RESUMEN

RATIONALE: Radial nerve palsy in the newborn and congenital radial head dislocation (CRHD) are both rare disorders, and early diagnosis is challenging. We reported a case of an infant with concurrent presence of these 2 diseases and provide a comprehensive review of the relevant literature. The purpose of the study is to share diagnostic and treatment experiences and provide potentially valuable insights. PATIENT CONCERNS: A newborn has both radial nerve palsy and CRHD, characterized by limited wrist and fingers extension but normal flexion, normal shoulder and elbow movement on the affected side, characteristic skin lesions around the elbow, and an "audible click" at the radial head. The patient achieved significant improvement solely through physical therapy and observation. DIAGNOSES: The patient was diagnosed with radial nerve palsy in the newborn combined with CRHD. INTERVENTIONS: The patient received regular physical therapy including joint function training, low-frequency pulse electrical therapy, acupuncture, paraffin treatment, as well as overnight splint immobilization. OUTCOMES: The child could actively extend the wrist to a neutral position and extend all fingers. LESSONS: If a neonate exhibits limited extension in the wrist and fingers, but normal flexion, along with normal shoulder and elbow movement, and is accompanied by skin lesions around the elbow, there should be a high suspicion of radial nerve palsy in the newborn.

Refractive index (RI) is an important parameter for contact lens biomaterials. In this paper, a novel polymerizable-group capped ZnS nanoparticle (NP) was synthesized by chemical link between hydroxyl group on the surface of ZnS (ME-capped) and isocyanate group of polymerizable molecule of 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate. Then the ZnS NP copolymerized with monomer of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMA) to prepare high refractive index hydrogel contact lens with high content of inorganic ZnS NP. Increasing polymerizable-group capped ZnS content in the hydrogels improved its RI value and mechanical properties, however decreased slightly its transmittance, equilibrium (ESR) and lysozyme deposition on the hydrogel surface. The ZnS-containing hydrogels possessed good cytocompatibility and in vivo biocompatibility in rabbit eyes, demonstrating a potential application as high RI ocular refractive correction biomaterial.

In this study, a hybrid synthetic gelatin-mono epoxy terminated polydimethylsiloxane polymer (PDMS-E grafted gelatin (PGG)) was successfully synthesized on a large scale. Supramolecular structure of gelatin, which was decided by the sophisticated inter- and intra-molecular interactions, significantly affected the self-assembly and phase behavior of PGG. Interestingly, the supramolecular organization of PGG could be tuned finely by negatively charged surfactants, such as sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium tetradecyl sulfonate (STSo), as revealed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), light microscopy (LM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). SEM images exhibited the presence of spherical aggregates in PGG/SDS films while hexagonal array was observed in PGG/STSo films. The results of LM revealed that when PGG/STSo solution was dried, a successive structural transformation from spheres to hexagons, via sticks and butterfly-shaped aggregates as intermediates, was observed. However, the morphologies of the aggregates formed in PGG/SDS system did not exhibit any obvious change upon drying. Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared spectra combined with AFM observations indicated that the secondary structure and aggregation behavior of gelatin was modified with the change in the electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, leading to the formation of diversified solid-state structures of PGG.
