RESUMEN

Background: Chemotherapeutic drugs have some drawbacks in antineoplastic therapy, mainly containing seriously toxic side effects caused by injection and multi-drug resistance (MDR). Co-delivery with two or more drugs via nanomicelles is a promising strategy to solve these problems. Oral chemotherapy is increasingly preferred owing to its potential to enhance the life quality of patients. Methods and Results: The study intended to develop mixed micelles using D-α-Tocopherol poly(ethylene glycol) 1000 succinate (TPGS) and soluplus for the co-encapsulation of docetaxel (DTX) and curcumin (CUR), marked as (DTX+CUR)-loaded mixed micelles, treating drug-resistant breast cancer by oral administration. The (DTX+CUR)-loaded mixed micelles had a uniform particle size (~64 nm), high drug loading and encapsulation efficiency, in vitro sustained-release properties and good pH-dependent stability. In vitro cell study, the (DTX+CUR)-loaded mixed micelles displayed the highest cellular uptake, cytotoxicity, cell apoptosis-inducing rates and cell ROS-inducing levels on MCF-7/Adr cells. Notably, in vivo pharmacokinetic studies, (DTX+CUR)-loaded mixed micelles enhanced markedly the oral absorption of DTX compared to pure DTX, with a relative oral bioavailability of 574%. The (DTX+CUR)-loaded mixed micelles by oral administration had the same anticancer efficacy as taxotere by injection in resistant breast cancer bearing mice. Conclusion: (DTX+CUR)-loaded mixed micelles could provide a potential formulation for treating drug-resistant breast cancers by oral administration.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Data on long-term cancer survivors treated with apatinib are lacking. This study aimed to describe the characteristics of long-term cancer survivors after apatinib-based therapy, and to know about their satisfaction degree with apatinib and severity of depression and insomnia. METHODS: Patients with solid tumors who had received apatinib-based therapy for at least 5 years were invited to complete an online questionnaire. Characteristics of patients and treatment, knowledge of apatinib, satisfaction degree, and severity of depression and insomnia assessed by Patient Health Questionnaire-9 and Insomnia Severity Index were collected. RESULTS: Between December 8, 2023 and March 1, 2024, a total of 436 patients completed the online questionnaire. Most patients were satisfied with the efficacy (96.6%) and safety (93.1%) of apatinib, were willing to continue apatinib treatment (99.5%), and would recommend apatinib to other patients (93.3%). Continuous apatinib treatment resulted in significant negative impact on daily life, work, or study in only two (0.5%) patients. Almost all patients currently had no or mild depression (97.0%) and insomnia (97.9%) problems. The most common patient-reported adverse events were hand-foot syndrome (21.3%) and hypertension (18.3%). CONCLUSIONS: Our survey showed a high satisfaction degree with apatinib in long-term cancer survivors. Long-term apatinib treatment resulted in almost no negative impact on patient's quality of life.

RESUMEN

Gouty arthritis is a chronic and progressive disease characterized by high urate levels in the joints and by an inflammatory immune microenvironment. Clinical data indicate that urate reduction therapy or anti-inflammatory therapy alone often fails to deliver satisfactory outcomes. Here we have developed a smart biomimetic nanosystem featuring a 'shell' composed of a fusion membrane derived from M2 macrophages and exosomes, which encapsulates liposomes loaded with a combination of uricase, platinum-in-hyaluronan/polydopamine nanozyme and resveratrol. The nanosystem targets inflamed joints and promotes the accumulation of anti-inflammatory macrophages locally, while the uricase and the nanozyme reduce the levels of urate within the joints. Additionally, site-directed near-infrared irradiation provides localized mild thermotherapy through the action of platinum and polydopamine, initiating heat-induced tissue repair. Combined use of these components synergistically enhances overall outcomes, resulting in faster recovery of the damaged joint tissue.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: As research on diabetes continues to advance, more complex classifications of this disease have emerged, revealing the existence of special types of diabetes, and many of these patients are prone to misdiagnosis and underdiagnosis, leading to treatment delays and increased health care costs. The purpose of this study was to identify four causes of secondary diabetes. CASE SUMMARY: Secondary diabetes can be caused by various factors, some of which are often overlooked. These factors include genetic defects, autoimmune disorders, and diabetes induced by tumours. This paper describes four types of secondary diabetes caused by Williams-Beuren syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, pituitary adenoma, and IgG4-related diseases. These cases deviate significantly from the typical progression of the disease due to their low incidence and rarity, often leading to their neglect in clinical practice. In comparison to regular diabetes patients, the four individuals described here exhibited distinct characteristics. Standard hypoglycaemic treatments failed to effectively control the disease. Subsequently, a series of examinations and follow-up history confirmed the diagnosis and underlying cause of diabetes. Upon addressing the primary condition, such as excising a pituitary adenoma, providing glucocorticoid supplementation, and implementing symptomatic treatments, all patients experienced a considerable decrease in blood glucose levels, which were subsequently maintained within a stable range. Furthermore, other accompanying symptoms improved. CONCLUSION: Rare diseases causing secondary diabetes are often not considered in the diagnosis of diabetes. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct genetic tests, antibody detection and other appropriate diagnostic measures when necessary to facilitate early diagnosis and intervention through proactive and efficient management of the underlying condition, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

