RESUMEN

There was evaluation of effects of biotin administration on oviductal abundance of transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) and carbonic anhydrase (CA) mRNA transcript in younger and older broiler hens of relatively lesser and greater fertility lines. Additionally, effects of biotin supplementation on attenuation of age-related subfertility were evaluated. Hens from the relatively greater (Line D, n = 60) and lesser (Line B, n = 60) fertility rate line were randomly assigned to three treatment groups. Biotin was not or was administered in drinking water from 30 to 33 (younger age) and 53 to 56 (older age) wk of age to have access to no biotin (T0), or 0.3 (T1), or 0.45 (T2) mg/L of biotin. There was assessment the relative oviductal abundances of TGF-ß and CA mRNA transcript abundances. Supplemental biotin and age had no effect on the relative abundance of oviductal TGF-ß mRNA transcript in hens of Line D. There, however, was a ten-fold greater abundance of TGF-ß in hens of the T0 group of Line B compared with Line D. Relative abundance of TGF-ß mRNA transcript was greater in younger hens of Line B; however, biotin supplementation of older hens of the T2 group of Line B resulted in a similar TGF-ß abundance to that of younger hens. Inconstant with the TGF-ß abundance, CA abundance in hens of Line B was not affected by supplemental biotin or bird age. Overall, differences in TGF-ß or CA abundances did not affect fertility of broiler hens.

RESUMEN

Catalysts possessing sufficient activity to achieve intermolecular alkene hydroaminations under mild conditions are rare, and this likely accounts for the scarcity of asymmetric variants of this reaction. Herein, highly diastereoselective hydroaminations of allylic amines utilizing hydroxylamines as reagents and formaldehyde as catalyst are reported. This catalyst induces temporary intramolecularity, which results in high rate accelerations, and high diastereocontrol with either chiral allylic amines or chiral hydroxylamines. The reaction scope includes internal alkenes. Overall this work provides a new, stereocontrolled route to form complex vicinal diamines.

RESUMEN

Enantioselective total synthesis of muamvatin was achieved by ring-chain tautomerization of an acyclic derivative assembled by sequential substrate-controlled stereoselective aldol reactions of a chiral ketone with two achiral aldehydes. Although the trioxaadamantane tautomer was shown to be thermodynamically more stable than alternative forms, the kinetic barrier to cyclization was significant. This observation raises doubts about the proposed formation of muamvatin as an artifact of isolation.

RESUMEN

Oxyspiruriasis caused by the bird eyeworm, Oxyspirura mansoni, a thelaziid nematode, in three species of pheasants, 3 Chrysolophus pictus (golden pheasant), 7 Lophura nycthemera (silver pheasant) and 9 Phasianus colchicus (common pheasant) in Zoo Negara Malaysia are reported. Birds with the disease were treated with a solution of 0.5% iodine or 0.5% lysol. Antistress powder for 4 days in water and non-strep vitamin powder in water was also provided. Control measures included removal of the cockroach intermediate host, Pycnoscelus surinamensis (Surinam cockroach) from the vicinity of the birds. The golden pheasant is a new host for O. mansoni in peninsular Malaysia.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: End-stage liver diseases are common in Iran. The only therapeutic option for these patients is liver transplantation. OBJECTIVE: To present our 2-year experience of liver transplantations in Afzalipoor Hospital, Kerman, southeastern Iran. METHODS: From November 2009 to September 2011, 12 patients underwent orthotopic liver transplantation in our center. Their data including demographics, indications for transplantation, MELD scores, post-operative complications and their management were collected. RESULTS: Patients (7 women and 5 men) aged between 14 and 55 years. Indications for the transplantation included HBV infection (n=5), cryptogenic cirrhosis (n=2), Wilson's disease, alcoholism (n=1), HCV infection (n=1), Budd-Chiari syndrome (n=1), and autoimmune hepatitis (n=1). MELD score of patients ranged from 16 to 30. All patients received tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetile and corticosteroid, postoperatively. 2 patients died of pulmonary and intra-abdominal infections with resultant to multiple organ failure. Nonfunctioning of transplanted liver and ongoing bleeding resulted in death in another patients. 9 patients are well doing and have excellent liver functions. CONCLUSION: We had relatively successful results in our experience of orthotopic liver transplantation. Vicinity of our center to Shiraz Transplant Center would be an important factor in this success.

