BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is increasingly prevalent among patients with bipolar disorder (BD), raising concerns in psychology and mental health. Investigating the incidence and factors associated with NSSI is crucial for developing prevention and intervention strategies. METHODS: NSSI behaviors were identified using the Ottawa Self-injury Inventory. The Clinically Useful Depression Outcome Scale supplemented with questions for the DSM-5 specifier of mixed features (CUDOS-M) and the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (Hypo-)Manic Episode with Mixed Features-DSM-5 Module (MINI-M) were used to evaluate clinical symptoms. Non-parametric tests, chi-square tests, point-biserial correlation and logistic regression analyses were employed for the purposes of data analysis. RESULTS: The enrolled sample comprised 1044 patients with BD from 20 research centers across China. Out of 1044 individuals, 446 exhibited NSSI behaviors, with 101 of them being adolescents, leading to a prevalence of 78.3 % among adolescent patients. The most common methods for females and males were "cutting" (41.2 %) and "hitting" (34.7 %), respectively. By binary logistic regression analysis, young age, female, bipolar type II disorder, with suicidal ideation and mixed states, depressive symptoms and without family history of mental disorder were correlates of NSSI in patients with BD (P < 0.05). LIMITATIONS: As a cross-sectional study, causality between NSSI behaviors and associated factors cannot be established. Reporting and recall biases may occur due to self-rating scales and retrospective reports. CONCLUSION: Our study indicates a concerning prevalence of NSSI, particularly among young patients with BD in China. Future research should focus on understanding NSSI behaviors in this population and developing effective interventions.

Radiomics offers a noninvasive avenue for predicting clinicopathological factors. However, thorough investigations into a robust breast cancer outcome-predicting model and its biological significance remain limited. This study develops a robust radiomic model for prognosis prediction, and further excavates its biological foundation and transferring prediction performance. We retrospectively collected preoperative dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI data from three distinct breast cancer patient cohorts. In FUSCC cohort (n = 466), Lasso was used to select features correlated with patient prognosis and multivariate Cox regression was utilized to integrate these features and build the radiomic risk model, while multiomic analysis was conducted to investigate the model's biological implications. DUKE cohort (n = 619) and I-SPY1 cohort (n = 128) were used to test the performance of the radiomic signature in outcome prediction. A thirteen-feature radiomic signature was identified in the FUSCC cohort training set and validated in the FUSCC cohort testing set, DUKE cohort and I-SPY1 cohort for predicting relapse-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS) (RFS: p = 0.013, p = 0.024 and p = 0.035; OS: p = 0.036, p = 0.005 and p = 0.027 in the three cohorts). Multiomic analysis uncovered metabolic dysregulation underlying the radiomic signature (ATP metabolic process: NES = 1.84, p-adjust = 0.02; cholesterol biosynthesis: NES = 1.79, p-adjust = 0.01). Regarding the therapeutic implications, the radiomic signature exhibited value when combining clinical factors for predicting the pathological complete response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (DUKE cohort, AUC = 0.72; I-SPY1 cohort, AUC = 0.73). In conclusion, our study identified a breast cancer outcome-predicting radiomic signature in a multicenter radio-multiomic study, along with its correlations with multiomic features in prognostic risk assessment, laying the groundwork for future prospective clinical trials in personalized risk stratification and precision therapy.

In this editorial, we commented on the article by Akers et al published in the recent issue of the World Journal of Clinical Cases. We focused specifically on the role of the transcription factor paired box protein 8 (PAX8) belonging to the family PAX in the carcinogenesis of a gynecologic tumor, endocervical adenocarcinoma, arising from the tissue of mesonephric origin, and the potential diagnostic value for the same type of neoplasms. The global vaccination program of human papillomavirus (HPV) has dramatically reduced the incidence of cervical cancer, including cases of adenocarcinoma. The type of adenoid epithelial origin has a lower frequency of HPV detection but tends to be more aggressive and fatal. Cases of endocervical adenocarcinoma occurring in females of menopause age have been described in the 2023 volume of the World Journal of Clinical Cases and in our study recently published in Oncol Lett. The histopathological findings and immunohistochemical assays showed that the lesions had glandular morphology, and the specimens in these two reports were immunohistochemically positive for the transcription factor PAX8, albeit that they had opposing expression profiles of tumor suppressor p16 and estrogen receptor and the presence of the HPV genome. The presence of a mucin protein, MUC 5AC, as revealed in both studies suggested target molecules for the diagnosis of mucinous adenoid type of uterine tumor and other histological origins. The clinical outcome was unfavorable due to metastasis and recurrence. This prompted the improvement of the antitumor modality, with the introduction of precise targeting therapy. Mucin has now been reported to be the therapeutic target for adenocarcinomas.

