(OH)D levels were negatively correlation (r = -0.34, P < 0.001). The incidence of DKD was higher in the Lp-PLA2 elevated and 25(OH)D deficient groups (all P < 0.001). Body mass index, systemic immune-inflammatory index, serum uric acid, C-peptide, and triglyceride-glucose indices were positively associated with Lp-PLA2 levels (all P < 0.001) and negatively associated with 25(OH)D (all P < 0.05). Furthermore, Lp-PLA2 was an independent risk factor (OR = 1.003, P = 0.015), and 25(OH)D was an independent protective factor (OR = 0.937, P = 0.008) for early DKD occurrence in binary logistic regression analysis. The area under the curve for the combination of Lp-PLA2 and 25(OH)D for diagnosing DKD was 0.867, with a sensitivity of 70.4 % and a specificity of 89.5 %. Conclusions: Increased serum Lp-PLA2 and decreased 25(OH)D levels are risk factors for early DKD in patients with T2DM. The combined detection of Lp-PLA2 and 25(OH)D may enhance the diagnostic efficacy of DKD.

Target values for 25-hydroxy vitamin D and 1,25(OH)2D or 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D remain a topic of debate among clinicians. We analysed data collected from December 2012 to April 2020 from two cohorts. Cohort A, comprising 455,062 subjects, was used to investigate the relationship between inflammatory indicators (white blood cell [WBC] count and C-reactive protein [CRP]) and 25(OH)D/1,25(OH)2D. Cohort B, including 47,778 subjects, was used to investigate the connection between 25(OH)D/1,25(OH)2D and mineral metabolism markers (phosphate, calcium, and intact parathyroid hormone [iPTH]). Quadratic models fit best for all tested correlations, revealing U-shaped relationships between inflammatory indicators and 25(OH)D and 1,25(OH)2D. Minimal CRP and WBC counts were observed at 1,25(OH)2D levels of 60 pg/mL and at 25(OH)D levels of 32 ng/mL, as well as of 42 ng/mL, respectively. iPTH correlated inversely with both 1,25(OH)2D and 25(OH)D, while phosphate as well as calcium levels positively correlated with both vitamin D forms. Calcium-phosphate product increased sharply when 25(OH)D was more than 50 ng/mL, indicating a possible risk for vascular calcification. Multiple regression analyses confirmed that these correlations were independent of confounders. This study suggests target values for 25(OH)D between 30-50 ng/mL and for 1,25(OH)2D between 50-70 pg/mL, based particularly on their associations with inflammation but also with mineral metabolism markers. These findings contribute to the ongoing discussion around ideal levels of vitamin D but require support from independent studies with data on clinical endpoints.

Vitamin D plays a role in inflammatory skin disease, but the exact mechanisms and the clinical significance remain unclear. According to the free hormone hypothesis, it is the free concentration of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) that is biologically active. Vitamin D-binding protein (DBP) acts as the major transporter of vitamin D in the circulation, and DBP concentration defines the free 25(OH)D levels. DBP levels are elevated in various inflammatory conditions, including psoriasis. Narrowband-ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) is the most widely used phototherapy and is an established first-line treatment for psoriasis and atopic dermatitis (AD), often used before proceeding to systemic treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of NB-UVB phototherapy on DBP and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels, as markers of systemic inflammation, in inflammatory skin disease. Thirty adults (psoriasis (n = 20) and AD (n = 10)) were treated with NB-UVB. Serum DBP, hsCRP, total and free 25(OH)D, and 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D (1,25(OH)2D) were measured before and after NB-UVB. Disease severity was assessed with Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI), SCORing Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD), and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). DBP decreased in psoriasis patients and varied with no clear trend in AD patients. HsCRP decreased in both groups, but this did not reach statistical significance. PASI, SCORAD, and VAS improved, and vitamin D levels increased after NB-UVB. Sub-analysis indicated a better response to NB-UVB for patients with vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency compared to vitamin D-sufficient patients. The decrease in DBP after NB-UVB in psoriasis patients suggests a potential systemic anti-inflammatory effect of phototherapy. Measurement of vitamin D levels may potentially serve as a tool to identify patients who would derive the greatest benefit from NB-UVB phototherapy.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the link between 25-hydroxy vitamin D and serum asprosin in individuals with type 2 diabetes within the community. The goal was to provide a foundation for clinical interventions. Methods: Between November 2019 and July 2021, data from 463 patients with type 2 diabetes were consistently gathered at a community health service station in Southeast Shanxi Province. General information and laboratory metrics were compiled, including serum asprosin levels. The participants were categorized based on three serum asprosin quantiles, allowing for a comparison of various factors among the groups. The correlation between serum asprosin levels and other factors was analyzed. Employing a general linear model, the connection between 25-hydroxy vitamin D and serum asprosin levels was studied. Utilizing three quantiles of 25-hydroxy vitamin D, serum asprosin was treated as the dependent variable, while 25-hydroxy vitamin D served as the independent variable for linear regression analysis. Results: As serum asprosin increased, there were gradual increments in age, disease duration, SBP, BMI, WC, creatinine, and SUA levels (P<0.05). Conversely, HbA1c, HDL-C, GFR, and 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels exhibited gradual declines (P<0.05). Age, 25-hydroxy vitamin D, SUA, creatinine, and LDL-C emerged as independent influencing factors for serum asprosin. Across the 1st to 3rd 25-hydroxy vitamin D quantiles, elevated 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels correlated with a gradual reduction in mean serum asprosin (P<0.05). Conclusion: Serum asprosin levels demonstrate an inverse correlation with 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels in community-dwelling individuals with type 2 diabetes. Serum asprosin levels might independently contribute to 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels.

