RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Algae extracts are utilized as biofertilizers instead of chemical ferti-lizers in agriculture. Further, algae are known to possess a high content of plant hormones, such as gibberellin, salicylic acid, abscisic acid, and brassinosteroids. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of this study was to increase the extraction yield and simulta-neously extract hormones required for plant growth from Sargassum swartzii using Magnetic recoverable ionic liquid (IL). METHODS: In this study, extraction was performed by acidic digestion with acetic acid and then alkaline digestion with potassium hydroxide. RESULTS: The results showed the ionic liquid effect in extraction yield by 266 percent. The extracted phytohormones were analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) methods. High levels of gibberellin, salicylic acid, abscisic acid, and brassinosteroids in improved algae extraction showed that seaweed extract could be used as environmentally friendly liquid bio-fertilizers to replace chemical fertilizers and could play a crucial role in organic farming for sustainable agriculture. Additionally, the recoverability of ionic liquid eight times with negligible leaching proved the introduced procedure to be cost-effective. CONCLUSION: The reported procedure for algae extraction improved by using an acidic/primary ionic liquid environment. This procedure is economical because of the simple reusability of ionic liquid due to its magnetic features.

RESUMEN

Copper-Cysteamine nanoparticles (Cu-Cy NPs) have emerged as promising radiosensitizers in cancer treatment. This study aims to investigate the combined therapeutic effect of these nanoparticles and cisplatin using a clinical linear accelerator to enhance the efficacy of chemoradiation therapy for cervical cancer. Following successful synthesis and characterization of Cu-Cy NPs, the cytotoxicity effect of these nanoparticles and cisplatin in various concentrations was evaluated on HeLa cancer cells, individually and in combination. Additionally, the radiobiological effects of these agents were investigated under a 6MV linear accelerator. At a concentration of 25 mg/L, Cu-Cy NPs displayed no significant cytotoxicity toward HeLa cancer cells. However, when combined with 2Gy X-ray irradiation at this concentration, the nanoparticles demonstrated a potent radiosensitizing effect. Notably, cell viability and migration rate in the combination group (Cu-Cy NPs + cisplatin + radiation) were significantly reduced compared to the radiation-alone group. Additionally, the combination treatment induced a significantly higher rate of apoptosis compared to the radiation-alone group. Overall, Cu-Cy NPs exhibited a significant dose-dependent synergistic enhancement of radiation efficacy when combined with cisplatin under X-ray exposure, and may provide a promising approach to improve the therapeutic effect of conventional radiation therapy.

RESUMEN

Seaweed, a diverse group of marine macroalgae, has emerged as a rich source of bioactive compounds with numerous health-promoting properties. Among these, phenolic compounds have garnered significant attention for their diverse therapeutic applications. This review examines the methodologies employed in the extraction and purification of phenolic compounds from seaweed, emphasizing their importance in unlocking the full potential of these oceanic treasures. The article provides a comprehensive overview of the structural diversity and biological activities of seaweed-derived phenolics, elucidating their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. Furthermore, it explores the impact of extraction techniques, including conventional methods and modern green technologies, on the yield and quality of phenolic extracts. The purification strategies for isolating specific phenolic compounds are also discussed, shedding light on the challenges and advancements in this field. Additionally, the review highlights the potential applications of seaweed-derived phenolics in various industries, such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and functional foods, underscoring the economic value of these compounds. Finally, future perspectives and research directions are proposed to encourage continued exploration of seaweed phenolics, fostering a deeper understanding of their therapeutic potential and promoting sustainable practices in the extraction and purification processes. This comprehensive review serves as a valuable resource for researchers, industry professionals, and policymakers interested in harnessing the untapped potential of phenolic compounds from seaweed for the betterment of human health and environmental sustainability.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In developing countries including Iran, there are limited data on diarrheagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) contamination in milk and unpasteurized buttermilks. This study aimed to determine the occurrence of DEC pathotypes by culture and multiplex polymerase chain reaction (M-PCR) in some dairy products from southwest Iran. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this cross-sectional study (September to October 2021), 197 samples (87 unpasteurized buttermilk and 110 raw cow milk) were collected from dairy stores of Ahvaz, southwest Iran. The presumptive E. coli isolates were primarily identified using biochemical tests and then confirmed by PCR of uidA gene. The occurrence of 5 DEC pathotypes: enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC), and enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC) were investigated using M-PCR. Overall, 76 (76/197, 38.6%) presumptive E. coli isolates were identified by biochemical tests. Using uidA gene, only 50 isolates (50/76, 65.8%) were confirmed as E. coli. DEC pathotypes were detected in 27 of 50 (54.0%) E. coli isolates (74.1%, 20/27 from raw cow milk and 25.9%, 7/27 from unpasteurized buttermilk). The frequency of DEC pathotypes was as follows: 1 (3.7%) EAEC, 2 (7.4%) EHEC, 4 (14.8%) EPEC, 6 (22.2%) ETEC, and 14 (51.9%) EIEC. However, 23 (46.0%) E. coli isolates had only the uidA gene and were not considered DEC pathotypes. CONCLUSION: Possible health risks for Iranian consumers can be attributed to the presence of DEC pathotypes in dairy products. Hence, serious control and prevention efforts are needed to stop the spread of these pathogens.

RESUMEN

A superparamagnetic graphene oxide/Fe3O4/l-proline nano hybrid that was obtained from the non-covalent immobilization of l-proline on graphene oxide/Fe3O4 nanocomposite was used as a new magnetically separable catalyst for the efficient synthesis of 4,4'-(arylmethylene)bis(1H-pyrazol-5-ol) derivatives. The prepared heterogeneous catalyst was characterized using FTIR, TGA, DTG, XRD, TEM, SEM, and elemental analysis techniques. Short reaction times (5-15 min), excellent yields (87-98%), and simple experimental procedure with an easy work-up are some of the advantages of the introduced catalyst.

RESUMEN

In a straightforward and fast protocol, a mixture of 1,3-dimethylimidazolium fluoride ([DMIM]F) and 1-butylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Hbim]BF4) efficiently catalyzed the reaction of epoxides with ketene silyl acetals (KSA) to give various γ-lactones under metal-free conditions. Diverse kinds of the desired γ-lactones were directly prepared with high regioselectivities and yields in a simple one-pot procedure using [DMIM]F as Si-O bond activator and [Hbim]BF4 as solvent and acidic ionic liquid catalyst. The ionic liquid mixture was recovered and reused three times and no loss in its activity was observed.
