RESUMEN

A simple test for collagenase activity was performed on colonic mucosa specimens of 35 patients with inflammatory bowel disease, 7 patients with carcinoma of the colon, 3 with benign polyps, and 34 normal subjects. Increased collagenase activity was present in 94.2% of the specimens taken from the inflamed mucosa and 71.4% of those obtained from colonic carcinoma, as compared to 8.8% of the control group.

RESUMEN

Recurrent acute otitis media (RAOM) is a distressing clinical manifestation of middle ear pathology, mainly expressed in the first two years of life. In this controlled study, prophylactic treatment by phenoxymethyl penicillin reduced significantly the frequency of RAOM in 60 children, as compared to 48 children who received a short ampicillin course only on the occasion of an acute otitis media episode. The importance of breastfeeding, age at initial episode, the type of treatment given and the pertinent literature is discussed. A working hypothesis of this prophylactic treatment is suggested.

RESUMEN

Collagenase enzyme activity of 38 Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains and 38 strains of Escherichia coli from various pathological sources was measured by a simple method. This method uses plates with collagen gel. The rate of gel lysis is proportional to the collagenase concentration. The method is simple and requires no special materials or equipment. From the 38 P. aeruginosa strains, 34 were collagenase positive. All 38 strains of E. coli were collagenase negative.

RESUMEN

Cervical actinomycosis is a rare condition. During the last six years, five patients were hospitalized in our department, suffering from swelling in the region of the face and neck that was identified bacteriologically as Actinomyces israelii. Soft tumors of the head and neck that do not respond to common antibiotic therapy should arouse the suspicion of actinomycosis.
