RESUMEN

Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate to ammonia has been considered a promising and sustainable pathway for pollutant treatment and ammonia has significant potential as a clean energy. Therefore, the method has received much attention. In this work, Cu/Fe 2D bimetallic metal-organic frameworks were synthesized by a facile method applied as cathode materials without high-temperature carbonization. Bimetallic centers (Cu, Fe) with enhanced intrinsic activity demonstrated higher removal efficiency. Meanwhile, the 2D nanosheet reduced the mass transfer barrier between the catalyst and nitrate and increased the reaction kinetics. Therefore, the catalysts with a 2D structure showed much better removal efficiency than other structures (3D MOFs and Bulk MOFs). Under optimal conditions, Cu/Fe-2D MOF exhibited high nitrate removal efficiency (87.8%) and ammonium selectivity (89.3%) simultaneously. The ammonium yielded up to significantly 907.2 µg/(hr·mgcat) (7793.8 µg/(hr·mgmetal)) with Faradaic efficiency of 62.8% at an initial 100 mg N/L. The catalyst was proved to have good stability and was recycled 15 times with excellent effect. DFT simulations confirm the reduced Gibbs free energy of Cu/Fe-2D MOF. This study demonstrates the promising application of Cu/Fe-2D MOF in nitrate reduction to ammonia and provides new insights for the design of efficient electrode materials.

RESUMEN

To better understand the migration behavior of plastic fragments in the environment, development of rapid non-destructive methods for in-situ identification and characterization of plastic fragments is necessary. However, most of the studies had focused only on colored plastic fragments, ignoring colorless plastic fragments and the effects of different environmental media (backgrounds), thus underestimating their abundance. To address this issue, the present study used near-infrared spectroscopy to compare the identification of colored and colorless plastic fragments based on partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA), extreme gradient boost, support vector machine and random forest classifier. The effects of polymer color, type, thickness, and background on the plastic fragments classification were evaluated. PLS-DA presented the best and most stable outcome, with higher robustness and lower misclassification rate. All models frequently misinterpreted colorless plastic fragments and its background when the fragment thickness was less than 0.1mm. A two-stage modeling method, which first distinguishes the plastic types and then identifies colorless plastic fragments that had been misclassified as background, was proposed. The method presented an accuracy higher than 99% in different backgrounds. In summary, this study developed a novel method for rapid and synchronous identification of colored and colorless plastic fragments under complex environmental backgrounds.

RESUMEN

Research on the pathophysiological mechanism of carotid artery dissection and its clinical translation is limited due to the lack of effective animal models to simulate the occurrence of this condition. Assuming that intimal injury is an important factor in the formation of carotid dissection, we established a novel method for inducing carotid dissection models by scraping the carotid intima using a fine needle. Scraping the carotid intima with fine needles can induce the rapid formation of carotid dissection. Magnetic resonance imaging and hematoxylin-eosin staining suggest the presence of false lumens and mural hematomas in the vessels. Our model-induction technique, inspired by iatrogenic catheter-induced artery dissections (carotid, coronary, aortic), significantly mimics the pathological process of clinical carotid dissection. The results suggest that mechanical injury may be a significant cause of carotid dissection and that intimal injury is a major factor in the formation of arterial dissections. This approach will provide assistance in the understanding of medically induced arterial dissection.

RESUMEN

Soybean provides protein, oil and multiple health-related compounds. Understanding the effects of structural variations (SVs) on economic traits in modern breeding is important for soybean improvement. Here we assembled the high-quality genome of modern cultivar Nongdadou2 (NDD2) and identified 25,814 SV-gene pairs compared to 29 reported genomes, with 13 NDD2-private SVs validated in 547 deep-resequencing (average = 18.05-fold) accessions, which advances our understanding of genomic variation biology. We found some insertions/deletions involved in seed protein and weight formation, an inversion related to adaptation to drought and a large intertranslocation implicated in a key divergence event in soybean. Of 749,714 SVs from 547 accessions, 6,013 were significantly associated with 22 yield-related and seed-quality-related traits determined in ten location × year environments. We uncovered 1,761 associated SVs that hit genes or regulatory regions, with 12 in GmMQT influencing oil and isoflavone contents. Our work provides resources and insights into SV roles in soybean improvement.

