RESUMEN

Although the water extract of Eucommia ulmoides leaf (WEE) promotes egg laying in hens, its palatability is poor. To improve the palatability of E. ulmoides leaf, probiotic fermentation was used, and fermented extract E. ulmoides leaf (FEE) was prepared using Lactiplantibacillus plantarum. The safety of FEE was investigated using a long-term toxicity test, and no oxidative damage, inflammatory reactions, or histological lesions were observed in the experimental rats receiving dietary supplementation of FEE at 200 mg/kg, suggesting that FEE is suitable for long-term feeding. Subsequently, dietary supplementation of FEE (group C) in comparison with dietary supplementation of WEE (group B), as well as a control (group A), was applied in the hen industry. Laying performance, egg quality, egg nutrition, egg flavor, and the gut microbiome were analyzed comparatively. Interestingly, the laying rate was observed to be four percentage points higher with dietary supplementation of FEE at 200 mg/kg compared with the control and two percentage points higher compared with the dietary addition of WEE at the same dosage. Simultaneously, a slight upregulation in daily feed consumption was determined in the FEE-supplemented group compared with the blank control and the WEE-supplemented group, indicating that the inclusion of FEE stimulated the hens' appetite. Moreover, variations in egg amino acids, fatty acids, and volatile components were obtained with either dietary addition, FEE or WEE, implying that dietary supplementation of the fermented and water-extracted E. ulmoides leaf extracts contributed to egg flavor change. Furthermore, variations in the gut microbiota were mediated by FEE, increasing the relative abundance of the genus Lactobacillus. These alterations in gut microbiota were tightly related to improved laying performance and egg flavor changes. Our results indicate that FEE is a better alternative feed additive in the hen industry than WEE.

RESUMEN

Time perception has been known to depend on the temporal frequency of the stimulus. Previously, the effect of temporal frequency modulation was assumed to be monotonically lengthening or shortening. However, this study shows that temporal frequency affects time perception in a non-monotonic and modality-dependent manner. Four experiments investigated the time distortion effects induced by modulation of temporal frequency across auditory and visual modalities. Critically, the temporal frequency was parametrically manipulated across four levels (steady stimulus, 10-, 20-, and 30/40-Hz intermittent auditory/visual stimulus). Experiment 1, 2, and 3 consistently showed that a 10-Hz auditory stimulus was perceived as shorter than a steady auditory stimulus. Meanwhile, as the temporal frequency increased, the perceived duration of the intermittent auditory stimulus was lengthened. A 40-Hz auditory stimulus was perceived as longer than a 10- Hz auditory stimulus, but did not differ significantly from a steady one. Experiment 4 showed that, for the visual modality, a 10-Hz visual stimulus was perceived as longer than a steady stimulus, and the perceived duration was lengthened as temporal frequency increased. This study demonstrated that within the scope of the temporal frequencies examined in this study, there were differential distortion effects observed across sensory modalities.

RESUMEN

Objective@#To investigate the occupational delay of gratification among community healthcare workers and its influencing factors, so as to provide insights into the sustainable development of primary healthcare personnel.@*Methods@#The in-service community healthcare workers from 5-7 community health service centers in 9 cities (prefectures) of Guizhou Province were selected using a multi-stage stratified random sampling method. Gender, age, and educational level and other basic information were collected through questionnaire surveys. The status of occupational delay of gratification was investigated using the Occupational Delay of Gratification Scale. Multiple linear regression model was used to analyze the influencing factors of occupational delay of gratification.@*Results@#A total of 2 076 respondents were surveyed, including 367 males (17.68%) and 1 709 females (82.32%). There were 112 respondents (5.39%) with secondary vocational school degree or below, 872 respondents (42.00%) with junior college degree, 1 087 respondents (52.36%) with bachelor's degree, and 5 respondents (0.24%) with master's degree or above. There were 665 respondents (32.03%) with managerial positions. The monthly income of 1 705 respondents (82.13%) was ≤5 000 Yuan. The total score of occupational delay of gratification was (33.22±4.33) points, and the total average score was (2.77±0.36) points. The average scores of work delay, career delay and persistence were (2.67±0.48), (2.96±0.45) and (2.75±0.46) points, respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis identified educational level (junior college, β=0.089; bachelor's degree, β=0.088), management position (not have, β=-0.046) and monthly income (>6 000 Yuan, β=0.085) as factors affecting occupational delay of gratification (all P<0.05).@*Conclusion@#The community healthcare workers with an education below secondary vocational school, no management position and lower income have relatively lower level of occupational delay of gratification.

RESUMEN

Affective empathy is generally considered an important inhibitor of aggression. However, the meta-analysis studies on the relationship between affective empathy and aggression have challenged this common-sense view and found no substantial correlation between the two variables. We proposed a double-edged sword model to explain this counterintuitive phenomenon and tested this model by establishing an inconsistent mediation model. A total of 663 college students in China (59.1% female; Mage = 20.69 years) completed questionnaires measuring affective empathy, sympathy, personal distress, anger proneness, and physical aggression. The results showed that on the one hand, affective empathy can indirectly inhibit physical aggression by increasing sympathy; on the other hand, affective empathy can indirectly promote physical aggression through the serial mediation of personal distress and anger proneness. Such two pathways offset each other, leading to an insignificant relation observation between affective empathy and physical aggression. The findings revealed the complexity of the relationship between affective empathy and aggression, which suggested that more efforts to reduce aggression should be made to develop individuals' sympathy, while affective empathy training should be moderate to avoid excessive empathic emotional arousal.