INTRODUCTION: Bromodomain-containing protein 4 (BRD4), an important epigenetic reader, is closely associated with the pathogenesis and development of many diseases, including various cancers, inflammation, and infectious diseases. Targeting BRD4 inhibition or protein elimination with small molecules represents a promising therapeutic strategy, particularly for cancer therapy. AREAS COVERED: The recent advances of patented BRD4 degraders were summarized. The challenges, opportunities, and future directions for developing novel potent and selective BRD4 degraders are also discussed. The patents of BRD4 degraders were searched using the SciFinder and Cortellis Drug Discovery Intelligence database. EXPERT OPINION: BRD4 degraders exhibit superior efficacy and selectivity to BRD4 inhibitors, given their unique mechanism of protein degradation instead of protein inhibition. Excitingly, RNK05047 is now in phase I/II clinical trials, indicating that selective BRD4 protein degradation may offer a viable therapeutic strategy, particularly for cancer. Targeting BRD4 with small-molecule degraders provides a promising approach with the potential to overcome therapeutic resistance for treating various BRD4-associated diseases.

We design a multi-effective nanoplatform (CeO2:Nd@SiO2@CeO2:Yb,Er@SiO2-RB/MB/CD36) with down/upconversion dual-mode emissions and targeting ability in foam macrophages. Under NIR excitation, this nanoplatform can realize in vivo NIR-II imaging and PDT/PTT coordinated therapy for early AS simultaneously.

Dietary energy is crucial for ruminants' performance and health. To determine optimal dietary energy levels for growing sheep, we evaluated their growth performance, nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation, barrier function, and microbiota under varying metabolic energy (ME) diets. Forty-five growing Yunnan semi-fine wool sheep, aged 10 months and weighing 30.8 ± 1.9 kg, were randomly allocated to five treatments, each receiving diets with ME levels of 8.0, 8.6, 9.2, 9.8 or 10.4 MJ/kg. The results showed that with increasing dietary energy, the average daily gain (ADG) as well as the digestibility of dry matter (DM) and organic matter (OM) increased (p < 0.05), while the feed conversion ratio (FCR) decreased linearly (p = 0.01). The concentration of total VFA (p = 0.03) and propionate (p = 0.01) in the rumen increased linearly, while rumen pH (p < 0.01) and the acetate-propionate ratio (p = 0.01) decreased linearly. Meanwhile, the protein contents of Claudin-4, Claudin-7, Occludin and ZO-1 as well as the relative mRNA expression of Claudin-4 and Occludin also increased (p < 0.05). In addition, rumen bacterial diversity decreased with the increase of dietary energy, and the relative abundance of some bacteria (like Saccharofermentans, Prevotella and Succiniclasticum) changed. In conclusion, increasing dietary energy levels enhanced growth performance, nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation, and barrier function, and altered the rumen bacterial community distribution. The optimal dietary ME for these parameters in sheep at this growth stage was between 9.8 and 10.4 MJ/kg.

Two sulfur-containing heterodimers of a cytochalasan and a macrolide, sucurchalasins A and B (1 and 2), and four known cytochalasan monomers (3-6), as well as four known macrolide derivatives (7-10), were obtained from the endophytic fungus Aspergillus spelaeus GDGJ-286. Sucurchalasins A and B (1 and 2) are the first cytochalasan heterodimers formed via a thioether bridge between cytochalasan and curvularin macrolide units. Their structures were elucidated by detailed analysis of NMR, LC-MS/MS, and X-ray crystallography. In bioassays, 1 and 2 exhibited cytotoxic effects on A2780 cells, with IC50 values of 3.9 and 8.3 µM, respectively. They also showed antibacterial activities against E. faecalis and B. subtilis with MIC values of 3.1 and 6.3 µg/mL, respectively.