RESUMEN

Mesoscale to nanoscale three-dimensional (3D) fabrication mostly requires complicated industry processing techniques. Here, we present a protocol for 3D shaping control by solidifying a water-based TiO2 nanofluid drop on a polygonal wettability-patterned surface. We detail the steps for preparing stable TiO2 nanofluid and wettability-patterned surfaces. We then describe the experimental procedure to obtain various and precise 3D morphologies by adjusting the deposited TiO2 nanofluid drop volume. This protocol provides a promising technique for future 3D manufacturing. For complete details on the use and execution of this protocol, please refer to Jiang et al.1.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate whether contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) could be used to reveal the status of blood supply of the superficial flap of rat model in the early postoperative stage. METHODS: One viable and one ischemic random-pattern flap were prepared on the left and right back of the same rat respectively with a number of 40. CEUS examinations were applied within 12 h and 7 days postoperatively, and the quantitative measurements of microvascular blood volume (BV) of the base and the end of both flaps were expressed using acoustic intensity as a ratio to that of the healthy skin. RESULTS: Within 12 h post operation, there was a smaller BV value of the ischemic ends than that of both the ischemic bases and viable ends (p < 0.001), while no difference was indicated between ischemic bases and viable bases or between viable bases and viable ends. The same result was provided 7 days post operation. CONCLUSION: Microcirculation of superficial tissues such as random-pattern flaps in this rat model can be assessed quantitatively by CEUS. It could sensitively and accurately reveal the objective status of tissue perfusion in the early postoperative stage.

RESUMEN

Two-terminal monolithic perovskite-silicon tandem solar cells demonstrate huge advantages in power conversion efficiency (PCE) compared to their respective single-junction counterparts1,2. However, suppressing interfacial recombination at the wide-bandgap perovskite/electron transport layer interface, without compromising its superior charge transport performance, remains a significant challenge for perovskite-silicon tandem cells3,4. By exploiting the nanoscale discretely distributed LiF ultrathin layer followed by an additional deposition of diammonium diiodide molecule, we have devised a bilayer intertwined passivation strategy that combines efficient electron extraction with further suppression of nonradiative recombination. We constructed perovskite-silicon tandem devices on double-side textured Czochralski (CZ)-based silicon heterojunction cell, which featured a mildly-textured front surface and a heavily-textured rear surface, leading to simultaneously enhanced photocurrent and uncompromised rear passivation. The resulting perovskite-silicon tandem achieved an independently certified stabilized PCE of 33.89%, accompanied by an impressive fill factor (FF) of 83.0% and an open-circuit voltage (Voc) of nearly 1.97 volts. To our knowledge, this represents the first reported certified efficiency of a two-junction tandem solar cell exceeding the single-junction Shockley-Queisser limit of 33.7%.

