Groups of Jungian analysts, which included the present authors, met to discuss four key theoretical concepts, each of which was felt to have problematic aspects if used unquestioningly in contemporary practice. The concepts were: The Primitive, Inner and Outer Worlds, Contrasexuality and Participation Mystique. The discussions were informed by clinical material and specific papers chosen for their critical evaluation of the topic. Four recorded transcripts were made, with permission, for further consideration of the relationship between contemporary Jungian theory and practice using the research method of thematic analysis. Three main themes were identified: Work of Analysis, Frames of Reference and Power Dynamics. The authors discuss the themes in relation to the overarching theme of power, understood as operating at conscious and unconscious levels. The artwork "Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View" by Cornelia Parker is used as a metaphor in discussing the dynamic of challenging foundational concepts. The authors suggest that power dynamics are intrinsic in both the difficulty and the benefits of critically evaluating key concepts, binding together the theoretical (what informs us) with the clinical (what we do in the consulting room) as well as blowing apart pre-conceived notions of what underpins the analyst's work.

Les auteurs de cet article ont fait partie de groupes d'analystes jungiens qui se sont rencontrés pour débattre de quatre concepts théoriques fondamentaux, chacun de ces concepts étant perçu comme problématique si on l'utilise dans la pratique contemporaine sans se poser de questions. Ces concepts sont : primitif, mondes intérieur et extérieur, contra­sexualité et participation mystique. Les discussions ont été nourries par du matériel clinique et par des articles spécialement choisis pour leur évaluation critique du sujet traité. Quatre transcriptions enregistrées furent faites, avec l'accord des personnes concernées, pour une étude plus approfondie de la relation entre la théorie et la pratique jungienne contemporaine, en s'appuyant sur la méthode de recherche de l'analyse thématique. Trois thèmes furent identifiés : le travail d'analyse, les cadres de référence, et les dynamiques de pouvoir. Les auteurs débattent de ces thèmes en les reliant avec le thème fondamental du pouvoir, perçu comme fonctionnant aux niveaux conscient et inconscient. L'œuvre de l'artiste Cornelia Parker « Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View ¼ est utilisée comme métaphore lorsqu'il est question de la dynamique de questionner des concepts fondamentaux. Les auteurs suggèrent que les dynamiques de pouvoir sont propres à la difficulté mais aussi aux bénéfices de cette remise en question, en reliant le théorique (ce qui nous informe) avec la clinique (ce que l'on fait dans la salle de consultation) et en faisant sauter les notions qui n'ont pas été questionnées, en ce qui concerne ce qui étaye le travail analytique.

Grupos de analistas Junguianos, los cuales incluyen a las presentes autoras, se reunieron para discutir cuatro conceptos teóricos fundamentales, cada uno de los cuales se consideraba que tenía aspectos problemáticos si se utilizaba sin cuestionamientos en la práctica contemporánea. Los conceptos eran: Primitivo, Mundos Interior y Exterior, Contrasexualidad y Participation Mystique. Los debates se basaron en material clínico y en artículos específicos elegidos para una evaluación crítica del tema. Se transcribieron con permiso cuatro grabaciones para un examen más detenido de la relación entre la teoría y la práctica junguiana contemporánea utilizando el método de investigación del análisis temático. Se identificaron tres temas: Trabajo Analítico, Marcos de Referencia y Dinámicas de Poder. Las autoras analizaron los temas en relación con el tema más amplio del poder, entendido como algo que opera a nivel consciente e inconsciente. La obra de arte "Cold Dark Matter: An Exploded View", de Cornelia Parker, fue utilizada como metáfora para discutir acerca de la dinámica de cuestionar los conceptos fundamentales. Se sugiere que las dinámicas de poder son intrínsecas tanto a la dificultad como a los beneficios de hacer esta tarea, ligando lo teórico (lo que nos informa) con lo clínico (lo que hacemos en la consulta), así como a desarmar nociones incuestionadas de aquello que sustenta el trabajo analítico.

En este artículo, el autor explora algunas de las cuestiones que plantea la práctica del análisis virtual. En particular, hace hincapié en la diferencia entre el encuadre y el marco y propone un enfoque teórico de este último como emergente dentro de la dinámica transferencial.

The ontology of death is universal, hence archetypal. Nowhere do we witness any organic creature escape its talons. Analytical psychology has had an intimate relationship to death for the simple fact that it contemplates the soul, the numinous, and an afterlife. From Hegel to Heidegger, Freud and Jung, death was an existential force that sustained and transformed life, the positive significance of the negative. Rather than merely a destructive phenomenon, death informs Being, the power of nothingness that dialectically drives life. In this paper, I will introduce the notion of what I call the omega principle, the psychological orientation and trajectory of our being towards death, which we may say is a universal preoccupation and recapitulation of the collective unconscious that subsumes our personal relation to death, an eternal return of the objective psyche constellated as esse in anima.

