RESUMEN

Mechanochemistry studies the effect of mechanical force on chemical bonds, bringing opportunities for synthesizing alloys, ceramics, organics, polymers, and biomaterials. A vital issue of applying macro-scale mechanical force to manipulate crystal structures is finding ways to precisely adjust the force directions to break micro-scale target chemical bonds. Inspired by a common technique of driving a wedge into the wood to make wood chopping much easier, a wedging strategy of splitting three-dimensional structured crystalline frameworks and then converting them to nanosheets was proposed, where specific molecules were wedged into crystalline frameworks to drive the directional transmission of mechanical force to break chemical bonds. As a result, various crystalline framework nanosheets including metal-organic framework nanosheets, covalent organic framework nanosheets, and coordination polymer nanosheets were fabricated. This wedging crystal strategy exhibits advantages of operability, flexibility and designability, and furthermore, it is expected to expand mechanochemistry applications in material preparation.

INTRODUCTION: The Weight-Adjusted Waist Index (WWI) is a new indicator of obesity that is associated with all-cause mortality in Asian populations. Our study aimed to investigate the linear and non-linear associations between WWI and all-cause mortality in non-Asian populations in the United States, and whether WWI was superior to traditional obesity indicators as a predictor of all-cause mortality. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study using data from the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), involving 18,592 participants. We utilized Cox proportional hazard models to assess the association between WWI, BMI, WC, and the risk of all-cause mortality, and performed subgroup analyses and interaction tests. We also employed a receiver operating characteristics (ROC) curve study to evaluate the effectiveness of WWI, BMI, and WC in predicting all-cause mortality. RESULTS: After adjusting for confounders, WWI, BMI, and WC were positively associated with all-cause mortality. The performance of WWI, BMI, and WC in predicting all-cause mortality yielded AUCs of 0.697, 0.524, and 0.562, respectively. The data also revealed a U-shaped relationship between WWI and all-cause mortality. Race and cancer modified the relationship between WWI and all-cause mortality, with the relationship being negatively correlated in African Americans and cancer patients. CONCLUSIONS: In non-Asian populations in the United States, there is a U-shaped relationship between WWI and all-cause mortality, and WWI outperforms BMI and WC as a predictor of all-cause mortality. These findings may contribute to a better understanding and prediction of the relationship between obesity and mortality, and provide support for effective obesity management strategies.

OBJECTIVE: Previous epidemiological and experimental studies have yielded conflicting results regarding the influence of human micronutrient levels on the risk of colorectal polyps (CP). In our study, we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) investigation to probe the link between 13 human micronutrients (calcium, selenium, magnesium, phosphorus, folate, vitamins B-6, B-12, C, D, beta-carotene, iron, zinc, and copper) and the genetic susceptibility to CP. METHODS: Summary statistics for CP (n = 463,010) were obtained from pan-European genome-wide association studies, and instrumental variables for 13 micronutrients were screened from published genome-wide association studies (GWAS). After selecting suitable instrumental variables, we performed a two-sample MR study, deploying sensitivity analyses to judge heterogeneity and pleiotropy, using inverse variance weighted methods as our primary estimation tool. RESULTS: Our study identified that a genetic predisposition to elevated toenail and circulating selenium or serum ß-carotene concentrations lowers the risk of CP occurrence. However, no statistically significant association was observed between the other 11 micronutrients and the risk of CP. CONCLUSION: The study findings provide evidence that the micronutrient selenium and ß-carotene may confer protective effects against the development of CP.

Advanced oxidation process (AOP) wet scrubber is a powerful and clean technology for organic pollutant treatment but still presents great challenges in removing the highly toxic and hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Herein, we elaborately designed a bifunctional cobalt sulfide (CoS2)/activated carbon (AC) catalyst to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for efficient toxic VOC removal in an AOP wet scrubber. By combining the excellent VOC adsorption capacity of AC with the highly efficient PMS activation activity of CoS2, CoS2/AC can rapidly capture VOCs from the gas phase to proceed with the SO4•- and HO• radical-induced oxidation reaction. More than 90% of aromatic VOCs were removed over a wide pH range (3-11) with low Co ion leaching (0.19 mg/L). The electron-rich sulfur vacancies and low-valence Co species were the main active sites for PMS activation. SO4•- was mainly responsible for the initial oxidation of VOCs, while HO• and O2 acted in the subsequent ring-opening and mineralization processes of intermediates. No gaseous intermediates from VOC oxidation were detected, and the highly toxic liquid intermediates like benzene were also greatly decreased, thus effectively reducing the health toxicity associated with byproduct emissions. This work provided a comprehensive understanding of the deep oxidation of VOCs via AOP wet scrubber, significantly accelerating its application in environmental remediation.