Introduction: Globally, up to 76.6% of the population may be affected by vitamin D (VD) deficiency, which has been linked to increased morbidity and mortality from COVID-19. This underscores the importance of further research into VD supplementation, particularly for health care workers, who are at higher risk due to indoor work environments and dietary challenges associated with shift schedules. Objective: This study aimed to identify factors associated with VD deficiency in Mexican health care workers exposed to SARS-CoV-2. Materials and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study from June 2020 to January 2021 among frontline health care workers treating hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Blood samples were collected to measure 25-hydroxy VD levels via radioimmunoassay. We also assessed previous COVID-19 infection and comorbidities that could influence VD levels. Results: The study included 468 health care workers. The median serum VD concentration was 16.6 ng/mL. VD deficiency was found in 69.4% (n = 325) of participants, while only 5.1% (n = 24) had normal levels. Those with type 2 diabetes (13.3 ng/mL vs. 17.1 ng/mL) or obesity (15.7 ng/mL vs. 17.1 ng/mL) had significantly lower VD levels than their counterparts (p < 0.001 and p = 0.049, respectively). No significant differences were found among participants with high blood pressure. Multivariate analysis revealed that type 2 diabetes was independently associated with VD deficiency. Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of VD deficiency among health care workers, which is potentially linked to both personal health factors and occupational conditions.

Introduction: Cardiovascular and noncardiovascular comorbidities have been recognized as predictors of clinical response in patients receiving cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT). However, data on vitamin D as a predictor of CRT response are conflicting. Method: We identified studies from MEDLINE and Embase databases, searching from inception to May 2024, to investigate the association between 25-OH vitamin D levels before CRT implantation and outcomes. Studies had to report 25-OH vitamin D levels or the proportion of patients with vitamin D insufficiency and categorize outcomes as CRT responders or nonresponders. We extracted mean 25-OH vitamin D and standard deviations for both groups from each study and calculated the pooled mean difference (MD). We also retrieved risk ratios, and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between vitamin D insufficiency and lack of CRT response, combining them using the generic inverse variance method. Results: Our meta-analysis included four studies. CRT responders had higher levels of 25-OH vitamin D than nonresponders, with a pooled MD of 8.04 ng/mL (95% CI: 3.16-12.93; I 2 = 48%, p < .001). Patients with vitamin D insufficiency before implantation had higher odds of lacking response to CRT, with a pooled RR of 3.28 (95% CI: 1.43-7.50; I 2 = 0%, p = .005) compared to those with normal vitamin D. Conclusions: CRT responders had higher 25-OH vitamin D levels compared to nonresponders. Vitamin D insufficiency was associated with a higher risk of nonresponse to CRT. These findings highlight the importance of monitoring and managing vitamin D levels in these patients.