L'ontologie de la mort est universelle, et ainsi archétypale. Nous ne voyons nulle part une créature organique échapper à son emprise. La psychologie analytique a eu une relation intime avec la mort du simple fait qu'elle contemple l'âme, le numineux et l'au-delà. De Hegel à Heidegger, Freud et Jung, la mort était une force existentielle qui soutenait et transformait la vie, la signification positive du négatif. Plutôt qu'un simple phénomène destructeur, la mort façonne l'Etre ; la puissance du néant qui conduit dialectiquement la vie. Dans cet article, je vais présenter l'idée que j'appelle le principe oméga ; l'orientation et la trajectoire psychologiques de notre être allant vers la mort, dont nous pourrions dire qu'il s'agit d'une préoccupation et d'une récapitulation universelle de l'inconscient collectif, qui englobe notre relation personnelle à la mort, un retour éternel de la psyché objective constellée en tant qu'esse in anima.

La ontología de la muerte es universal, por tanto arquetípica. Ninguna criatura orgánica escapa a sus garras. La psicología analítica ha tenido una relación íntima con la muerte por el simple hecho de que contempla el alma, lo numinoso y una vida después de la muerte. De Hegel a Heidegger, Freud y Jung, la muerte era una fuerza existencial que sostenía y transformaba la vida, el significado positivo de lo negativo. Más que un mero fenómeno destructivo, la muerte informa al Ser, el poder de la nada que impulsa dialécticamente la vida. En este artículo, introduciré la noción de lo que denomino principio omega, la orientación y trayectoria psicológica de nuestro ser hacia la muerte, que podemos decir que es una preocupación y recapitulación universal del inconsciente colectivo que subsume nuestra relación personal con la muerte, un eterno retorno de la psique objetiva constelada como esse in anima.

This work originates from reflections on the observation of recurring themes in dreams of patients in psychoanalytic treatment during the most restrictive lockdown period in Italy (March - May 2020). The authors focus on the peculiar dialogic state between consciousness and the unconscious that arose following a collective event such as that of the pandemic, which determined the activation of complex personal nuclei, compensatory effects of the unconscious psyche and new perspective functions. These latter aspects are interpreted with reference to the contributions of Erich Neumann, bringing a new psychological vision of the relationship between Man and Nature in relation to catastrophic events.

Ce travail a pour point de départ nos réflexions sur l'observation de thèmes récurrents dans les rêves de patients en traitement psychanalytique durant la période de confinement le plus strict en Italie (de mars à mai 2020). Les auteurs se concentrent sur l'état dialogique singulier entre la conscience et l'inconscient, qui survient à la suite d'un événement collectif tel la pandémie, et qui détermine l'activation de noyaux personnels complexes, les effets compensatoires de la psyché inconsciente et les fonctions de nouvelle perspective. Ces derniers aspects sont interprétés en référence aux apports d'Erich Neumann, amenant une nouvelle vision psychologique de la relation entre l'Homme et la Nature en lien avec des événements catastrophiques.

El presente trabajo se origina a partir de reflexiones basadas en la observación de temas recurrentes en sueños de pacientes en tratamiento psicoanalítico durante el período de cuarentena de mayor restricción en Italia (Marzo-Mayo 2020). Los autores focalizan en el estado dialógico peculiar entre la consciencia y el inconsciente que emergió a partir de un evento colectivo como el de la pandemia, el cual determinó la activación de núcleos de complejos personales, efectos compensatorios de la psique inconsciente y nuevas funciones. Estos últimos aspectos son interpretados con referencia a las contribuciones de Erich Neumann, ofreciendo una nueva visión psicológica de la relación entre el Hombre y la Naturaleza con relación a los eventos catastróficos.

This paper explores the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on my relationship with analysands and my inner world. I reflect on the role of the archetypal Self during times of existential anxiety that may lead to an experience of 'essential anxiety'. This term refers to a meeting by a fearful ego with an inward recognition of the Self, when faced with threat. The efforts to curb the spread of the pandemic changed our ways of life, while the virus itself threatened our existence in debilitating or outright destructive ways. But what also came into view, in sessions of analysis and supervision, was the creative instinct, and a celebration of life. The soul-to-soul relationship, and the connection with images of the archetypal Self, made the experience of existential anxiety at times an essential experience that facilitated psychological growth. I discuss some advantages of on-line Jungian analysis where, despite distance and partial view, the body still serves as container to hold important psychological material, conferring a sense of wholeness for analyst and analysand. The COVID-19 crisis is terrible and terrifying but it also provides an opportunity for self-regulation and individuation.

