RESUMEN
The present study investigated the influence of oral health on horses' facial expression, reactivity of the acupuncture points and the perception of trainers and owners. We investigated 87 adult horses involved in sports or working activities. Pain was scored in person and by photography by an evaluator "blinded" to the animals' dental condition, using the Horse Grimace Scale (HGS). The acupuncture examination was performed by the same evaluator. Animals were evaluated before (T0) and 15 days (T1) after dental treatment. All horses included in the study had dental disorders. Statistically significant results were seen in median HGS scoring (3 vs. 1, p = 0.001) and number of reactive acupoints (11.2±5.6 vs. 4±2.9, p = 0.001). Additionally, complaints by the trainers/owners were lower at T1 compared with T0. There was a reduction in the pain reaction to application of pressure on following acupoints: dental point (44 vs. 4), Stomach-7 (31 vs. 3), Tiple-Heater (TH)-17 (27 vs. 4), and TH-16 (22 vs. 4). We concluded that acupuncture can be an adjunct method for diagnosis of dental disorders and treatment follow-up.

This study evaluated the effect of oregano essential oil added to the feed of commercial laying hens. This research was focused on the analysis of biochemical changes linked to hepatic function, and protein and lipid metabolism. It was used 240 laying hens (59 weeks-old) distributed in a completely randomized design of six treatments (five repetitions with eight birds each). The experiments were constituted by a control treatment (CT) with the inclusion of zinc bacitracin and five treatments of oregano essential oil (OEO: 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 mg.kg-1), respectively. After 28 days of feeding, an increase on serum levels of total proteins and globulins was observed on groups T150 and T200, as well as an increase on albumin levels on group CT. After 84 days of feeding, a significant reduction on total proteins and albumin was observed on group T200, as well as an increase in serum triglycerides. OEO at 200 mg.kg-1 increased globulin levels on day 28, which may be considered an effect in the inflammatory response, which increases serum immunoglobulins and proteins.

The aim of this study was to evaluate whether a phytogenic feed additive (PFA) based on essential oils such as carvacrol, thymol and cinnamic aldehyde, could be considered a replacement for antimicrobials used as growth promoters in broiler chickens, as well as to investigate its effect on total bacterial count, biochemical profiles, meat quality and meat fatty acid profile. A total of 240 broiler chicks were randomly distributed into 4 groups with 4 replicates of 15 animals each, as follow: T1 (basal diet only; the control group), T2 (basal diet supplemented with zinc bacitracin), T3 (basal diet with 0.5% of the PFA), T4 (basal diet with 1.0% of the PFA). The addition of 0.5% of the PFA improved live body weight of supplemented birds compared to the control group at 35 and 42 days of age, while the total bacterial count in the environment was reduced when 1.0% of the PFA was used. In addition, intestinal villi height and crypt depth suffered variations during the entire experiment in birds treated with both concentrations of the PFA and zinc bacitracin. Total erythrocyte counts were higher on days 14, 28 and 42 in both treated groups (PFA) compared to the control group, as well as hemoglobin content on days 28 and 42. On the other hand, leukocyte counts were lower on days 14, 28 and 42 due to reduced lymphocyte counts in both PFA treated groups compared to the control group. Serum levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) were lower in broilers fed with either concentration of PFA on day 14 of life, and the same was observed regarding aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in broiler treated with 0.5% of the PFA. Also, total protein and globulin levels were lower on days 14 and 28 in groups fed with phytogenic compared to the control group. Regarding meat quality, breast meat showed higher red intensity and shear force in groups fed with both concentrations of phytogenic compared to the control group, while weight loss by cooking was lower. Finally, 1.0% of phytogenic showed lower docosadienoic acid (C22:2) content in breast meat. In conclusion, results showed that the use of PFAs based on carvacrol and thymol may be considered an interesting alternative to increase broilers performance, replacing the use of antimicrobials as growth promoters, as well as an interesting alternative to reduce the total bacterial count in the environment of broiler chickens. Moreover, the diet containing phytogenic also showed hepaprotective effects but deserves attention regarding possible alterations on the immune response.