Background: 25-hydroxy vitamin-D (25(OH)D) deficiency is prevalent worldwide including India. Earlier some cross-sectional studies have discussed 25(OH)D deficiency and its prevalence. The correlation of 25(OH)D with seasonal variation has been reported rarely in India. To determine the 25(OH)D levels and seasonal changes of 25(OH)D status at a tertiary care hospital in North-western India. Materials and methods: 25(OH)D assessments performed in laboratories between 2018 and 2020 was acquired using hospital records. A total of 11,428 assays of serum 25(OH)D were analyzed in the study. Subjects were divided into three groups based on the International Endocrine Society's recommendation for serum 25(OH)D level. The 25(OH)D deficiency <20 ng/ml, insufficiency 20-29 ng/mL and sufficiency ≥30 ng/mL was defined. The months have been separated into the following seasons to analyze seasonal trends: Summer/monsoon (April-September), and winter/spring (October-March). Results: The median 25(OH)D was 17.2 ng/mL. We observed the prevalence of 60 %, 24.1 % & 15.9 % of 25(OH)D deficiency, 25(OH)D insufficiency, and sufficiency respectively in the total number of individuals tested. 56 % male and 63 % females were 25(OH)D deficient. Notably, the lowest median 25(OH)D value was found in the 21-30 age group (14.8 ng/mL). A significant difference in 25(OH)D levels between the summer (18.7 ng/mL) and winter (15.8 ng/mL) seasons has been noticed. Discussion: Current study revealing that 25(OH)D deficiency is common in all age groups and genders, according to our findings. Surprisingly, the lowest levels were reported in young adults. Seasonal variation has an impact on 25(OH)D status, however in all seasons 25(OH)D levels are lower than reference intervals. These findings suggest that the criteria for determining the state of 25(OH)D insufficiency and deficiency in the Indian population should be reconsidered.

BACKGROUND: The number of football teams in senior categories has increased. As outdoor sports entail players being exposed to sunlight, playing football may contribute to maintaining vitamin D stores and body mineral density while preventing osteoporosis. This study aimed to determine the bone mineral density and vitamin D levels in middle-aged premenopausal female football players. METHODS: Participants were premenopausal females in their 40s. We evaluated bone mineral density of the second to the fourth lumbar vertebrae and femoral neck, serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25-OHD) levels, which is an indicator of vitamin D stores, and body composition. In addition, we administered a questionnaire survey on exercise habits and lifestyle. Ninety-two participants were categorised into three groups: the football group (n = 27), volleyball group (n = 40), and non-exercise group (n = 25). RESULTS: Bone mineral density was higher in the football and volleyball groups than in the non-exercise group (P < 0.01). The volleyball group had a significantly higher bone mineral density of the lumbar spine and femoral neck than the non-exercise group (P < 0.01). The football group had a significantly higher bone mineral density of the femoral neck than the non-exercise group (P < 0.01). Although the football group had played fewer years than the volleyball group (P < 0.01), serum 25-OHD levels were the highest in the football group and were significantly higher than those in the volleyball and non-exercise groups (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Middle-aged premenopausal football players had higher body vitamin D levels and bone mineral densities than non-active females. These results suggest that playing football may contribute to the prevention of osteoporosis. TRIAL REGISTRATION: UMIN Clinical Trials Registry UMIN000054235. 2024/04/23. Retrospectively registered.

