RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to describe the emerging pattern of disability (activity limitation) in terms of its prevalence, age and gender distribution in Rwanda. METHOD: A door-to-door survey was conducted in all households in villages from two districts selected through a multi-stage sampling procedure. Identified persons were screened for activity limitations using age-appropriate instruments developed from domains in the ICF. Proportions were computed and disaggregated by age group, gender, district and activity limitation. A multi-disciplinary rehabilitation team including community members participated in the development of instruments, community mobilisation, data collection and collation. RESULTS: Prevalence rates of 8.6% (Bugesera) and 14.7% (Musanze) were obtained. The prevalence of disability was higher in adults than in children in both districts (10.4% versus 6.6% in Bugesera and 19.6% versus 7.7% in Musanze). Visual limitations occurred the most frequently in both adults and children in both districts. Mobility and mental health limitations also notably contributed to the overall disability burden. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of disability obtained was higher than all previously reported data for Rwanda. Despite the limitations, the findings provide useful information for planning rehabilitation services and to direct future enquiry into the epidemiology of disability in Rwanda. Implications for Rehabilitation It is important to design specific surveys to measure disability using contemporary methods to gauge the situation accurately and qualitatively. Currently, the ICF provides the best framework to describe the epidemiology of disability meaningfully; it enables comparisons within and between countries and regions of the world; and enables the active participation of a wide range of rehabilitation stakeholders including PWDs and lay community members. The vast majority of disabilities in Rwanda are limitations in visual, mobility and mental health functions.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore and describe the health education needs of educators at health promoting schools in Makapanstad in North West Province. METHODOLOGY: Qualitative, exploratory and descriptive paradigm was conducted. The population consisted of educators, at Makapanstad schools, who were directly involved with learners. The participants were purposively selected. Focus group interviews were conducted to collect relevant data from the participants. Tesch data analysis process was used to reach the findings of the research. FINDINGS: The following categories were identified and theoretically confirmed: The need for the support by the University for the training of educators; The need for the University's acknowledgement of educators' responsibilities; The need for basic knowledge of health promotion; Common health needs of learners; and indirect health problems. RECOMMENDATION: It was recommended that a health education package be developed to assist in empowering learners in Makapanstad schools.

RESUMEN

Two samples of sixth-grade students were followed over time to examine relations of number of reciprocated friendships, peer acceptance, and group membership to academic achievement. In both samples, group membership was the most consistent predictor of grades over time. In Study 2, prosocial behavior, antisocial behavior, and emotional distress were examined as processes that might explain these significant links between peer relationships and academic achievement. Results of longitudinal analyses support a conclusion that aspects of peer relationships are related to classroom achievement indirectly, by way of significant relations with prosocial behavior. Future research might benefit from more in-depth analyses of the functions of adolescent peer relationships and the processes by which they influence orientations toward social and academic competence at school.

RESUMEN

The purposes of this study were to examine academically relevant characteristics of different sociometric status groups and to learn about the academic orientations of behavioral subgroups of rejected children. Results from a sample of 423 sixth and seventh graders (ages 11-13) suggested that sociometrically neglected children have quite positive academic profiles. When compared with average status children, these students reported higher levels of motivation, were described by teachers as more self-regulated learners, as more prosocial and compliant, and as being better liked by teachers. Analyses of two behavioral subgroups of rejected children indicated that aggressive-rejected but not submissive-rejected children have problematic academic profiles. Relations of neglected and aggressive-rejected status to academic adjustment in young adolescents' lives is discussed.

RESUMEN

Relations between academic performance and 3 aspects of social competence--socially responsible behavior, sociometric status, and self-regulatory processes (goal setting, interpersonal trust, and problem-solving styles)--were studied. Based on a sample of 423 12- and 13-year-old students, correlational findings indicate that each aspect of social competence is related significantly to students' grades. Results from multiple regression analyses suggest that when accounting for students' IQ, sex, ethnicity, school absence, and family structure, socially responsible behavior mediates almost entirely the relations between students' grades and the other 2 aspects of social competence. Socially responsible behavior and peer status appear to be related by way of their joint association with goals to be socially responsible, interpersonal trust, and problem-solving styles. Similarly, relations between socially responsible behavior and the background variables are explained by joint relations with the self-regulatory processes. The social nature of learning and the role of self-regulation in both interpersonal and behavioral aspects of social competence are discussed.

RESUMEN

A study was conducted to determine an optimum technique for semen cryopreservation and the biological competence of frozen-thawed ferret spermatozoa. Fifty-two fresh electroejaculates from 4 males were evaluated for sperm percentage motility, forward progressive motility, motility index (SMI) and acrosomal integrity. To determine the optimum temperature for maintaining sperm motility in vitro and the influence of glycerol on sperm motility, seminal aliquants were diluted in TEST diluent (containing either 0 or 4% glycerol) and maintained at 25 degrees or 37 degrees C. For cryopreservation, semen was diluted in each of 3 cryodiluents (TEST, PDV, BF5F), cooled for 30 min at 5 degrees C and pelleted on solid CO2 or frozen in 0.25 ml straws (20 degrees C/min to -100 degrees C). Following thawing, SMI and acrosomal integrity were determined. Ten females with maximum vulval swelling were given 90 i.u. human chorionic gonadotrophin and laparoscopically inseminated in utero with spermatozoa previously frozen using the optimum diluent and freeze-thaw method. The maintenance temperature of 25 degrees C was superior (P less than 0.05) to 37 degrees C for sustaining sperm motility, and glycerol did not influence (P greater than 0.05) motility for up to 11 h of culture. After thawing, motile spermatozoa were recovered in all treatment groups, but sperm motility and normal acrosomal ratings were highest using the PDV diluent, the pelleting method and thawing at 37 degrees C (P less than 0.05). Seven of the 10 ferrets (70%) inseminated with spermatozoa frozen by this approach became pregnant and produced 31 kits (mean litter size 4.4; range 1-9 kits).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

RESUMEN

This study compared the depressive symptoms of 36 ICU nurses to 23 non-ICU nurses. The study was conducted in a pediatric setting where critically ill children may present unique demands. The ICU nursing staff had a significantly higher frequency (28%) of symptoms consistent with a depressive disorder than either the age group norm (12%) or the non-ICU nurses (13%). This finding suggests a continued need for investigation into the stresses associated with the delivery of critical care.

RESUMEN

On the basis of x-ray morphometric examinations employing 2,500 x-ray photographs age- and sex-specific standard value curves of the bone mineral content are ascertained for the methods by Singh, Saville and Barnett/Nordin. Evaluations leads to the refusal of the wide clinical application of these methods. The combined application of these methods with microradioscopy employed in the forefield diagnostics of demineralizing skeleton diseases is possible only with proviso.

RESUMEN

From 1977 to 1982 40 patients suffering from severe bilateral gonarthrosis, mostly caused by rheumatoid arthritis, underwent the implantation of 42 Guepar-endoprostheses of their knee joint. It was only in 1 case that a prosthesis got loose by infection and had to be removed without replacement. In 2 other cases of aseptic loosening a reimplantation of the prosthesis could be performed successfully. The authors emphasize the encouraging results.

RESUMEN

The increasing use, in recent years, of surgical methods for the treatment of labial carcinomata caused us to review the results of treatment by means of irradiation. The different methods of radiotherapy are described, and a comparison is made between the results of radiotherapy and surgical treatment. Also, cases are described in which it is indicated to use either surgical treatment or radiotherapy or a combination of the two methods.
