Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting toxicant commonly used in the plastics industry, as a result, it is present in large quantities in the environment. Therefore, current study was designed to assess BPA induced neurotoxicity and molecular fate within common carp (Cyprinus carpio), largely used edible fish. Following 6 weeks exposure to BPA 1/5th of 96 h LC50 (1.31 mg/L), brain exhibited oxidative damage, which was evidenced by compromised antioxidant system (CAT, SOD, GSH) and increased level of biomacromolecule peroxidation (MDA and 8-OHDG). Functional damage to the brain observed in the form of blood-brain barrier disruption (decreased tight junction gene expression) and nerve conduction impairment (reduced acetylcholinesterase activity). Mechanistically, apoptotic cell death indicated by characteristic alteration in key biomarkers (bcl-2, caspase, and p53-related gene family). Whereas, coadministration of powdered PP (pomegranate peel) (8 %) with BPA effectively mitigated the BPA toxicity, as evidenced by the restoration of the above-mentioned bioindicators. Thereby, BPA-induced neurotoxicity could be potentially detoxified by applying PP dietary enrichment.

Lattice-oxygen is highly oxidizable, ideal for electrocatalytic C-H oxidation but insufficient alone for C(O)-C bond cleavage due to the non-removable nature of lattice sites. Here, we present a visible light-assisted electrochemical method of in-situ formulating removable lattice-oxygen sites in a nickel-oxyhydroxide (ESE-NiOOH) electrocatalyst. This catalyst efficiently converts aromatic alcohols and carbonyls with C(O)-C fragments from lignin and plastics into benzoic acids (BAs) with high yields (83-99%). Without light irradiation, ESE-NiOOH's intrinsic lattice-oxygen is non-removable and inert for C(O)-C bond cleavage. In-situ characterizations show light-induced lattice-oxygen removal and regeneration via OH- refilling. Theoretical calculations identify the nucleophilic oxygen attack on ketone-derived carbanion as a rate-determining step, which can be remarkably facilitated by removable lattice-oxygen to activate α-C-H bonds. As a proof-of-concept, an "electrochemical funnel" strategy is developed for high-efficiency upgrading aromatic mixtures with C(O)-C moieties into BA with up to 94% yield. This in-situ removal-regeneration approach for lattice sites opens an avenue for the tailored design of interfacial electrocatalysts to selectively upcycle waste carbon sources into valuable products.

To develop and assess an automated Sub-arc Collimator Angle Optimization (SACAO) algorithm and Cumulative Blocking Index Ratio (CBIR) metrics for single-isocenter coplanar volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) to treat multiple brain metastases. This study included 31 patients with multiple brain metastases, each having 2 to 8 targets. Initially, for each control point, the MLC blocking index was calculated at different collimator angles, resulting in a two-dimensional heatmap. Optimal sub-arc segmentation and collimator angle optimization were achieved using an interval dynamic programming algorithm. Subsequently, VMAT plans were designed using two approaches: SACAO and the conventional Full-Arc Fixed Collimator Angle. CBIR was calculated as the ratio of the cumulative blocking index between the two plan approaches. Finally, dosimetric and planning parameters of both plans were compared. Normal brain tissue, brainstem, and eyes received better protection in the SACAO group (P < 0.05).Query Notable reductions in the SACAO group included 11.47% in gradient index (GI), 15.03% in monitor units (MU), 15.73% in mean control point Jaw area (AJaw,mean), and 19.14% in mean control point Jaw-X width (WJaw-X,mean), all statistically significant (P < 0.001). Furthermore, CBIR showed a strong negative correlation with the degree of plan improvement. The SACAO method enhanced protection of normal organs while improving transmission efficiency and optimization performance of VMAT. In particular, the CBIR metrics show promise in quantifying the differences specifically in the 'island blocking problem' between SACAO and conventional VMAT, and in guiding the enhanced application of the SACAO algorithm.