RESUMEN

The stereoselectivity of aldol reactions of chiral reactants can be factorized into to three stereocontrol elements: the diastereoface selectivities of the ketone enol(ate) and aldehyde and the relative topicity of the coupling. Application of the multiplicativity rule to these elements leads to the prediction that kinetic resolution (KR) should be possible if all three stereocontrol elements are strongly biased. As a corollary, the enantioselectivity of the kinetic resolution should be switchable by a change in the sense of selectivity of any of the stereocontrol elements. This hypothesis was tested using aldehyde and ketone reactants with high diastereoface selectivities and developing reaction conditions that strongly favor either syn or anti relative topicity. The aldehyde 2 undergoes aldol reactions with near-exclusive Felkin diastereoface selectivity, and hydroxy-protected derivatives of ketone 1 (R = MOM, Et(3)Si, or Ac) undergo aldol reactions with high diastereoface selectivity to give 3,5-trans adducts. High levels of anti and syn relative topicity were obtained with dicyclohexylboron enolates and Ti(O(i)Pr)(4)Li "ate" enolates, respectively. Using these enolates, aldol reactions of (+/-)-2 with (+/-)-1 gave two of the eight possible diastereomeric adducts (3 from a diastereoselective like combination of reactant enantiomers and 4 from a diastereoselective unlike combination) predominantly (>95% of the adducts) in ratios of 0.05-20:1; boron enolates favored the like reaction (3:4, 15-20:1) and Ti "ate" enolates favored the unlike reaction (3:4, 1:10-20). Under these conditions, the ratio of like and unlike products is a measure of the mutual kinetic enantioselection (MKE) and reflects the ratio of the rate constants for the competing like and unlike reactions. For each of the four diastereomers of 1, the reactions with the highest MKEs in favor of the like (3) or unlike products (4) were repeated using highly enantioenriched ketone. These reactions occurred with the expected KR (s = 10-20) allowing selective access to enantioenriched diastereomers of 3 or 4 from (+/-)-2. These adducts are useful for polypropionate synthesis, and this design strategy for KR should be applicable to related processes.

RESUMEN

A sensitive and simple solid phase extraction method for the simultaneous determination of trace and toxic metals in food samples has been reported. The method is based on the adsorption of zinc, nickel, iron and lead on sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-coated alumina, which is also chelated with bis (2-hydroxyacetophenone)-1, 3-propanediimine (BHAPN). The retained analyte ions on modified solid phase were eluted using 8 mL of 4 mol L(-1) HNO(3). The analyte determinations were carried out by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The influences of some metal ions and anions on the recoveries of understudy analyte ions were investigated. The proposed method has been successfully applied for the evaluation of these trace and toxic metals in some traditional food samples from Iran.

RESUMEN

The provision and maintenance of prostheses in 100 trans-femoral amputees and 73 trans-tibial amputees were retrospectively analysed over a 10-year period. The aim of the study was to analyse the prosthetic episodes, i.e., the need for maintenance, repairs and replacements to a trans-femoral and a trans-tibial prosthesis and frequency of new sockets prescribed over the same period of use by established adult amputees. The study showed that the trans-femoral amputees needed 0.96 new prostheses, 3.27 new sockets, 2.31 major repairs, 3.36 component changes and 21.85 minor repairs. Younger trans-femoral amputees aged less than 60 years needed 1.1 new prostheses, 3.15 new sockets, 2.06 major repairs, 4.23 component changes and 20.49 minor repairs. Younger trans-femoral amputees needed significantly more changes of prosthetic components (p = 0.04). The associated study on 73 trans-tibial amputees showed that they needed 1.4 new prosthesis, 2.9 new sockets, 3.2 major repairs and 14.1 minor repairs over the same 10-year period. The introduction and prescription of modular prosthesis as opposed to conventional limbs used earlier has possibly allowed components to be easily replaced thus reducing the need to replace a whole new prosthesis.

RESUMEN

We investigated the immunogenicity of recombinant rMSP1 (rPbMSP1) that was generated from Plasmodium berghei. The rPbMSP1 formulated in alum was found to be immunogenic which induced high levels of specific anti-rPbMSP1 antibody. The IgG2a response predominated over IgG1 during the challenge infection in the vaccinated mice. Mice vaccinated with rPbMSP1 in alum mounted significant protective immunity against challenge infection (P < 0.01). On day 121 after the booster, three out of ten mice immunized with rPbMSP1 in PBS survived parasite infection (P < 0.05) and eight out of ten mice vaccinated with r MSP1 in alum did (P < 0.01). Hence, immunization with MSP1 in alum obviously has conferred protective effects, which prevented death from P. berghei lethal infection in mice (P < 0.01). These observations provide an excellent model for clinical assessment of this formulation in human subjects.