BACKGROUND: Human platelet antigens (HPAs) are alloantigens derived from polymorphisms in platelet-surface glycoproteins. The occurrence of alloantibodies against HPAs can lead to platelet destruction and subsequent thrombocytopenia. Brazilians have a high rate of racial admixture, and the knowledge of HPA polymorphisms in particular donors from north Brazil, who have a large Amerindian influence, is a relevant strategy to prevent alloimmunisation. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was investigate the HPA allele's frequencies in the Amazonas blood donors. METHODS: We performed HPA genotyping among 200 Amazonas blood donors by microarray for 11 HPA biallelic systems, including six of the most clinically significant systems (HPA-1 to -5 and -15) and five others (HPA-6 to -9 and -11) that have been also associated with alloimmunisation, amounting to 22 HPA alleles. RESULTS: The obtained allele frequencies were compared with data of 38 populations worldwide to determine the hierarchical relationship and estimated the probability of mismatch platelets. The allele frequencies were 0·862 for HPA-1a, 0·137 for HPA-1b, 0·852 for HPA-2a, 0·147 for HPA-2b, 0·665 for HPA-3a, 0·335 for HPA-3b, 0·995 for HPA-4a, 0·005 for HPA-4b, 0·892 for HPA-5a, 0·107 for HPA-5b, 0·997 for HPA-9a, 0·005 for HPA-9b, 0·502 for HPA-15a and 0·497 for HPA-15b. The incompatibility risks are higher for HPA-15 and HPA-3, followed by HPA-1, -2 and -5. CONCLUSION: We found differences among populations worldwide, and it is interesting to note the indigenous and European influences in this region, reinforcing the heterogeneity in the ancestry of Brazilians. The results will be helpful in providing information for platelet transfusion to avoid alloimmunisation.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the influence of flexibility and reciprocating movement on the fatigue life of endodontic instruments subjected to static and dynamic tests. METHODS: The rotary nickel-titanium instruments used in this study were Reciproc and Mtwo. The instruments were initially subjected to a cantilever-bending test and then to static and dynamic fatigue tests. Reciproc instruments were operated in reciprocating movement, whereas Mtwo instruments were worked in continuous rotation. RESULTS: The means of bending resistance (maximum load in grams) of the instruments were 274.9 for Reciproc and 429 for Mtwo. The mean times (in seconds) to fracture of the instruments subjected to static and dynamic tests were 214.5 (static) and 286.3 (dynamic) for Reciproc and 38.9 (static) and 99 (dynamic) for Mtwo. The Student's t test revealed significant differences in all tests (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study showed longer fatigue life for instruments with higher flexibility, driven by reciprocating movement, and in the dynamic testing model. These findings reinforce the assumption that use of reciprocating movement is a means to prolong the fatigue life of rotary nickel-titanium endodontic instruments during instrumentation of curved canals.

INTRODUCTION: This study compared the mechanical properties of endodontic instruments made of conventional nickel-titanium (NiTi) wire (K(3) and Revo-S SU), M-Wire (ProFile Vortex), or NiTi alloy in R-phase (K(3)XF). METHODS: The test instruments were subjected to mechanical tests to evaluate resistance to bending (flexibility), cyclic fatigue, and torsional load in clockwise rotation. Data were statistically evaluated by the analysis of variance test and the Student-Newman-Keuls test for multiple comparisons. RESULTS: In the bending resistance test, flexibility decreased in the following order: K(3)XF > Revo-S SU > ProFile Vortex > K(3). The ranking in the fatigue resistance test was the following: K(3)XF > K(3) > ProFile Vortex > Revo-S SU. In the torsional assay, the angular deflection at failure decreased in the following order: K(3)XF > Revo-S SU > K(3) > ProFile Vortex. For the maximum torque values, the ranking was K(3) > K(3)XF > ProFile Vortex > Revo-S SU. CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that the K(3)XF instrument, which is made of NiTi alloy in R-phase, had the overall best performance in terms of flexibility, angular deflection at failure, and cyclic fatigue resistance. In addition to the alloy from which the instrument is manufactured, the design and dimensions are important determinants of the mechanical performance of endodontic instruments.

INTRODUCTION: This study compared the mechanical properties of 3 pathfinding endodontic instruments. METHODS: The test instruments were subjected to mechanical tests to evaluate resistance to bending (flexibility), buckling, cyclic fatigue, and torsional load in clockwise rotation. Data were statistically evaluated by analysis of variance and the Student-Newman-Keuls test for multiple comparisons. RESULTS: In the buckling resistance test, the highest values were observed for C-Pilot files (VDW, Munich, Germany) and the lowest for Scout RaCe (FKG Dentaire, La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland) instruments. In the bending resistance test, the lowest flexibility was observed for the C-Pilot instrument, and no significant difference was observed between Scout RaCe and PathFile (Maillefer/Dentsply, Ballaigues, Switzerland) instruments. The ranking in the fatigue resistance test was the following: PathFile > Scout RaCe > C-Pilot, with statistically significant differences observed in the number of cycles to fracture between all the instruments. In the torsional assay, the angular deflection to fracture decreased in the following order: Scout RaCe > PathFile > C-Pilot. As for the maximum torque values, the ranking was as follows: C-Pilot > PathFile > Scout RaCe. CONCLUSIONS: Findings revealed that the stainless-steel C-Pilot instrument showed increased resistance to buckling but decreased flexibility and cyclic fatigue resistance when compared with nickel-titanium pathfinding instruments. PathFile instruments showed the highest resistance to cyclic fatigue, and Scout RaCe files exhibited the highest angular deflection to fracture. The different mechanical behavior of the instruments indicates that the combined use of stainless steel hand instruments and rotary nickel-titanium instruments during the exploration of narrow curved canals may be necessary to exploit the best performance of each pathfinding instrument.