This study aimed to explore the isomer-specific, sex-specific, and joint associations of PFAS and red blood cell indices. We used data of 1,238 adults from the Isomers of C8 Health Project in China. Associations of PFAS isomers and red blood cell indices were explored using multiple linear regression models, Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression models and subgroup analysis across sex. We found that serum concentration of linear (n-) and branched (Br-) isomers of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS) were significantly associated with red blood cell indices in single-pollutant models, with stronger associations observed for n-PFHxS than Br-PFHxS, in women than in men. For instance, the estimated percentage change in hemoglobin concentration for n-PFHxS (3.65%; 95% CI: 2.95%, 4.34%) was larger than that for Br-PFHxS (0.96%; 95% CI: 0.52%, 1.40%). The estimated percentage change in red blood cell count for n-PFHxS in women (2.55%; 95% CI: 1.81%, 3.28%) was significantly higher than that in men (0.12%; 95% CI: -1.04%, 1.29%) (Pinter < 0.001). Similarly, sex-specific positive association of PFAS mixture and outcomes was observed. Therefore, the structure, susceptive population, and joint effect of PFAS isomers should be taken into consideration when evaluating the health risk of chemicals.

Nitroreductase (NTR) is widely regarded as a biomarker whose enzymatic activity correlates with the degree of hypoxia in solid malignant tumors. Herein, we utilized 2-dimethylamino-7-hydroxynaphthalene as fluorophore linked diverse nitroaromatic groups to obtain four NTR-activatable two-photon fluorescent probes based on covalent assembly strategy. With the help of computer docking simulation and in vitro assay, the sulfonate-based probe XN3 was proved to be able to identify NTR activity with best performances in rapid response, outstanding specificity, and sensitivity in comparison with the other three probes. Furthermore, XN3 could detect the degree of hypoxia by monitoring NTR activity in kinds of cancer cells with remarkable signal-to-noise ratios. In cancer tissue sections of the breast and liver in mice, XN3 had the ability to differentiate between healthy and tumorous tissues, and possessed excellent fluorescence stability, high tissue penetration and low tissue autofluorescence. Finally, XN3 was successfully utilized for in situ visualizing NTR activities in human transverse colon and rectal cancer tissues, respectively. The findings suggested that XN3 could directly identify the boundary between cancer and normal tissues by monitoring NTR activities, which provides a new method for imaging diagnosis and intraoperative navigation of tumor tissue.

