RESUMEN

Objective: This study aimed to explore the relationship between climatic parameters and the daily cases of Bell's palsy (BP) among hospital outpatients, providing ecological evidence for understanding BP etiology and prevention. Methods: Retrospective analysis was conducted on data from 2187 BP patients who attended Kunshan First People's Hospital Outpatient Clinic from January 1, 2020, to December 31, 2022. Meteorological data, including temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, wind speed, sunshine duration, and atmospheric pressure, were collected and combined with daily BP case records. Additionally, air quality index was used as a covariate. Results: The number of new BP cases among outpatients showed a negative correlation with average daily temperature. A nonlinear relationship between daily average temperature and BP cases was observed through the generalized additive model (GAM). A significant negative correlation was identified between daily average temperature and BP cases, with inflection points at temperatures above 4.2°C, suggesting a potential decrease in BP risk with temperature rise beyond this threshold. Conclusion: This study provides ecological evidence of a link between climatic factors and BP occurrence. Temperature demonstrated a significant nonlinear negative correlation with daily BP incidence, highlighting temperature and cold exposure as key targets for BP prevention in Kunshan.

Background: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a type of squamous head and neck cancer with variable geographic distributions, with the highest incidence in Southeast Asia. Its primary treatment is radiotherapy due to its high radio sensitivity. However, the N6-methyladenosine (m6A) landscape in NPC, including recurrent NPC, has not been reported. Methods: In this study, m6A RNA immunoprecipitation (RIP) sequencing and microarray sequencing were performed on 12 tissue samples tissues of patients with primary and recurrent NPC. The expression profiles of m6A-related and non-coding RNAs were constructed and explored. Then, function experiments were performed to evaluate the effects of methyltransferase (METTL)3, METTL14 and WT1 associated protein (WTAP) on progressions of NPC. Finally, immunohistochemistry (IHC) and survival analysis were performed to confirm the correlation between METTL3, METTL14 and WTAP and NPC patients' clinical outcomes. Results: This study mapped m6A RNA modification and RNA expression profiles in normal nasopharynx, primary NPC, and recurrent NPC tissues. This study also explored the role of m6A modificators in NPC development and recurrence. METTL3, METTL14, and WTAP could promote invasion and metastasis of NPC, and that these three proteins could induce radiotherapy resistance in NPC cells through DNA repair. Moreover, we found that METTL3, METTL14, and WTAP promoted an increase in exosomes within NPC microenvironment. Conclusions: This study suggests that the alteration of m6A modification in primary and recurrent NPCs may play an important role in the development and progression of NPC.

Nematicidal activity at different concentrations of fosthiazate against soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines) was evaluated in this paper. The mortality rates of second-stage juvenile (J2) reached 13.43, 48.39, 66.82, 79.77, and 86.35% at 12 hr after exposure to 2.18, 3.44, 5.45, 8.61, and 13.62 mg/l of fosthiazate, respectively, whereas cumulative hatching rates totaled 58.24, 53.88, 42.54, 24.11, and 13.69% at 18 days after exposure to concentrations. J2s dead by exposure to fosthiazate exhibited shrunk and twisted body shape, whose length of nematode body, stylet, and esophageal glands to head were significantly shorter than that of the control (p < 0.05). A pot test was also performed to count the numbers of cysts on soybean roots, showing reduction of 43.64-97.94% due to application of fosthiazate at 5.45, 13.62, 34.04, and 85.10 mg/l concentrations.