RESUMEN

The benefits of femtosecond laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (FS-LASIK) for correcting vision, particularly in terms of spherical equivalent (SE) and visual acuity (VA), have gained broad recognition. Nevertheless, it has remained uncertain whether FS-LASIK has a positive impact on contrast sensitivity (CS). In this study, we measured CS on seven participants by the quick contrast sensitivity function (qCSF) and compared CS before and after the surgery at two time points (1 day and 7 days after) by the repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). Then, we clarified the underlying mechanisms using the perceptual template model (PTM). Furthermore, we investigated the relationship among SE, VA, and CS employing the Pearson correlation test. We found that (1) CS exhibited significant improvements on postoperative day 1, with further enhancements observed up to postoperative day 7, (2) CS improvements were dependent on spatial frequency (SF) and external noise, (3) CS improvements were attributed to the reduction of internal noise and the enhancement of the perceptual template, (4) VA and SE demonstrated significant improvement post-surgery, and (5) no significant correlations were observed among SE, VA, and CS, possibly due to limitations in sample size and lighting conditions. These findings contribute to our comprehension of FS-LASIK and provide a great indicator for assessing the outcomes of visual surgery.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Robot guidance (RG) and computer-assisted navigation (CAN) have been increasingly utilized for posterior cervical screw placement in cervical spine surgery, and cervical screw malposition may contribute to catastrophic complications. However, the superiority of the navigation using RG or CAN compared with conventional freehand (FH) techniques remains controversial, and no meta-analysis comparing the two methods in cervical spine surgery has been performed. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang databases were searched for eligible literature. Studies reporting the primary outcomes of the accuracy of cervical screw placement using RG or CAN compared with FH techniques were included. Bias was evaluated using the Cochrane risk of bias criteria and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The outcomes were evaluated in terms of odds ratio or standardized mean difference and corresponding 95% confidence interval. RESULTS: One randomized controlled trial and 18 comparative cohort studies published between 2012 and 2023 consisting of 946 patients and 4163 cervical screws were included in this meta-analysis. The RG and CAN techniques were associated with a substantially higher rate of optimal and clinically acceptable cervical screw accuracy than FH techniques. Furthermore, compared with the FH group, the navigation group showed fewer postoperative adverse events, less blood loss, shorter hospital lengths of stay, and lower postoperative Neck Disability Index scores. However, the navigation and FH groups had equivalent intraoperative times and postoperative visual analog scale and Japanese Orthopaedic Association scores at the final follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Both RG and CAN are superior to FH techniques in terms of the accuracy of cervical screw placement. Navigation techniques, including RG and CAN methods, are accurate, safe, and feasible in cervical spine surgery.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The relationship between a nurse and a patient is a key part of nursing that can impact how happy the patient is with the care they receive. It appears that the nurse's mental health can also affect this connection. However, there is little research on this topic. So, the aim of the present study was to determine the correlation of nurse's mental health with nurse-patient relational care and nursing care satisfaction. METHODS: A total of 532 nurses and 532 patients from 13 Level-III hospitals of Hubei province (China) completed a China Mental Health Survey, general information questionnaire, the Nursing Care Satisfaction Scale, and Relational Care Scale. RESULTS: Age, nurse working years, and night shift last month were correlated with mental health score (r = -0.142, r = -0.150, r = 0.164, p < 0.05). Nurse's mental health was correlated with relational care score and nursing care satisfaction score (r = -0.177, r = -0.325, p < 0.05). Also, relational care score, patients age and gender were correlated with nursing care satisfaction score (r = 0.584 and r = 0.143, x2 = 11.636, p < 0.05). Descriptive information of nurses had a direct impact on nurses' mental health (direct effect = 0.612, 0.419-0.713). Nurses' mental health had a direct effect on relational care score (direct effect = 0.493, 0.298-0.428) and an indirect effect on nursing care satisfaction score (indirect effect = 0.051, 0.032-0.074). Relational care score and patient's descriptive information had also a direct effect on nursing care satisfaction score (direct effect = 0.232, 0.057-0.172 and 0.057, 0.347-0.493). CONCLUSION: This study showed that the better the mental health of nurses, the more patients feel satisfied with nursing services.

RESUMEN

This study presents a comprehensive analysis of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with waste transfer and transport, incorporating derived leachate treatment-a factor often overlooked in existing research. Employing an integration model of life cycle assessment and a vehicle routing problem (VRP) methods, we evaluated the GHG reduction potential of waste transfer and transport system. Two Chinese counties with different topographies and demographics were selected, yielding 80 scenarios that factored in waste source separation as well as vehicle capacity, energy sources, and routes. The functional unit (FU) is transferring and transporting 1 tonne waste and treating derived leachate. The GHG emissions varied from 12 to 39 kg CO2 equivalent per FU. Waste source separation emerged as the most impactful mitigation strategy, not only for the studied system but for an integrated waste management system. Followings are the use of larger capacity vehicles and electrification of the vehicles. These insights are instrumental for policymakers and stakeholders in optimizing waste management systems to reduce GHG emissions.