Background: Kurixaluslenquanensis Yu, Wang, Hou, Rao and Yang, 2017 was originally described, based on 14 adult male specimens from Lengquan Village, Mengzi, Yunnan, China. So far, this species is known only from south-eastern Yunnan and information on females of this species is not available. During the field surveys in 2023, two Kurixalus specimens (one female and one male) were collected from central eastern Yunnan (Shilin, Kunming, Yunnan, China). These two specimens were confirmed to be K.lenquanensis by molecular phylogenetic analyses, based on 16S rRNA sequences. New information: A female specimen of K.lenquanensis is described for the first time and morphological variation amongst populations of this species is provided. The diagnosis and distribution of this species are updated.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial dysfunction and metabolic reprogramming can lead to the development and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Ferredoxin 1 (FDX1) is a small mitochondrial protein and recent studies have shown that FDX1 plays an important role in tumor cuproptosis, but its role in HCC is still elusive. In this study, we aim to investigate the expression and novel functions of FDX1 in HCC. METHODS: FDX1 expression was first analyzed in publicly available datasets and verified by immunohistochemistry, qRT-PCR and Western blot. In vitro and in vivo experiments were applied to explore the functions of FDX1. Non-targeted metabolomics and RNA-sequencing were used to determine molecular mechanism. mRFP-GFP-LC3 lentivirus transfection, Mito-Tracker Red and Lyso-Tracker Green staining, transmission electron microscopy, flow cytometry, JC-1 staining, etc. were used to analyze mitophagy or ROS levels. Hydrodynamic tail vein injection (HTVi) and patient-derived organoid (PDO) models were used to analyze effect of FDX1 overexpression. RESULTS: FDX1 expression is significantly downregulated in HCC tissues. FDX1 downregulation promotes HCC cell proliferation, invasion in vitro and growth, metastasis in vivo. In addition, FDX1 affects metabolism of HCC cells and is associated with autophagy. We then confirmed that FDX1 deficiency increases ROS levels, activates mitophagy and the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway in HCC cells. Interestingly, scavenging ROS attenuates the tumor-promoting role and mitophagy of FDX1 downregulation. The results of HTVi and PDO models both find that FDX1 elevation significantly inhibits HCC progression. Moreover, low FDX1 expression is associated with shorter survival and is an independent risk factor for prognosis in HCC patients. CONCLUSIONS: Our research had investigated novel functions of FDX1 in HCC. Downregulation of FDX1 contributes to metabolic reprogramming and leads to ROS-mediated activation of mitophagy and the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. FDX1 is a potential prognostic biomarker and increasing FDX1 expression may be a potential therapeutic approach to inhibit HCC progression.

Establishing reliable noninvasive tools to precisely diagnose clinically significant liver fibrosis (SF, ≥F2) remains an unmet need. We aimed to build a combined radiomics-clinic (CoRC) model for triaging SF and explore the additive value of the CoRC model to transient elastography-based liver stiffness measurement (FibroScan, TE-LSM). This retrospective study recruited 595 patients with biopsy-proven liver fibrosis at two centers between January 2015 and December 2021. At Center 1, the patients before December 2018 were randomly split into training (276) and internal test (118) sets, the remaining were time-independent as a temporal test set (96). Another data set (105) from Center 2 was collected for external testing. Radiomics scores were built with selected features from Deep learning-based (ResUNet) automated whole liver segmentations on MRI (T2FS and delayed enhanced-T1WI). The CoRC model incorporated radiomics scores and relevant clinical variables with logistic regression, comparing routine approaches. Diagnostic performance was evaluated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). The additive value of the CoRC model to TE-LSM was investigated, considering necroinflammation. The CoRC model achieved AUCs of 0.79 (0.70, 0.86), 0.82 (0.73, 0.89), and 0.81 (0.72-0.91), outperformed FIB-4, APRI (all p < 0.05) in the internal, temporal, and external test sets and maintained the discriminatory power in G0-1 subgroups (AUCs range, 0.85-0.86; all p < 0.05). The AUCs of joint CoRC-LSM model were 0.86 (0.79-0.94), and 0.81 (0.72-0.90) in the internal and temporal sets (p = 0.01). The CoRC model was useful for triaging SF, and may add value to TE-LSM.