RESUMEN

Tribulus terrestris has been used in traditional medicine for relieving rheumatic pain and as an analgesic plant for a long time. In this investigation the analgesic effect of methanolic extract of this plant on male albino mice was evaluated by formalin and tail flick test. Extraction of the fruits of the plant was done by two different methods (suxheletion and percolation) with methanol 80%. The percolated extract was injected intraperitoneally in mice at 50, 100, 200, 400, and 800 mg/kg. The results showed that a dose of 100 mg/kg of percolated extract had the highest significant analgesic effect compared to the control group (P < 0.01) in formalin and tail flick test. There is no significant difference in the analgesic effect of suxheleted and percolated extract. The analgesic effect of the extract was lower than morphine, 2.5 mg/kg in both tests, and higher than ASA 300 mg/kg in chronic phase of pain in formalin test (P < 0.05). Pretreatment of animal with naloxone did not change the analgesia induced by the plant extract in both tests, therefore the involvement of opioid receptor in the analgesic effect of this plant was excluded. The results of ulcerogenic studies indicate that the gastric ulcerogenecity of plant extract is lower than the indomethacin in the rat's stomach. It can therefore be concluded that T. terrestris extract has a suitable analgesic effect and further studies are required to produce a more effective product of this plant to substitute for conventional analgesic drugs.

RESUMEN

The interactions between bilirubin and human serum albumin (HSA) were studied by isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and UV-vis spectrophotometry at 27 degrees C in 100 mM phosphate buffer pH 7.4 containing 1 mM EDTA. The biphasic shape of the HSA-bilirubin binding curve depicted the existence of two bilirubin binding sets on the HSA structure which had distinct binding interactions. Each binding set contained one or more bilirubin binding site. The first binding set at subdomain IIA included one binding site and had a more hydrophobic microenvironment than the other two binding sites in the second bilirubin binding set (subdomain IIIA). With our method of analysis, the calculated dissociation constant of the first binding site is 1.28 x 10(-6) M and 4.80 x 10(-4) M for the second and third binding sites. Here, the typical Boltzmann's equation was used with a new approach to calculate the dissociation constants as well as the standard free energy changes for the HSA-bilirubin interactions. Interestingly, our calculations obtained using the Wyman binding potential theory confirmed that our analysis method had been correct (especially for the second binding phase). The molar extinction coefficient determined for the first bound bilirubin molecule depicted that the bilirubin molecules (in low concentrations) should interact with the nonpolar microenvironment of the first high affinity binding site. Binding of the bilirubin molecules to the first binding site was endothermic (deltaH > 0) and occurred through the large increase in the binding entropy established when the hydrophobic bilirubin molecules escaped from their surrounding polar water molecules and into the hydrophobic medium of the first binding site. On the other hand, the calculated molar extinction coefficient illustrated that the microenvironment of the second binding set (especially for the third binding site) was less hydrophobic than the first one but still more hydrophobic than the buffer medium. The binding of the third bilirubin molecule to the HSA molecule was established more through exothermic (electrostatic) interactions.

RESUMEN

Recent reports have suggested an increased prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with rosacea, with some evidence of dermatological improvement in patients treated with antibiotics for this infection. Our study investigates the prevalence of H. pylori infection in rosacea patients in Kerman. Serological examination was done for 29 patients with classical identification of rosacea using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay IgG antibody method. Comparison of antibody titres with those of a control group revealed that the prevalence of positive serological tests for H. pylori was significantly higher in the test group. This supports the suggestion of some form of relationship between rosacea and H. pylori infection, though further investigations with larger sample sizes are required for a definite conclusion.

RESUMEN

The filaria vector competence of Anopheles stephensi was compared with Brugia-susceptible Aedes aegypti Liverpool strain, An. gambiae Badagry Lagos strain and An. dirus Perlis Malaysia strain. An. stephensi ingested more Brugia pahangi microfilariae, had the highest infectivity rate and yielded more infective mosquitoes than the other two anopheline species. The overall vector competence of An. stephensi was 0.13 times that of Ae. aegypti, 0.62 times that of An. gambiae and 2.17 times that of An. dirus. However, heavy mortality among infected An. stephensi in the present investigation indicates that the filaria vectorial capacity of the mosquito might be limited epidemiologically. The relationship between filaria vector competence and mosquito foregut armature is discussed. It was observed that the relative vector competence of the three anopheline species tested was in the same order as their relative degrees of armature elaboration. The converse would be expected if foregut armatures really give partial protection to the mosquitoes against filarial infection. It is suggested that high host microfilariae density favours larval survival proportional to the degree of armature development in Anopheles (Cellia) species.