AIMS: Benefits of mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists (MRAs) in heart failure with preserved and mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFpEF/HFmrEF) have not been established. Conventional randomized controlled trials are complex and expensive. The Spironolactone Initiation Registry Randomized Interventional Trial in Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction (SPIRRIT-HFpEF) is a unique pragmatic registry-based randomized controlled trial. METHODS: SPIRRIT-HFpEF is a multicentre, prospective, randomized, open-label, blinded endpoint trial conducted on platforms in the Swedish Heart Failure Registry (SwedeHF) and the United States (US) Trial Innovation Network. Patients with HFpEF/HFmrEF are randomized 1:1 to spironolactone (or eplerenone) in addition to usual care, versus usual care alone. The primary outcome is total number of cardiovascular deaths and hospitalizations for heart failure. Outcomes are collected from Swedish administrative complete coverage registries and a US call centre and subsequently adjudicated. Simple eligibility criteria were based on data available in SwedeHF: heart failure as outpatient or at discharge from hospital, left ventricular ejection fraction ≥40%, N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide >300 ng/L (in sinus rhythm) or >750 ng/L (in atrial fibrillation), with pre-specified adjustment for elevated body mass index, and chronic loop diuretic use. Power and sample size assessments were based on an event-driven design allowing enrolment over approximately 6 years, and application of hazard ratios from the TOPCAT trial, Americas subset. The final sample size is expected to be approximately 2400 patients. CONCLUSION: SPIRRIT-HFpEF will be informative on the effectiveness of generic MRAs in HFpEF and HFmrEF, and on the feasibility of conducting pragmatic and registry-based trials in heart failure and other chronic conditions.

PURPOSE: Investigating the effects of unequal sub-arc personalized collimator angle selection on the quality of Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT) plans for treating multiple brain metastases. METHODS: This study included 21 patients, each with 2-4 target volumes of multiple brain metastases. Two stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) approaches were utilized: sub-arc collimator VMAT (SAC-VMAT) and fixed collimator VMAT (FC-VMAT). In the SAC-VMAT group, multi-leaf collimators (MLC) shaped the target area, dividing the full arc into four unequal sub-arcs under the beam's eye view (BEV). Each sub-arc had an appropriate collimator angle selected to mitigate 'island blocking problems'. Conversely, the FC-VMAT group used a fixed collimator angle of 15° or 345°. A comparative analysis of the dosimetric parameters of the target volumes and normal tissues, along with the monitor units (MU), was conducted between the two groups. RESULTS: The mean dose and dose-volume to normal brain tissue (2-26 Gy, with a step of 2 Gy) were significantly lower in the SAC-VMAT group (P < 0.01). There was no statistical difference between the two groups in dose to the target volumes, conformity index (CI), homogeneity index (HI), and other normal tissues (P > 0.05). Compared with the FA-VMAT group, the SAC-VMAT group significantly reduced the gradient index (GI) (4.5 ± 0.59 vs 5.2 ± 0.75, P < 0.001) and MU (1774.33 ± 181.77 vs 2001.0 ± 344.86, P < 0.001). Notably, with an increase in the number of PTV, the SAC-VMAT group demonstrated more significant improvements in the dose-volume of normal brain tissue, GI, and MU. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, personalized selection of the unequal sub-arc collimator angle ensured the prescribed dose to the PTV, CI, and HI, while significantly reducing the GI, MU, and the dose to normal brain tissue in the VMAT plan for multi-target brain metastases in the cohort of cases with 2-4 target volumes. Particularly as the number of targets increase, the advantages of this method become more pronounced.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the clinical significance of the easy albumin-bilirubin (EZ-ALBI) score as a prognostic indicator in postoperative patients with gallbladder carcinoma (GBC). METHODS: The comprehensive clinical and pathological records of 140 patients with GBC who underwent radical resection between January 2015 and December 2020 were retrospectively examined. Based on the EZ-ALBI score, the 140 GBC patients were categorized into two groups: a low EZ-ALBI score group (score ≤ -34.4) consisting of 108 patients and a high EZ-ALBI score group (score > -34.4) consisting of 32 patients. The association between the EZ-ALBI score and clinicopathological factors was assessed. Survival analysis was performed using the Kaplan-Meier method, and the Cox proportional hazard model was utilized to evaluate the impact of clinicopathological factors on prognosis. RESULTS: Significant differences were observed between the low EZ-ALBI score group and the high EZ-ALBI score group in terms of serum total bilirubin, serum albumin, CA19-9 levels, liver metastasis, and tumor TNM stage. The 5-year survival rate was significantly lower in the high EZ-ALBI score group compared to the low EZ-ALBI score group. Univariate analysis indicated that serum total bilirubin, lymph node metastasis, TNM stage, and EZ-ALBI score were closely related to overall survival (OS). Multivariate analysis identified TNM stage and EZ-ALBI score as independent prognostic factors for OS. CONCLUSIONS: The EZ-ALBI score is a significant independent prognostic factor for overall survival in GBC patient's post-radical resection, highlighting its potential utility in clinical prognosis and patient management.

