RESUMEN

Zinc (Zn) is one of the essential mineral elements for both plants and humans. Zn deficiency in human is one of the major causes of hidden hunger, a serious health problem observed in many developing countries. Therefore, increasing Zn concentration in edible part is an important issue for improving human Zn nutrition. Here, we found that an Australian wild rice O. meridionalis showed higher grain Zn concentrations compared with cultivated and other wild rice species. The quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis was then performed to identify the genomic regions controlling grain Zn levels using backcross recombinant inbred lines derived from O. sativa 'Nipponbare' and O. meridionalis W1627. Four QTLs responsible for high grain Zn were detected on chromosomes 2, 9, and 10. The QTL on the chromosome 9 (named qGZn9), which showed the largest effect on grain Zn concentration was confirmed with the introgression line, which had a W1627 chromosomal segment covering the qGZn9 region in the genetic background of O. sativa 'Nipponbare'. Fine mapping of this QTL resulted in identification of two tightly linked loci, qGZn9a and qGZn9b. The candidate regions of qGZn9a and qGZn9b were estimated to be 190 and 950 kb, respectively. Furthermore, we also found that plants having a wild chromosomal segment covering qGZn9a, but not qGZn9b, is associated with fertility reduction. qGZn9b, therefore, provides a valuable allele for breeding rice with high Zn in the grains.

RESUMEN

Adenosarcoma of the uterus is a rare tumor containing benign glandular epithelial and malignant mesenchymal elements. Typical adenosarcoma is a low-grade tumor, presents as a large polypoid mass occupying the endometrial cavity, and may protrude into the vaginal cavity. The presence of small hyperintense cysts scattered within the mass on T(2)-weighted imaging, reflecting glandular epithelial components, and relatively low signal intensity on high b-value diffusion-weighted imaging, reflecting its low-grade nature, may be characteristic findings.

RESUMEN

We studied the therapeutic effects of one-year alendronate treatment in three cases (two males and one female) of osteoporosis with parietal thinning of skull. Plain radiography and three dimensional computed tomography revealed asymmetric external thinning of the posteromedial part of the bilateral parietal bones. Technetium-99m methylenediphosphate bone scintigraphy did not show any changes in these three cases. Pretreatment levels of urinary type I collagen cross-linked N-telopeptides (NTX) in all three cases were high compared to the normal range. Pretreatment levels of serum bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP) in the two male patients were high in contrast to the normal values in the female patient. Pretreatment mean bone mineral density (BMD) values of the 2nd to 4th lumbar vertebrae (L2-4BMD), head BMD, femoral neck BMD, and whole body BMD of all three patients were low compared with the respective normal ranges. One-year alendronate treatment decreased both urinary NTX and serum BAP in all three cases to normal values. Treatment also increased the whole body BMD in all three cases, the L2-4BMD of the female patient, the femoral neck BMD of the female patient and one male patient, and the head BMD of the female patient when compared to pretreatment levels.

RESUMEN

The endometrial cavity may demonstrate various imaging manifestations such as normal, reactive, inflammatory, and benign and malignant neoplasms. We evaluated usual and unusual magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of the uterine endometrial cavity, and described the diagnostic clues to differential diagnoses. Surgically proven pathologies of the uterine endometrial cavity were evaluated retrospectively with pathologic correlation. The pathologies included benign endometrial neoplasms such as endometrial hyperplasia and polyp, malignant endometrial neoplasms such as endometrial carcinoma and carcinosarcoma, endometrial-myometrial neoplasm such as endometrial stromal sarcoma, pregnancy-related lesions in the endometrial cavity such as gestational trophoblastic diseases (hydatidiform mole, invasive mole and choriocarcinoma) and placental polyp, myometrial lesions simulating endometrial lesions such as submucosal leiomyoma and some adenomyosis, endometrial neoplasms simulating myometrial lesions such as adenomyomatous polyp and endometrial lesions arising in the hemicavity of a septate/bicornate uterus, and fluid collections in the uterine cavity (hydro/hemato/pyometra). It is important to recognize various imaging findings in these diseases, in order to make a correct preoperative diagnosis.

RESUMEN

Ovarian cystadenofibroma is a benign tumor and may appear as a multilocular cystic mass with solid nodular components mimicking malignant ovarian tumor. Preoperative diagnosis is required to avoid excess surgical procedure. We report characteristic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of 2 cases with pathologic correlation. On T2-weighted images, the solid components of the tumors showed very low intensity, in which very high intense tiny cysts were present reflecting dense fibrous stromal proliferation with scattered small cystic glandular structures. This "black sponge"-like appearance was considered to be diagnostic.

RESUMEN

Two cases of localized pseudomyxoma peritonei in the female pelvic cavity associated with a ruptured appendiceal mucocele and ovarian involvement that mimicked ovarian carcinomatous peritonitis were evaluated. Subtle omental irregularity adjacent to the cecum may suggest the hidden appendiceal origin reflecting localized carcinomatous peritonitis caused by the occult rupture of the mucocele. Mucinous fluid-like materials were localized in the pelvic cavity with scalloping of the uterus, which may be the diagnostic finding of pseudomyxoma peritonei.