OBJECTIVE: To study the association between altered vitamin D profiles and different indices as well as clinical features of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), including antimüllerian hormone (AMH) levels, phenotypes (A [hyperandrogenism {HA} + ovulatory dysfunction {OD} + polycystic ovarian morphology {PCOM}], B [HA + OD], C [HA + PCOM], and D [OD + PCOM]), insulin resistance, oligomenorrhea, hyperandrogenism, obesity indices, and stress biomarkers in the ethnic population of West Bengal. DESIGN: Case-control observational study. SETTING: Outpatient department of gynecology and obstetrics and environing. PARTICIPANTS (PATIENTS AND CONTROL): Sample size: case group (PCOS, n = 160), age: 16-38 years, and their gender, age, as well as ethnicity-matched healthy control (n = 160). INTERVENTION(S): In this observational study, a structured questionnaire for menstrual status and to determine the scores of cutaneous manifestations, a bioelectrical impedance analyzer for measurement of anthropometric indices, relevant biochemical assessments (vitamin D, AMH, insulin, glucose, and other associated hormonal profiles), statistical software for the social sciences, and Microsoft Office Excel were used to evaluate as well as analyze different indices. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S): Study of the association of vitamin D deficiency with differential manifestations of PCOS such as phenotypes of the syndrome, altered AMH levels, and risk of insulin resistance. An attempt has been made to determine the cutoff value of AMH of the patients with PCOS belonging to the ethnic population of West Bengal using receiver operating characteristic (ROC). RESULT(S): Vitamin D deficiency was found to be directly correlated with AMH level in PCOS phenotype A (67%), oligomenorrhea, and PCOM, along with a substantial agonistic relationship with insulin resistance in the PCOS population under study. In the PCOS phenotype B, the AMH level was highest, with a cutoff value of 5.27 ng/mL (asymptotic sig. = 0.000, 95% confidence interval: 8.37-9.95, derived by ROC analysis, with area under the ROC curve- area under the curve value = 0.949, sensitivity=0.882, and specificity = 0.880). Oligomenorrhic women with PCOS possess significantly higher values of AMH levels (8.70 ± 3.66 > 3.09 ± 1.86 ng/mL) level than the regular menstrual rhythm within the same group. Patients with PCOS had significantly less skeletal muscle mass and greater subcutaneous fat content than the control group. CONCLUSION(S): 25-hydroxy-vitamin D might be intermeshed with the underlying pathophysiology and severity of PCOS, as well as associated metabolic disorders like insulin resistance. The AMH level is finely tuned by most of the plausible effectors of PCOS and contends to be a promising biomarker for the diagnosis as well as prognosis of PCOS.

CONTEXT: Although several investigations have been conducted on the association between serum vitamin D levels and prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in children and adolescents, their findings are inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis to summarize this subject. DATA SOURCES: The electronic databases of ISI Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, and motor engineering of Google Scholar were comprehensively searched up to May 2023. DATA EXTRACTION: Epidemiologic studies that investigated the risk of hyperglycemia and insulin resistance in relation to serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels in children and adolescents were included. DATA ANALYSIS: Twenty-two investigations, with a total of 38 622 participants, were systematically reviewed. Meta-analysis of 15 studies (n = 32 720 participants) showed that participants with the highest serum vitamin D levels had 42% lower risk of hyperglycemia, compared with those in the lowest category of serum vitamin D levels (relative risk [RR] = 0.58; 95%CI, 0.48, 0.71). Moreover, pooling 8 studies (n = 10 465 participants) illustrated that highest serum vitamin D level was associated with a 44% lower risk of insulin resistance compared with the lowest serum vitamin D level (RR = 0.56; 95%CI, 0.37, 0.83). Based on linear dose-response analysis, each 10 nmol/L increment in serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D was associated with a 6% decreased risk of hyperglycemia and insulin resistance in children. Furthermore, nonlinear dose-response analysis revealed that increasing serum vitamin D concentration from 40 nmol/L to sufficient values (>50 nmol/L) was associated with a decreasing trend in risk of hyperglycemia and insulin resistance. CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis revealed inverse associations between serum vitamin D levels and hyperglycemia and insulin resistance in children and adolescents, in a dose-response manner. Increasing serum vitamin D concentration from 40 nmol/L to sufficient values (>50 nmol/L) was associated with a decreasing trend in hyperglycemia and insulin resistance risk. BACKGROUND: Limited studies are available on vitamin D supplementation in dogs. This study evaluates the effect of a commercial vitamin D3 supplement on serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D as well as selected biochemical and hematological parameters in healthy dogs. Eight intact male adult dogs with a mean body weight of 20 kg from mixed breeds were included in the study. After adaptation period, dogs received vitamin D3 supplement at the dose of 50 IU/kg body weight per day. Blood samples were collected on days 0, 14, 28 and 42 of supplementation. Food was used for analysis of vitamin D3 content. RESULTS: Significant increase in serum level of 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 was detected since day 14 of supplementation. Changes in serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 concentration during time showed an upward significance (p < 0.05). Vitamin D3 content of the food was 2900 IU/kg dry matter. Changes in serum phosphorus levels were upward significant. No dog showed calcium or phosphorus levels above the highest reference level. Liver and kidney parameters remained in the reference range during the experiment. A gradual significant increase was observed in hemoglobin and hematocrit which was started from day 14. Vitamin D3 supplementation had no significant effect on neutrophils, monocytes and lymphocytes percent during the study. CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin D3 supplementation at 50 IU/kg BW daily, increases serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D in healthy dogs fed with a diet containing proper amount of this vitamin. It also increases hemoglobin and hematocrit levels in a time dependent manner without inducing adverse effects.