BACKGROUND: Focused ultrasound ablation surgery (FUAS) has been widely employed to treat patients with uterine fibroid (UF). This study aimed to estimate myometrial stiffness changes in patients who received FUAS for UFs or myomectomy (ME) and compare the recovery of surrounding myometrium between FUAS and ME groups. Our results may provide more evidence for guiding the proper conception timing in patients with UF. METHODS: This study enrolled 173 patients from May 2022 to August 2023. Shear wave elastography (SWE) was used to dynamically monitor myometrial elasticity changes in patients before and after surgery. Moreover, our study monitored and analyzed the stiffness changes in the targeted fibroid after FUAS, as well as in the myometrium around after FUAS or ME. RESULTS: The stiffness of the myometrium around the resected fibroid was significantly higher than at the preoperative level until 6 months. Conversely, the stiffness of the surrounding myometrium was only temporarily increased 1 day after FUAS. The comparison between FUAS and ME groups regarding the stiffness of the surrounding myometrium showed that nonsignificant differences were detected between the two groups before the treatment. The stiffness of the surrounding myometrium in the ME group was statistically significantly higher than that of the FUAS group 1 day as well as 1, 3, and 6 months after the treatment, respectively. CONCLUSION: The FUAS had less impact on the surrounding myometrium than the ME, which may be more conducive to the recovery of myometrial elasticity in patients with UF.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative neurocognitive disorder (PND) is a critical concern for older patients undergoing cardiac surgery, impacting cognitive function and quality of life. Electroacupuncture and transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) hold promise for mitigating PND. This protocol outlines a systematic review and meta-analysis to thoroughly assess the efficacy of electroacupuncture and TEAS in older patients undergoing cardiac surgery with PND, providing up-to-date evidence for PND prevention and treatment. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to thoroughly assess the efficacy of electroacupuncture and TEAS in older patients undergoing cardiac surgery with PND, providing up-to-date evidence for PND prevention and treatment. METHODS: A comprehensive and systematic approach will be used to identify eligible studies from a diverse range of electronic databases, including 9 major sources such as PubMed (NLM) and Cochrane (Wiley), as well as 2 clinical trial registration websites. These studies will focus on investigating the effects of electroacupuncture and TEAS on PND in older patients undergoing cardiac surgery. The study selection will adhere to the criteria outlined in the patient, intervention, comparison, outcome, and studies (PICOS) format. Data extraction will be carried out by 2 independent researchers (YP and LS), using established tools to evaluate the risk of bias. The primary outcome will be PND incidence, with secondary outcomes including Mini Mental State Examination scores, neuron-specific enolase, S100ß, interleukin-1ß, interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-α, time to first flatus, first defecation, bowel sound recovery, and hospitalization duration to be selectively reported. Adverse events linked to acupuncture, such as bleeding, needle site pain, and local reactions, rather than serious adverse events, will also be considered. Meta-analysis will be performed using appropriate statistical methods to assess the overall effect of electroacupuncture and TEAS on PND prevention, treatment, or other relevant outcomes. The Cochrane Collaboration Risk of Bias tool will be used for assessment, and data synthesis will be executed using the RevMan 5.4 software (Cochrane). RESULTS: We plan to summarize the eligible studies through the use of a PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) flowchart. The findings will be showcased in the form of a summary table of evidence. Figures and forest plots will be used to illustrate the outcomes of the meta-analysis. CONCLUSIONS: The impacts of electroacupuncture and TEAS interventions on PND in older patients undergoing cardiac surgery have not yet been established. This protocol addresses a critical gap by thoroughly assessing electroacupuncture and TEAS for PND in older patients undergoing cardiac surgery, enhancing understanding of nonpharmacological interventions, and guiding future research and clinical practices in this field. Its strength lies in rigorous methodology, including comprehensive search strategies, independent review processes, and thorough assessments of the risk of bias. Climate change and human activities have increased droughts, especially overgrazing and deforestation, which seriously threaten the balance of terrestrial ecosystems. The ecological carrying capacity and vegetation cover in the arid zone of Xinjiang, China, are generally low, necessitating research on vegetation response to drought in such arid regions. In this study, we analyzed the spatial and temporal characteristics of drought in Xinjiang from 2001 to 2020 and revealed the response mechanism of SIF to multi-timescale drought in different vegetation types using standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI), solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF), normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) data. We employed trend analysis, standardized anomaly index (SAI), Pearson correlation, and trend prediction techniques. Our investigation focused on the correlations between GOSIF (a new SIF product based on the Global Orbital Carbon Observatory-2), NDVI, and EVI with SPEI12 for different vegetation types over the past two decades. Additionally, we examined the sensitivities of vegetation GOSIF to various scales of SPEI in a typical drought year and predicted future drought trends in Xinjiang. The results revealed that the spatial distribution characteristics of GOSIF, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and enhanced vegetation index (EVI) were consistent, with mean correlations with SPEI at 0.197, 0.156, and 0.128, respectively. GOSIF exhibited the strongest correlation with SPEI, reflecting the impact of drought stress on vegetation photosynthesis. Therefore, GOSIF proves advantageous for drought monitoring purposes. Most vegetation types showed a robust response of GOSIF to SPEI at a 9-month scale during a typical drought year, with grassland GOSIF being particularly sensitive to drought. Our trend predictions indicate a decreasing trend in GOSIF vegetation in Xinjiang, coupled with an increasing trend in drought. This study found that compared with that of the traditional greenness vegetation index, GOSIF has obvious advantages in monitoring drought in the arid zone of Xinjiang. Furthermore, it makes up for the lack of research on the mechanism of vegetation GOSIF response to drought on multiple timescales in the arid zone. These results provide strong theoretical support for investigating the monitoring, assessment, and prediction of vegetation response to drought in Xinjiang, which is vital for comprehending the mechanisms of carbon and water cycles in terrestrial ecosystems.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease featured by chronic synovitis and progressive joint damage. Early treatment before the onset of clinical symptoms (also known as the pre-RA stage) may slow or stop the progression of the disease. We sought to discover the dynamic metabolic changes during the evolution of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) to better characterize the disease stages. Untargeted metabolomics analysis using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed that the metabolic profiles of CIA mice gradually differed from that of the control group with the progression of the disease. During the induction phase, the CIA group showed some metabolic alterations in galactose metabolism, arginine biosynthesis, tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA cycle), pyruvate metabolism, and starch/sucrose metabolism. During the early inflammatory phase, no joint swelling was observed in CIA mice, and metabolites changed mainly involving amino acid metabolism (arginine biosynthesis, arginine/proline metabolism, phenylalanine/tyrosine/tryptophan biosynthesis), and glutathione metabolism. During the peak inflammatory phase, severe arthritis symptoms were observed in CIA mice, and there were more extensive metabolic alterations in valine/leucine/isoleucine biosynthesis, phenylalanine/tyrosine/tryptophan biosynthesis, TCA cycle, galactose metabolism, and arginine biosynthesis. Moreover, the reduction of specific amino acids, such as glycine, serine, and proline, during the early stages may result in an imbalance in macrophage polarization and enhance the inflammatory response in CIA mice. Our study confirmed that specific perturbations in amino acid metabolism have occurred in CIA mice prior to the onset of joint symptoms, which may be related to autoimmune disorders. The findings could provide insights into the metabolic mechanism and the diagnosis of pre-RA.

