RESUMEN

Techno-economic assessment (TEA) of a valorization of bulking agent (BA) ratios on the food waste compost value chain is made to assess economic feasibility. TEA was performed with two plans (Plan A: existing composting facilities; Plan B: new composting facilities) and each plan was under four scenarios. The BA (i.e. corn stalks, garden waste, and watermelon seedlings) ratio of 5 % (S1), 10 % (S2), 20 % (S3), and garden waste with a ratio of 20 % (S4). Results indicate that S2, with a net present value (NPV) of 128.9 million, represents Plan A's most economically viable scenario. Although the total operating costs of S4 were 18.9 %-23.5 % higher, 25.6 %-42.2 % higher total revenue made S4 have an NPV of 92.9 million, making it the most viable scenario in Plan B. All scenarios show positive NPV within a ± 20 % fluctuation range. Organic fertilizer price, government subsidies, and processing capacity were the key factors influencing NPV.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play essential roles in developmental processes and disease development at the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels across diverse taxa. However, only few studies have profiled fungal lncRNAs in a genome-wide manner during host infection. RESULTS: Infection-associated lncRNAs were identified using lncRNA profiling over six stages of host infection (e.g., vegetative growth, pre-penetration, biotrophic, and necrotrophic stages) in the model pathogenic fungus, Magnaporthe oryzae. We identified 2,601 novel lncRNAs, including 1,286 antisense lncRNAs and 980 intergenic lncRNAs. Among the identified lncRNAs, 755 were expressed in a stage-specific manner and 560 were infection-specifically expressed lncRNAs (ISELs). To decipher the potential roles of lncRNAs during infection, we identified 365 protein-coding genes that were associated with 214 ISELs. Analysis of the predicted functions of these associated genes suggested that lncRNAs regulate pathogenesis-related genes, including xylanases and effectors. CONCLUSIONS: The ISELs and their associated genes provide a comprehensive view of lncRNAs during fungal pathogen-plant interactions. This study expands new insights into the role of lncRNAs in the rice blast fungus, as well as other plant pathogenic fungi.

RESUMEN

Orchid mycorrhizal fungi are essential for the seed germination and vegetative growth of orchids. The orchid Bletilla striata has great medical value in China because its tuber is rich in mannan. Some endophytic fungi were isolated from the roots of B. striata. The isolate KB-3 was selected for experiments because it could promote the germination of B. striata seeds. Based on morphological characters and phylogenetic analysis, the isolate KB-3 was identified as Fusarium oxysporum. Co-cultivation experiments of KB-3 with B. striata and Dendrobium candidum were performed to demonstrate orchid mycorrhizal structures. Microscopic examination showed that KB-3 established colonization and produced coiled hyphal structures known as pelotons within the cortical cells of both orchid roots. The results confirm that F. oxysporum KB-3 can behave as an orchid mycorrhizal fungus.