RESUMEN

Protonic ceramic electrochemical cells (PCECs) have demonstrated great promise for applications in the generation of electricity, and the synthesis of chemicals (for example, ethylene). However, enhancing the electrochemical reactions kinetics and stability of PCECs electrodes is one grand challenge. Here, we present a novel electrode material via a co-doping of cesium (Cs) and niobium (Nb) on PrBaCo2O6-δ with the composition of PrBa0.9Cs0.1Co1.9Nb0.1O6-δ (PBCCN), which naturally decomposes into dual phases of a double-perovskite PBCCN (DP-PBCCN, ∼92.3 wt%) and a single-perovskite Ba0.9Cs0.1Co0.95Nb0.05O3-δ (SP-BCCN, ∼7.7 wt%) under typical powder processing conditions. PBCCN exhibits a low area-specific resistance (ASR) value of 0.107 Ω cm2, an outstanding performance of 2.04 W cm-2 in fuel cell (FC) mode, a current density of -2.84 A cm-2 at 1.3 V in electrolysis cell (EC) mode, and promising reversible operational durability of 53 cycles in ∼212 h at +/- 0.5 A cm-2 and 650 °C. Cs doping generates more oxygen vacancies and accelerates the oxygen exchange kinetics, while Nb doping effectively enhances the stability, as illustrated by the analyses of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electrical conductivity relaxations. When applied as the positrode for electrochemical non-oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (C2H6) to ethylene (C2H4) on PCECs, it displays an encouraging C2H6 conversion of 12.75% and a C2H4 selectivity of 98.4% at 1.2 V.

RESUMEN

Rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivation using direct seeding is susceptible to chilling stress, particularly during seed germination and early seedling growth in the early season of a double cropping system. Alternatively, seed priming with various plant growth-promoting hormones is an effective technique to promote rapid and uniform emergence under chilling stress. Therefore, we evaluated the impact of gibberellin A3 (GA3) and brassinolide (BR) priming on rice seed emergence, examining their proteomic responses under low-temperature conditions. Results indicated that GA3 and BR increased the seed germination rate by 22.67% and 7.33% at 72 h and 35% and 15% at 96 h compared to the control (CK), respectively. Furthermore, proteomic analysis identified 2551, 2614, and 2592 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) in GA, BR, and CK, respectively. Among them, GA exhibited 84 upregulated and 260 downregulated DEPs, while BR showed 112 upregulated and 102 downregulated DEPs, and CK had 123 upregulated and 81 downregulated DEPs. Notably, under chilling stress, both GA3 and BR are involved in peroxide metabolism, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and inositol phosphate metabolism, enhancing antioxidant capacity and providing energy substances for germination. In addition, GA3 triggers the specific regulation of stress responsive protein activation, GTP activation, and ascorbic acid biosynthesis and promotes the stability and integrity of cell membranes, as well as the synthesis of cell walls, providing physical defense for seeds to resist low temperatures. At the same time, BR triggers specific involvement in ribosome synthesis and amino acid synthesis, promoting biosynthetic ability and metabolic regulation to maintain plant life activities under low-temperature stress. Furthermore, the various genes' expression (OsJ_16716, OsPAL1, RINO1) confirmed GA3 and BR involved in peroxide metabolism, phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, and inositol phosphate metabolism, enhancing antioxidant capacity and providing energy substances for germination. This study provides valuable insights into how rice seed embryo responds to and tolerates chilling stress with GA3 seed priming.