AIM: To evaluate the potential of the combined individual vascular histopathological lesion and serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25(OH)D] level as predictors of outcomes in patients with diabetes and chronic kidney disease. METHODS: A total of 190 patients with type 2 diabetes and kidney disease stages 1-4 were retrospectively included. Kaplan-Meier analysis and the log-rank test were performed to assess renal survival differences. And the time-dependent receiver operating characteristic analyses were used to characterize the predictive accuracy. Hazard ratios for vascular lesion scores and 25(OH)D levels with renal outcomes were estimated using Cox proportional hazards regression models with follow-up time. RESULTS: Over a median follow-up of 23.78 (12.61, 37.14) months, 71 patients (37.4 %) experienced the renal outcomes. Enrolled patients with more severe vascular lesions had worse kidney function, heavier proteinuria, lower serum 25(OH)D levels, and higher prevalence of composite kidney outcomes. Baseline serum 25(OH)D was a significant independent risk factor for vascular lesion scores. The effect of serum 25(OH)D level on kidney prognosis was more pronounced in males and those with more exacerbated vascular lesions (score 2). The severity of vascular lesions and serum 25(OH)D levels were associated with unfavorable kidney outcomes. Accordingly, further time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curves confirmed that combined 25(OH)D level and vascular lesion score had a stable and reliable performance in renal outcomes prediction at short and long-term follow-up times. CONCLUSIONS: 25(OH)D level and vascular lesion scores in kidney histopathology could serve as a useful risk-stratification tool for predicting renal progression in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Surgical site infections (SSI) following head and neck oncology surgery can lead to significant morbidity and healthcare costs. This cross-sectional study was used to investigate a potential link between pre-operative 25-hydroxy vitamin D deficiency and an increased risk of surgical site infections in patients undergoing oral cavity oncology surgery. This cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary center in northwestern India from May 2022 to May 2023. Patients scheduled to undergo oral cavity oncology surgery during this period were eligible for inclusion. Patients with complete pre-operative 25-hydroxy vitamin D levels and documented post-operative wound infection status were included in the analysis. A total of 85 patients who underwent oral cavity oncology surgery were included in the study. Among them, 30.58% (26 patients) had pre-operative vitamin D deficiency, The overall incidence of surgical site infection (SSI) was 36.47% (31 patients). Among the patients with pre-operative vitamin D deficiency, 23 (88.5%) developed surgical site infections. Finally, pre-operative levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D, pre-operative poor oral hygiene, and low albumin were confirmed as statistically significant independent predictors of SSI. After doing multivariate analysis, vitamin D deficiency was found to be a significant predictor of post-op wound infection [adjusted odds ratio - 0.71 (95% CI 0.61-0.82); p value < 0.001]. This study highlights the significant association between pre-operative 25-hydroxy vitamin D deficiency and an increased risk of surgical site infections in patients. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in modulating the immune response, promoting antimicrobial peptides, and enhancing wound healing. These findings support the importance of assessing and addressing vitamin D deficiency in patients scheduled for oral cavity oncology surgery to potentially reduce the incidence of SSIs.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the sthudy is to sthudy the level of soluble Immune Checkpoint Molecules (B7.2, CTLA-4, Tim-3, Lag-3, PD-1) in the oral fluid during dental caries with the background of a lack and/or deficiency of 25-hydroxy-vitamin D in body. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During the research 3 groups of people were formed, each one of them included 17 people aged from 20 to 24 years. The first group included students with high-intensity caries (above 9 DMFt index) and 25-hydroxy-vitamin D levels in blood serum >30 ng/ml, the second included students with high caries intensity and 25-hydroxy-vitamin D levels <30 ng/ml. The control group consisted of students with an average DMFt index of 1.5 (from 0 to 3) and a level of 25(OH)D in the blood more than 30 ng/ml. To determine the content of B7.2 (CD86), CTLA-4, Tim-3, Lag-3, PD-1, the Human Vascular Inflammation Panel 1 multiplex analysis kit from Biolegend (USA) was used. RESULTS: The results of the research showed that during dental caries with a normal level of 25-hydroxy-vitamin D there are no significant changes in the content of Immune Checkpoint Molecules. With the background of deficiency and lack of 25-hydroxy-vitamin D there is a decrease in the amount of B7.2, LAG-3, Tim-3 and PD-1. These changes are being aggravated with an increase of the caries intensity. CONCLUSION: Vitamin D deficiency leads to a decrease in mucosal immunity of the oral cavity, the multiplication of pathogenic microorganisms, which in turn, releasing various metabolites, including cytokine-like substances, aggravate the pathological process and intensify carious lesions.