Background: Depression has become a multifaceted global health issue, with complex connections to obesity. Weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) can effectively evaluate central obesity, but the relationship between WWI and depression has not been well studied. The study aims to investigate the potential correlation between these two health parameters. Methods: According to the data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, this cross-sectional study used multiple regression analysis, subgroup analysis, and smooth curve fitting to explore the relationship between WWI and depression. The assessment ability of WWI was evaluated and compared to other obesity indicators using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Results: This study analyzed 38,154 participants. Higher WWI is associated with higher depression scores (ß = 0.41; 95% CI, 0.36-0.47). After adjusting for various confounding factors, the positive correlation between WWI and depression remained significant (P for trend < 0.0001). Nonlinear positive correlation was detected with a breakpoint of 11.14. ROC analysis shows that compared to other obesity indicators (ROCWWI = 0.593; ROCBMI = 0.584; and ROCWC = 0.581), the correlation between WWI and depression has better discrimination and accuracy. DII mediated 4.93%, SII mediated 5.08%, and sedentary mediated 0.35% of the total association between WWI and depression. Conclusion: WWI levels were related to an increased likelihood of depression and showed a stronger relationship than BMI and waist circumference. Our findings indicated that WWI may serve as a simple anthropometric index to evaluate depression.

Background: Obesity and psychological factors were identified as risk factors for female infertility. The study investigated the correlation between WWI, depression, and secondary infertility, focusing on the potential mediating role of depression. Methods: According to the data from NHANES, this cross-sectional study used multiple regression analysis, subgroup analysis, and smooth curve fitting to explore the relationship between WWI, depression, and secondary infertility. The diagnostic ability of WWI was evaluated and compared to other obesity indicators using the ROC curve. The mediating effect test adopted the distribution of the product. Results: This study involved 2778 participants, including 381 (13.7%) women with secondary infertility. Results showed that higher WWI (OR = 1.31; 95% CI, 1.11-1.56) and depression scores (OR = 1.03; 95% CI, 1.01-1.06) were associated with secondary infertility. There was a positive correlation between WWI and secondary infertility (nonlinear p = 0.8272) and this association was still consistent in subgroups (all P for interaction> 0.05). Compared with other obesity indicators, WWI (AUC = 0.588) also shows good predictive performance for secondary infertility. Mediation analysis showed that depression mediated the relationship between 3.94% of WWI and secondary infertility, with a confidence interval of Za * Zb excluding 0. Conclusion: WWI exhibited a relatively good correlation in predicting secondary infertility than other obesity indicators, and depression may be a mediator between WWI and secondary infertility. Focusing on the potential mediating role of depression, the risk of secondary infertility due to obesity may be beneficially reduced in women.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) is closely connected to cardiovascular disease. We aimed to measure the association between cardiovascular health (CVH) levels, assessed by the Life's Essential 8 (LE8) score, and AAC within a nationally representative sample of the US. METHODS: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2014 participants were chosen for this cross-sectional investigation. LE8 scores, ranging from 0 to 100, were calculated according to the criteria outlined by the American Heart Association. AAC was evaluated using a semi-quantitative scoring system known as AAC-24. Weighted linear regression, multivariate logistic regression, and restricted cubic spline models were used to investigate the correlations. Subgroup analysis and interaction tests were conducted to assess this association's robustness across different population groups. RESULTS: Increased CVH levels were associated with diminished AAC scores and a reduced prevalence of severe AAC. In the partially adjusted model, each unit increase in LE8 score was associated with a 2% decrease in severe AAC prevalence [OR 0.98; 95% CI 0.96, 0.99]. Participants in the high CVH level group experienced a 72% reduced prevalence of severe AAC compared to those in the low CVH level group in model 2 [OR 0.28; 95% CI 0.12, 0.63]. This inverse association was notably more prominent in adults aged 60 years and above. CONCLUSIONS: CVH exhibited a robust negative correlation with AAC. Promoting optimal CVH levels may favor averting AAC within the general population.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) and diabetic kidney disease in individuals afflicted with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Comprehensive data were ascertained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2013-March 2020. Weighted univariate, multivariate logistic regression models, subgroup analyses and tests for interaction were performed. Additionally, we employed smooth curve fitting to assess linear correlations and the threshold effects were calculated by applying a binary linear regression model. Breakpoints are identified by a model with maximum likelihood ratio and a two-step recursive approach. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) along with the area under the curve (AUC) value predict the capability of WWI and body mass index for diabetic kidney disease. Results: A total of 10,661 individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes were included, and the overall prevalence of diabetic kidney disease was 20.74%. WWI exhibited a positive correlation with the likelihood of diabetic kidney disease in type 2 diabetes patients (OR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.03-1.33). The results of subgroup analysis showed significant interaction for gender (P < 0.05). Among female patients, U-shaped correlations were observed with a breakpoint at 11.48. Additionally, weight-adjusted waist index (AUC = 0.664) proved to be a more effective predictor of diabetic kidney disease compared to body mass index (AUC = 0.555). Conclusion: In patients with type 2 diabetes, increased weight-adjusted-waist index is implicated with an increased risk of diabetic kidney disease. WWI can be used as a new anthropometric index to predict diabetic kidney disease, and its predictive ability is stronger than body mass index.

