BACKGROUND: Cross-border malaria transmission in China is a major component of Chinese imported malaria cases. Such cases mostly are travellers returning from malaria endemic countries in Africa. By investigating malaria infectious status among Chinese worker in Africa, this study analysed the malaria risk factors, in order to establish infectious forecast model. METHODS: Chinese returnees data from Africa were collected at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, Guangzhou, China between August 2015 and March 2016 and were included in the cross-sectional and retrospective survey. RESULTS: A total of 1492 respondents were included in the study with the majority consisting of junior middle school educated male. Most of them are manual and technical workers hired by companies, with average of 37.04 years of age. Overall malaria incidence rate of the population was 8.98% (134/1492), and there were no significant differences regarding age, gender, occupation, or team. Forecast model was developed on the basis of malaria risk factors including working country, local ecological environment type, work duration and intensity of mosquito bite prevention. CONCLUSIONS: The survey suggested that malaria incidence was high among Chinese travellers who had worked in Africa countries of heavy malaria burden. Further research on the frequency and severity of clinical episodes among Chinese travellers having worked in Africa is needed.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the correlation of O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) to radiation sensitivity of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). METHODS: Eighty randomly selected NPC patients were divided into high (+/++, n=62) and low (-/+/+, n=18) MGMT groups according to the results of MGMT detection using immunohistochemistry. All the patients received irradiation with external beam radiotherapy, and the radiation sensitivity of NPC was analyzed after the irradiation. RESULTS: The rates of high and low radiation sensitivity were 83.3% and 16.7% in low MGMT group, respectively, showing significant differences from those of the high MGMT group (45.2% and 54.8%, respectively, chi(2)=4.393, P=0.036). CONCLUSION: The content of MGMT correlates to the radiation sensitivity of NPC and may serve as valuable indicators for predicting the radiation sensitivity of NPC.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of intensity-modulated radiation therapy(IMRT) combined with Delisheng injection for treatment of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). METHODS: Sixty-six patients with pathologically confirmed NPC (stage II and III) were randomized into therapeutic group and control group. Patients in the therapeutic group were treated with Delisheng injection in addition to IMRT and those in the control group with IMRT alone. RESULTS: No significant difference in the response rate occurred between the two groups. The incidence of adverse effects was significantly lower in the therapeutic group than in the control group, and the humoral immunity was improved in the former. CONCLUSION: Delisheng injection can decrease the side effects of IMRT and improve humoral immunity in NPC patients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of inducible costimulator (ICOS) in the pathogenesis of SLE, we assessed its expression on peripheral blood CD4 and CD8 T cells and functional roles in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHODS: Expression of ICOS on peripheral blood CD4 and CD8 T cells and ICOS ligand (ICOSL) on peripheral blood CD19 B cells from patients with SLE, patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and healthy volunteers were determined by two-colour flow cytometry. The functional costimulatory effects of ICOS on peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were assessed by T-cell proliferative responses, cytokines, anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) antibody and total IgG production. RESULTS: Peripheral blood CD4 and CD8 T cells expressing ICOS were significantly increased in patients with SLE compared with patients with RA and healthy subjects. Peripheral blood CD19 B cells expressing ICOSL in SLE were markedly reduced compared with RA. Proliferative responses of anti-CD3/ICOS costimulation were significantly higher than those of anti-CD3/hamster IgG (HIgG) in healthy subjects, but not in patients with SLE. Anti-CD3/ICOS-stimulated SLE PBMC secreted similar levels of IL-10 and IFN-gamma but a significantly lower level of IL-2 than healthy PBMC. Anti-CD3/ICOS-mediated costimulation significantly enhanced the production of anti-dsDNA antibodies and total IgG in patients with SLE. CONCLUSION: Hyperexpression of ICOS on peripheral blood CD4 and CD8 T cells from patients with SLE contributed to the dysregulated T-cell proliferation, T-cell activation and pathogenic autoantibody production, which showed that the abnormality of ICOS costimulation may play an immunopathological role(s) in the pathogenesis of SLE.