RESUMEN

Several chemotherapeutics against breast cancer are constrained by their adverse effects and chemoresistance. The development of novel chemotherapeutics to target metastatic breast cancer can bring effective clinical outcomes. Many breast cancer patients present with tumors that are positive for estrogen receptors (ERs), highlighting the importance of targeting the ER pathway in this particular subtype. Although selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) are commonly used, their side effects and resistance issues necessitate the development of new ER-targeting agents. In this study, we report that a newly synthesized compound, TTP-5, a hybrid of pyrimidine, triazole, and tert-butyl-piperazine-carboxylate, effectively binds to estrogen receptor alpha (ERα) and suppresses breast cancer cell growth. We assessed the impact of TTP-5 on cell proliferation using MTT and colony formation assays and evaluated its effect on cell motility through wound healing and invasion assays. We further explored the mechanism of action of this novel compound by detecting protein expression changes using Western blotting. Molecular docking was used to confirm the interaction of TTP-5 with ERα. The results indicated that TTP-5 significantly reduced the proliferation of MCF-7 cells by blocking the ERα signaling pathway. Conversely, although it did not influence the growth of MDA-MB-231 cells, TTP-5 hindered their motility by modulating the expression of proteins associated with epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), possibly via the Wnt/ß-catenin pathway.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To provide guidance for clinical endotypes by constructing a risk-predictive model of eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (ECRSwNP). DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SETTING: Single-centre trial at tertiary medical institutions. PARTICIPANTS: A cross-sectional study included 343 CRSwNP patients divided into ECRSwNP (n = 237) and non-ECRSwNP (n = 106) groups using surgical pathology. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Single-factor and multivariate analysis were used to identify statistically significant variables for constructing a nomogram, including the history of AR, hyposmia score, ethmoid sinus score, BEP and BEC. The model's performance was evaluated based on the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, calibration curve and decision curve analysis (DCA). RESULTS: Allergic rhinitis, hyposmia score, ethmoid sinus score, peripheral blood eosinophil percentage (BEP) and eosinophil count (BEC) were retained for the construction nomogram of ECRSwNP. The nomogram exhibited a certain accuracy, with an AUC of 0.897 (95% CI: 0.864-0.930), good agreement in the calibration curve and a 0.891 C-index of internal validation. Moreover, the DCA with a threshold probability between 0.0167 and 1.00 indicated a higher net benefit and greater clinical utility. CONCLUSION: The construction of a predictive risk model of ECRSwNP based on easily accessible factors could assist clinicians in more conveniently defining endotypes to make optimal diagnoses and treatment choices.

RESUMEN

The mismatch between solar radiation resources and building heating demand on a seasonal scale makes cross-seasonal heat storage a crucial technology, especially for plateau areas. Utilizing phase change materials with high energy density and stable heat output effectively improves energy storage efficiency. This study integrates cascaded phase change with a cross-seasonal heat storage system aimed at achieving low-carbon heating. The simulation analyzes heat distribution and temperature changes from the heat storage system to the heating terminal. The results indicate that although the solar collectors operate for 26.3% of the total heat storage and heating period, the cumulative heat stored is 45.4% higher than the total heating load. Heat transferred by the cross-seasonal heat storage system accounts for up to 61.2% of the total heating load. Therefore, the system reduces fuel consumption by 77.6% compared to conventional fossil fuel heating systems. Moreover, radiant floor heating terminals, with a wide range of operating temperatures, match well with cascaded phase change heat storage and can reduce operation time by 19.5% and heat demand by 5.2% compared to conventional radiators. In addition to demonstrating the feasibility of applying cascaded phase change technology in cross-seasonal heat storage heating, this study reveals the lifecycle sustainability due to the shortened heat storage period. The configuration, parameters, and simulation results provide a reference basis for system application and design.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Numerous studies have highlighted a close link between metabolic imbalances and Alzheimer's Disease (AD). The advancement of metabolomics has recently enabled the exploration of characteristic metabolic changes associated with AD. Studies indicate that serum glutamate (Glu) levels may correlate with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD. This study aims to further elucidate the characteristics of baseline serum Glu levels in MCI and AD. METHODS: This study included 783 participants from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative-1 (ADNI-1) cohort, categorized into cognitively normal (CN, n = 224), stable MCI (sMCI, n = 181), progressive MCI (pMCI, n = 193), and AD (n = 185). The study aimed to analyze the diagnostic value of baseline serum Glu, to explore its predictive capability for the progression from CN to MCI or AD, and from MCI to AD, and to analyze the relationship between serum Glu and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers and cognitive functions in different diagnostic groups. RESULTS: Compared to the CN and sMCI groups, the pMCI group showed significantly lower levels of serum Glu, and the AD group also had lower Glu levels compared to the sMCI group. However, serum Glu did not show significant diagnostic value for MCI and AD. Lower levels of serum Glu could predict the progression from MCI to AD. CONCLUSION: Serum Glu levels can predict the progression from MCI to AD, suggesting that it could provide new insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms of AD. However, serum Glu may not be an ideal peripheral biomarker for AD.