RESUMEN

Developing an efficient electrocatalyst that enables the efficient electrochemical conversion from CO2 to CH4 across a wide potential range remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we introduce a precatalyst strategy that realizes the in situ electrochemical reconstruction of ultrafine Cu2O nanodomains, intricately coupled on the CeO2 surface (Cu2O/CeO2), originating from the heterointerface comprised of ultrafine CuO nanodomains on the CeO2 surface (CuO/CeO2). When served as the electrocatalyst for the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction, Cu2O/CeO2 delivers a selectivity higher than 49 % towards CH4 over a broad potential range from -1.2 V to -1.7 V vs. RHE, maintaining negligible activity decay for 20 h. Notably, the highest selectivity for CH4 reaches an impressive 70 % at -1.5 V vs. RHE. Through the combination of comprehensive analysis including synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, spherical aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscope as well as the density functional theoretical calculation, the efficient production of CH4 is attributed to the coherent interface between Cu2O and CeO2, which could converted from the original CuO and CeO2 interface, ensuring abundant active sites and enhanced intrinsic activity and selectivity towards CH4.

RESUMEN

Adipocyte play an important role in human health and meat quality by influencing the tenderness, flavor, and juiciness of mutton It has been shown that neuron-derived neurotrophic factor (NENF) is closely related to energy metabolism and adipocyte differentiation in bovine. However, the role of NENF in the goats remains unclear. The aim of this study was to detect the expression of NENF in goat subcutaneous and intramuscular adipocytes, temporal expression profiles of the NENF, and overexpressed NENF on the differentiation of different adipocytes. In this study, PCR amplification successfully cloned the goat NENF gene with a fragment length of 521 bp. In addition, the time point of highest expression of NENF differed between these two adipocytes differentiation processes. Overexpression of NENF in intramuscular and subcutaneous adipocytes promoted the expression levels of differentiation markers CEBPß and SREBP, which in turn promoted the differentiation of intramuscular and subcutaneous adipocytes. This study will provide basic data for further study of the role of goats in goat adipocyte differentiation and for the final elucidation of its molecular mechanisms in regulating goat adipocyte deposition.

RESUMEN

Objective: To explore the relationship between receptor heterogeneity and clinicopathological characteristics in 166 patients with invasive breast cancer during metastasis. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 166 patients diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer through biopsy, who were admitted to our hospital from January 2018 to December 2022. Statistical analysis was employed to assess the heterogeneity of receptors in both primary and metastatic lesions, including estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 (HER2), Ki67, as well as their association with clinicopathological features such as tumor size, lymph node metastasis, treatment regimen, and disease-free survival. Results: The discordant expression rates of ER, PR, HER2, Ki-67 and Luminal classification between primary and metastatic lesions were 21.7%, 41.6%, 8.9%, 34.4% and 36.8%, respectively. There is a significant difference in disease-free survival between patients with consistent and inconsistent receptor status of primary and metastatic lesions, which is statistically significant. The median DFS for primary HER2(-) to metastatic HER2(+) was 84 months, which was relatively high. The Cox multivariate regression analysis revealed that the expression differences of ER, PR, HER2, and Ki67 were not influenced by endocrine therapy and chemotherapy. However, a statistically significant difference in HER2 expression was observed with targeted therapy. Tumor size was correlated with ER and Ki67 receptor status (P = 0.019, 0.016). Tumor size was not correlated with PR, and HER2 (P = 0.679, 0.440). Lymph node metastasis was not associated with changes in ER, PR, HER2, and Ki67. The discordant rates of ER, PR, HER2, and Ki-67 in patients with local recurrence were 22%, 23.7%, 5.1%, and 28.8% respectively, whereas those in patients with distant metastasis were 21.5%, 36.4%, 10.3%, and 31.8% respectively. Conclusions: The expression levels of ER, PR, HER2, and Ki-67 in primary and metastatic breast cancer exhibit heterogeneity, which is closely associated with the prognosis and treatment outcomes of patients.

