RESUMEN

The preparation of 1-(arylamino)methylbenzotriazoles 1a-17a and benzimidazoles 1b-17b is described and their antibacterial activity evaluated. 1-Hydroxymethylbenzazo-les react with the appropriate aniline to yield the target compounds. These were characterized using 1H NMR, IR, UV spectra. The compounds displayed no significant antibacterial activity.

RESUMEN

1. The high-resolution 1H NMR (MRS) spectra of human brain tumor homogenates revealed a broad resonance at 5.3-5.4 ppm in glioblastoma multiforme (N = 16) and brain metastases (N = 3). The broad resonance was identified as ceramide, a sphingosine-fatty acid combination portion of ganglioside, indicating an elevated abundance of monounsaturated fatty acids. GLC analysis of gangliosides in the highly malignant glioblastoma multiforme revealed that the elevated monounsaturated fatty acid is oleic acid (C18:1). The resonance at 5.3-5.4 ppm region was not detectable in normal human brain (N = 2), in meningiomas (N = 2), or in low-grade astrocytomas (N = 12). In normal human brain the abundance of monounsaturated fatty acid is minimal. 2. This investigation was made possible because the method of producing homogenate resulted in (i) no loss of lipids during the process and (ii) a well-homogenised sample, with (iii) no loss in chemical integrity. 3. The properties of tumor gangliosides include antigenic specificity and immunosuppressive activity and the ceramide, a sphingosine-fatty acid combination, noticeably influences the ganglioside immunosuppressive activity. 4. The observation of 1H NMR ceramide resonance in high-malignant brain tumors emphasizes the dramatic role of aberant gangliosides and ceramide precursors on the grade of malignancy and invasiveness. 5. Further insight into the specific nature of the ceramide portion of gangliosides in grading the malignancy of brain tumors should be investigated further.

RESUMEN

NMR spectroscopy was used to study carnosine and anserine metabolism in rat tissues under intensive muscle loading. Muscle loading was accompanied by the dipeptide (predominantly anserine) accumulation in muscle tissues. Preliminary per os administration of carnosine (250 mg/kg of body mass) did not increase the dipeptide content in muscle tissues but diminished the lactate content in rat muscles under intensive muscle loading.

RESUMEN

Nuclear magnetic resonance is a method which contributes nowadays to further investigations of the phosphate metabolism in red blood cells. By means of 31P nuclear magnetic resonance it is possible to record in intact red cells signals of phosphate compounds as well as changes in their concentrations. In the submitted work the authors followed up the important phosphate compounds in red cells--adenosine triphosphate, adenosine diphosphate and inorganic phosphate. They assessed and evaluated by statistical methods spectra of 10 healthy blood donors of different age and sex. The same procedure was used in 6 patients with hereditary spherocytosis, in 6 patients with G-6-PD deficiency and in 4 patients with pyruvate kinase deficiency. The most important changes were recorded in the latter pathological entity, the results being consistent with those obtained by other methods.

RESUMEN

The phosphate metabolism of the gastric wall after proximal selective vagotomy (PSV) was investigated by means of 31P-NMR spectroscopy. The destruction of metabolism has been found just after PSV resulting in a significant decrease of adenosine diphosphates and adenosine triphosphates. 4 and 7 days after PSV the progress of metabolism regeneration was detected, nevertheless with the retardation of high energy phosphates ischemic degradation. The results indicate not only a hydrochloric acid activity reduction but diminution of gastric mucosa protective factors, too. In experimental gastric ulcers no energy phosphates have been found suggesting a mucosa cells necrobiosis.
