RESUMEN

Kidneys of 16 beagles with experimentally induced heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infections and 4 heartworm-nai;ve dogs were studied by light and electron microscopy. The infections were induced either by subcutaneous injection of infective larvae or by the transplantation of adult parasites, and infection periods varied from 111 to 818 days and 365 to 923 days, respectively. One control group of heartworm-naïve dogs and four groups of heartworm-infected dogs, which were divided according to the type and the length of infection, were used. In the infected dogs, thickening of the glomerular basement membrane (GBM), the presence of dense deposits in the GBM, and foot process effacement were the most frequent lesions observed. In some dogs, electron dense deposits were seen in the GBM and the mesangium and/or enlargement of the mesangial matrix could be characterized. The longer the infection period, the thicker the GBM and the more common the occurrence of foot process effacement. In general, these alterations were more evident in animals that had been infected for more than 1 year, had high microfilaremia, and had 14 or more parasites in the main pulmonary artery and its branches. The presence of dense deposits suggests that the pathogenesis of kidney disease in dirofilariasis is associated with deposits of immune complexes in the membrane. The finding of ultrastructural changes in dogs with early prepatent infections suggests that immature heartworms, as well as microfilariae and possibly adult worms, contribute to the glomerulonephropathy.

RESUMEN

The authors report a case of rhabdomyoma of the right ventricular cavity with outlet obstruction in a three-months old infant. The diagnosis was established by echocardiography. Bidimensional echocardiography study showed a polypoid tumor of the right ventricle. During the systole it was projected through the pulmonary valve, obstructing part of it. The Doppler study showed an important gradient between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery. The resection was performed with success. The diagnosis of cardiac rhabdomyoma was made by microscopic study. It is emphasized the importance of the echocardiographic study in an infant with oligosymptomatic cardiac murmurs.

RESUMEN

A 35-year-old man with cerebral vascular accident due to a left ventricular myxoma, had his diagnosis cleaned up by the transesophageal echocardiography. The patient underwent heart surgery to remove the tumor. The final pathologic diagnosis was therefore pedunculated thrombus of the left ventricle although the clinical findings and gross morphologic features of the mass were highly suggestive of myxoma.

RESUMEN

By the method of affinity chromatography a partially purified antigen was obtained after passing the plasma of an asymptomatic carrier of HBsAg through a column of Sepharose 4B linked to angi-HBs. This antigen was inoculated in rabbits using a schedule of 1,0 mg in the first dose and 4 other doses of 0,5 mg with intervals of approximately 15 days. Observing that blood samples collected after the 5th inoculation showed no change in antibody levels, the animals were bled on the 62th day and these immune sera were standardized with the following tests for the detection of HBsAg: Reverse passive hemagglutination (R-PHA) - using specific gamma globulin that was obtained from rabbit sera by affinity chromatography and reaching an optimal concentration of 10 micrograms/ml to sensitise SRBC at 5% fixed in glutaraldehyde. Counter immuno electrophoresis (CIEP) - using the rabbit immune sera diluted to 1/20 as a reagent for the detection of HBsAg. The immune sera was also used to conjugate new Sepharose 4B for affinity chromatography and was found having a linking capacity of approximately 0,5 to 1,0 mg of HBsAg per ml of Sepharose after complete saturation.
