RESUMEN

One set of chronic gastrointestinal disorders called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is defined by persistent, non-specific inflammation. Abdominal pain, hematochezia, diarrhea, and other symptoms are among its clinical signs. Currently, managing and treating IBD remains a significant challenge. Patients with IBD frequently have deficits in trace elements. Selenium (Se) is one of the necessary trace elements for normal organismal function. It has several regulatory effects, including anti-oxidation, anti-inflammatory, and defensive properties, via inducing the synthesis of selenoproteins. Patients with IBD have been shown to have lower Se levels in epidemiologic research studies. Several experimental models of IBD suggest that Se or selenoproteins play a key role in microinflammation. We discuss the relationship between Se and IBD in this review, with an emphasis on a summary of potential mechanisms of action and applications of Se in IBD.

RESUMEN

Objective: To assess the clinical effectiveness of scalp acupuncture and computer assisted cognitive rehabilitation in the treatment of cognitive impairment in stroke patients. Methods: The literatures published before August 2021 in the following databases were included: PubMed, Chinese Biomedical Database, Wanfang Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Database of Chinese sci-tech periodicals (VIP), EBSCO Information Services, MEDLINE and Web of Science. Only randomised controlled trials (RCTs) were included. Primary outcomes were the Loewenstein Occupational Therapy Cognitive Assessment (LOTCA) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Our secondary outcome was Modified Barthel Index Score (MBI). The quality of all included trials was evaluated according to the Cochrane Collaboration. This protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42016048528). Results: Sixteen articles were selected including 1333 patients. The result of the meta analysis showed that the combination of scalp acupuncture and computer assisted cognitive rehabilitation had a significant improvement in the cognitive impairments. The analysis of LOTCA showed the improvement on the LOTCA (p < 0.0001, n = 410, I2 = 86%, mean difference 8.31). The meta-analysis of the MOCA showed a weighted mean difference of 3.76 and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of 2.90-4.62 (p < 0.0001, n = 301). Besides, it was showed that the combination therapy played an important role in the improvement of the score of MBI with a weighted mean difference of 9.30 and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of 5.87-12.672 (p < 0.0001, n = 278). Conclusions: Scalp acupuncture and computer assisted cognitive rehabilitation appears to be effective for stroke patients with respect to certain outcomes. However, the evidence thus far is inconclusive. Further high-quality RCTs following standardized guidelines with a low risk of bias are needed to confirm the effectiveness of acupuncture for postpartum depression.

RESUMEN

AIMS: Retrospective clinical studies have shown that opioids could potentially affect the risk of cancer recurrence and metastasis. Better understanding of the effects of opioids on cancer will help to select the optimal anesthetic regimens to achieve better outcomes in cancer patients. BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence has shown the direct effects of opioids on bulk cancer cells and cancer stem cells. Opioid such as nalbuphine is approved to control cancer-associated pain but little is known on their possible cancer effects. OBJECTIVE: To assess the biological effects of nalbuphine on acute myeloid leukemia (AML) differentiated and stem/progenitor CD34+ cells. METHODS: AML CD34+ cells were isolated with colony formation, growth and apoptosis assays performed. Biochemical and immunoblotting analyses were conducted in AML cells exposed to nalbuphine. RESULTS: Nalbuphine at clinically relevant concentrations was active against a panel of AML cell lines with varying IC50. Importantly, nalbuphine augmented the efficacy of cytarabine and daunorubicin in decreasing AML cell viability/ growth. Besides bulk AML cells, we noted that nalbuphine was effective and selective in decreasing viability and colony formation of AML CD34+ cells while sparing normal hematopoietic CD34+ cells. The action of nalbuphine on AML cells is not associated with opioid receptors but via inhibiting Ras/Raf/MEK/ERK signaling pathway. Overexpression of constitutively active Ras partially but significantly reversed the inhibitory effects of nalbuphine on AML cells. CONCLUSION: Our findings reveal the selective anti-AML activity of nalbuphine and its ability in inhibiting Ras signaling. Our work suggests that nalbuphine may be beneficial for leukemia patients.

RESUMEN

To comprehensively investigate the effect of different air humidity conditions on the performance and odor emission in composting technology, a full-scale experiment was conducted simultaneously in the regions with low air relative humidity (Kunming) and high relative air humidity (Xishuangbanna), Yunnan province. The results showed that: In the regions with low relative air humidity, similar performances were found on organic matter degradation and germination index values in windrow and trough composting. Windrow composting got lower H2S emission, but higher NH3 release comparing with trough composting. Windrow composting was more susceptible to high relative air humidity. The degradation rate and germination index were 22% and 28% lower than those in trough composting. Therefore, the trough composting was recommended in the areas with high relative air humidity, while suitable NH3 mitigation measure should be considered.
