RESUMEN

The presence of cocaine, morphine and methadone in sweat samples obtained after stimulation of the eccrine sweat glands, from drugs users after six drugs-free days, was investigated. The stimulation of the sweat elimination was proved using pilocarpine-iontophoresis every hour for 7 hours. The drugs concentrations were determined by radioimmunoassay. Consequently, the values measured represent the sum of the drug and its metabolites. Measurable levels of cocaine, morphine and methadone were obtained after the third stimulation of the glands.

RESUMEN

Age-related changes in the gut were investigated in male gnotobiotic rats, living in a controlled and constant environment until death. Parameters of the regenerative compartment of the jejunum and ileum were the cell production rate (measured by a stathmokinetic technique), the number of crypts, and the crypt:villus ratio. Parameters of the functional compartment were the average surface area of the villi, height and broadness of villi, etc. Age did not change the size of individual villi or crypts or the cell production rate. The number of crypts and, to the same extent, the number of villi increased with age, indicating a continuation of mucosal growth up to an age of 2 yr.

RESUMEN

LP-X was investigated in the serum of 221 patients with and without cholestasis. The diagnostic sensitivity and the diagnostic specificity of the test were 0.9 and 0.88, respectively. When this test is used on a non-selected collective, however, the predictive value of the positive test is very low, whereas negative results have a high diagnostic value. Thus, in practice, LP-X is more suitable for the exclusion, rather than the detection of cholestasis.

RESUMEN

Parameters of collagen metabolism were investigated in guinea pigs, both untreated and treated with glucocorticoids. One series consisted of animals housed under normal conditions, the others of SPF animals from the same strain. There are marked differences in certain parameters, including the hydroxyproline content and the reaction of the collagen to glucocorticoids.

RESUMEN

In a workshop conference of the German Society for Clinical Chemistry, clinical chemical parameters, which are important in preventive medicine, were discussed for three common diseases, diabetes mellitus, gout and chronic liver diseases. In addition the analytical and diagnostic reliability was evaluated for each of these parameters.

RESUMEN

Specific pathogen free guinea pigs were treated with varying dosis of fluocortolone for 15 days. The treated animals showed the same per cent weight gain as the controls. The total hydroxyproline content of the skin and the hydroxyproline content in different collagen fractions was the same in treated and untreated animals. Thus fluocortolone seems to have no specific effect on the synthesis or the breakdown of collagen in the guinea pig skin. Also the physical development of the animals, kept under defined conditions, failed to show a catabolic effect of of fluorcortolone.

RESUMEN

Fourteen non-diabetic male patients undergoing partial gastrectomy for ulcer disease were investigated with oral glucose tolerance test using a 100 g mixture of oligosaccharides. Partial gastrectomy had been performed between 1 and 3 years ago. Compared to seven healthy male control subjects, patients had significant higher blood glucose levels at 30 and 60 min and a more rapid descent, so that at 120 and 180 min no differences were found between patients and control subjects. With the usual criteria (blood glucose levels at 120 and 180 min) the non-diabetic patients with partial gastrectomy showed normal test results.