RESUMEN

This work describes two new colorimetric nanosensors for label-free, equipment-free quantitative detection of nanomolar copper (II) (Cu2+) and mercury (II) (Hg2+) ions. Both are based on the analyte-promoted growth of Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) from the reduction of chloroauric acid by 4-morpholineethanesulfonic acid. For the Cu2+ nanosensor, the analyte can accelerate such a redox system to rapidly form a red solution containing dispersed, uniform, spherical AuNPs that is related to these particles' surface plasmon resonance property. For the Hg2+ nanosensor, on the other hand, a blue mixture consisting of aggregated, ill-defined AuNPs with various sizes can be created, showing a significantly enhanced Tyndall effect (TE) signal (in comparison with that produced in the red solution of AuNPs). By using a timer and a smartphone to quantitatively measure the time of producing the red solution and the TE intensity (i.e., the average gray value of the corresponding image) of the blue mixture, respectively, the developed nanosensors are well demonstrated to achieve linear ranges of 6.4 nM to 100 µM and 6.1 nM to 1.56 µM for Cu2+ and Hg2+, respectively, with detection limits down to 3.5 and 0.1 nM, respectively. The acceptable recovery results obtained from the analysis of the two analytes in the complex real water samples including drinking water, tap water, and pond water ranged from 90.43 to 111.56%.

RESUMEN

Most research on working memory (WM) training for children with developmental dyslexia (DD) has focused on western alphabetical languages. Moreover, most of these studies used a combination of training tasks targeting a variety of WM components, making it difficult to determine whether WM training generates a general improvement in overall reading, or improves specific cognitive skills corresponding to the WM components that are targeted in training. We tested the general and specific effects of WM training on the reading skills of 45 Chinese children with DD, grades 3 to 5. In Experiment 1, the experimental group received a program targeting the verbal WM component; in Experiment 2, the experimental group was trained with a program targeting visuospatial WM. In both experiments the control group played a placebo video game. In Experiment 1, the experimental group outperformed the control group on the visual rhyming task, which is highly correlated with verbal WM. In Experiment 2, the experimental group outperformed the control group on the orthographic awareness test, which is highly correlated with visuospatial WM. Furthermore, in both Experiment 1 and Experiment 2, the experimental groups outperformed the control groups on the fast word naming test, which is highly related to both visuospatial WM and verbal WM. Results indicated that WM training improved specific reading-related cognitive skills that are highly correlated with the specific WM components that were the target of training.

RESUMEN

In this article, we describe a facile method named as Rubik's Cube stamping (RCS) for equipment-free fabrication of microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (µPADs). RCS is inspired by the worldwide ubiquitous RC toy and requires no specialized electric equipment other than a classical six-faced RC that is assembled with home-made small iron components. It can pattern various rosin microstructures in paper simply by either using different functional faces of the modified RC or applying its internal pivot mechanism to adjust the components' patterning forms on one functional face. Such a versatile stamping method is quite simple and inexpensive, and thus holds potential for producing rosin-patterned µPADs by untrained users in resource-limited environments such as small laboratories and private clinics, or even at home and in the field. Moreover, a set of one-channel devices are fabricated to design a point-of-care aptamer-based assay with near sample-in-answer-out capability that integrates enzymatic reactions for robust yet efficient signal amplification and a personal glucometer for portable, user-friendly, rapid and quantitative readout. Its utility is well demonstrated with the sensitive and specific detection of adenosine as a model target in buffer samples and undiluted human urine within several minutes. With the advantages of low cost, simplicity, portability, rapidity, and aptamer variety, this general point-of-care assay system reported here may find broad applications including home healthcare, field-based environmental monitoring or food analysis and emergency situations.

RESUMEN

The intramolecular electronic couplings in organic mixed-valence systems [D-(ph)(n)-D](•+) (D = 2,5-dimethoxy-4-methylphenyl, n = 0, 1, and 2) are calculated by dominantly using density functional theory to investigate their dependence of functionals. Since these systems have the property that the charge is from localization to delocalization, the optimized structures are sensitive to the functionals. The geometric optimizations show that CAM-B3LYP and ωB97X-D functionals are good choices for delocalized systems and LC-ωPBE and M06HF are suitable for the systems from charge almost localization to localization. The calculations of electronic couplings demonstrate that the pure functional generally underestimates the electronic couplings whereas the pure HF overestimates them. Furthermore, the electronic couplings from the conventional generalized Mulliken-Hush method are very sensitive to the HF component in functionals, which makes it a challenge to accurately estimate the values. A new reduced two-state method is thus proposed to overcome the deficiency, and the obtained electronic couplings are less sensitive to the ω value in LC-ω PBE functional and they are also consistent with the experimental data.