INTRODUCTION: This study compared the buckling resistance of the following endodontic pathfinding instruments: C-Pilot file (VDW, Munich, Germany), C+ file (Maillefer/Dentsply, Ballaigues, Switzerland), and PathFile (Maillefer/Dentsply). METHODS: The test instruments were subjected to a devised buckling resistance test, which consisted of the application of an increasing load in the axial direction of the instrument by using a universal testing machine. The maximum load required to generate a lateral elastic displacement of 1 mm was recorded for each instrument. RESULTS: The results indicated that the buckling resistance decreased in the following order: C+ file > C-Pilot file > PathFile. The difference was statistically significant (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: The stainless steel instruments (C+ and C-Pilot) were more resistant to buckling than the nickel-titanium instrument (PathFile). Considering that buckling resistance may influence the performance of instruments during the negotiation of constricted canals, the C+ files showed significantly better results than the other instruments tested.

INTRODUCTION: This article describes a case of recurrent post-treatment apical periodontitis and late failure after endodontic retreatment performed in a single visit. METHODS: The patient presented with a tooth exhibiting inadequate endodontic treatment and a large periradicular lesion that extended laterally to the root. Retreatment was performed in a single visit and involved chemomechanical preparation using 5.25% NaOCl as the irrigant and root canal obturation by Schilder's vertical compaction technique. A large lateral canal was radiographically revealed after obturation. After 2 years, the lesion was no longer radiographically discernible, a condition that was confirmed 9 years after retreatment procedures. Nonetheless, after 12 years, radiographs revealed recurrent disease. Apical surgery was performed, and the root apex, including the area of the large lateral canal, was resected with care to maintain the lesion attached to it. The biopsy specimen was subjected to histopathologic and histobacteriologic analyses. RESULTS: Longitudinal sections of the apical root specimen revealed a heavy dentinal tubule infection surrounding the area of the lateral canal. Bacteria were not found in any other area of the specimen. No other possible reason for the inflammatory periradicular lesion, such as root fracture, coronal leakage, or foreign-body reaction, was evident. CONCLUSIONS: A persistent intraradicular infection caused by bacteria located within dentinal tubules is the most reasonable explanation for resurgence of the apical periodontitis lesion. This case report stresses the importance of attaining proper disinfection of the root canal system for a predictable long-term outcome of the treatment.

PURPOSE: To assess the prognostic value of the Ocular Trauma Score (OTS) in patients with eye injury treated in a University Hospital in South America. METHODS: One hundred and ninety subjects who were victims of eye trauma with different degrees of severity were evaluated and treated accordingly. Initial OTS categories were calculated for each patient and compared to the final visual result by transforming the achieved best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) after treatment into OTS values. RESULTS: OTS visual acuity showed good correlation with the final BCVA after treatment [Spearman's ρ = 0.857, 95 % confidence interval (CI) 0.813-0.891, P < 0.0001). No difference between the predicted BCVA and achieved BCVA was noticed (P < 0.0001, Chi-square test). CONCLUSION: The OTS provided useful information on outcomes treatment after eye trauma and can be used as a prognostic model to predict vision survival in injured adult patients from a developing country.
RESUMEN
Virulence factors and antimicrobial resistance patterns of Escherichia coli isolates were evaluated. A total of 80 E. coli isolates were evaluated, being 64 from clinical samples (intestinal content and fragments of organs from diarrheic piglets), seven from feces of clinically healthy piglets and sows, and nine environmental samples (five from facilities, two from feed, one from insect, and one from waste). Molecular characterization was performed by PCR detection of fimbriae and toxin genes and plasmid content determination. The isolates were also characterized according to their resistance or sensitivity to the following drugs: ampicillin, trimethoprim:sulfamethoxazole, tetracycline, amikacine, colistin, norfloxacin, florfenicol, enrofloxacin, cefalexin, trimethoprim, neomycin, chloramphenicol, and gentamicin. From 80 E. coli isolates, 53.8 percent were classified as enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), 2.5 percent were shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), and 43.8 percent showed a non specific pattern and were unclassified. One fecal isolate from non-diarrheic piglet was classified as ETEC by PCR. Clinical isolates showed resistance mainly for tetracycline and trimethoprim:sulfamethoxazole. Plasmidial DNA was observed in 70 isolates, being 78.5 percent of clinical isolates, 8.57 percent of non-diarrheic feces, and 12.8 percent of environment.