Cet article explore l'impact de la pandémie de COVID-19 sur ma relation avec mes analysants et avec mon monde intérieur. Je réfléchis au rôle du Soi archétypal durant les périodes d'angoisse existentielle pouvant mener à une expérience 'd'angoisse essentielle'. Ce terme fait référence à la rencontre entre un moi craintif et l'acceptation intérieure du Soi, lors d'une confrontation avec une menace. Les efforts pour atténuer la diffusion de la pandémie ont changé nos manières de vivre, pendant que le virus lui-même menaçait notre existence de manière écrasante ou carrément destructive. Mais ce qui s'est également profilé, dans les séances d'analyse et de supervision, fut l'instinct créatif, et une célébration de la vie. La relation d'âme à âme et le lien avec des images du Soi archétypal ont parfois fait de l'expérience d'angoisse existentielle une expérience essentielle qui a facilité la croissance psychologique. J'aborde certains bénéfices de l'analyse Jungienne en ligne quand, malgré l'éloignement et la vision rétrécie à l'écran, le corps sert encore en tant que contenant pour détenir du matériel psychologique important, ce qui confère à l'analyste et à l'analysant un sentiment de complétude. La COVID-19 est terrible et terrifiante mais elle offre aussi une opportunité pour l'autorégulation et l'individuation.

El presente trabajo explora el impacto de la pandemia de COVID-19 en mi relación con mis analizandos y con mi mundo interno. Reflexiono sobre el rol del Sí Mismo arquetípico durante estos tiempos de ansiedad existencial que pueden conducir a una experiencia de 'ansiedad esencial'. Este término hace referencia al encuentro de un ego atemorizado con un reconocimiento interno del Sí Mismo, cuando es confrontado con una amenaza. Los esfuerzos por reducir la propagación de la pandemia cambiaron nuestro modo de vida, mientras el virus mismo amenazaba nuestra existencia ya sea debilitándola, o en formas directamente destructivas. Pero lo que también se hizo visible, en sesiones de análisis y supervisión, fue el instinto creativo y la celebración de la vida. La relación de alma-a-alma, y la conexión con imágenes del Sí Mismo arquetípico, hizo de a momentos la experiencia de ansiedad existencial, una experiencia esencial que facilitó el crecimiento psicológico. Analizo algunas ventajas del análisis Junguiano online, donde, aún la distancia y cierta parcialidad en el campo visual, el cuerpo sirve todavía de contenedor para alojar importante material psicológico, brindando un sentido de totalidad al analista y al analizando. La crisis por el COVID-19 es terrible y aterradora, pero al mismo tiempo provee una oportunidad para la autorregulación y la individuación.

Harper Lee's novels, To Kill a Mockingbird and Go Set a Watchman, are examined through the lens of reader-response theory and the Jungian concept of the cultural complex or phantom narratives. Socio-historical context includes the American civil rights movement of the 60's as well as Black Lives Matter. The clinical and institutional implications are briefly considered.

Les romans de Harper Lee, Ne tirez pas sur l'oiseau moqueur et Va et poste une sentinelle, sont étudiés sous l'angle de la théorie de la réception (reader-response theory) et du concept Jungien de complexe culturel, ou narratifs fantômes. Le contexte historico-social inclut le mouvement américain pour les droits civiques dans les années 60 ainsi que Black Lives Matter. Les implications cliniques et institutionnelles sont envisagées succinctement.

Las novelas de Harper Lee, 'Matar a un Ruiseñor y 'Ve y Pon un Centinela', son exploradas a través de la teoría de la respuesta social del lector y el concepto Junguiano de complejo cultural o las narrativas fantasmales. El contexto sociocultural incluye al movimiento por los derechos civiles en América de los años 60, así como también al movimiento Black Lives Matter. Son consideradas brevemente las implicancias clínicas e institucionales.

This article describes the growth and development of Daniel as a master Biblical dream interpreter. In his clinical use of dreams, he is compared to a contemporary Jungian analyst who faces difficult clinical dilemmas such as interpreting a dream that is forgotten, understanding the difference between a 'big dream' and a personal dream, as well as the situation when a dream is interpreted within a dream. Daniel's technique is compared to traditional Jewish dream rituals. Although the Book of Daniel is usually considered as a series of disconnected episodes, the author argues that the sequence of chapters reveals the process of Daniel's individuation as described by Neumann's concept of centroversion.

