RESUMEN
OBJECTIVE: To identify the adherence of health professionals of an intensive care unit to the five moments for hand hygiene. METHOD: Cross-sectional analytical study with a quantitative approach, based on secondary data from a database of a hospital infection control service at an institution in southern Brazil. A total of 793 observations were analyzed from July to December 2012. RESULTS: Hand washing was not performed in 446 (56.2%) of the observations, and the adherence rate was 43.7%. The greatest adherence to hand hygiene was among the physiotherapists (53.5%) and the lowest adherence was among the nursing staff (29.2%). The indications with the lowest adherence rates to hand hygiene were "before touching the patient" (18.4%) and "before aseptic procedure" (20.9%). CONCLUSION: We conclude that adherence to hand washing does not comply with the national and international guidelines, especially when we consider the current scenario of growing infections caused by multidrug-resistant microorganisms.

This is a cross-sectional study that evaluated the work ability index (WAI) and the sociodemographic and work-related aspects of 93 nurses in a university hospital. The data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics. The sample was predominantly female (98.9%), with 41.7 (SD = 9.0) years old 63.4% have a partner, sleep 6.9 (SD = 1.3) hours daily, 8.6% smoked and 37.6% performed regular physical activity The WAI score was 40.1 (SD = 3.7), indicating a good work capacity. There were correlations between WAI and age (r = -0.22, p = 0.0394), duration of work (r = -0.23, p = - 0.0295), and sleep (r = 0.26, p = 0.0162). Nurses who live alone and non-smokers had higher average than those with a partner and who smoked (41.3 and 39.6; 40.4 and 37.8; p = 0.0476). Thus, healthy life habits such as sleeping 7 hours or more and not smoking were positively associated with work capacity.

This cross-sectional and quantitative study was carried out with 88 traditionalist gauchos, who took part in the Farroupilha Camp in 2009. It verified their adherence to prostate cancer examination, also analyzing which variables influence in the adherence to digital rectal examination. Participants had an average age of 58.5 years, with high income and schooling level. Most (92%) lived longer in urban areas, had healthfollow-up at private health services (70.5%) and have had some preventive examination for prostate cancer (83%). The ones who had preventive examination had higher education, income and access to private health services. There was lower demand for preventive exams by those who lived most of their lives in the rural area. However, there was no relationship between the place where participants lived longer and adherence to digital rectalexamination. Findings indicate correspondence in the adherence to preventive examinations with other studies carried out in Brazil.

The objective of this cross-sectional, comparative study was to describe the demographic, socioeconomic and health characteristics of elderly voluntary workers of a Non-governmental organization of Porto Alegre, and investigate the influence of voluntary work and the referred characteristics on the subjects' self-perception of health, compared to a paired group of elderly individuals who did not perform any voluntary work. Through interviews it was found that 87.4% of the elderly voluntary workers were women, with complete secondary education, had their own income and followed a religion and a healthy lifestyle. The comparison of data from both groups showed that self-perception of great health was more common among voluntary workers (30.5% compared to 6.1%, p = 0.054). Multivariate analysis revealed that performing voluntary work and having fewer diseases influenced the individuals' having a positive self-perception of their health (p < 0.05). Study results support the hypothesis that voluntary work may be a mechanism of health promotion among the elderly.

This article aimed to reflect about the importance of the role nurses perform in strategies of health education to lay caregivers, who are important actors in the health/disease process. It is a thematic reflection, built through bibliographic review, which discusses the role of lay caregivers in different stages of the life cycle. Considering the participation of lay caregivers in the Brazilian reality, strategies have been sought to include them in the health care, given the little attention Public Policies have given to them. Therefore, the nurses as health educators, must offer support to the lay caregivers helping them to choose among available alternatives, while delivering care, to not harm their own health. Concluding, health education can be an alternative to offer attention to the lay caregivers, while the nurse has important role in the development of alternatives.

This case study aimed at identifying Nursing Diagnosis (ND) in adult patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, with the purpose of contributing to the Systematization of Nurse Care. Interviews and observation were used for data collection, in addition to Nursing Process application. During the three months of data collection, other NDs were obtained by searching the files of the 6 patients. The 32 ND found in this study were grouped according to Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Out of these 32 ND, 15 corresponded to changes in Physiological Needs, and 10 to changes in Protection and Safety Needs.

This epidemiological and exploratory-descriptive study aimed to identify the socioeconomic and demographic features, as well as the health and disease condition of elderly people from a Family Health Program in Porto Alegre, Brazil, with the purpose of contributing to the planning of health actions for this population. Data from 98 elderly people were collected through a home survey by means of a semistructured instrument. The mean age of the interviewed subjects was 69.5. Sixty-one participants (62.2%) were women; 40 (40.8%) were married and 77 (78.6%) did not have remunerated work. Most men (64.9%) had a companion, against 26.2% of women with a partner. As to health, 80.6% reported suffering from some pathology, especially diseases of the circulatory system, reported by 55.1% of the interviewees. Although the collected data are in line with other studies, knowledge about them is important to adapt health actions by the Family Health Program team under study, in order to offer better care to these elderly people.