Earthworms are essential components in temperate forest ecosystems, yet the patterns of change in earthworm-associated microbial communities across different temperate forests remain unclear. This study employed high-throughput sequencing technology to compare bacterial community composition and structure in three earthworm-associated microhabitats (skin, gut, and habitat soil) across three typical temperate forests in China, and investigated the influence of environmental factors on these differential patterns. The results indicate that: (1) From warm temperate forests to cold temperate forests, the soil pH of the habitat decreased significantly. In contrast, the physicochemical properties of earthworm skin mucus exhibited different trends compared to those of the habitat soil. (2) Alpha diversity analysis revealed a declining trend in Shannon indices across all three microhabitats. (3) Beta diversity analysis revealed that the transition from warm temperate deciduous broad-leaved forest to cold temperate coniferous forest exerted the most significant impact on the gut bacterial communities of earthworms, while its influence on the skin bacterial communities was comparatively less pronounced. (4) Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria were the predominant phyla in earthworm skin, gut, and habitat soil, but the trends in bacterial community composition differed among the three microhabitats. (5) Mantel tests revealed significant correlations between bacterial community structures and climatic factors, physicochemical properties of earthworm habitat soil, and physicochemical properties of earthworm skin mucus. The findings of this study offer novel perspectives on the interplay between earthworms, microorganisms, and the environment within forest ecosystems.