Cet article décrit la croissance et le développement de Daniel en tant qu'interprète biblique spécialiste du rêve. Dans son utilisation clinique des rêves, il est comparé à un analyste Jungien contemporain, face à de difficiles dilemmes cliniques tels qu'interpréter un rêve qui est oublié, comprendre la différence entre un « grand rêve ¼ et un rêve personnel, ainsi que la situation dans laquelle un rêve est interprété dans un rêve. La technique de Daniel est comparée aux rituels traditionnels juifs concernant les rêves. El presente artículo describe el crecimiento y desarrollo de Daniel como maestro Bíblico intérprete de sueños. En su clásico uso de los sueños, es comparado con un analista Junguiano contemporáneo quien se confronta con difíciles dilemas clínicos, tales como, la interpretación de un sueño que es olvidado, comprender la diferencia entre un 'gran sueño' y un sueño personal, así como también la situación en la que un sueño es interpretado dentro del sueño. La técnica de Daniel es comparada con el ritual tradicional Judaico de los sueños. In response to the question 'Who is My Jung?', this paper describes the profound personal impact of Jung's creative / artistic approach to the unconscious, beginning with my discovery of The Red Book at the age of twelve. Echoing the flow of my own dream-life, I trace the course of two analyses through the alchemical process of solutio, which began with numinous dreams of tidal waves and plunged us into inter- and intra-psychic analytic relationships that evoked vestigial memories of our first aquatic world in utero.

Azerbaijan is a country in which the law is based on democratic principles. The mentioned principles underlie the national health care law. Democratic values, such as respect for human rights and freedoms, human dignity, as well as universal bioethical principles that are widely implemented in the national law, create conditions for the implementation of the patient's rights. The basic law governing the doctor-patient relationship, Law on Protection of Health of Population in Azerbaijan, reflects the basic patients' rights and obligations of doctors and medical institutions. Informed consent, which is a key component of patient rights, is also reflected, however, to date, a significant drawback of the Azerbaijan medical legislation is described in the article in this field. For example, at the moment there is no single standardized informed consent form in the country's different medical institutions. Due to the absence of any legally approved standards for informed consent forms, public and private health care institutions individually develop such forms, which sometimes can differ significantly. At the moment, one of the important directions in the field of healthcare is its improvement in accordance with international standards. The research made it possible to make conclusions about the necessary measures to improve and unify the informed consent form. The authors also analyzed the main provisions of the medical law of Azerbaijan and identified the main trends of its further development.

The complete correspondence between C.G. Jung and Erich Neumann was published in 2015. This article attempts to provide insight into the practical task, as well as the theoretical background, of the editing process. The advantages and possibilities of an unabridged edition with an extensive historical contextualization are demonstrated, and compared to the approach of the editors of the Jung Letters and their selection therein of Jung's letters to Neumann. The practical points under consideration include the establishment of the letter corpus, the ascertainment of dates and the chronological arrangement of the letter exchange, as well as the deciphering of handwritten letters. Theoretical aspects under discussion involve the question of the merits of a critical contextualisation and the position of the editor vis-à-vis the research object. The example of the selecting and editing of Jung's letters to Neumann by Aniela Jaffé and Gerhard Adler reveals how drastically the close ties of those editors with Jung, Neumann, and members of the Zurich analytical circles compromised their editorial work at times. The advantage for an editor being able to work from an historical distance is appreciated.

This paper considers the experience of translating the correspondence between C.G. Jung and Erich Neumann as part of the Philemon series. The translator explores the similarities between analytical work and the task of translation by means of the concepts of the dialectical third and the interactional field. The history and politics of the translation of analytic writing and their consequences for the lingua franca of analysis are discussed. Key themes within the correspondence are outlined, including Jung and Neumann's pre-war exploration of Judaism and the unconscious, the post-war difficulties around the publication of Neumann's Depth Psychology and a New Ethic set against the early years of the C.G. Jung Institute in Zurich, and the development of the correspondents' relationship over time.

Psychology as the discipline of interiority is the name of the psychology that has developed from Wolfgang Giegerich's work in the field of analytical psychology. This article offers a counterview to that of Mark Saban's claim that Giegerich's psychology is 'irrelevant' to Jungians today and is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of Jungian psychology. It will be shown that, in fact, it is a fundamental misunderstanding of Giegerich's work that has led Saban to form erroneous conclusions. Links between Jung's and Giegerich's conceptions of the 'objective psyche' will be highlighted, along with other examples of how, contrary to Saban's conclusions, psychology as the discipline of interiority has obvious connections to, and grounding in, Jungian psychology.

This short paper was presented to a conference in honour of the 60(th) year of the JAP and was one of others that acknowledged the contribution of Michael Fordham. The subtitle refers to the paper's overview of Fordham's published oeuvre and the particular place of the Journal of Analytical Psychology, for which he was the founding editor. Fordham's contribution to a Jungian-based model of development is discussed, with reference to his papers in the British Journal of Medical Psychology. The paper notes miscellaneous pieces from Fordham's commentaries, obituaries, papers and reviews which capture not only the development of Fordham as a thinker but also his character. There is discussion of his reviews of Melanie Klein's Envy and Gratitude and manuscripts by Erich Neumann. A reminiscence of Fordham as supervisor is recounted.
