RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Stroke care partners and caregivers experience emotional and physical burden, and 80% of stroke patients need support after discharge. This study examines the relationship between caregiver preparedness and altruism levels of stroke patients. METHODS: The population of this descriptive and correlational study consisted of the caregivers of stroke patients who were hospitalized at the stroke center of a hospital between January 2021 and August 2021. The sample was determined as 240 with the known sampling formula. The descriptive information form, the Preparedness for Caregiving Scale, and the Altruism Scale were used to collect the study data. RESULTS: The total mean score of the caregivers' preparedness to provide care was found to be 25.04 (7.36), and the mean total altruism score was 85.78 (9.20). The mean score of Donation, which is one of the subdimensions of the Altruism Scale, was 26.67 (4.08), and that of Helping Status was 59.10 (6.92). No statistically significant relationships were detected between caregivers' preparedness to provide care scores, Helping Status scores, Donation scores, and total altruism scores in this study ( P = .241, P = .245, and P = .129, respectively). CONCLUSION: No statistically significant relationships were detected between the preparedness and altruism levels of the caregivers of the stroke patients in this study.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an inflammatory and demyelinating disorder of the central nervous system. The patients with MS have some difficulties in physical, social, and psychological functions. This study was carried out to determine the relationship between the adaptation levels of patients with MS to the disease and their self-care agency levels. METHODS: This study used a descriptive design and was carried out in a university hospital's neurology clinic and outpatient clinic between July 2019 and March 2020. The sample size was determined as 258 using the known universe sampling method. Data were collected using the "Adaptation to Chronic Illness Scale," the "Self-Care Agency Scale," and a "Patient Identification Form." Spearmen correlation analysis was used to evaluate the data. RESULTS: The mean age of the patients participating in the study was 41.36 (0.74) years, 74% of them had MS for more than 3 years, 58% had their last attack more than a year ago, and 27% had balance problems. The adaptation levels of patients to the disease (76.79 [0.57]) and their self-care agency (88.42 [1.34]) were slightly higher than the moderate level. A moderate-level, significant, and positive correlation was found between the adaptation level of the patients to the chronic illness and their self-care agency levels (r = 0.310, P = .000). CONCLUSION: It was concluded that there was a moderate-level, significant, and positive correlation between the patients' level of adaptation to MS disease and the level of their self-care agency. We recommend the provision of supportive professional training to patients with MS on their disease.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to examine the relationship between elective surgical patients' methods for coping with stress and sleeping status the night before an operation. DESIGN: This research was a descriptive and correlational study. METHODS: The study was conducted between November 2016 and February 2017 with 132 patients who were waiting to undergo elective surgery in the surgery clinics of a university hospital. The data were collected using a personal information form, the Richards-Campbell Sleep Questionnaire (RCSQ), and the Ways of Coping Inventory (WOC). FINDINGS: This study indicated that the mean RCSQ score of the male patients and patients who were hospitalized at a cardiology clinic and experienced no situation that interrupted sleep the night before the operation was higher, and the difference was statistically significant (P < .05). Patients obtained a mean score of 46.31 ± 32.21 on the RCSQ. A positive significant relationship was found between the mean scores of the self-confident approach, optimistic approach, and receiving social support, which are subscales of the WOC, and the total mean score on the RCSQ (P < .01). A negative significant relationship was found between the mean scores of the helpless approach and the submissive approach subscales of the WOC, and the total mean score on the RCSQ (P < .01). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study showed that the approaches that the patients waiting for elective surgery used to cope with stress affected their nocturnal sleep status.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to determine the care burden of caregivers of patients with multiple sclerosis in Turkey. This descriptive study was conducted with 92 caregivers. To collect data, information form and Zarit Caregiver Burden Interview (ZCBI) were used. Most of the caregivers (65.2%) were females and 71.7% of them were married. The average age of caregivers was 38 and above. The mean ZCBI score of caregivers was 25.44 ± 9.50. The ZCBI score was significantly higher in caregivers providing care for more than six years (28.09 ± 10.16). Additionally, the ZCBI score was significantly higher in caregivers providing care 3-4 hours per day (32.23 ± 8.37) and providing physical care (29.28 ± 5.18).

RESUMEN

This study aimed to adapt an English version of the survey tool Spiritual Care-Giving Scale for Turkish students and to evaluate its psychometric properties. Spiritual care is a central element of holistic nursing, but is not often made explicit in the theoretical and practical components of preregistration nursing programs. A composite scale will assist in identifying students' perceptions and issues to be addressed in curricula and practice settings in Turkey. The scale was composed of 35 items and five subscales. Cronbach's α reliability coefficient was .96, and item-total point correlations were between .37 and .77. In addition, split-half reliability coefficient was .88. The Spiritual Care-Giving Scale was found to be a valid and reliable instrument for measuring the multifaceted perspectives of spirituality and spiritual care in practice by students. Further testing of this scale is required with other student populations and clinicians.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to adapt the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) to family caregivers of inpatients in medical and surgical clinics to assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish version. The study design was descriptive and methodological. A total of 223 family caregivers providing care to patients for at least 1 week in clinics were selected through convenience sampling. Data were collected using the Turkish translation of the ZBI. The psychometric testing of the adapted instrument was carried out to establish internal consistency, interitem correlation, and construct validity. The content validity procedure resulted in a final scale comprising 18 items. Cronbach's alpha was .82. Factor analysis yielded one factor. The Turkish version of the ZBI adapted to the clinics can be used as a one-factor tool.