Pronounced spatial disparities in heatwave trends are bound up with a diversity of atmospheric signals with complex variations, including different phases and wavenumbers. However, assessing their relationships quantitatively remains a challenging problem. Here, we use a network-searching approach to identify the strengths of heatwave-related atmospheric teleconnections (AT) with ERA5 reanalysis data. This way, we quantify the close links between heatwave intensity and AT in the Northern Hemisphere. Approximately half of the interannual variability of heatwaves is explained and nearly 80% of the zonally asymmetric trend signs are estimated correctly by the AT changes in the mid-latitudes. We also uncover that the likelihood of extremely hot summers has increased sharply by a factor of 4.5 after 2000 over areas with enhanced AT, but remained almost unchanged over the areas with attenuated AT. Furthermore, reproducing Eastern European heatwave trends among various models of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 largely depends on the simulated Eurasian AT changes, highlighting the potentially significant impact of AT shifts on the simulation and projection of heatwaves.

The influences of the tropical Indian and Atlantic oceans on the development of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), especially regarding super El Niño events, have been a subject of debate. In particular, several studies argue that these cross-basin influences may be mere statistical artifacts resulting from the high auto-correlation of ENSO. To clarify this issue, we conduct a series of perfect model hindcast experiments to untangle the individual and synergistic effects of the tropical Indian and Atlantic oceans. Our results clearly demonstrate that without these cross-basin effects, the Pacific warming would rarely reach super El Niño level. Specifically, the individual effect of the Indian Ocean efficiently enhances the development of super El Niño events. In contrast, the Atlantic's effect is initially limited because it fails to establish the Bjerknes feedback in the Pacific. However, when coupled with the Indian Ocean, the Atlantic's effect becomes more pronounced as it is amplified by the Bjerknes feedback established by the Indian Ocean.

Neonicotinoids, highly toxic to insects, are among the world's most used insecticides. However, their harmful effects on pollinators like honeybees and potential to contaminate water bodies have drawn significant criticism. Herein, a nanopesticide, NTP@LDH, was developed by intercalating the model neonicotinoid insecticide nitenpyram (NTP) within layered double hydroxide (LDH) materials using a simple one-pot method. The NTP@LDH showed a nano-sized sheet structure, with an average particle size of 206.2 nm and a loading capacity of 14.6 %. The release rate of NTP@LDH under acidic conditions was higher than that under alkaline or neutral conditions. The photodegradation capacity and insecticidal activity of NTP were unaffected by intercalation in LDH. Importantly, NTP@LDH could significantly enhance the foliar adhesive properties of NTP, retard its leaching through the soil, and improve its safety for honeybees. Moreover, LDH was safe for crops and can improve their growth. This work provides a promising strategy with a simple procedure that could reduce leaching risks of neonicotinoids while concurrently enhancing their safety to pollinating creatures.

