RESUMEN

Paraphlomisqingyuanensis and P.baiwanensis (Lamiaceae), two new species from the limestone area in Guangdong Province, China, are described. Morphologically, both species belong to P.ser.Subcoriaceae C.Y. Wu & H.W. Li. A close relationship between the two new and P.subcoriacea was revealed by molecular phylogenetic analyses based on ETS and ITS. Further morphological and population genetic evidence indicated that they are distinct species in Paraphlomis. According to the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria, P.qingyuanensis and P.baiwanensis were assessed as Endangered (EN) and Deficient (DD), respectively.

RESUMEN

In this paper, a novel, to the best of our knowledge, polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on an asymmetrical directional coupler (DC) was proposed, which consists of a strip waveguide (WG) and a ${{\rm Si}_3}{{\rm N}_4}$Si3N4 loaded horizontal slot WG. By carefully adjusting the geometric parameters of the DC, the phase match condition between these two WGs can be satisfied for the transverse magnetic (TM) polarization, while the coupling efficiency of the transverse electric (TE) polarization is frustrated due to the large phase mismatch. The extra optimizing designs include adding filters to the output ports as well as introducing the tapered structure into the DC, which is settled by the particle swarm optimizing (PSO) algorithm so that the performance of the proposed PBS is improved over a broadband range. Numerical simulations show that the bandwidths for the extinction ratio (ER) $ \gt {20}\;{\rm dB}$>20dB, 30 dB, and 40 dB are 160 nm, 95 nm, and 50 nm, respectively, with insertion loss (IL) $ \lt {1}\;{\rm dB}$<1dB for the wavelength of 1.49-1.58 µm. The analysis of the deviations demonstrates that the proposed PBS allows high fabrication tolerances.

RESUMEN

Development of the waveguide grating antenna with high directionality is significantly important for the optical phased array. A Si3N4/Si dual-layer structure with the grating pattern on the Si3N4 layer is proposed to improve the directionality of the waveguide grating antenna. High directionality of more than 89% can be achieved, and the length of the waveguide grating antenna is longer than 4 mm.

RESUMEN

The two-photon photochemistry of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) has been systematically studied. We find that upon intense irradiation CdSe quantum dots that absorb two or more visible photons undergo photodarkening. The quantum yield for this process is on the order of 6% in chloroform and much smaller in nonpolar solvents, such as octane. An analysis of the energetics indicates that, following two-photon excitation, the biexciton undergoes an Auger process producing a hot hole. This hot hole is ejected to a surface-bound TOP ligand, forming a QD(-)/TOP(+) contact ion pair that separates in chloroform, but not in octane. The charged and deligated QD is dark, resulting in the overall photodarkening. This photodarkening reaction may or may not be reversible, depending on what other chemical components are in the irradiated solution. The quantum dot concentration dependence and PL decay kinetics indicate that charge recombination occurs rapidly, followed by ligand reattachment and reorganization on a longer (tens of minutes) time scale. The relation of this mechanism to one-photon photochemistry is also discussed.

RESUMEN

The lexA-imuB-dnaE2 gene cassette contributing to the TLS (translesion synthesis) polymerase activity and can easily cause mutation after DNA damage in many bacteria. But it was previously thought that TLS polymerase activity was unlikely to exist in the radio-resistant genus Deinococcus. In our preliminary studies, the lexA-imuB-dnaE2 gene cassette was found in a newly isolated feather-degrading Deinococcus ficus. Here we have attempted to determine the imuB gene sequence from another Deinococcus species namely D. grandis, by using the newly designed primers. The destroying of either imuB or dnaE2 gene in D. ficus leads to the increase in UV sensitivity and decrease in UV-induced mutations, which demonstrated the existence of TLS polymerase activity in D. ficus. In the presence of lexA-imuB-dnaE2, it is possible to obtain mutants with various keratinolytic activities after UV exposure. The keratinolytic activity of mutant strain CC-ZG207 increased by approximately twofold during growth in liquid feather medium. In contrast, the mutant strain CC-ZG227 showed only half of the keratinolytic activity compared with the wild type strain. By utilizing SDS-PAGE and zymogram profile analysis, the change in the protease activity was observed. We have proposed that the superior mutants of D. ficus can be created under UV stress, which is mediated by the lexA-imuB-dnaE2 gene cassette.