RESUMEN

This study presents a biosensor fabricated based on integrated passive device (IPD) technology to measure microbial growth on solid media in real-time. Yeast (Pichia pastoris, strain GS115) is used as a model organism to demonstrate biosensor performance. The biosensor comprises an interdigital capacitor in the center with a helical inductive structure surrounding it. Additionally, 12 air bridges are added to the capacitor to increase the strength of the electric field radiated by the biosensor at the same height. Feasibility is verified by using a capacitive biosensor, and the change in capacitance values during the capacitance detection process with the growth of yeast indicates that the growth of yeast can induce changes in electrical parameters. The proposed IPD-based biosensor is used to measure yeast drop-added on a 3 mm medium for 100 h at an operating frequency of 1.84 GHz. The resonant amplitude of the biosensor varies continuously from 24 to 72 h due to the change in colony height during vertical growth of the yeast, with a maximum change of 0.21 dB. The overall measurement results also fit well with the Gompertz curve. The change in resonant amplitude between 24 and 72 h is then analyzed and reveals a linear relationship with time with a coefficient of determination of 0.9844, indicating that the biosensor is suitable for monitoring yeast growth. Thus, the proposed biosensor is proved to have potential in the field of microbial proliferation detection.

RESUMEN

Cytotoxicity assays are crucial for assessing the efficacy of drugs in killing cancer cells and determining their potential therapeutic value. Measurement of the effect of drug concentration, which is an influence factor on cytotoxicity, is of great importance. This paper proposes a cytotoxicity assay using microwave sensors in an end-point approach based on the detection of the number of live cells for the first time. In contrast to optical methods like fluorescent labeling, this research uses a resonator-type microwave biosensor to evaluate the effects of drug concentrations on cytotoxicity by monitoring electrical parameter changes due to varying cell densities. Initially, the feasibility of treating cells with ultrapure water for cell counting by a microwave biosensor is confirmed. Subsequently, inhibition curves generated by both the CCK-8 method and the new microwave biosensor for various drug concentrations were compared and found to be congruent. This agreement supports the potential of microwave-based methods to quantify cell growth inhibition by drug concentrations.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The workload of breast cancer pathological diagnosis is very heavy. The purpose of this study is to establish a nomogram model based on pathological images to predict the benign and malignant nature of breast diseases and to validate its predictive performance. METHODS: In retrospect, a total of 2,723 H&E-stained pathological images were collected from 1,474 patients at Qingdao Central Hospital between 2019 and 2022. The dataset consisted of 509 benign tumor images (adenosis and fibroadenoma) and 2,214 malignant tumor images (infiltrating ductal carcinoma). The images were divided into a training set (1,907) and a validation set (816). Python3.7 was used to extract the values of the R channel, G channel, B channel, and one-dimensional information entropy from all images. Multivariable logistic regression was used to select variables and establish the breast tissue pathological image prediction model. RESULTS: The R channel value, B channel value, and one-dimensional information entropy of the images were identified as independent predictive factors for the classification of benign and malignant pathological images (P < 0.05). The area under the curve (AUC) of the nomogram model in the training set was 0.889 (95% CI: 0.869, 0.909), and the AUC in the validation set was 0.838 (95% CI: 0.7980.877). The calibration curve results showed that the calibration curve of this nomogram model was close to the ideal curve. The decision curve results indicated that the predictive model curve had a high value for auxiliary diagnosis. CONCLUSION: The nomogram model for the prediction of benign and malignant breast diseases based on pathological images demonstrates good predictive performance. This model can assist in the diagnosis of breast tissue pathological images.