Macrophages maintain hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) quality by assessing cell surface Calreticulin (Calr), an "eat-me" signal induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Using zebrafish genetics, we identified Beta-2-microglobulin (B2m) as a crucial "don't eat-me" signal on blood stem cells. A chemical screen revealed inducers of surface Calr that promoted HSC proliferation without triggering ROS or macrophage clearance. Whole-genome CRISPR-Cas9 screening showed that Toll-like receptor 3 (Tlr3) signaling regulated b2m expression. Targeting b2m or tlr3 reduced the HSC clonality. Elevated B2m levels correlated with high expression of repetitive element (RE) transcripts. Overall, our data suggest that RE-associated double-stranded RNA could interact with TLR3 to stimulate surface expression of B2m on hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. These findings suggest that the balance of Calr and B2m regulates macrophage-HSC interactions and defines hematopoietic clonality.

Ceracris kiangsu (Orthoptera: Arcypteridae), is greatly affected by climatic factors and exhibits strong adaptability, posing a serious threat to the ecological environment. Therefore, predicting its potential suitable habitat distribution provides a proactive theoretical basis for pest control. This study using the Biomod2 package of R simulated and predicted the current and future potential distribution, area changes, changes in the center points of suitable habitats, and niche shifts of C. kiangsu under two different greenhouse gas emission scenarios, SSP1-26 and SSP5-85. The results show that: (1) Currently, the high suitability areas for C. kiangsu are mainly distributed in Yunnan, Jiangxi, Hunan provinces in southern China and phongsaly province in northern Laos. In the future, the center of the suitable habitat distribution pattern of C. kiangsu will remain unchanged, primarily expanding outward from medium and high suitability areas. Additionally, significant suitable habitats for C. kiangsu were discovered in Southeast Asian countries without previous pest records. (2) Compared to the present, the overall suitable habitat area for C. kiangsu is expected to expand, particularly under the SSP5-85 climate change scenario. (3) In the SSP1-26 and SSP5-85 climate scenarios, the geometric center of the suitable habitat generally shows a trend of gradually shifting northeast. (4) Under different climate scenarios, the suitable habitat of C. kiangsu has highly overlapping, indicating that the suitable habitat of C. kiangsu in the invaded areas is broader than in its native regions. In conclusion, the research findings represent a breakthrough in identifying the potential distribution areas of C. kiangsu, which is of great practical significance for the monitoring and control of C. kiangsu pest infestation in China and Southeast Asian countries.

Objective: Rifampin-resistant tuberculosis (RR-TB) remains a serious global public health concern. We assessed treatment outcomes and associated influencing factors among RR-TB patients in China. Methods: This research enrolled 1339 patients who started RR-TB treatment between May 2018 and April 2020 in China retrospectively. Data were collected from the electronic medical records. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify the influencing factors related to unfavorable outcomes. Results: Of the 1339 RR-TB patients, 78.8% (1055/1339) achieved treatment success (cured or treatment completed), 5.1% (68/1339) experienced treatment failure, 1.1% (15/1339) died during treatment, 10.1% (135/1339) were lost to follow-up, and 4.9% (66/1339) were not evaluated. About 67.7% (907/1339) of patients experienced at least one adverse event (AE). The most common AE was hypohepatia (507/1339, 37.9%), followed by hyperuricemia (429/1339, 32.0%), anemia (368/1339, 27.5%), electrolyte disturbance (318/1339, 23.7%), peripheral neuritis (245/1339, 18.3%), and gastrointestinal reactions (203/1339, 15.2%). Multivariate analysis showed that age ≥60 years [adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 1.96, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.39-2.77], national minority (aOR: 2.36, 95% CI: 1.42-3.93), smoking (aOR: 1.50, 95% CI: 1.10-2.04), cardiopathy (aOR: 2.90, 95% CI: 1.33-6.31), tumors (aOR: 9.84, 95% CI: 2.27-42.67), immunocompromise (aOR: 2.17, 95% CI: 1.21-3.91), re-treated TB (aOR: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.08-1.97), and experienced gastrointestinal reactions (aOR: 2.27, 95% CI: 1.52-3.40) were associated with unfavorable outcomes. Body mass index (BMI) ≥18.5 kg/m2, regimens containing bedaquiline and experienced adverse events (AEs) such as hypohepatia, leukopenia, peripheral neuritis, and optic neuritis were associated with favorable outcomes. Conclusion: High rates of treatment success were achieved for RR-TB patients at tertiary tuberculosis hospitals in China. Age ≥60 years, national minority, smoking status, comorbidities, re-treated TB, and experienced gastrointestinal reactions were independent prognostic factors for unfavorable treatment outcomes.