Objective: The aim of our study was to explore the relationship between changes in neural oscillatory power in the EEG, the severity of depressive-anxiety symptoms, and the risk of suicide in MDD. Methods: 350 MDD patients' demographic and clinical data were collected, and their depressive and anxious symptoms were evaluated using HDRS-17 and HAMA-14, along with a suicide risk assessment using the Nurses' Global Assessment of Suicide Risk (NGASR). EEG data were captured, processed, and analyzed to study brain activity patterns related to MDD. The participants were divided based on suicide risk levels, and statistical analyses, including chi-square, t-tests, Pearson's correlations were used to explore the associations between brain activity, symptom severity, and suicide risk. Closely related variables were identified and ultimately the optimal model was screened using stepwise regression analysis with a forward strategy, and mediation effects were further used to determine the possible interactions between the variables in the regression model. Results: The regression model showed a significant effect of HDRS-17 and alpha power of Medial Occipital Cortex (MOC) on suicide risk, with elevated HDRS-17 increasing suicide risk and elevated alpha power decreasing suicide risk. Mediation effect analyses showed that MOC alpha power partially mediated the effect of depression level on suicide risk, and that an increase in depression severity may lead to a decrease in MOC alpha power, while a decrease in MOC alpha power may lead to an increase in suicide risk. Conclusion: The severity of depression directly increases suicide risk, whereas higher alpha power in the MOC serves as a protective factor, reducing this risk. Notably, MOC alpha power not only directly impacts suicide risk but also mediates the effects of both depression severity and anxiety levels on this risk. Limitations: The relatively small sample size of this study may limit the representativeness of the overall MDD patient population and the detailed analysis of different subgroups. This study did not delve into the relationship between the severity of cognitive symptoms in MDD patients and suicide risk.

Globally, a great number of children have been suffering from physical dysfunction and psychological stress due to uncontrollable scar growth and a lack of effective modalities. Despite chemotherapy's established role as a primary treatment for pathological scarring in adults, its efficacy in preventing or minimizing scar formation in paediatric patients remains underexplored. This retrospective cohort study aimed to refine the relevant clinical evidence and investigate the effect of chemotherapy on pathological scars in children. In this single-centre retrospective cohort study, the data of children aged ≤18 years who underwent thoracic surgery at the Children's Hospital of Fudan University between 1 January 2018, and 31 December 2021 were assessed. The primary outcome was pathological scarring, and the secondary outcomes were subjective symptoms accompanying pathological scarring, such as pain and itching. To mitigate indication bias, analysis was performed by inverse probability weighting (IPTW) log-binomial regression models. The cohort comprised 102 children, among whom 36 received adjuvant chemotherapy perioperatively, while 66 did not. Under the IPTW model, a statistically significant difference in pathological scarring incidence was observed between the chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy groups (16.7% vs. 29.4%, p = 0.027). And the children received chemotherapy post-operatively had a lower relative risk of pathological scarring, compared with those received chemotherapy both before and after surgery (19.8% vs. 28.8%). Adjuvant chemotherapy treatment after surgery may reduce the incidence of post-operative pathological scarring in children.

The diet breadth of generalist herbivores when compared to specialists tends to be associated with greater transcriptional plasticity. Here, we consider whether it may also contribute to variation in host range among two generalists with different levels of polyphagy. We examined two related polyphagous spider mites with different host ranges, Tetranychus urticae (1200 plants) and Tetranychus truncatus (90 plants). Data from multiple populations of both species domesticated on common beans and transferred to new plant hosts (cotton, cucumber, eggplant) were used to investigate transcriptional plasticity relative to population-based variation in gene expression. Compared to T. truncatus, T. urticae exhibited much higher transcriptional plasticity. Populations of this species also showed much more variable expression regulation in response to a plant host, particularly for genes related to detoxification, transport, and transcriptional factors. In response to the different plant hosts, both polyphagous species showed enriched processes of drug/xenobiotics metabolism, with T. urticae orchestrating a relatively broader array of biological pathways. Through co-expression network analysis, we identified gene modules associated with host plant response, revealing shared hub genes primarily involved in detoxification metabolism when both mites fed on the same plants. After silencing a shared hub CYP gene related to eggplant exposure, the performance of both species on the original bean host improved, but the fecundity of T. truncatus decreased when feeding on eggplant. The extensive transcriptomic variation shown by T. urticae might serve as a potential compensatory mechanism for a deficiency of hub genes in this species. This research points to nuanced differences in transcriptomic variability between generalist herbivores.