RESUMEN

In Armigeres subalbatus, 60% and 3% of the ingested Brugia pahangi microfilariae (mf) respectively migrated into the haemocoel and the thorax within 5 minutes post ingestion (p.i.). Most of the mf had migrated from the gut into the haemocoel within the first 10 minutes p.i. There was no correlation between the number of mf ingested and the migration rate though those in mosquitoes with a low mf burden tend to migrate earlier. At 24 hours p.i., 5-30% of the mf were still in the gut; 19% of these mf were immobile. At 48 hours p.i. only 2% of the mf were mobile. B. pahangi mf isolated from blood meals at 24 hours p.i., failed to develop when inoculated into Armigeres subalbatus. 54% and 73% of the mf isolated from a 24 hour old clotted blood of a B. pahangi-infected cat and fresh peripheral cat blood respectively developed into stage-1 larva. Probably mf left in the midgut at 24 hours p.i. are the young and immature worms and are physiologically incapable of penetrating the gut.

RESUMEN

Toxic epidermal necrolysis is a rare, severe drug-induced disorder characterized by extensive epidermal loss. This study used the data of a national survey looking for all cases which occurred during a five-year period. The incidence of toxic epidermal necrolysis (cases/million/year) was 2.7 times higher among elderly than among younger adults. In the elderly population no female preponderance was found but clinical patterns were similar. The fatality of toxic epidermal necrolysis was twice as high in the elderly patients (51%) as in the younger (25%). The drugs incriminated in most cases of toxic epidermal necrolysis were the same in both groups (NSAIDs, antibacterials and anticonvulsants).

RESUMEN

The frequency tuning and stabilization of a novel long-pulse seeded Nd:YAG laser is described. The laser frequency was stabilized to +/-8 MHz by locking it to an iodine absorption. A Doppler-free experiment shows the laser linewidth to be in good agreement with the Fourier transform limit of 10 MHz. Molecular hyperfine frequencies and parameters were determined for three I(2) absorption lines. The use of this laser as a pump and a cw probe amplifier for coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy is illustrated by a scan of the 2v(2)Q-branch transition in CO(2), and the instrumental resolution is found to be 43 +/- 15 MHz.

RESUMEN

Two in vitro tests were used to investigate the effect of Onchocerca lienalis Stiles infection on the haemolymph of Simulium ornatum Meigen. The first of these examined the effect of infected haemolymph on the motility of fresh O. lienalis or Brugia pahangi Buckley & Edeson microfilariae. Incubation of haemolymph from individual flies with fresh microfilariae was performed in the wells of Terasaki micro-tissue culture plates. Motility of both species of parasite was found to be significantly attenuated when compared to worms incubated in control haemolymph groups. The second assay was that of agglutination of cat erythrocytes in the presence of haemolymph from individual flies, also performed in Terasaki plates. This test demonstrated significant increases in the rates of haemagglutination in the haemolymph of O. lienalis infected blackflies. The titre appeared to increase during the initial 5 days of infection up to a level of 1/32+, but then fell between day 5 and 7 to a maximum level of 1/2. The proportion of flies exhibiting haemagglutination also rose following infection. Despite the apparent absence of melanization and encapsulation, simuliids may have at least two humoral haemolymph components available to them for parasite regulation; a fast-acting factor responsible for rapid parasite death, and more specific agglutinins, possibly lectins. The role of the latter in defence is as yet unclear.

RESUMEN

During the last few years considerable attention has been given to the use of gait analysis as a tool for clinical use. The instrumentation for measurement of the kinetics and kinematics of human locomotion was originally designed for research use. Extension of its use into the clinical field calls for simplified methodology and clearly defined protocols with precise identification of the relevant parameters for the analysis. Force platforms, TV-computer and pylon transducer systems were used for collection of kinetic and kinematic data of five normal subjects, 10 below-knee, 10 above-knee and one hip disarticulation amputee. The repeatability tests showed significant differences in the measured parameters. These variations are attributed to the methodology of the analysis and the step to step variation of the subjects' gait. Differences in the degree of step to step variation between various amputee and normal subjects are quantified. In this presentation the capability of present day systems to perform repeatable gait measurements is discussed. A computational method for determination of representative measurements for the purposes of biomechanical evaluation and comparison as well as quantification of the degree of repeatability is described.