The Zn(II)2Cys6 zinc cluster protein family comprises a subclass of zinc-finger proteins that serve as transcriptional regulators involved in a diverse array of fugal biological processes. However, the roles and mechanisms of the Zn(II)2Cys6 transcription factors in mediating Botrytis cinerea, a necrotrophic fungus that causes gray mold in over 1000 plant species, development and virulence remain obscure. Here, we demonstrate that a novel B. cinerea pathogenicity-associated factor BcFTG1 (fungal transcription factor containing the GAL4 domain), identified from a virulence-attenuated mutant M20162 from a B. cinerea T-DNA insertion mutant library, plays an important role in oxalic acid (OA) secretion, carbon source absorption and cell wall integrity. Loss of BcFTG1 compromises the ability of the pathogen to secrete OA, absorb carbon sources, maintain cell wall integrity, and promote virulence. Our findings provide novel insights into fungal factors mediating the pathogenesis of the gray mold fungus via regulation of OA secretion, carbon source utilization and cell wall integrity.

Sepsis, a life-threatening condition, involves complex interactions among metabolic alterations, inflammatory mediators, and host responses. This study utilized a bidirectional Mendelian randomization approach to investigate the causal relationships between 1400 metabolites and sepsis, and the mediating role of inflammatory factors. We identified 36 metabolites significantly associated with sepsis (p < 0.05), with AXIN1, FGF-19, FGF-23, IL-4, and OSM showing an inverse association, suggesting a protective role, while IL-2 exhibited a positive correlation, indicating a potential risk factor. Among these metabolites, Piperine and 9-Hydroxystearate demonstrated particularly interesting protective effects against sepsis. Piperine's protective effect was mediated through its interaction with AXIN1, contributing to a 16.296% reduction in sepsis risk. This suggests a potential pathway where Piperine influences sepsis outcomes by modulating AXIN1 levels. 9-Hydroxystearate also exhibited a protective role against sepsis, mediated through its positive association with FGF-19 and negative association with IL-2, contributing 9.436% and 12.565%, respectively, to its protective effect. Experimental validation confirmed significantly elevated IL-2 levels and reduced FGF-19, AXIN1, piperine, and 9-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid levels in sepsis patients compared to healthy controls. Piperine levels positively correlated with AXIN1, while 9-hydroxyoctadecanoic acid levels negatively correlated with IL-2 and positively correlated with FGF-19, supporting the Mendelian randomization findings. Our findings provide insights into the molecular mechanisms of sepsis, highlighting the unique roles and contributions of specific metabolites and their interactions with inflammatory mediators. This study enhances our understanding of sepsis pathophysiology and opens avenues for targeted therapeutic interventions and biomarker development for sepsis management. However, further research is essential to validate these pathways across diverse populations and fully explore the roles of these metabolites in sepsis.

