RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to review the reliability and reproducibility of 3D-CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) cephalometric landmark identification. METHODS: Electronic databases (Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science) were searched for papers published from 1998 to October 2014. Specific strategies were developed for each database, with the guidance of a librarian. Two reviewers independently analyzed the titles and abstracts for inclusion. The articles that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected for full-text reading, and the selected articles went through methodological quality evaluation. After the exclusion of repeated articles, the titles of the remaining ones were read and 1,328 of them were excluded. The abstracts of 173 articles were read, of which 43 were selected, read in full and submitted to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Fourteen articles or studies with reliable methodology and reproducibility remained. The data were collected, organized into figures and analyzed for determination of the reliability and reproducibility of the three-dimensional cephalometric landmarks. RESULTS: Overall, the landmarks on the median sagittal line and dental landmarks had the highest reliability, while the landmarks on the condyle, porion and the orbitale presented lower levels of reliability. Point S must be marked in the multiplanar views associated with visualization in 3D reconstruction. Further studies are necessary for evaluating soft tissue landmarks.

BACKGROUND: Older subjects usually show less of their upper incisors and more of their lower incisors than younger subjects. OBJECTIVES: To determine how much of the upper and lower central incisor crowns are visible in Brazilian subjects with their lips at rest. METHODS: The subjects were 240 white Brazilian subjects divided into four age groups: Group 1, 12 to 15 years of age; Group 2, 20 to 30 years of age; Group 3, 31 to 50 years of age and Group 4, 51 years of age and older. Each group contained 30 males and 30 females. The vertical display of the incisors was measured in millimetres from the midpoints of the incisal edges of the upper and lower central incisors to the borders of the upper and lower lips. RESULTS: In females, the mean upper central incisor display reduced from 4.45 mm in Group 1 to 1.32 mm in Group 4, and in males it reduced from 3.35 mm in Group 1 to 0.57 mm in Group 4. Less of the lower central incisor crowns were displayed in Group 1 females (Mean: 0.47 mm) than in Group 4 females (Mean: 2.22 mm), and in Group 1 males (Mean: 0.61 mm) than in Group 4 males (Mean: 3.05 mm). Brazilian women showed significantly more of their upper incisor crowns than Brazilian men in Groups 1, 2 and 4, whereas Brazilian men showed significantly more of their lower central incisors than Brazilian women in Group 4. CONCLUSIONS: With the lips at rest, older Brazilians display less of their upper central incisors and more of their lower central incisors than young Brazilians. Women show more of their upper incisors than men, while men display more of their lower central incisors than women.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the frictional force between orthodontic brackets and archwires. The differences in magnitude of the frictional forces generated by ceramic brackets, ceramic brackets with metal reinforced slot, and stainless steel brackets in combination with stainless steel, nickel-titanium, and beta-titanium orthodontic archwires were investigated. Brackets and wire were tested with tip angulations of 0 degrees and 10 degrees. Friction testing was done with the Emic DL 10000 testing machine (São José do Rio Preto, PR, Brazil), and the wires were pulled from the slot brackets with a speed of 0.5 cm/min for 2 minutes. The ligation force between the bracket and the wire was 200 g. According to the data obtained, the brackets had frictional force values that were statistically significant in this progressive order: stainless steel bracket, ceramic bracket with a metal reinforced slot, and traditional ceramic bracket with a ceramic slot. The beta-titanium wire showed the highest statistically significant frictional force value, followed by the nickel-titanium and the stainless steel archwires, in decreasing order. The frictional force values were directly proportional to the angulation increase between the bracket and the wire.
