RESUMEN
We studied four eyes with retinal detachment accompanied by a break in the nonpigmented epithelium in the pars plicata of the ciliary body in three patients with atopic dermatitis. Each eye had either ectopia lentis or coloboma of the lens. In the region of the lens malformation, ciliary processes were hypoplastic. These rudimentary ciliary processes were observed only in the anterior half of the pars plicata. At their posterior end, the ciliary nonpigmented epithelium had been ruptured and a break by zonular traction was apparent. In the other region of the pars plicata, ciliary processes were normal and no break was detected. The break in the pars plicata was treated by diathermy application and segmental scleral buckling, without subretinal fluid drainage, and with the resulting reattachment of the retina. Hypoplasia of ciliary processes is basically responsible for the development of a break in the pars plicata.

The patient was a 60-year-old man with the chief complaints of bloody stools, and their abnormal motion. The diagnosis was sigmoid colon cancer. Esophageal cancer and cholelithiasis were also found by several preoperative examinations. Subtotal esophagectomy, cholecystectomy and sigmoidectomy were performed. Resected Specimen: There was an early cancer measuring 2.5 X 2.0 cm at the abdominal esophagus. It was a poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. There were two polyps at the gallbladder, in which carcinoma in situ was found. A well-differentiated papillotubular adenocarcinoma of type Borr 2 was found at the sigmoid colon.

As useful antibiotics for biliary tract infections, smooth transmigration to lesion and potent antibacterial activities will be demanded. Usually the antibiotics having potent antibacterial activities against E. coli and Klebsiella, which are considered to be main causative organisms of biliary tract infections, will be used for treatment. The concentrations of cefotiam (CTM) in bile and gallbladder wall tissue were investigated, and CTM showed very high concentrations in these tissues for several hours. And very good correlation between concentration of CTM in bile and laboratory findings, especially ICG R15 value, was obtained. CTM showed also very potent antibacterial activities against E. coli and Klebsiella. These results suggest that CTM will be useful agent for the treatment of biliary tract infections.

Amphotericin B (AmB)-5-fluorouracil (5-FU) combination therapy against cancer was evaluated when both were given orally. Seven gastric cancer patients were treated in this manner, and 4 gastric cancer patients treated with 5-FU alone to serve as the control. AmB syrup and 5-FU syrup were administered orally for 3 days before surgical operation. Then, the drugs were given through a gastric tube into the stomach 4 hr before the start of the gastric surgery. Lesion tissues and healthy tissues were collected from each patient and the 5-FU titers were measured by bioassay. It was shown in the majority of the gastric cancer cases that the 5-FU levels in the lesion tissues were substantially higher than those in the surrounding normal tissues, whereas in the gastric cancer patients who received 5-FU alone, most of the lesion tissues showed lower 5-FU content as compared with that of the surrounding tissues.

AmB/NCS combination therapy against cancer was evaluated. Six gastric cancer patients were treated in this manner, and 7 gastric cancer patients treated with NCS alone to serve as the control. AmB sirup was administered orally for 4 days before surgical operation. NCS was given intraveously at the onset of gastric surgery. Lesion tissues and healthy tissues were collected from each patient and the NCS titers were measured by bioassay. It was shown in the majority of the gastric cancer cases that the NCS levels in the lesion tissues were substantially higher than in the surrounding normal tissues, whereas in the gastric cancer patients who received NCS alone, no significant differences were found between the tissues.

AmB/NCS combination therapy against cancer was evaluated. Seven gastric cancer and 2 gastric polyp cases were treated in this manner and in addition 2 gastric cancer patients were treated with NCS alone, to serve as the control. AmB dissolved in glucose solution was administered intravenously as was NCS, which was given at the onset of gastric surgery. Lesion tissues and healthy tissues were collected from each patient and the NCS titers measured by bioassay. It was shown in the majority of the gastric cancer cases that the NCS levels in the lesion tissues were substantially higher than in the surrounding normal tissues, whereas in the gastric polyp and the gastric cancer patients who received NCS alone, no significant differences were found between the tissues.