Based on the polynomial theory, the error propagation characteristics of the widely used N-step discrete Fourier transform (N-DFT) phase-shift algorithm were analyzed via theoretical analysis, under the effect of Gamma distortion and phase detuning. The results showed that the N-DFT algorithm could not simultaneously suppress both types of error. A robust linear phase-shift (RLPS) algorithm was designed, the performance of the RLPS and 8-DFT algorithms in terms of spectral response, detuning robustness, and G S / N was briefly analysis by Manuel Servin method. The Simulation analysis and comparison of the results show that the RLPS algorithm could suppress both types of error simultaneously, which exhibited better stability and accuracy than N-DFT and exponential algorithms, particularly in gradient measurement stability, peak-to-valley (PV) and root-mean-square (RMS) error suppression. Moreover, a physical experiment apparatus was built to test unidirectionally inclined plane mirror and concave mirror using the RLPS, N-DFT, and exponential algorithms. The results showed that the RLPS algorithm could significantly improve the measurement stability and accuracy in the presence of detuning and without screen Gamma calibration.

Flexible and high-performance aqueous Zn-ion batteries (ZIBs), coupled with low cost and safe, are considered as one of the most promising energy storage candidates for wearable electronics. However, most of hydrogel electrolytes suffer from poor mechanical properties and interfacial chemistry, which limits them to suppressed performance levels in flexible ZIBs, especially under harsh mechanical strains. Herein, a bio-inspired multifunctional hydrogel electrolyte network (polyacrylamide (PAM)/trehalose) with improved mechanical and adhesive properties was developed via a simple trehalose network-repairing strategy to stabilize the interfacial chemistry for highly reversible flexible ZIBs. As a result, the trehalose-modified PAM hydrogel exhibits a superior strength and stretchability up to 100 kPa and 5338%, respectively, as well as strong adhesive properties to various substrates. Also, the PAM/trehalose hydrogel electrolyte provides superior anti-corrosion capability for Zn anode and regulates Zn nucleation/growth, resulting in achieving a high Coulombic efficiency of 98.8%, and long-term stability over 2400 h. Importantly, the flexible Zn//MnO2 pouch cell exhibits excellent cycling performance under different bending conditions, which offers a great potential in flexible energy-related applications and beyond.

Bioactivity screening revealed that the EtOAc extract from the culture broth of Phellinus igniarius SY489 exhibited remarkable α-glucosidase inhibitory activity, with an IC50 value of 1.92 µg/mL. Activity- and ultraviolet (UV) profile-guided isolation led to the discovery of four anti-diabetic styrylpyrones (1-4), including two novel compounds, phelignidins A (1) and B (2). Compounds 1 and 2 represent a rare structural type of styrylpyrone dimer, in which one of the pyrone moieties exists in an open-ring state. The absolute configurations of the new compounds 1 and 2, as well as the previously unresolved compound 3, were established. Compounds 1-4 were effective in α-glucosidase inhibition, anti-glycation, and antioxidant assays, surpassing or being comparable to the positive control drugs, with minimal cytotoxicity. Furthermore, studies on α-glucosidase inhibition mechanisms suggested that these compounds interact with α-glucosidase at a single binding site, causing secondary structure unfolding and exerting inhibitory activity via a mixed-type mechanism. These results provide an important basis for developing novel, low-toxicity, multi-target anti-diabetic drugs from edible and medicinal fungi.

Microorganisms co-exist and co-evolve in nature, forming intricate ecological communities. The interspecies cross-talk within these communities creates and sustains their great biosynthetic potential, making them an important source of natural medicines and high-value-added chemicals. However, conventional investigations into microbial metabolites are typically carried out in pure cultures, resulting in the absence of specific activating factors and consequently causing a substantial number of biosynthetic gene clusters to remain silent. This, in turn, hampers the in-depth exploration of microbial biosynthetic potential and frequently presents researchers with the challenge of rediscovering compounds. In response to this challenge, the coculture strategy has emerged to explore microbial biosynthetic capabilities and has shed light on the study of cross-talk mechanisms. These elucidated mechanisms will contribute to a better understanding of complex biosynthetic regulations and offer valuable insights to guide the mining of secondary metabolites. This review summarizes the research advances in microbial cross-talk mechanisms, with a particular focus on the mechanisms that activate the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites. Additionally, the instructive value of these mechanisms for developing strategies to activate biosynthetic pathways is discussed. Moreover, challenges and recommendations for conducting in-depth studies on the cross-talk mechanisms are presented.

Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the aquaculture environment are receiving increasing public attention as emerging contaminants. In this study, aquatic plant (P) and sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFC) were used individually and in combination (P-SMFC) to simulate in situ remediation of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and sul genes in aquaculture environments. The results showed that the average power densities of SMFC and P-SMFC were 622.18 mW m-2 and 565.99 mW m-2, respectively. The addition of 5 mg kg-1 of SMX to the sediment boosted the voltages of SMFC and P-SMFC by 36.3% and 51.5%, respectively. After 20 days of treatment, the removal efficiency of SMX from the sediment was 86.17% and 89.60% for SMFC and P-SMFC group, respectively, which were significantly higher than the control group (P < 0.05). However, removal of SMX by plants was not observed. P-SMFC group significantly reduced the biotoxicity of SMX to Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli in the overlying water (P < 0.05). P and P-SMFC groups significantly reduced the abundance of ARGs intl1 and sul1 (P < 0.05). The removal rate of ARGs intl1, sul1 and sul2 from sediments by P-SMFC ranged from 94.22% to 97.08%. However, SMFC increased the abundance of sul3. SMFC and P-SMFC increased the relative abundance of some of sulfate-reducing bacteria such as Desulfatiglans, Thermodesulfovibrionia and Sva0485 in sediments. These results showed that aquatic plants promoted the removal of ARGs and SMFC promoted the removal of antibiotics, and the combination with aquatic plants and SMFC achieved a synergistic removal of both SMX and ARGs. Therefore, current study provides a promising approach for the in situ removal of antibiotics and ARGs in the aquaculture environment.

Hypertension (HT) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Krüppel-like factors (KLFs) are important transcription factors in eukaryotes. Studies have reported that KLF4 and KLF5 are correlated with several cardiovascular diseases, whereas population studies for associations between HT and KLF4 or KLF5 have been rarely reported. Thus, the current study aimed to examines the association of genetic variants and mRNA expression levels of KLF4 and KLF5 with HT, as well as the effect of antihypertensive drugs on the expression levels. The associations of one single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in KLF4 and three SNPs in KLF5 with HT were investigated using a combination of case-control and cohort studies. The study population were selected from a community-based population cohort in four different regions of Jiangsu Province. Risks of HT were estimated through logistic and Cox regression analyses, respectively. In addition, mRNA expression levels of KLF4 and KLF5 were measured in 246 controls and 385 HT cases selected from the cohort study as mentioned above. Among the HT cases, 263 were not taking antihypertensive drugs [AHD(-)] and 122 were taking antihypertensive drugs [AHD(+)]. In the case-control study, SNP rs9573096 (C>T) in KLF5 was significantly associated with an increased risk of HT in the additive model (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 1.106; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.009 to 1.212). In the cohort study of the normotensive population, rs9573096 in KLF5 was also significantly associated with an increased risk of HT in the additive model (adjusted hazards ratio [HR], 1.199; 95% CI, 1.070 to 1.344). KLF4 and KLF5 mRNA expression levels were significantly higher in the AHD(-) group than in the control group ( P < 0.05), but lower in the AHD(+) group than in the AHD(-) group ( P < 0.05). The current study demonstrated the associations of KLF4 and KLF5 genetic variants with hypertension, and the indicative discriminations of mRNA expression levels of KLF4 and KLF5 for risk of hypertension and antihypertensive treatment.