CONTEXT: Several studies have investigated the relationship between serum vitamin D and dyslipidemia in children and adolescents, but the findings have been contradictory. OBJECTIVE: The current systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis investigated the serum vitamin D - dyslipidemia relationship in children and adolescents. DATA SOURCES: ISI Web of Science, Scopus, MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE databases, and Google Scholar, were searched up to December 2022. DATA EXTRACTION: Observational studies that investigated the odds of dyslipidemia in categories of serum vitamin D levels in children were included, and their data were extracted. DATA ANALYSIS: Pooling of 17 effect sizes from 15 studies (39 342 participants) showed that subjects with higher serum vitamin D had 27% lower odds of hypertriglyceridemia (odds ratio [OR] = 0.73; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.60, 0.88). A meta-analysis of 18 effect sizes from 16 studies (39 718 participants) illustrated that highest vs lowest serum vitamin D was related to 22% lower odds of low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) (OR = 0.78; 95% CI: 0.66, 0.91). Also, a nonlinear association between serum vitamin D and odds of abnormal lipid profile was found: elevating values of 25-hydroxyvitamin D from 35 nmol/L to 55 nmol/L was associated with a decreasing trend in odds of hypertriglyceridemia, hyper low-density lipoprotein cholesterolemia, hypercholesterolemia, and hypo HDL-cholesterolemia. However, no significant linear association was observed. Based on the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE), the certainty of all evidence was rated as high. CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis revealed that the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D was inversely related to odds of abnormal serum triglycerides and HDL-c in children and adolescents. Increasing serum vitamin D from 35 nmol/L to 55 nmol/L was associated with a decreasing trend in the odds of abnormal serum triglycerides, HDL-c, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and total cholesterol in children. BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis and osteopenia are more frequent in patients who have received kidney transplants than in healthy individuals. Although osteoporosis and sarcopenia are closely related, only few studies have considered them in the post-transplantation period. We aimed to investigate the relationship between lower bone mineral density and skeletal muscle in kidney transplant recipients. METHODS: We included 371 patients in the maintenance phase of kidney transplantation (> 6 months after transplantation) followed-up at our institution from January to December 2019. The primary endpoint was the association between bone mineral density and skeletal muscle mass index. As secondary endpoints, in addition to skeletal muscle mass index, we investigated other factors associated with low bone mineral density, including kidney function and 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) concentration. Considering the possibility that factors affecting bone mineral density differ between men and women, we explored these factors separately for both sexes. RESULTS: Of the 371 participants, 243 (65.4%) were men. The median age and time after transplantation were 52 and 14 years, respectively. Univariate analysis showed that age, female sex, time since transplantation, cystatin C-based estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFRcysC), 25(OH)D, and skeletal muscle mass index were associated with bone mineral density. Multivariate analysis showed associations of bone mineral density with eGFRcysC, 25(OH)D, and skeletal muscle mass index. Multivariate analysis by sex showed significant associations with eGFRcysC, hemoglobin, and skeletal muscle mass index in men and with age, eGFRcysC, albumin, and skeletal muscle mass index in women. Bone mineral density was not associated with history of dialysis prior to transplantation or time since transplantation. CONCLUSIONS: In kidney transplant recipients, an independent association between lower bone mineral density and skeletal muscle mass index was observed in both sexes.