Macrophages play a crucial role in aiding all phases of the wound-healing process and has garnered increasing attention recently. Although a substantial body of related studies has been published, there remains a lack of comprehensive bibliometric analysis. In this study, we collected 4296 papers from the Web of Science Core Collection database. Three tools including CiteSpace, VOSviewer and one online analytical platform were employed to conduct bibliometric analysis and data visualization. Our results revealed that the annual number of publications related to macrophage and wound healing has increased exponentially with the year. The United States and China stand as the primary driving forces within this field, collectively constituting 58.2% of the total publication output. The application of biomaterials was one of the most concerned research areas in this field. According to references analysis, the current research focus has shifted to diabetic wound healing and regulating macrophage polarization. Based on the keywords analysis, we identified the following research frontiers in the future: exosomes and other extracellular vesicles; bio-derived materials and drug delivery methods such as nanoparticles, scaffolds and hydrogels; immunomodulation and macrophage polarization in the M2-state; chronic wounds, particularly those associated with diabetes; antimicrobial peptides; and antioxidant. Additionally, TNF, IL-6, IL-10, TGF-ß1 and VEGF ranked as the five genes that have garnered the most research attention in the intersection of macrophage and wound healing. All in all, our findings offered researchers a holistic view of the ongoing progress in the field of macrophages and wound healing, serving as a valuable reference for scholars and policymakers in this domain.

Many studies have shown that long-chain noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in a variety of biological processes such as post-transcriptional gene regulation, splicing, and translation by combining with corresponding proteins. Predicting lncRNA-protein interactions is an effective approach to infer the functions of lncRNAs. The paper proposes a new computational model named LPI-IBWA. At first, LPI-IBWA uses similarity kernel fusion (SKF) to integrate various types of biological information to construct lncRNA and protein similarity networks. Then, a bounded matrix completion model and a weighted k-nearest known neighbors algorithm are utilized to update the initial sparse lncRNA-protein interaction matrix. Based on the updated lncRNA-protein interaction matrix, the lncRNA similarity network and the protein similarity network are integrated into a heterogeneous network. Finally, an improved Bi-Random walk algorithm is used to predict novel latent lncRNA-protein interactions. 5-fold cross-validation experiments on a benchmark dataset showed that the AUC and AUPR of LPI-IBWA reach 0.920 and 0.736, respectively, which are higher than those of other state-of-the-art methods. Furthermore, the experimental results of case studies on a novel dataset also illustrated that LPI-IBWA could efficiently predict potential lncRNA-protein interactions.