RESUMEN

Since different quantities of white blood cells (WBCs) in solution possess an adaptive osmotic pressure of cells, the WBCs themselves and in solution have similar concentrations, resulting in them having similar dielectric properties. Therefore, a microwave sensor could have difficulty in sensing the quantity variation when WBCs are in solution. This paper presents a highly sensitive, linear permittivity-inspired microwave biosensor for WBCs, counting through the evaporation method. Such a measurement method is proposed to record measurements after the cell solution is dripped onto the chip and is completely evaporated naturally. The proposed biosensor consists of an air-bridged asymmetric differential inductor and a centrally located circular fork-finger capacitor fabricated on a GaAs substrate using integrated passive fabrication technology. It is optimized to feature a larger sensitive area and improved Q-factor, which increases the effective area of interaction between cells and the electromagnetic field and facilitates the detection of their changes in number. The sensing relies on the dielectric properties of the cells and the change in the dielectric constant for different concentrations, and the change in resonance properties, which mainly represents the frequency shift, corresponds to the macroscopic change in the concentration of the cells. The microwave biosensors are used to measure biological samples with concentrations ranging from 0.25 × 106 to 8 × 106 cells per mL in a temperature (26.00 ± 0.40 °C) and humidity (54.40 ± 3.90 RH%) environment. The measurement results show a high sensitivity of 25.06 Hz/cells·mL-1 with a highly linear response of r2 = 0.99748. In addition, a mathematical modeling of individual cells in suspension is performed to estimate the dielectric constant of individual cells and further explain the working mechanism of the proposed microwave biosensor.

RESUMEN

In order to understand the pollution status of metals in the riparian soils along the Wujiang River, 26 sampling sites in the mainstream and tributary streams were selected for investigation. The geo-accumulation index (Igeo), Nemerow integrated pollution index, and potential ecological risk index were applied to evaluate the contamination status and ecological risks of metals. Results revealed that the average concentrations of As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn were 12.20, 0.51, 84.01, 57.42, 922.57, 38.37, 38.06, and 127.82 mg/kg, respectively. The metal contamination degree and ecological risks in the upper reaches were significantly higher than those in the middle and lower reaches of the Wujiang River. Cd was the dominant contamination metal. Significant non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of metals were found in children based on the hazard index and carcinogenic risk. As was the main non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic pollutant metal in both adults and children. According to principal component analysis, hierarchical clustering analysis, and absolute principal component scores-multiple linear regression, anthropogenic sources (mining and agricultural activities) contributed most to Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd, Cu, and Ni, with contribution rates of 89.14, 82.32, 74.46, 72.12, 68.52, and 61.02%, respectively. Natural sources contributed most to Mn, with a contribution rate of 83.07%. Unidentified sources contributed most to As, with a contribution rate of 47.27%.

RESUMEN

The slag entrapment defect has become a big issue for the IF steel casting process. In this study, the mechanism of mold flux entrapment in deep oscillation mark of an IF steel shell was studied by a high-temperature mold simulator. Results show that both temperature and heat flux in a copper mold become lower when mold flux B with lower melting and viscosity is used, compared with these when mold flux A with higher melting and viscosity is used. The average thickness of the slag film for mold fluxes A and B is 1.31 mm and 1.63 mm, and the consumption of them is 0.33 kg/m2 and 0.35 kg/m2, respectively. The shell for mold flux A exhibits sharper oscillation marks, while the shell for mold flux B has shallower oscillation marks. These deeper oscillation marks capture the mold flux by overflow of molten steel at the meniscus, which finally produces the slag entrapment defect in the shell.

