RESUMEN

We performed an audit of the treatment of genital warts at our clinic by reviewing the case notes of 302 patients who presented with a first episode of genital warts. 186 were suitable for inclusion, of whom over 90% were clear of warts within three months. However, even after just one month of treatment, 84.9% of men and 60.2% of women were clear of warts. On the basis of this information, we can be more optimistic when advising patients about the likely duration of treatment.

RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to investigate the validity of utilizing treadmills in human gait studies--to investigate the correlation between heel strike data obtained while walking on a treadmill to that obtained while walking on carpet and vinyl tile. The impact data were recorded using accelerometers located in the heels of tennis and casual buck shoes. Seven male subjects were tested while walking at a normal pace on the carpeted and tiled floors and then on the treadmill at that pace. Additional gait velocities were also tested on the treadmill to study the effect of velocity on heel impact. A correlation was found between heel strike accelerations on the treadmill and the ones on the tile for both shoe types. No correlation was found for the carpet. Heel strike peak accelerations increased linearly with increasing velocity on the treadmill. Results indicate that a motorized treadmill can be utilized in gait studies as long as several factors are kept in mind: the material characteristics of the shoe, the subject's stride length, the hardness of heel impact of the subject, the subject's own walking speed, and whether the subject uses a treadmill regularly.

RESUMEN

In essence, the nine step model is a macro-description of the content of the program's structure and provides a brief description of the process. What it does not provide is a methodology for conducting the data-gathering and evaluation process (#6 and #7). Here is where the creativity of the QA coordinator is put to test. This methodology has not been formally prescribed by the Joint Commission, as QA is a rather new science which entails defining the concept in addition to determining consistent methodologies. We are thus left to explore other established disciplines, such as research and evaluation methodologies of education, for example, for the procedures and instrumentation to be employed in the data-gathering and analysis process. The application of the nine-step model is a helpful means of conceptualizing how each department's program should appear, including what to monitor, how to conduct the activity, who is to participate, and the frequency of activities. Hospitals are bastions of procedure manuals for everything from surgical draping to foley cath insertion. The establishment of a procedure manual for QA that is consistent with this model, however, is a necessary and effective means of taking a facility one step closer to compliance with established requirements.
