RESUMEN

1. While some authors argue that specialization is a threat to holistic nursing practice, others suggest that specialization is not only desirable and inevitable but should follow a rigorous process, including specific educational curriculum and examination procedures. 2. Two opposing views regarding forensic nursing are found in contemporary nursing literature. Some authors resist the discourse of specialization in nursing, while the discursive practices of others (e.g., leaders in forensic psychiatric nursing) could reflect a desire for power. 3. Using a poststructuralist approach, the controversy that has accompanied the development of forensic nursing through discursive practices is analyzed.

RESUMEN

The main purpose of this introductory article is to evoke professional awareness, spark interest, stimulate thought, and disseminate information concerning multiracial, multiethnic (multiple heritage) individuals within the United States. General background information, terms, definitions, ethno-historical influences, practice implications, and current issues will be highlighted. Areas for further exploration will be proposed. Transcultural imperatives urge all nurses and other health care professionals to become active participants in the new cultural evolution of a different, broader worldview that uncovers the "invisible" culture of multiple heritage individuals. The new vision challenges nurse and other health care professionals to embark upon a new journey in the quest for cultural congruent care for all individuals.

RESUMEN

This article discusses the ethical parameters of giving culturally congruent care to individual patients by health care professionals. Leininger's Cultural Care Diversity and Universality theory (Leininger, 1995) is used to demonstrate the importance of culture in a person's life and Husted's and Husted's (1995) bioethical theory is used to create a mind-set of ethical interaction and to direct the analysis of a bioethical dilemma involving cultural differences between persons of the same culture, a depressed Mexican-American woman and her husband. The differences between transculturalism and multiculturalism are explored. We defend the position that a patient's culture is only a useful tool in caring for a patient if the individual person is made the primary focus of care.

RESUMEN

The focus of this study was to discover the experiences of Mexican Americans receiving professional nursing care. The purpose of this study was to explore the care experiences, views, patterns, and meanings of Mexican Americans who have received professional nursing care. The need for this study arises from nursing's lack of knowledge regarding the experiences and cultural values of Mexican Americans receiving professional nursing care and how these values influence the health and/or well being of Mexican Americans.

RESUMEN

Culture is an inextricable part of the fabric that defines each human as an individual, a family member, and a member of local, national, and global communities. This article describes a nursing theory that supports the significance of culture as an essential concept of nursing practice. To illustrate the applicability of these concepts to WOC nursing practice, a case study of a Mexican-American client with an ostomy is presented.

RESUMEN

American Society is becoming increasingly diverse and multi-cultural. Nursing education must recognize the impact this has on our profession, education and care. A private southern university recently embraced culturalism as a conceptual thread in its curriculum and is providing cultural content to better prepare nursing students to provide culturally appropriate care. This study's purpose was to compare the cultural competence and confidence of senior nursing students who had received cultural content (N = 32) with those who had not received any cultural content (N = 33). The Bernal and Froman Cultural Self Efficacy Scale was used. Findings suggest students who received some cultural course content feel less competent and confident to provide culturally sensitive care than those who received no cultural course content.