RESUMEN

Augmented CD4+ T cell response in autoimmunity is characterized by extensive metabolic reprogramming. However, the epigenetic molecule that drives the metabolic adaptation of CD4+ T cells remains largely unknown. Here, we show that lysine acetyltransferase 6A (KAT6A), an epigenetic modulator that is clinically associated with autoimmunity, orchestrates the metabolic reprogramming of glucose in CD4+ T cells. KAT6A is required for the proliferation and differentiation of proinflammatory CD4+ T cell subsets in vitro, and mice with KAT6A-deficient CD4+ T cells are less susceptible to experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis and colitis. Mechanistically, KAT6A orchestrates the abundance of histone acetylation at the chromatin where several glycolytic genes are located, thus affecting glucose metabolic reprogramming and subsequent CD4+ T cell responses. Treatment with KAT6A small-molecule inhibitors in mouse models shows high therapeutic value for targeting KAT6A in autoimmunity. Our study provides novel insights into the epigenetic programming of immunometabolism and suggests potential therapeutic targets for patients with autoimmunity.

RESUMEN

ObjectiveTo determine the syndrome of a rat model of follicular dysplasia induced by Tripterygium glycosides based on prescriptions and investigate the mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine intervention via the adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK)/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR)/hypoxia-inducible factor-1 (HIF-1)/vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) pathway. MethodForty-eight rats with regular estrous cycles were randomly assigned into a normal group (n=8) and a modeling group (n=40). The rats in the modeling group were administrated with Tripterygium glycoside suspension (75 mL·kg-1) by gavage for 30 days. The modeled rats were assigned into model, Siwutang (3.69 g·kg-1), Youguiyin (3.11 g·kg-1), Zuoguiyin (7.29 g·kg-1), and Guishenwan (10.35 g·kg-1) groups, with 8 rats in each group. The drug intervention lasted for 14 days. The changes of estrous cycle were detected by Pap staining, and a stereoscope was used to observe the morphology of the ovarian tissue. Hematoxylin-eosin staining was employed to observe the pathological changes and follicle count in the ovarian tissue. Enzyme-related immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure the levels of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), and estradiol (E2) in the serum. Real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction and Western blot were employed to determine the mRNA and protein levels, respectively, of AMPK, mTOR, HIF-1, and VEGF in the ovarian tissue. ResultCompared with the normal group, the model group had a disordered estrous cycle, reduced secondary and mature follicles, increased atretic follicles, elevated FSH and LH levels, lowered E2 level, up-regulated mRNA and protein levels of AMPK, and down-regulated mRNA and protein levels of mTOR, HIF-1, and VEGF (P<0.01). Compared with the model group, Guishenwan increased secondary and mature follicles, decreased atretic follicles, lowered the FSH and LH levels, elevated the E2 level, down-regulated the mRNA and protein levels of AMPK, and up-regulated the mRNA and protein levels of mTOR, HIF-1, and VEGF (P<0.01). Compared with Guishenwan group, Siwutang, Youguiyin, and Zuoguiyin decreased mature follicles, increased atretic follicles (P<0.01), elevated the LH (P<0.01) and FSH (P<0.05) levels, and lowered the E2 level (P<0.05). In addition, Youguiyin up-regulated the protein level of AMPK (P<0.05) and down-regulated the mRNA levels of mTOR and HIF-1 (P<0.01) as well as the mRNA and protein levels of VEGF (P<0.01). Siwutang down-regulated the mRNA levels of mTOR and HIF-1 as well as the mRNA and protein levels of VEGF (P<0.05). Zuoguiyin down-regulated the mRNA level of mTOR and the protein and mRNA levels of VEGF (P<0.05). ConclusionGuishenwan may improve the ovarian function and promote follicle maturation in a rat model of follicular dysplasia by inhibiting the AMPK/mTOR/HIF-1/VEGF pathway, with the therapeutic effect superior to Zuoguiyin, Youguiyin, and Siwutang. It was hypothesized that this model presented the syndrome of kidney-essence deficiency.