This study examined overall and sex-specific associations of serum lipid-soluble micronutrients including α- and γ-tocopherols, 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25(OH)D), retinol, and six major carotenoids with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic lever disease (MASLD) using the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. This analysis included 3956 adults (1991 men, 1965 women) aged ≥ 20 years. Steatotic liver disease was determined through transient elastography examination. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) for MASLD associated with micronutrients were estimated using logistic regressions. Higher serum α-tocopherol (highest vs. lowest quartile: OR = 1.53, 95% CI = 1.05-2.22, p = 0.03) and γ-tocopherol (highest vs. lowest quartile: OR = 4.15, 95% CI = 3.00-5.74, p < 0.0001) levels were associated with increased odds of MASLD. Higher serum 25(OH)D levels were associated with reduced odds of MASLD (highest vs. lowest quartile: OR = 0.41, 95% CI = 0.27-0.61, p = 0.0001). Inverse associations with the condition were also observed for carotenoids (α-carotene, ß-carotene, α-cryptoxanthin, ß-cryptoxanthin, combined lutein and zeaxanthin, and lycopene) in the serum (Ps < 0.05). The results were comparable between men and women, except for those on α-tocopherol, for which a positive association was only observed for men (p = 0.01). Our results suggest potential protective associations of serum 25(OH)D and carotenoids with MASLD. The positive associations between tocopherols and MASLD may reflect pathophysiological conditions associated with the condition.

Background: Previous cross-sectional studies have shown that Parkinson's disease (PD) patients have lower serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations than controls. Other studies have not yet tested whether research findings from other regions are generalizable to Chinese populations. In this case-control study, we examined the correlation between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and Parkinson's disease. Methods: We established an association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency and PD in a case-control study of 100 PD patients and 100 control subjects free of neurological disease at the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University. Results: Total 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were deficient in 21 % of patients with PD compared with 4 % of controls. In univariate analyses, plasma levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were associated with PD (p < 0.001). In multivariate analyses, vitamin D deficiency (25(OH)D < 20 ng/mL) was significantly associated with PD (p = 0.008, Odds Ratio =17.13, 95 % CI= 2.082-141.075). Individuals with 25(OH)D levels in the lowest quartile had the highest prevalence of PD (p = 0.026, OR=11.786, 95 % CI =1.342-103.51 compared to individuals with values in the highest quartile). Conclusions: Our study reveals an association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D and PD. Patients with incident PD had significantly lower serum 25(OH)D concentrations than age-matched controls. High-risk PD patients with vitamin D deficiency who have not yet developed exercise impairment should undergo vitamin D measurement and any necessary treatment as soon as possible. Limitations of the study: the study needs further assessment of populations with low vitamin D levels in other regions of China; further assessment of the effect of different sources of vitamin D on PD; further study of longitudinal cohorts at different time points.

Background and objective: IgA vasculitis (IgAV), a predominantly pediatric leukocytoclastic disease, has an unpredictable, though largely benign, evolution. The aim of this study was to retrospectively investigate any potential clinical or laboratory predictors of gastrointestinal involvement in a single-center cohort of children with IgAV. Patients and methods: A total of 195 children with a history of IgAV, regularly followed-up for an average period of 1 ± 2.6 years via outpatients clinics of the pediatric rheumatology unit in our University, were assessed, analyzing their clinical and laboratory variables in relationship with their disease evolution and outcome. Results: Univariate analysis showed that a higher neutrophil granulocyte count and lower lymphocyte count (expressed as a percentage of the total white blood cells) were significantly associated with the presence of gastrointestinal involvement at the first examination (65.2 ± 13% versus 58.8 ± 12%, p = 0.02, and 26.4 ± 11% versus 32.1 ± 11%, p = 0.02, respectively). A positive pharyngeal swab for Streptococcus pyogenes, a deficiency of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, a persistence of purpuric rash for more than 1 month, and purpuric lesions in the genital area were also associated with gastrointestinal involvement (p = 0.0001, p = 0.0001, p = 0.007 and p = 0.001, respectively). However, multiple logistic regressions with correction for the patients' sex and age showed that lower 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels, persistent rash, and genital lesions were independently and significantly associated with signs of gastrointestinal involvement. We then performed a secondary analysis (both univariate and multivariate) to investigate whether vitamin D deficiency was associated with other IgAV manifestations: we found that only 25-hydroxyvitamin D deficiency remained significantly associated with gastrointestinal involvement in IgAV. Conclusions: Patients with IgAV and vitamin D deficiency might be more prone to developing gastrointestinal manifestations of variable severity.