ABSTRACT Modern porcine-raising practice has provided positive results in pork production, however this practice predisposes the animals to a large number of diseases. The occurrence of infectious diseases has stimulated pork producers to engage in the indiscriminate use of antimicrobial drugs. Escherichia coli is one of the most important pathogens in swine production systems and has been characterized by multi-resistance to antimicrobial drugs. The ability of this bacteria in the horizontal spread of antibiotic resistance is associated to several genetic mechanisms and has many public health implications. Among the problems associated to the spread of multi-resistance are the contamination of humans and animals by pathogenic bacteria of difficult therapeutic control, mainly by contamination of their food and environment. This review aims to discuss important aspects related to the pathogenic potential of E. coli in swine and its resistance to antimicrobial drugs. In addition, it presents some alternatives to the use of antimicrobial drugs in swine production.
The larynx is the third most commonly involved organ in paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM). While a few studies have evaluated laryngeal sequelae, there have not been any investigations of voice abnormalities in PCM patients. To evaluate persistent dysphonia and laryngeal lesions, we studied 15 normal subjects and 30 post-treatment PCM patients, i.e., 15 with only pulmonary and 15 with both laryngeal and pulmonary involvement. Perceptual and acoustic voice analysis were performed with all patients, while endoscopic studies were also conducted with the 15 laryngeal patients. Voice analysis showed instability by perceptual analysis (P<0.01) in both groups, but more severe dysphonia was noted in the laryngeal group (P<0.01). The dysponia, seen in 66.7% of these patients (dysphonia index < 7.0), was characterized by roughness and breathness. The Dr. Speech (Tiger Electronics) analysis program did not accept five voices from the laryngeal group due to the severe dysphonia. Jitter was elevated in five laryngeal lesion patients. Endoscopy showed that 80% of patients with laryngeal lesion had two or more laryngeal structures involved. Vocal fold alterations were seen in all laryngeal lesion patients, which included involvement of the arythenoids, epiglottis, and vestibular folds. This first functional study of laryngeal sequelae in PCM revealed frequent and severe dysphonia that may have important social consequences for patients.

Stable transformants of Chromobacterium violaceum were obtained by high-voltage electroporation with a 7-kilobase binary plasmid. The technique was reliable, reproducible, and simple, with efficiencies of 10(5) transformants/microg of plasmid DNA. The electrical conditions that resulted in the highest efficiencies were short pulse length (4.4-4.5 ms) and high voltage (12.5 kV/cm). The numbers of transformants were almost the same during the growth exponential phase (variation at optical density) and resulted in the highest efficiencies at DNA concentration of 250 pg/ml. Saturation appeared to begin at 4 microg/ml of DNA. This method of C. violaceum transformation should enhance the genetic and biotechnological research by providing a valuable, widely used procedure of introducing DNA into this bacterium.

The annual incidence of Q fever in French Guiana was found to have increased in 1996 and was 37/100,000 population over the last 4 years. Subsequent investigations in Cayenne and its suburbs indicated that a wild reservoir of the bacteria was responsible for the epidemiologic pattern. A case-control study showed that residence near a forest and occupations and activities that result in exposure to aerosols of dusts from the soil are risk factors for Q fever. By means of time-series analysis, a strong positive correlation between rainfall and the incidence of Q fever with a time lag of 1-3 months was found. The spatial distribution of the cases showed that transmission occurs widely throughout greater Cayenne, which is incompatible with a pinpoint source of contamination. Transmission from livestock and dissemination of the bacteria by the wind appeared to be unlikely, which strengthens the hypothesis that a wild reservoir is responsible for transmission.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To determine the potentiation of the neuromuscular blockade induced by a titrated infusion of mivacurium in the presence of isoflurane versus a nitrous oxide (N2O)-opioid anesthesia. DESIGN: An open-label, controlled study. SETTING: The inpatient anesthesia service of two university medical centers. PATIENTS: Thirty adults divided into two groups. INTERVENTION: An intravenous infusion of mivacurium during anesthesia with N2O-opioid or N2O-isoflurane. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: A neuromuscular blockade was monitored by recording the electromyographic activity of the adductor pollicis muscle resulting from supramaximal stimulation at the ulnar nerve at 2 Hz for 2 seconds at 10-second intervals. The mivacurium infusion rate was significantly less in the presence of isoflurane [4.0 +/- 0.8 micrograms/kg/min (mean +/- SEM)] than during N2O-opioid anesthesia (6.4 +/- 0.6 micrograms/kg/min). The recovery rates did not differ between anesthetic groups. After the termination of the infusion, spontaneous recovery to T4/T1 of at least 0.75 occurred in an average of 17.9 +/- 1.5 minutes, with a mean recovery index (T25-75) of 6.0 +/- 0.7 minutes. CONCLUSION: Isoflurane anesthesia reduces the infusion rate of mivacurium required to produce about 95% depression of neuromuscular function.