RESUMEN

In this work, a new type, highly sensitive, and reusable nanoplastics (NPs) microwave detection method is proposed, which can be used to rapidly analyze NPs with different surface charges and sizes. The effective dielectric constant of NPs varies according to the different concentrations, particle sizes, and surface charges of NPs in aqueous solution. The feasibility of the microwave method for differential-charged NPs detection is verified using a complementary split ring resonator sensor manufactured on a cost-effective printed circuit board, which shows a high sensitivity only for positively charged NPs (PS-NH2) detection. To achieve microwave detection of both positively and negatively charged NPs (PS-SO3H), a microscale spiral-coupled resonator sensing chip is manufactured through integrated passive technology, which demonstrates extremely low detection limits and high sensitivity for both PS-NH2 and PS-SO3H, with different concentrations, particle sizes, and charges. In addition, for NPs solution doped with methyl orange, the device can still perform stable measurements, overcoming the inability of traditional NPs molecular element determination and optical detection methods to detect NPs aqueous solution with organic matter doping and color presence. The proposed microwave detection method could also be extended to sensing detection for detecting other hazardous environmental substances.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Protective color restoration of faded digital pathology images based on color transfer algorithm. METHODS: Twenty fresh tissue samples of invasive breast cancer from the pathology department of Qingdao Central Hospital in 2021 were screened. After HE staining, HE stained sections were irradiated with sunlight to simulate natural fading, and every 7 days was a fading cycle, and a total of 8 cycles were experienced. At the end of each cycle, the sections were digitally scanned to retain clear images, and the color changes of the sections during the fading process were recorded. The color transfer algorithm was applied to restore the color of the faded images; Adobe Lightroom Classic software presented the histogram of the image color distribution; UNet++ cell recognition segmentation model was used to identify the color restored images; Natural Image Quality Evaluator (NIQE), Information Entropy (Entropy), and Average Gradient (AG) were applied to evaluate the quality of the restored images. RESULTS: The restored image color met the diagnostic needs of pathologists. Compared with the faded images, the NIQE value decreased (P<0.05), Entropy value increased (P<0.01), and AG value increased (P<0.01). The cell recognition rate of the restored image was significantly improved. CONCLUSION: The color transfer algorithm can effectively repair faded pathology images, restore the color contrast between nucleus and cytoplasm, improve the image quality, meet the diagnostic needs and improve the cell recognition rate of the deep learning model.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Acupuncture has gained increasing international attention in recent decades. The act of incorporating acupuncture treatment into the routine treatment of COVID-19 in China drove us to review the 100 most influential articles of the last 20 years to learn about the current status and trends of acupuncture. METHOD: Articles related to acupuncture from January 1, 2001, to July 4, 2022, were searched in the Clarivate Analytics Web of Science Core Collection database. The top 100 most cited publications were selected, and information was extracted. Software such as VOSviewer, GraphPad Prism, Scimago Graphica, and CiteSpace were used to visualize and analyze the extracted data. RESULT: The 100 most cited articles were identified, with an average of 218 citations (range: 131-625). The majority of the top 100 articles were from the USA (n = 53). The institution that published the most highly cited papers was Harvard University (n = 16). The most influential team was Klaus Linde's group. Pain was the top-ranked journal in terms of the number of publications. The largest clusters for co-occurrence keyword analysis focused on acupuncture and electroacupuncture analgesia and brain imaging responses to acupuncture stimulation via functional MRI. The two highest strength burst keywords were "randomized controlled trials" and "osteoarthritis," with "randomized controlled trials" being a consistent burst keyword from 2011 to the present. CONCLUSION: This study provides insight into articles of historical significance in the field of acupuncture through bibliometric analysis. These data should provide clinicians and researchers with insight into future directions related to acupuncture.HintergrundDie Akupunktur hat in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten zunehmend die internationale Aufmerksamkeit auf sich gezogen. RESUMEN

Prosthetic polymeric heart valves (PHVs) have the potential to overcome the inherent material and design limitations of traditional valves in the treatment of valvular heart disease; however, their durability remains limited. Optimal design of the valve structure is necessary to improve their durability. This study aimed to enhance the fatigue resistance of PHVs by improving the stress distribution. Iterative subregional thickening of the leaflets was used, and the mechanical stress distribution and hemodynamics of these polymeric tri-leaflet valves were characterized using a fluid-structure interaction approach. Subregional thickening led to a reduction in stress concentration on the leaflet, with the effective orifice area still meeting ISO 5840-3 and the regurgitant volume achieving a similar value to those in previous studies. The maximum stress in the final iteration was reduced by 28% compared with that of the prototype. The proposed method shows potential for analyzing the stress distribution and hemodynamic performance of subregional thickened valves and can further improve the durability of PHVs.