Ethylene oxide (EtO) is a widely used industrial chemical with recognized health risks. While its carcinogenic properties have been extensively studied, emerging evidence suggests potential associations with cardiovascular diseases. Using the recently introduced Life's Essential 8 (LE8) score as a comprehensive cardiovascular health (CVH) measure, this study aimed to elucidate the relationship between EtO exposure and CVH. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) encompassing 3748 adults was analyzed. CVH was assessed using the LE8 score, which incorporates diet, physical activity, tobacco/nicotine exposure, sleep duration, BMI, non-HDL cholesterol, blood glucose, and blood pressure. The association between EtO exposure, gauged by Hemoglobin adduct (HbEtO) levels, and CVH was examined using linear regression and Cox regression models. An inverse relationship between EtO exposure and the overall CVH score was identified. Specifically, for every 1-unit increase in ln-transformed HbEtO, a 3.69-point decrease in the total CVH score was observed. An inverted J-shaped association between ln-transformed HbEtO and CVH score emerged, with an inflection point at 3.15 pmol/g Hb. Elevated EtO exposure was not significantly linked to all-cause mortality but was robustly associated with increased cardiovascular mortality. Elevated EtO exposure is negatively associated with CVH, as outlined by the LE8 metrics. Beyond a certain threshold, this association underscores the cardiovascular risks of EtO exposure and highlights the importance of further research to determine underlying mechanisms and recommend preventive strategies.

Objective: This investigation sought to elucidate the potential correlation between a recently characterized adiposity metric, termed the Weight-Adjusted-Waist Index (WWI) and hyperuricemia. Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed in this study, featuring both hyperuricemic and non-hyperuricemic subjects with complete WWI data, sourced from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2017 to March 2020. WWI was calculated utilizing the formula which involves the division of waist circumference (WC) by the square root of the body weight. In order to determine the relationship between WWI and hyperuricemia, both univariate and multivariate logistic regression models, appropriately weighted, were employed in the analysis. The linearity of relationships was validated using smooth curve fitting. Additionally, subgroup evaluations and interaction assessments were conducted. Results: The study sample comprised 7437 subjects, yielding a hyperuricemia prevalence of 18.22%. Stratifying WWI into tertiles, a progressive rise in hyperuricemia prevalence was evident with increasing WWI (Tertile 1: 11.62%, Tertile 2: 17.91%, Tertile 3: 25.13%). The odds ratio (OR) demonstrated that individuals within the highest WWI tertile were significantly more prone to hyperuricemia than those in the lowest tertile (OR = 2.41, 95% CI: 1.88-3.08). Conclusion: This study provides evidence that an elevated WWI is correlated with an increased risk of hyperuricemia in the adult population of the United States. These results suggest that WWI may serve as a viable anthropometric indicator for predicting hyperuricemia.

Background: HPV infection is closely related to the occurrence of cervical cancer and has an important adverse effect on human life and health. This study used data from the NHANES 2003-2016 to investigate the relationship between PIR and HPV infection status among Americans aged 20 and older. Methods: The data for this cross-sectional investigation came from the 2003-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), which included 9580 women who were 20 years of age or older. The linear and nonlinear correlations between PIR and the presence of HPV infection were investigated using multiple linear regression and smooth curve fitting. The stability of the relationship across groups was examined using subgroup analysis and interaction tests. Results: There were 2232 impoverished homes and 2543 rich households among the 9580 adult participants aged 20 and above. PIR (ratio of income to poverty) was found to be significantly inversely related to the presence of HPV infection [0.91 (0.89, 0.94)] after adjusting for all other covariates, and the trend persisted even after categorizing PIR into high- and low-income groups (PIR>4 and PIR<1). In addition, significant negative relationships were discovered in subgroup analyses for women aged 25 to 59 [0.90 (0.88, 0.93)], non-Hispanic whites [0.80 (0.70, 0.92)], non-diabetics [0.91 (0.88, 0.94)], and those who had ever engaged in sex [0.91 (0.89, 0.94)]. Conclusions: PIR was highly and negatively correlated with the presence of HPV infection in American women aged 20 and older. The results of this study are of great significance for preventing HPV infection and improving the accuracy of HPV screening.

Vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photolysis is a facile method for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) elimination, but is greatly limited by the relatively low removal efficiency and the possible secondary pollution. To overcome above drawbacks, we developed an efficient method for VOCs elimination via VUV photolysis coupled with wet scrubbing process. In this coupled process, volatile toluene, a representative of VOCs, was oxidized by the gas-phase VUV photolysis, and then scrubbed into water for further oxidation by the liquid-phase VUV photolysis. More than 96% of toluene was efficiently removed by this coupled process, which was 2 times higher than that in the gas-phase VUV photolysis. This improvement was attributed to the synergistic effect between gas-phase and liquid-phase VUV photolysis. O3 and HO• are the predomination reactive species for the toluene degradation in this coupled process, and the generation of O3 in gas-phase VUV photolysis can efficiently enhance the HO• production in liquid-phase VUV photolysis. The result from in-situ proton transfer reaction ionization with mass analyzer (PTR-MS) further suggested that most intermediates were trapped by the wet scrubbing process and efficiently oxidized by the liquid-phase VUV photolysis, showing a high performance for controlling the secondary pollution. Furthermore, the result of stability test and the reuse of solution demonstrated that this coupled process has a highly stable and sustainable performance for toluene degradation. This study presents an environmentally benign and highly efficient VUV photolysis for gaseous VOCs removal in the wet scrubbing process.

Permanganate (Mn(VII)) is widely used as an oxidant in water treatment and usually reduced to nascent manganese dioxide (MnO2), which could promote Mn(VII) oxidation for the Mn(VII)-reactive compounds such as phenols and anilines. However, the removal of micropollutants containing diverse functional groups and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unexplored. This study reveals that Mn(VII)/nascent MnO2 was effective for the degradation of Mn(VII)-inert micropollutants, including sulfonamide antibiotics, ß-blockers and trimethoprim, with observed first-order rate constants (k'obs) of 0.126 ∼ 9 min-1 at pH 4.0. The synergetic effect of Mn(VII) and nascent MnO2 on the degradation of Mn(VII)-inert micropollutants decreased significantly when pH increased from 4.0 to 9.5. MnO2 played multiple roles in micropollutant degradation, which acted as a catalyst to promote the Mn(VII) oxidation of trimethoprim and propranolol, as well as an oxidant in propranolol degradation. Besides, Mn(III) oxidation accounted for 58% of the overall degradation of propranolol, but was not important for trimethoprim oxidation. Hydroxylated products were common products formed in Mn(VII)/MnO2. Differently, trimethoprim tended to form single-ring products via MnO2-catalyzed Mn(VII) oxidation, while propranolol preferentially formed dimers via in situ formed MnO2 oxidation. INTRODUCTION: Even though cadmium (Cd) exposure and cellular senescence (telomere length) have been linked in previous studies, composite molecular aging biomarkers are more significant and reliable factors to consider when examining the connection between metal exposure and health outcomes. The purpose of this research was to assess the association between urinary cadmium (U-Cd) and whole-body aging (phenotypic age). METHODS: Phenotypic age was calculated from chronological age and 9 molecular biomarkers. Multivariate linear regression models, subgroup analysis, and smoothing curve fitting were used to explore the linear and nonlinear relationship between U-Cd and phenotypic age. Mediation analysis was performed to explore the mediating effect of U-Cd on the association between smoking and phenotypic age. RESULTS: This study included 10,083 participants with a mean chronological age and a mean phenotypic age of 42.24 years and 42.34 years, respectively. In the fully adjusted model, there was a positive relationship between U-Cd and phenotypic age [2.13 years per 1 ng/g U-Cd, (1.67, 2.58)]. This association differed by sex, age, and smoking subgroups (P for interaction < 0.05). U-Cd mediated a positive association between serum cotinine and phenotypic age, mediating a proportion of 23.2%. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that high levels of Cd exposure are associated with whole-body aging.