RESUMEN

Metabolic syndrome has become a significant public health concern. This study aims to investigate the impact of dietary patterns on metabolic syndrome in young adults and how physical activity modulates this effect. A cross-sectional study was conducted at a health management center in Tianjin, China, from September 2022 to March 2023. Participants aged 18-35 years were recruited using convenience sampling. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Logistic regression models evaluated associations between these patterns and metabolic syndrome, adjusting for potential confounders. Among 442 participants, four dietary patterns were identified: Legume-Nut, Alcohol-Meat, Sugar-Processed, and Egg-Vegetable. The Legume-Nut dietary pattern was associated with a higher risk of metabolic syndrome (OR = 2.63, 95% CI: 1.08-6.37), while the Egg-Vegetable dietary pattern was associated with a lower risk (OR = 0.26, 95% CI: 0.10-0.70). No significant associations were found for the Sugar-Processed and Alcohol-Meat patterns. Subgroup analysis revealed that the Legume-Nut pattern increased the risk of metabolic syndrome among those with irregular physical activity, whereas the Egg-Vegetable pattern decreased the risk. These findings highlight the significant influence of dietary patterns on the risk of metabolic syndrome in young adults and the modifying effect of regular physical activity, underscoring the need for targeted dietary and lifestyle interventions to prevent metabolic syndrome in this population.

RESUMEN

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the value of a CT-enhanced scanning radiomics nomogram in distinguishing between early hepatic abscess (EHA) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) and to validate its diagnostic efficacy. Materials and Methods: Clinical and imaging data on 112 patients diagnosed with EHA and ICC who underwent double-phase CT-enhanced scanning at our hospital were collected. The contours of the lesions were delineated layer by layer across the three phases of CT scanning and enhancement using 3D Slicer software to define the region of interest (ROI). Subsequently, the contours were merged into 3D models, and radiomics features were extracted using the Radiomics plug-in. The data were randomly divided into training (n = 78) and validation (n = 34) cohorts at a 7:3 ratio, using the R programming language. Standardization was performed using the Z-score method, and LASSO regression was used to select the best λ-value for screening variables, which were then used to establish prediction models. The rad-score was calculated using the best radiomics model, and a joint model was constructed based on the rad-score and clinical scores. A nomogram was developed based on the joint model. The diagnostic efficacy of the models for distinguishing ICC and EHA was assessed using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and area under the curve (AUC) analyses. Calibration curves were used to evaluate the reliability and accuracy of the nomograms, while decision curves and clinical impact curves were utilized to assess their clinical value. Results: Compared with the ICC group, significant differences were observed in clinical data and imaging characteristics in the EHA group, including age, centripetal enhancement, hepatic pericardial depression sign, arterial perfusion abnormality, arterial CT value, and arteriovenous enhancement (p < 0.05). Logistic regression analysis identified centripetal enhancement, hepatic pericardial depression sign, arterial perfusion abnormality, arterial CT value, and arteriovenous enhancement as independent influencing factors. Three, five, and four radiomics features were retained in the scanning, arterial, and venous phases, respectively. Single-phase models were constructed, with the radiomics model from the arterial phase demonstrating the best diagnostic efficacy. The rad-score was calculated using the arterial-phase radiomics model, and nomograms were drawn in conjunction with the clinical model. The nomogram based on the combined model exhibited the highest differential diagnostic efficacy between EHA and ICC (training cohort: AUC of 0.972; validation cohort: AUC of 0.868). The calibration curves indicated good agreement between the predicted and pathological results, while decision curves and clinical impact curves demonstrated higher clinical utility of the nomograms. Conclusion: The CT-enhanced scanning radiomics nomogram demonstrates high clinical value in distinguishing between EHA and ICC, thereby enhancing the accuracy of preoperative diagnosis.
